One Truth

Life Lesson #4: Know the truth of Godโ€™s Word

Anyone who runs ahead and does
not continue in the teaching of
Christ does not have God; whoever
continues in the teaching has
both the Father and the Son.
2 John 9

We hear a lot of โ€œmy truth,โ€ โ€œyour truthโ€ these days.  What that really means is telling someone that their experience of a situation makes the facts of that situation flexible.   The use of this term makes it clear you arenโ€™t to question someoneโ€™s opinion.  For example, we all know how human life is created.  When a human sperm fertilizes a human egg, the new life begins its process toward a fully created human baby.  Those are facts.  The circumstances surrounding that creation of new life may be slightly different for one person or another.  But those circumstances donโ€™t create a โ€œnew truthโ€ about the creation of life.

We have now entered into the teachings found in the small letter by John (2 John) to a woman, whom scholars believe to be a home church host. In it, he reminds her that there are self-professed “teachers of the word” who have either added to or distorted Jesus’ words. He cautions her to not even allow people like that into her home for fear that people will be led astray.

There is a frightening movement in our time that says we canโ€™t agree on even basic truths.  In the world of โ€œchurch,โ€ entire denominations have turned away from scripture by voting on accepting โ€œnew truths.โ€  Iโ€™m not sure what the end goal is behind this movement except chaos.  And as Christians we know who the king of chaos is โ€“ Satan.

โ€œIf โ€˜moving forwardโ€™ leads us away from the doctrines of the person and work of Jesus Christ then that is dangerous.โ€

Warren Wiersbe on 2 John

I had a great discussion with a friend about the Gnostic texts found at Nag Hammadi.  Once the apostles trained more and more missionaries, the Word spread far and wide. But that also meant the Word of God got more and more distorted.  In fact, all the letters written by the apostles and included in the Bible have some focus on sticking with the truth of the Gospel and Jesusโ€™ words. Sure there were folks that simply misunderstood the message but there were also those that craved power and the possibility of making money off new believers (something that still happens today!)

Iโ€™m always surprised when Iโ€™m in faith-type discussions with fellow Christians and a statement about God or Jesus is said that just doesnโ€™t find its truth in the Bible.  For some, studying and reading the Bible just isnโ€™t a priority.  Yet those same Christians go out into the world professing to know and understand its truths.  Hereโ€™s a few you might recognize:

  • โ€œJesus is a socialist.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œJesus says to love and accept everyone no matter what.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œThe Bible doesnโ€™t have a problem with homosexuality (or any kind of sex outside marriage).โ€
  • โ€œThe Bible hates women.โ€
  • “I love Jesus but there are lots of different ways to salvation and God.”ย ย
  • โ€œThe Bible teaches us to hate rich people and the accumulation of wealth.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œIf you pray hard enough God will answer you.โ€ย
  • โ€œIf God doesnโ€™t answer you then you obviously have done something wrong.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œThe Bible teaches that women are less respected than men.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œJesus was just a man.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œChristians arenโ€™t supposed to express their beliefs if in a government job.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œChristians are supposed to obey the government no matter what.โ€
  • โ€œFaith should be private.โ€
  • โ€œSharing the gospel is like being a used car salesman and isnโ€™t something we should do.โ€
  • “Jesus wants you to give up everything you own and follow him.”

A few years ago, the denomination that I’ve been a member of for about 20 years authorized same-sex marriages and voted to divest from Israel.  I wrote to the leadership and made a simple request.  โ€œShow me where your decision is based on Biblical truth.โ€  And what I got in response was crickets. Because, “who do I think I am questioning those in the know?” But the great thing about Jesus is He brought the Word to all of us.

โ€œI am the vine; you are the branches.
If you remain in me and I in you, you
will bear much fruit; apart from me
you can do nothing.โ€
John 15:5

In other words, our job is to stay tightly attached to Jesus.  Stay anchored in His Holy Word.  If we could even stick with the basic message of Jesus day in and day out, we would be victorious in living out the one, most important truth โ€“ that God sent His son to give us redemption for our sins.  And our acceptance of this truth leads us to behave like saved people, attached to the great vine.

Keep this Book of the Law always
on your lips; meditate on it day
and night, so that you may be careful
to do everything written in it.
Then you will be prosperous and
successful.
Joshua 1:8

Throughout the Bible we are told to have His Holy Word on our lips, on our hearts and on our minds.  How do we do that?  For many it stops at going to church occasionally.  But what my BSGs (Bible study girls) have discovered is that to truly know and understand the great truths of the Bible is to be immersed in His Word.  To truly study on it, meditate on it, sing it, speak it and even defend it.  And then it becomes imprinted on our hearts and minds.  Too many of us go to the once a week lecture in the lecture hall and then fail to do the assigned homework.

If our homes and churches are to be true to Christ and oppose false teachers, we must know the truth.

Warren Wiersbe on 2 John

There is no true love apart from the truth of God.  He sets us on the right, good and loving path.  Love, because we know the truth, becomes action.

Stand firm then with the belt
of truth buckled around your waist,
with the breastplate of righteousness
in place.
Ephesians 6:14

We hear a lot about the need to be โ€œprogressiveโ€ in our faith so that it has relevance โ€“ or new โ€œtruths.โ€  Yet, when we read the Bible we see the same sinful behavior played out year after year, century after century.  The Greek word prokopรฉ (progress) means something different to Christians.

For the believer, this means going forward in sanctification, cutting through obstacles by the Lord’s power.

Strong’s Concordance

โ€œBy the Lordโ€™s powerโ€ โ€“ His Spirit and His Word.  Progress to a Christian is not about creating a โ€œnew truth.โ€  Itโ€™s about applying God’s truth to our lives and cutting out our worldly ways.  Itโ€™s about resting in the knowledge that God is the God of yesterday, today and tomorrow.  Itโ€™s about having peace that Jesus taught us what is right and good.  Itโ€™s about knowing that the Holy Spirit guides us through the chaos of this world.  It is our responsibility as Godโ€™s people to know the truth of His Word.

A Mirror for Jesus

Lesson 3: Imitate good, not evil

Dear friend, do not imitate
what is evil but what is good.
Anyone who does what is good
is from God.
3 John 11

Occasionally in our lives we are asked to state who we consider to be our โ€œhero or who we most admire.โ€  According to the annual United States Gallup poll the incumbent president is usually top of mind when Americans name, without prompting, which man living anywhere in the world they admire most. In the 74 times Gallup has asked the open-ended most admired man question since 1946, the incumbent president has topped the list 60 times.

When you look at the list from 2020, four of the โ€œmost admired men alive todayโ€ are politicians, one is a government employee, two are businessmen, one is an athlete and two are religious leaders.  Billy Graham is the all-time vote getter while he was still living with 61 appearances in the top 10 of this list.  That fact made me feel slightly better.

Although as a society we seem to easily agree that most politicians are not typically ones to be trusted we, for some reason, continue to view them as someone to admire.

Growing up I would have done a โ€œhard passโ€ on who to write down when asked this question.  I lived a fairly sheltered life โ€“ not much TV, only one friend, my parents didnโ€™t have many friends.  And I wouldnโ€™t have written my mom or dad on that list.  At various times in my life Iโ€™ve thanked God for somehow keeping me on a halfway straight path due to limited guidance.

According to Forbes magazine these are the ten qualities people admire most in others:

  1. Humility
  2. The ability to learn
  3. Integrity
  4. Responsibility
  5. Resilience
  6. Compassion for others
  7. Respect for others
  8. Big visions
  9. Inspire others
  10. The ability to โ€œreinvent themselvesโ€

After reading this list, did anyone come to mind?  I doubt that it was a politician.  When I got married I finally met someone that does a pretty good job meeting the high standards of this list โ€“ my mother in law.  I set upon a path of being more like her.  Someone who is kind to everyone, offers a friendly โ€œhelloโ€ at all times, thinks of and serves others, and is always looking on the bright side.  While attempting to mirror her I realized I had, in fact, been imitating someone else all along.  Someone who was inwardly focused, pessimistic, frequently angry, and had difficulty showing love.

At the end of Johnโ€™s letter to the church elder Gaius, he warns us to be careful who we choose to imitate.  He has made the case that another church leader, Diotrephes, while powerful and surely had a large following, was not up to the standards set by Jesus.  He instead turns Gaius to another Christian brother, Demetrius.

Demetrius is well spoken of by
everyoneโ€”and even by the truth
itself. We also speak well of him,
and you know that our testimony
is true.
3 John 12

You notice it isnโ€™t enough to have others speak well of someone.  John reminds us that the โ€œtruthโ€ must also be used as a measuring stick.  There are many famous people on Gallupโ€™s โ€œmost admired men aliveโ€ list.  And many have well known, serious transgressions.  Carelessness with the truth has been one of those.  But because they are famous we humans tend to set many bad behaviors aside.

When I was coaching girls softball, I watched the habits and techniques of many of the successful coaches.  I gleaned a lot of good coaching skills from them.  But there wasnโ€™t one, at the time, that I could name as most admirable.  Many parents, on the other hand, admired those coaches because they won trophies.  What they didnโ€™t mind was the abusive behavior toward their young daughters.  Unfortunately, throughout my years in youth, high school and collegiate sports I found this to be frequently the case.  And parents expected other coaches to imitate this same behavior, thinking that was a winning formula.

Last year, my BSGs (Bible Study girls) embarked on a new study called โ€œThe Proverbs 31 Woman.โ€  Now thereโ€™s a woman to admire!  Hereโ€™s an excerpt from this long list of character traits to imitate:

She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
Proverb 31: 15-18

Each week we would take a verse and apply it to our lives.  From our relationship with our husbands to our finances, our work ethic to our own health we were presented with a truly admirable touchstone for our lives.  We cleaned out our closets and our minds.  We took a hard look at our finances and our eating habits.  We used Godโ€™s Word rather than the world of the flesh to imitate.

In our world today so many people are trying to imitate the latest Instagram influencer or sports figure.  We see โ€œsuccessโ€ or fame as proof they are worthy of imitation.   We put people like Joanna Gaines or Elon Musk up high on our list. Meanwhile there are Jesus followers, who just do the good work day in and day out that truly deserve our imitation.

Join together in following my
example, brothers and sisters,
and just as you have us as a
model, keep your eyes on those
who live as we do.
Philippians 3:17

It might seem like it takes a real discerning, wise mind to know who to imitate.  But we all truly know when weโ€™ve met that โ€œsomeone.โ€  We just then need to measure that person against God’s truth. And yes, we all sin.  We all have something to which we must repent to God.  But Iโ€™d rather imitate a loving, self sacrificing person who doesnโ€™t always use her time wisely than a person who causes chaos and destruction in her wake.

Take a moment today and evaluate the answer to the question, โ€œWho do you most admire?โ€  Be honest.  Itโ€™s easy to throw off platitudes.  No one else but God is listening.  Until we can face the evil we are imitating we cannot fully become the mirrors for Jesus.

Mighty Growth

A few weeks ago, I told my husband the following: โ€œI canโ€™t wait to get back to the way things were before the pandemic.โ€  And then I stopped.  I realized that wasnโ€™t really true.  My good friend and I were having lunch this week and I shared this moment with her.  I went on to explain that yes, thereโ€™s a lot Iโ€™m hoping will โ€œget back to normalโ€ in the coming weeks but God uses every single moment in our lives for His purpose โ€“ good and bad.  He uses non-believers and believers.  I heard a pastor the other day explain that we shouldnโ€™t be asking โ€œwhyโ€ to God when faced with difficulty but rather, โ€œwhat can I learn about God or what does God want me to learn about myself?โ€

My BSGs (Bible Study Girls) were asked recently to draw a sanctification growth chart.  Sanctification meaning our faith journey toward being more like Jesus.  I drew some small spikes, a few flat lines, and then two large spikes.  From the day I clearly recall my daughter (about 2 years old at the time) spurring me to answer her questions about God and angels to today I can thankfully say my growth chart has well, grown.  The two large spikes include a large test Jesus put me through when He asked me, through a vision, to drop much of what I thought was important in life and instead feed the homeless for a year.  The second spike?  It started in February 2020 โ€“ the start of the COVID pandemic.

My church shuttered their doors.  My old Bible study group went on-line.  And then all other communication with my church ceased.  Yes, they offered a weekly video but that is not fellowship.  A cold, impersonal video just isnโ€™t โ€œchurch.โ€  Itโ€™s not a communion of the saints.

My new BSGs, however, stayed in constant contact.  Some of us came together in person with walks and distanced lunches.  And together we made a commitment to not let each other go and to help each member delve deeper into His Word.  We have been open about our sins and our dreams.  Our hopes and our failures.

But more than just this group, I have fallen often on my knees in prayer.  Sometimes crying out in fear and sometimes in sadness.  Other times in thankful hallelujah.  Had I been left to attending Sunday church for one hour a week Iโ€™m not sure I wouldโ€™ve made the same progress.  But I can tell you this, of all the things Iโ€™m most grateful for over the past year is what I now understand to be the most important โ€“ Godโ€™s never ending love for me.

His Word has been revealed to me in so many amazing ways.  Iโ€™ve discovered the majesty of the Lord and His faithful promises.  Iโ€™ve learned about the perils of disobedience and the joys of freedom that obedience brings.   Through His Word Iโ€™ve learned how to hold the line of faith and to recognize when the devil is trying to loosen my grip.

While reading Warren Wiersbeโ€™s commentary on the book of Jude I came across this powerful yet simple message to Christians everywhere:

Every Church = Bible Institute

Every Christian = Bible student

Every Pulpit = Teach the positive words of Biblical truth AND denounce error

Are you a student of the Bible?  We are well-versed in so many other unnecessary aspects of life: the details of every episode of Downton Abbey (or pick your favorite show), the stats of our favorite baseball (golf, basketball, etc) player, the ins and outs of Joanna Gainesโ€™ life.  You get the picture.  But can we say the same about every single book in the Bible?

My same friend I mentioned earlier asked me what I thought about the books that werenโ€™t included in the Bible.  I told her, โ€œTo be honest, if I could just become extremely knowledgeable about the ones in it, I think Iโ€™d be doing pretty good.โ€

And thatโ€™s I why I chose for my next series, Tiny But Mighty: 15 life lessons from the Bibleโ€™s smallest books.  If you have never read these five books you could tackle them in about an hour (or less).  But Iโ€™ll be honest, my first read through these left me thinking, โ€œThereโ€™s a lot more than 15 lessons here.โ€

During the next 5 weeks we will discover more about how to confront a difficult situation, why love is obedience, how to really make social change, the effects of disloyalty, our role as Godโ€™s soldier and much more.

So, jump on board, join me in this sanctification journey!  We may be just one Christian on this path to glory but God is sure to use us and the more we know about His will, the more He can do with us.  We may be tiny but we sure can be mighty.

Retire Our Gavels

Therefore let us stop
passing judgment on one
another. Instead, make
up your mind not to put
any stumbling block or
obstacle in the way of
a brother or sister.
Romans 14:10

A prayer to not be judgemental of others

Holy God, we live in a world that judges us on a photo that gets scrolled by in an instant, our decision at the ballot box, the type of car we drive, or even the color of our skin.  I am guilty of making snap judgements about the people I encounter throughout my day.  But in your world, LORD, we are all equally loved.  I have discovered the uniqueness of your message through Jesus โ€“ that you are the father, king, counselor, protector of ALL people.  You are at work in all of our lives, believer and non-believer.  Through the life lessons of Jesus and the prompting of the Holy Spirit I will be the type of person who loves first, rather than judges first.  I want to be loved and accepted for who I am uniquely made to be and I will see others in that same light.  I pray this in your Sonโ€™s name, Amen

Recently, my BSGs were talking about why the worldโ€™s major religions continue to reject Jesus.  We had a great discussion about the belief systems of Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Jews.  It was great to see how knowledgeable the group was from either taking classes or reading up on the topic.  What stood out to me is how much more restrictive these other religions truly are and how much work they require of their followers to attain their end goal.  And when we start requiring people to work for their salvation it seems to inevitably lead to hierarchies or even caste-type systems.

You, then, why do you judge
your brother or sister? Or
why do you treat them with
contempt? For we will all
stand before Godโ€™s judgment
seat.
Galatians 6:10

Jesus swept this type of contempt away.  In one painful death, we are all promised salvation through belief in Him.  Thatโ€™s it.  No crazy ritual.  No particular way we dress.  No matter our family background.  No matter our wealth or lack thereof.  No matter our origin of birth.  No need to pray at certain times a day looking in a certain direction.  No flowers and incense placed for offering.  Just, โ€œI believe Jesus is God and my savior.โ€

What that one act does is it sets us all on even ground.  Because one day, the truth is, we will all die.  Our wealth, status, family tree, how many followers we have on Instagram will not matter one bit.  Therefore, to God, it doesnโ€™t matter right now.  He cares about one thing and one thing only โ€“ the salvation of our soul.

So why do we feel the need to judge differently?

โ€œStop judging by mere appearances,
but instead judge correctly.โ€
John 7:24

Jesus made this statement in defense of healing people on the Sabbath.  The crowd called him โ€œdemon-possessed.โ€ He stated that if a boy can be circumcised under the Law on the Sabbath why did they judge Him so harshly for healing a manโ€™s whole body on the Sabbath?  Jesus wasnโ€™t doing the things the way the crowd demanded they be done so therefore He was a borderline lunatic or heretic.

When I embarked on what I called my โ€œSparkly New Lifeโ€ a few years ago I realized my greatest issue at the time was my relentless judging of people based on โ€œThe Rules According to Kris.โ€  Itโ€™s easy to get angry and frustrated when people donโ€™t obey all your rules of life.  The statement, โ€œI hate people whoโ€ฆ.โ€ Or โ€œI hate it whenโ€ฆโ€ easily rolled off my tongue.

I have noticed this, that when a man is full of the Holy Ghost, he is the very last man to be complaining of other people.

D.L. Moody

The topic of judgement has really got us Christians into hot water over the years.  It seems our history of judging harshly while not loving others really turned people away.  And now, we have flipped to not using judgement at all.  All behavior seems to be accepted at a number of our large denominations.  As a regular ole Christian, the topic of judgement has been difficult to define.  I know Iโ€™m to love others but what does loving someone who is actively sinning against the Word look like?

James has two helpful hints on how to treat people:

  1. My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. 2:1
  2. My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins. 5:19-20

In other words, treat the rich man and the poor man with the same respect.  And when we see a fellow Christian on the wrong tract we are to, with the help of God, try and guide them back to the Word.

Notice there is a distinction between judging the behavior of our fellow Christians and those who donโ€™t know the Word.  Itโ€™s unkind and unhelpful to expect behaviors from people who either donโ€™t know what theyโ€™re doing is wrong or just donโ€™t believe in God and His consequences.  But no matter the situation we are to act like Jesus โ€“ with lovingkindness.  And for us non-perfect people, with the recognition that the log in our eye is our first priority.

I am so thankful for the grace that God affords me and the love He piles on me.  The days I leave the house looking like I should never have left my bed.  The days I canโ€™t find my smile.  For the days when my beat-up VW bug was my only transportation.  For the days when I couldnโ€™t afford the coolest jeans.  For the days when my child was screaming bloody murder in the store and I couldnโ€™t quiet her.  All of it โ€“ my good side and my not so great side that I present to the world โ€“ God loves me no matter what.  I want to be like that for others.  A person who sees what God sees in others.

If you want this too, add the prayer to your daily prayer list and watch and see how God works in your life!

The True Story of God With Us

Therefore the Lord himself
will give youย a sign:
The virginย will conceive
and give birth to a son,
andย will call him Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14

At the time that Isaiah spoke this prophecy the nation of Judah was under a large threat from Assyria.  Alliances were being pressured and formed.  King Ahaz of Judah refused to align himself with the northern tribes because he had secretly made a pact with the Assyrians.  He didnโ€™t grab hold of Godโ€™s past deliverances and trust God to save him and his people.

Isaiah made his prophesy about the coming savior to the entire House of David as a warning to trust God and no one else.  God is with us (โ€œImmanuelโ€) in so far as we are willing to trust and believe Him.

God is with me.ย ย I hold on tightly to the knowledge that His Holy Spirit dwells in my heart, mind and soul.ย ย Itโ€™s a promise completely fulfilled with Jesus.ย ย And yet, I still occasionally fall into the trap of looking for a savior outside that promise.ย ย A chance to make more money, a politician who scatters promises like birdseed, a new diet to get me โ€œback on trackโ€ or a vaccine that will make the world โ€œnormalโ€ again.

Promise made and promises broken

My BSGs just finished a section in our study of Everyday Theology.ย ย It focused on scripture โ€“ its validity, relevance, purpose and origins.ย ย We discussed how our modern times reflect Biblical times in so many ways.ย ย Warring political factions, the lack of faith, and how the promises of God still stand true for today.ย ย

Our world needs to grab on to the truths of scripture.ย ย The Bible isnโ€™t just some book some random guys put together.ย ย It is what the study author calls, โ€œGod-breathed.โ€ย ย There is no other book on the planet that has as much historical evidence to support what it says.ย ย I asked the group why did the author choose to start a book about theology with the topic of scripture rather than say, God?ย ย

One member responded quite rightly, โ€œBecause the Bible gives us the character of God so we can better understand who He is.โ€

I gave the visual of using an encyclopedia book โ€“ yes, the actual book.ย ย In the ole timey days we would hear about something and turn to the encyclopedia to learn more about it.ย ย We knew what was written in that book was true.ย ย No doubts.ย ย After reading all about say, Marie Curie, we could be assured we knew just about everything we needed to know.

Thatโ€™s how we should view the Bible โ€“ the true and relevant encyclopedia about God.ย ย And know that itโ€™s all true.ย ย So, when Isaiah prophesizes the birth of Jesus hundreds of years prior to his birth, we can see it as confirmation of the whole story being true.

All Scripture is God-breathedย
and is useful for teaching,ย
rebuking, correcting and training
in righteousness, so that the
servant of Godย may be thoroughly
equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17

And knowing it is true โ€“ that Jesus came to be our savior and the Holy Spirit would dwell in us for all time โ€“ should cause us to look toward Him and hold on to Him as our only savior.

Historical Perspective

Iโ€™ve heard a lot of media types say this year is one of the most difficult โ€œof all time.โ€ As humans we tend to look at history from our own timeframe. When we do that it negates all the trials and tribulations so many before us have endured.

As Christians we need to grasp hold of the many promises of which God clearly states in His Holy Word. When we do, we find that people have successfully endured extreme hardships for 1,000s of years because they placed their faith in Him.

Amazing Directives

Saulโ€™s Conversion

Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lordโ€™s disciples.ย He went to the high priestย and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus,ย so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way,ย whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.ย As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.ย He fell to the ground and heard a voiceย say to him,ย โ€œSaul, Saul, why do you persecute me?โ€

โ€œWho are you, Lord?โ€ Saul asked. โ€œI am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,โ€ย he replied.ย โ€œNow get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.โ€

ย The men traveling with Saul stood there amazed; they heard the soundย but did not see anyone.

Acts 9:1-6

These last 11 months my BSGs have completed four different Bible studies. We have to laugh now after every question that asks something along the line of, โ€œWhat does God expect of us?โ€  The answer is always to obey.  If only we humans could figure that part out.  Yes, at times Jesusโ€™ teachings seem a bit fuzzy.  In fact, during His last few hours His disciples were very confused.

At this, some of his disciples said to one another, โ€œWhat does he mean by saying,ย โ€˜In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,โ€™ย andย โ€˜Because I am going to the Fatherโ€™?โ€

John 16:17

And as Jesus continues in John 16: 28 with, โ€œI came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father,โ€ the disciples reply with โ€œAh, now you are speaking plainly!โ€ย ย So often we may think that Jesus is only the figurative speaker.ย ย And we need to pray on and discern what He may truly want from us.ย ย But by studying the Word and therefore the character of Jesus we find His is more the plain speaker than not.

When Jesus told Saul, โ€œNow get up and go into the cityโ€ there were no ifs, ands, or buts.ย ย Do it.ย ย Obey.ย ย Yes, Saul had the choice to do it or not.ย ย Thankfully, he listened and obeyed Jesusโ€™ amazing directive.ย ย ย Twice I have had God speak to me in very loud, definitive terms. Once in hearing His actual voice convicting me to true action in my spiritual life.ย ย And once in a vision directing me to do His works.ย ย And I obeyed.ย ย And yet there are many, many other times when I have heard His quieter voice directing me and I questioned or even ignored Him.

How many times has He clearly told you to stop and speak to someone and you refused?ย ย How many times has you told you exactly what you need to do to lose weight, stop smoking, stop hating, stop doing something destructive and start living out His Word?ย ย In one of my Bible studies this week a friend told me of a vision she once had.ย ย Her relationship with Jesus has been tumultuous because of family issues.ย ย She leans a lot on Eastern religions.ย ย In this vision she was being loved as a baby and coddled by the Dali Lama.ย ย And then Jesus approached and the Dali Lama handed her over to Jesus.ย ย She screamed โ€œNO!โ€ย ย What I found so fascinating about this and all the times I, myself, have refused to obey, is how we humans so easily place ourselves above the Divine.ย ย You realize that is exactly what we do when we ignore the amazing directives of Jesus?ย ย We think we know better.ย ย But we can never see the whole story of our lives.ย ย We can never fully understand how interconnected all our actions or inactions are and the impact they may make.

About three months ago my friend Caroline was asked to obey an amazing Jesus directive.ย ย While walking through the patio at church she saw a young woman sitting by herself.ย ย Jesus said, โ€œGo talk to her.โ€ย ย Now, my friend is not some uber, outgoing person so this made her feel a little uncomfortable.ย ย But because of the Bible study we were doing at the time she said, โ€œokโ€ and sat down with the young woman.ย ย During the conversation she found out that this young woman, who recently moved from out of town to go to college nearby, was in fact a college classmate of her own daughter.ย ย She passed along her daughterโ€™s phone number.ย ย The tasks being obeyed, the young woman and my friend went about their lives.ย ย Fast forward to yesterday.ย ย This is the text my friend received from that young woman:

“Hi!! I know this seems so random but Iโ€™m actually heading back to Hawaii for Thanksgiving until January and Iโ€™ve just been doing a lot of reflecting on all the amazing people I met here in the last 3 months and feeling so grateful! I just wanted to say thanks for reaching out to me that one night, I remember feeling kind of uncomfortable but it was so special and such a gift from God that I was able to chat with you and see that we had so many connections already!! Anyways, just wanted to say thank you again and Iโ€™m so appreciative of that time that you took to chat with me!”

My friend obeyed Jesusโ€™ directive of a simple act of hospitality and a life was changed.

Trusting God means looking beyond what we can see to what God sees.

Life Principle 9, Charles F. Stanley

Jesus says to, โ€œFollow me.โ€ย ย Itโ€™s an opportunity for us to obey.ย ย And as my faith journey this year has evolved, I realized my growth spurts have come each time I have listened to an amazing directive and obeyed.ย ย Each time my trust grows is each time His trust in me grows.ย ย Yes, His trust in me.ย ย Because until we can be trusted to obey His small directives, like helping the person in the grocery store parking lot, He wonโ€™t entrust with something bigger.ย ย And I donโ€™t know about you but I want Jesus to trust me enough that I will do His amazing works till the end of my days.

Today when you hear that whispered directive from Jesus, obey.ย ย You know His voice.ย ย You know His character.ย ย He and satan are clearly differentiated.ย ย So stop questioning Him.ย ย Obey.

Our Amazing Influence

Simon the Sorcerer

Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorceryย in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,ย and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, โ€œThis man is rightly called the Great Power of God.โ€They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery.ย But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of Godย and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized,ย both men and women.ย Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, amazed by the great signs and miraclesย he saw.

Acts 8:9-13

Itโ€™s my guess that before many of us heard Jesusโ€™ words in Matthew 10:39,  โ€œWhoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find itโ€, we all thought we were some level of great.

Itโ€™s okay, you can admit it. I will too. Before knowing Jesus, our lives were centered around the greatness of self. Achieving selfish desires and seeking after things that would fulfill and establish a name for ourselves. I know before I knew Christ, I was on a slippery slope of idolization of self-value and worth โ€“ mainly in what others thought of me. I so desperately wanted to be like Simon. I wanted to be looked upon by those low and high with great respect, reverence and awe. I thought that if I could just attain a certain level of status with those I looked up to most, then certainly, I would be fulfilled.ย

As described in the text, Simon had great fame amongst the people of Samaria. Those who knew him even thought he was god-like. He had all eyes on him, all the time. He knew how to command a room and keep their attention with amazing and impressive acts of sorcery and magic. Surely, this was the peak of Simonโ€™s life. He had great influence over those who looked up to him. The people listened to him and were continuouslyย amazedย by him.ย

Are you looking for glitz to influence or God?

But one day, Simon found the attention of the people was no longer in the palm of his hands. Someone else was stealing the showโ€ฆ

Philip had stolen the attention of his audience with the truth of the gospel. Now all of a sudden, the people were more interested in hearing about Jesus, rather than seeing Simonโ€™s sorcery, and Simon was too.ย

Miraculously, Simon was also among the many who were touched by Philipโ€™s faithfulness to share the gospel everywhere he went. Simon became a follower of Philip and chose to no longer be a chief producer of propaganda for himself, but a disciple of Jesus, and one who laid down his โ€œgreatnessโ€ to serve the one and only Great God.ย ย

Many of us look at Simonโ€™s life before Christ and think, โ€œMan, he had it all.โ€ I mean, being a magician is no noble or holy position, but he had the love and respect of the people — two things every human being deeply long for more than anything else. The fact of the matter is, the influence Simon had on those people was superficial, surface level and would only last for a while until they found their next source of entertainment. His influence didnโ€™t have deep roots in their hearts, it wasnโ€™t truth-centered.ย

The same goes with the superficial influence many of us THINK will make a lasting impact on others. We want the status, the attention and the glamour, but in reality all of that, will amount to nothing.

True, deeply-rooted influence on others takes time. It takes a gospel-centered approach that puts the othersโ€™ hearts and souls first. It takes laboring in love, sacrificing time and resources and really listening to what the other person has to say. Simon may have captured the attention of the townspeople, but it didnโ€™t take much for someone like Philip, who brought both truth and love, to steal their attention.ย

Now, loving others and sharing the gospel is certainly no popularity contest. But, establishing effective and genuine and amazing influence is key to making strides for the Kingdom.ย

So, what kind of influence have you been attempting to have on others? Do you seek glitz and glamour like Simon? Or, have you sought genuine, amazing relationships that are truth-based like Philip?ย

Consider those around you who look up to you and think of how you can take one step towards influencing them towards Christ-centeredness today.ย

Amazing Presence

As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;ย but they were kept from recognizing him.

He asked them,ย โ€œWhat are you discussing together as you walk along?โ€

They stood still, their faces downcast.ย One of them, named Cleopas,ย asked him, โ€œAre you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?โ€

โ€œWhat things?โ€ย he asked.

โ€œAbout Jesus of Nazareth,โ€ย they replied. โ€œHe was a prophet,ย powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.ย The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him;ย but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.ย And what is more, it is the third dayย since all this took place.ย In addition, some of our women amazed us.ย They went to the tomb early this morningย but didnโ€™t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.ย Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.โ€

He said to them,ย โ€œHow foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!ย Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?โ€

Luke 24:16-26

Depending on how Messianic scholars classify the prophesies in the Old Testament about the coming of Jesus, you will find between 200 and more than 400 statements about the Son of God becoming a man to teach us and be our ultimate sacrifice.  Given that information, which was taught throughout the Jewish faith, you have to wonder why anyone at the time of Jesusโ€™ death didnโ€™t understand what was going on.  It shouldnโ€™t have been a surprise that He would also be resurrected.  Yet disciple after disciple, woman and man, we see either their disbelief or shocking amazement when Jesus stood with them after His death.

But we canโ€™t be too hard on those people of old.ย ย I mean we have 1,000s of years of Bible study, the hindsight of the entire New Testament, and more Bible scholars and preachers than we could ever count explaining the connections and the truths of this amazing story.ย ย And yet so many of us, even Christians, have a hard time truly accepting that Jesus is with us, even today.ย ย He stands in front of us with an open hand almost pleading with us to surrender and follow Him.ย ย He stands next to us, holding our hand, as we take scary, daring steps of faith.ย ย And He stands watch over us guiding and protecting us.ย ย When we fully accept that Jesus is our Lord and Savior, we can feel His constant, amazing presence.

I heard a sermon the other day by Joyce Meyer called, โ€œWhat is Faith?โ€  In it she encourages those whose families are grown and left the nest, who have lost spouses, who feel as though no one loves them, to grasp on to the knowledge that Jesus is ever-present in our lives.  He is with us when we go to the grocery store.  He is with us when we sit and watch a sunset.  He is with us when we lie down, alone, in our beds.

I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are oneโ€”ย I in them and you in meโ€”so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent meย and have loved themย even as you have loved me.

John 18:22-23

When we read the verses today in Luke 24, we might gloss over the fact that Jesus had already died.ย ย What happened on that road to Emmaus could have just as easily been written today.ย ย There was nothing special about the two men to which Jesus appeared.ย ย They are you and me.ย ย We can leave church or a Bible study waxing philosophical about the amazing presence of Jesus โ€œway back whenโ€ and completely miss that He is walking right there with us!ย ย

I once heard a woman in a Bible study say to the group, โ€œHow come God doesnโ€™t talk to us like He did in the Bible?โ€  I found it fascinating that this person has somehow missed the prolific authors who have received urgings and messages from the Holy Spirit.  She somehow has ignored all the testimonials she has heard in church from people who have been miraculously saved.  She somehow missed my own telling, to that very group, of my Jesus vision.

โ€œUnless you people see signs and wonders,โ€ Jesus told him, โ€œyou will never believe.โ€ย

John 4:48

Are you ignoring Jesusโ€™ amazing, constant presence?ย ย Has he walked along with you, sat at your dinner table and you didnโ€™t acknowledge it was Him?ย ย Are you looking for a burning bush outside your door to speak in a Charlton Heston-esque voice to make decisions for you?ย ย Iโ€™m not saying that wonโ€™t happen but Jesusโ€™ character is a lot more quiet and gentle.ย ย He wants you to have the โ€œah ha momentโ€ like the men in our story today.ย ย He leads you, tiny step by step to clearing the mud from your eyes and ears.ย ย And if you will only accept the burning bush as โ€œproofโ€ of His presence you will surely miss Him along the path.
