Fresh Fire

That ye be not slothful, but followers
of them who through faith and patience
inherit the promises.
Hebrews 6:12

I donโ€™t typically pull Bible verses from the King James version.  But in one of my devotionals this version of Hebrews 6:12 was the focus of that dayโ€™s study.  It got me thinking about my own faith and where I stand with โ€œslothfulness.โ€

When you hear that word โ€œslothโ€ you probably think of the lazy animal, hanging out in a tree accomplishing next to nothing all day.  Yet slothfulness is not the same as being lazy โ€“ which is how the word is translated in the New International Version.  In fact, the word โ€œslothfulโ€ in Greek is quite different.  And in the context of the verse in Hebrews it means to not allow our faith to become monotonous or without a blazing flame.

Slothful: nลthrรณs โ€“ slow, sluggish; monotonous

Strong’s Greek

For many Christians we say we are religious because we attend church regularly.  We get up Sunday morning, find our usual spot to park at church, listen to a sermon, sing a few familiar songs, and look forward to the donut or muffin on the way out.  We might chat with a few friends then head to whatever else we have on our plate for the day.  We can check off our โ€œfaithโ€ for that week. We might even go to a Bible study during the week to put another tick mark on our โ€œfaithfulโ€ list.

And for you overachieving, super involved Christians, itโ€™s interesting to note that the author of my devotional is an accomplished author, missionary and evangelist.  He realized he was a good โ€œworkerโ€ for God.  But somewhere along the line it became just that โ€“ work.

But what God wants of us is deep, passionate faith. And if you already have that โ€“ awesome!  I hope you will still enjoy what is to come in my Fresh Fire posts!

He wants us to be in love with Him.  He wants us to be eager to speak with Him and to be sad if we donโ€™t feel His presence.  He wants us to stand for Him in the face of those who would speak against Him.  He wants us to seek the opportunities to speak about His glorious promises.  He wants us to remove all spiritual neutrality and instead burn red-hot for His message of love, forgiveness, redemption and salvation!

My son-in-law once shared with me Charles Spurgeonโ€™s compilation of prayers called, โ€œSpurgeon on Prayer and Spiritual Warfare.โ€  I soon got my own copy and was amazed with the fervor level of his sermons.  Thereโ€™s nothing slothful about Mr. Spurgeon!  I wanted to share this excerpt about praying with a blazing heart:

โ€œI would that some of you prayed more vehemently! โ€œThe kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.โ€ (Matt 11:12) An old Puritan said, โ€œPrayer is a cannon set at the gate of heaven to burst open its gates.โ€ You must take the city by storm if you would have it. You will not ride to heaven on a feather-bed, you must go on pilgrimage; there is no going to the land of glory while you are sound asleep, dreamy sluggards will have to wake up in hell. If God has made you to feel in your soul the need of salvation, cry like one who is awake and alive; be in earnest; cry aloud; spare not.

Charles Spurgeon, The Raven’s Cry

Whew!  I get exhausted each time I read that!  And yet, during the โ€œGreat Covid Pandemicโ€ I watched friendsโ€™ faith fall by the wayside.  They were comfortable with sitting in their PJs watching a church video and nothing more.   I also watched others be lifted to higher heights.  Their Bible study life became daily and hour-long.  Their prayers became constant and vibrant!  Their work of sanctification grew by leaps and bounds!  I have written before that I believe a great sifting has occurred.  Those who choose to be โ€œslothfulโ€ in their faith will continue to slide out of a relationship with Jesus.  But we donโ€™t want to be lost into the world.

For five weeks, Iโ€™ll share 25 verses about strong, energetic, and passionate faith.  A few may feel familiar but my hope is that most will be something new.   Because thatโ€™s what this series is about โ€“ stripping away the โ€œusualโ€ and monotonous and injecting a bit of new fire.

Godโ€™s promises are so much more beautiful and glorious than anything the world can ever offer.  Itโ€™s up to us to grab hold of our faith with renewed vigor and fire.  Itโ€™s up to us to burn in passion for our Lord.

Hereโ€™s the prayer from that dayโ€™s devotional about slothfulness.  I hope you pray it as a stepping off point for the study!

โ€œLord, help me understand how totally unacceptable it is for me to lose my passion, momentum and desire.  I ask you to forgive me for allowing any hint of slothfulness to operate in my life.  Today I repent and deliberately turn from slothfulness.  Holy Spirit,  I turn to you now and ask you to stir and reignite the fire in my heart.  Please help me regain the zeal, the thrust and the fire I once possessed.  Help me to keep that fire burning this time, never to lose it again.  I pray this is Jesusโ€™ name!โ€

Work It for God

Therefore, I urge you, brothers
and sisters, in view of Godโ€™s mercy,
to offer your bodies as a living
sacrifice, holy and pleasing to
Godโ€”this is your true and
proper worship.
Romans 12:1

A prayer to keep my body strong and dedicate it to serve God

Heavenly Father, I regularly make the commitment to keep my spiritual life active and strong.  However, when I make choices about exercise or my diet, I rarely see that as part of my devotional life.  My spirit, my soul and my body all belong to you.   You ask us to be your warriors in the name of Christ.  And warriors are strong spiritually, mentally and physically.  Starting today, LORD, I recommit my entire body to you.  When I am weak and want to forgo exercise or eat food I know just isnโ€™t good for me I ask that your Holy Spirit remind me that I need to be strong to accomplish all that you have planned for me.  I lift this up in your Sonโ€™s Holy Name, Amen.

I heard a pastor speaking the other day about our bodies being a โ€œliving sacrificeโ€ and how so many of us Christians focus solely on the spirit part of our being.  But there are three key parts that make us, well us.  Our spirit, our soul (emotions and mind), and our physical body.  And when one is out of balance then we havenโ€™t fully committed ourselves as a living sacrifice.  We may be saved but some of us are downright miserable either because of what goes on in our heart and head or because we just donโ€™t feel good about our bodies.

We make that New Yearโ€™s resolution to lose that famous 10 pounds.  Which in reality is probably more like 15 or 20.  But resolutions are only so good as our own personal commitment to ourselves. Recognizing that our bodies belong to God and He has a divine purpose for them is key to taking control over our physical health.

Thereโ€™s a funny movie featuring Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep called, โ€œDeath Becomes Her.โ€  In it the two women take an immortality potion.  The two women have despised each other their entire lives and spend much of the movie trying to outdo each other.  But prior to taking the potion they are warned to take care of their bodies.  Once broken, their body remains damaged โ€“ but they continue to live forever.  The famous scene in the movie is called the โ€œshovel scene.โ€  The two women get into a fight and begin bashing each other with all manner of devices including shovels.  The destruction they cause to their bodies is hilarious.  And they will be stuck that way for all eternity.

Oops, you gotta little hole right there…

When we look into our mirrors, we should heed the same warning.  This is the only body we have and we should take good care of it, not just for ourselves, but in Godโ€™s name and purpose.  If we are not in our best fighting shape (no matter our God-given physical situation) then how can we expect God to give us every opportunity possible to serve Him?

My current Bible study group (My BSGs โ€“ Bible Study Girls) is made up of two women I met at the gym and another with whom I walk regularly.   Now, lest you think the two from the gym were longtime friends I want to clarify.  I started working out at this particular gym because my daughter was a physical therapist there.  It was a different type of workout than Iโ€™d ever done.  Their small classes are crossfit style, in addition to weight training.  Thereโ€™s not a lot of time to sit around and chit chat.

She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
Proverbs 31:17

I found that some people have the unique ability to actually talk to others while dying, I mean working out, on the rowing machine.  It was during these times I discovered some of the Christians in the group.  They were open with their faith journeys.  So, when my walking buddy urged me to start a new Bible study, I prayed about who to invite.  God urged me to ask some of the ladies I sort of knew from the gym.  Two of them immediately said, โ€œyes.โ€

Had I not stepped out of my comfort zone and joined the crossfit craze, had I not made a commitment to working out every weekday at 6:30a.m., I wouldnโ€™t have met these amazing women.  God used me and my body to serve His kingdom.

Iโ€™m currently working on losing a few pounds I gained during the lockdowns.  But I have a renewed commitment, not to me, but to God.  I want to be in the best physical shape I can be so that He opens more doors and places me where I can do His work.  I know with this new understanding of my body being a living sacrifice and the help of His Holy Spirit I will be in fighting shape soon.

If you want this too, add the prayer to your daily prayer list and watch and see how God works in your life!

Living Amazed

From the first day of Earth to today, God has been doing amazing things in our lives. And when Jesus preached and performed miracles, the Bible frequently says the people were amazed. Each day we get up to start a new day. Each day we put our feet on the floor, have breakfast, brush our teeth, and then go about our daily routine. We do the laundry, wash the dishes, log in another long day at work. It’s so easy to live in the humdrum of every day. But God is still doing amazing things!

I’ve spent much of my adult life being a pessimist. As I grew closer to Jesus it became almost impossible to continue looking at life, people and circumstances constantly from a negative point of view. God transformed me. And that, my friends, is pretty darn amazing.

Join me and my special guest writer as we explore all the amazing acts of Jesus starting November 1 through 29. My hope is that each day we will help you take these amazing Jesus acts and translate them into your amazing life.

The Man With A Plan

I donโ€™t know if youโ€™re like me but when I go into any situation, Iโ€™m always asking, โ€œwhatโ€™s the plan?โ€ย ย Thereโ€™s that Martha popping up in me again!ย ย Iโ€™m an action-oriented, goal-centered, outcome-driven creature.ย ย Thatโ€™s not bad.ย ย Through numerous human resources training sessions Iโ€™ve come to realize the different characters in a well-oiled team.ย ย And, as a person comfortable with leading, Iโ€™ve needed to see all the beautiful ways people contribute toward accomplishing a goal.ย ย You have the worker bees, idea creators, empathizers, suspicious minds, change resistors, change lovers, and number crunchers.ย ย But there always needs to be a โ€œman with a plan.โ€ย ย Of course, not necessarily a man.ย ย But a person who has a vision โ€“ an overarching goal or purpose to why we all have gathered.ย ย Apple founder Steve Jobs was one such leader.ย ย On leadership he said,

โ€œTechnology is nothing.ย ย Whatโ€™s important is that you have faith in people, that theyโ€™re basically good and smart, and if you give them tools, theyโ€™ll do wonderful things with them.โ€

Steve Jobs

At the end of Mr. Jobsโ€™ life I donโ€™t know how he felt about God but he was channeling Godโ€™s leadership ideas.  God is the Man with the Ultimate Plan.  Praise God that He is our fearless leader.   In Romans 8:28, the disciple Paul writes: โ€œAnd we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.โ€  Notice God calls meetings and has a purpose in mind?  As believers we are working in concert with Godโ€™s purposes.  He pulls together teams to accomplish His visions for His world.  So, when we are called into the office, we bring our various talents and characteristics.

Itโ€™s a dangerous mistake for us to look at other Christians working for Godโ€™s purpose and compare ourselves to them.ย ย Yes, we can all learn from each other about how to better trust and obey God.ย ย But being a believer doesnโ€™t erase our basic tendencies or talents or abilities.ย ย At my most recent church I volunteered for the Come Build Hope team.ย ย This program facilitated building an average of 10 houses in Mexico each year.ย ย In the bulletin was posted the need for a registrar.ย ย That was right up my alley.ย ย Iโ€™m very organized, computer savvy, and communicate well with volunteers.ย ย The other two key members of the team were grateful because those arenโ€™t their talents.ย ย One was a building specialist.ย ย One was the vision and money person.ย ย We made a great team.ย ย Mostly because we were also God-centered.ย ย Our big and many small decisions were based on Jesusโ€™ teachings.ย ย He was always on our minds and hearts.ย ย Itโ€™s not that everything went smoothly, itโ€™s that we were able to work out all problems great and small as a team.ย ย ย

Iโ€™ve found when I place God as my team leader and look to Him for guidance, comfort, encouragement and peace my life seems to go in a much clearer direction.ย ย Itโ€™s when I try to wrestle back control that it jumps the tracks.ย ย I also know that when circumstances around me start to go awry I can look to Him to take me through the storm.ย ย There are many major companies that have failed to weather financial, political or other storms due to lack of good leadership.ย ย Trials and tests will come to everyone. When I put my faith firmly in the capable hands of God I know He will work all things for my good.

I love this new song by King & Country. I was fortunate to hear this song in concert before it was released. The idea of working together, for His purpose, is so important right now. As Christians we need to band together as God’s team to bring light and hope to our world. Click on the photo to watch the video of Together.

The Sweetest Name…..

I’m a doer. I consider Martha from Luke 10:41 my Bible spirit. My “Love Language” is definitely acts of service. I’m working on being Martha’s sister Mary — loving Jesus in pure love and adoration. We frequently compare ourselves to others we admire and usually find ourselves wanting. I told a sweet friend of mine the other day that I realize I surround myself with a lot of “Marys” — women who I consider a lot nicer and kinder than myself. She responded with, “You are such a compassionate person.” That’s because she’s so nice.

So here I am in the midst of something that doesn’t come naturally to me — singing words of praise and love for God. He always manages to put our flaws front and center, doesn’t He? I’ve come to just look up and laugh along. The Martha in me kicked into high gear with this “project” He set on my heart. I started researching what famous pastors have said about praise. I gathered songs that spoke to loving God. I’ve discovered poetry and art which praises the Lord. I’ve also started following other blogs. One such blog is by Carol Congalton. I really don’t know much about her except she is a Mary. She has a great gift for words in expressing her love and joy and wonder for God. She’s also very funny. She posted this beautiful little essay on God’s sweetness that I had to share with you. Enjoy!

Let Us Lead the Strain

Each morning I take my sweet dog Tucker out for a nice long walk.  We typically walk in the canyon near our house.  Some days I listen to worship music, some days I listen to podcasts.  While other days I make it a point to just listen.  Yesterday I decided to walk the first mile in praise and the second in prayers for others. Thanks to this 30 Days of Praise project that mile of praise has gotten easier.  I reflected on the last 12 days of posts and began reciting different phrases โ€“ โ€œGod you are my King!  God you are omnipotent!  God you are ever present in my life!  God, you love me even when I am being unlovable.  God, you have taught me so much.  You are the only one worthy of this praise. You are a flawless shield.โ€  My love pouring out to Him filled me with such joy and peace like a mirror reflects back the sunlight.  It felt bold and it felt oh so right.

I found this short essay on praising God which spurs me on toward my next 12 days.ย ย Encouraging me to praise; pressing me to dig deeper; showing me that praising God is simply what all nature does every minute of the day.ย

โ€œCome you children of God, and bless his dear name; for doesnโ€™t all nature around you sing?ย ย If you were silent, you would be an exception to the universe.ย ย Doesnโ€™t the thunder praise him as it rolls like drums in the march of the God of armies?ย ย Doesnโ€™t the ocean praise him as it claps its thousand hands?ย ย Doesnโ€™t the sea roar, and the fullness thereof?ย ย Do not the mountains praise him when the shaggy woods upon their summits wave in adoration?ย ย Do not the lightnings write his name in letters of fire upon the midnight darkness?ย ย Doesnโ€™t this world, in its unceasing revolutions, perpetually roll forth his praise?ย ย The whole earth has a voice, and shall we be silent?ย ย Shall man, for whom the world was made, and suns and stars were created โ€“ shall he be silent?ย ย No, let him lead the strain.โ€

How will you lead the strain in praising God today?ย ย Shout it as loud as the sea roars and as bold as the lightning claps! Join the conversation below!

Praise At The Ready

Day 12

You never know when you will have the opportunity to share your faith.ย ย God will place people in your lives that He wants you to share your love for Him.ย ย We must always be ready.ย  And although you are not responsible for the path they eventually take, God calls us to take even the smallest part in that path. When my youngest was in college she became best friends with a beautiful, smart, funny young lady from Belgium.ย ย They were field hockey teammates, roommates, and now lifelong friends.ย ย We sent my daughterโ€™s car out to her their sophomore year.ย ย It gave them so much freedom to explore the St. Louis area and beyond.ย ย

As my daughter grew closer to Christ through the Christian athlete organization Athletes In Action, she also began discipling other athletes.ย ย But her best friend didnโ€™t seem interested.ย ย However, one of the many things they did have in common was their love of music.ย ย I saw many a video of them driving along singing at the top of their lungs to a popular song while they cruised the streets of St. Charles, Missouri.ย ย Their favorite was โ€œAfricaโ€ by Toto which had experienced a renewal at that time. And while they played upbeat, fun, pop and country songs my daughter also played songs about her faith.ย ย Beautiful Christian songs.ย ย Songs that spoke of her love for Jesus.

One day her friend hopped in the car and said to her, โ€œPlay some of those good, sad songs.โ€ย ย My daughter was confused.ย ย Her Belgium friend, while fluent in English, had a funny way of using the English language with her French/Dutch accent.ย ย She said, โ€œYou know, those Jesus songs.โ€ย ย And my daughter was ready to serve in Godโ€™s name.

My daughter Madie (L) and her friend Rou (R) taking “Sandy”, her car, out for another favorite activity — milkshakes

I suppose many Christian songs may sound โ€œsadโ€ to some but so many of the lyrics speak to our deepest needs.ย ย We express our longing and our hope through these โ€œsad Christian songs.โ€ย ย Most of my favorite songs fall into this category.ย ย Music gives us a beautiful channel to lift up our voices to our Father to say, “I love youโ€ or โ€œI need you.โ€ย ย We might also say we are hurting or we have been healed.ย ย I have plenty of shout out loud โ€œpraise the Lordโ€ songs in my โ€œInspirationalโ€ playlist.ย ย But I frequently play the ones that tug at my heart.ย ย

I have a friend that doesnโ€™t want to go back to her church right now because they have decided not to play music and sing songs.ย ย She has said, โ€œI can listen to a sermon anywhere.ย ย I miss the voices being lifted up to God.ย ย I miss the worship.โ€ย ย

Sometimes we need a good โ€œsadโ€ Christian song.  That beautiful expression of our love for God can bring so much love and peace to live in us.  Iโ€™d like to share with you one of those songs.  โ€œYouโ€ by Fellowship Creative, shows the need for God our Father, God our Counselor.  It praises God for His ability to mend all brokenness.  I hope you enjoy listening to it.

Whatโ€™s your favorite โ€œsad Christian songโ€ and who can you share it with today?ย ย Letโ€™s praise God with our beautiful (and not so beautifulย ) voices.

The 3 O’s of God

Day 10

How often do you talk with others about your faith and God?  I once was in a Bible study where a wonderfully kind woman described talking about Jesus as an uncomfortable used car transaction.  You walk onto the lot wanting to browse and the used car salesman starts his schtick trying to get you to buy something you really donโ€™t want.

A few years ago, I had a profound encounter with Jesus which led me on my path toward a bold faith.  One of the โ€œside effectsโ€ of this bold faith is how often I find myself talking about God with all sorts of people.  Itโ€™s through these conversations that Iโ€™ve seen varied views of God.

Omnipotent God

One very close friend, who happens to be Catholic, pictures God as an altar. Sheโ€™s currently seeking a more personal relationship with Him but for a long time God has been more of an authority figure. What I love about this God is He can move mountains. He can set the world back into order. He performs miracles the world couldnโ€™t even imagine. God the King, the Lord of Lords โ€“ itโ€™s who we press our faces to the ground in submission as we seek His grace and deliverance. Itโ€™s who we offer the only true gift we have, ourselves, as we approach His throne.

Definition of omnipotent

1:often capitalized : ALMIGHTY

2: having virtually unlimited authority or influence

Omnipresent God

I know a number of people who feel Godโ€™s presence constantly.  One woman, in her early 80s, told me He is always with her, like a friend.  She talks with Him throughout her day. He guides her with gentle touches.  He comforts her.  My sweet friend Janet, who I tease and call her Earth Mother, is finely tuned into God.  Her โ€œGod Antennaeโ€ picks up His signals through visions, feelings and dreams.  He is never far from her because she sees Him all around her โ€“ in nature, in people, in animals and in the every day.  The wonderful thing about this God is He never forgets me.  I am never lost.  He always knows where I am because I am always with Him.

Definition of omnipresent

1: present in all places at all times

Omniscient God

My friend Betsy and my mother-in-law Bev trust God completely.  Thatโ€™s because they know God has a plan.  They know deep in their hearts that all things do truly work for our good and somehow, someday their prayers will be answered.  This omniscient God is above our thoughts.  He knows what we truly need, even when we think we know better.  This is the God who sent His son to teach us His ways because He knew we needed someone who had a โ€œhuman experienceโ€ yet was without blemish.  Jesus intimately knows manโ€™s ways and Godโ€™s ways.  In my current Bible study, there are two separate โ€œlife principlesโ€ which focus on obeying God.  #2 is: Obey God and let Him handle the consequences. #5 is: Obey God even if it seems unreasonable.  Why? Because God knows the ultimate outcomes.

Definition of omniscient

1: having infinite awareness, understanding, and insight

2: possessed of universal or complete knowledge

The three Oโ€™s of God โ€“omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient โ€“ create one unimaginably powerful force.  This King, this Friend, this Teacher asks for two simple acts in return for all His gifts to us, to obey His Word and to return His love.

โ€œHe who forms the mountains, who creates the wind, and who reveals his thoughts to mankind, who turns dawn to darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth โ€“ the Lord God Almighty is his name.โ€  Amos 4:13

Christ Alone –The Great I Am

Day 8

I heard this song last year at the church I was attending. It was so beautifully done I was in tears. Every time I play this song I feel so connected to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. It lifts my heart. I find myself raising my hands in my car or out in public while taking a walk. I’m led to show my bold love for God.

This song speaks to the amazing love the Almighty pours out to us. He is our song when we don’t seem to have our own melody. He is our strength when troubles make us weak. He is forever the same and the only one worthy of complete praise.

During the last year, bold faith and expression of that faith has been my guiding principle. God defines me, not the world. God’s desires for me are my desires. I am imperfectly trying to perfect that bold faith. When I first started attending church I felt like an imposter. I knew for a fact that everyone around me had bold faith. And I did not. I stumbled and dusted myself off, all the while reaching out for His hand. I told Him, “Lord you are my hope when I cannot see the day.”

Even when I found myself as a leader of a Bible Study I felt like an imposter. Again, I just knew everyone in the group must know the Bible inside and out. They were probably experts and would see through my inadequacies. So I prayed, “Lord you are my sight, teach me how to walk by faith.”

God has guided me and provided for me through many trials and many joys. He has rescued me and He has bestowed great gifts. And so now I say, “I just wanna take my time and say, you alone are worthy of my praise.”

Wave Your White Flag

What battles are you facing right now? For me itโ€™s my fears about the direction the country is going. I am a patriot through and through. Iโ€™m not a fan of people who twist history to meet their needs for victimization. That may not sit well with people but I will not judge others for living imperfect lives while I, myself, live imperfectly every single day. That being said I can only live in Godโ€™s Truth which is the fact that the only battle I have some control over is the one that tries to pull me away from God.
.
When I donโ€™t first get on my knees and pray; when I donโ€™t continually look to the Lord for guidance; when I donโ€™t trust that God is the ultimate warrior in the battles for Truth and Justice โ€” this is when I need to remind myself to tighten my own warrior belt and take up my shield.
.
Our real battles are being fought in realms unseen. Our job is to surrender to the knowledge that God will fight for us when we ask. He will beat back the armies that wish to destroy us. And as King Jehoshaphat commanded the people of Judah to act before battle, we need to give thanks to the Lord, for His love endures forever!โ€
.
Itโ€™s time to completely turn your battles over to God. Letโ€™s face it, you havenโ€™t had too many victories without Him. Wave your white flag. Get on your knees and pray.
