Amazing Truths

And as he taught them, he said,ย โ€œIs it not written: โ€˜My house will be called a house of prayer for all nationsโ€™?ย But you have made it โ€˜a den of robbers.โ€™โ€

The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,ย because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

Mark 11:17-18

Recently, during a road trip my husband and I were listening to the Robertsonโ€™s Unashamed podcast.ย ย The topic was the concept of being โ€œcancelledโ€ by society.ย ย In 2014, GQ magazine contacted the Duck Dynasty patriarch, Phil Robertson, to delve into this bearded phenomenon.ย ย During the interview he was asked for the definition of sin.ย ย He went on to quote 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterersย nor men who have sex with menย nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlersย will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Cor 6: 9-10

And he got cancelled.ย ย Literally.ย ย The producers put the show on hiatus โ€“ for quoting the Bible.ย ย Now, of course, we all can imagine the uproar.ย ย The media quoted Mr. Robertson as though it were his own words, calling him a homophobe and all sorts of names.ย ย Very few, in fact only a newspaper out of London, made it clear he was quoting from the Bible.ย ย As we like to say now, it was a lot of fake news.ย ย The truth was so easily accessed and so readily ignored.ย ย Here was a man who had few, if any secrets โ€“ and absolutely none about his faith journey.ย ย He was on an internationally televised show praying and preaching.ย ย And yet amazingly enough the media seemed shocked he believed in, taught, and quoted the Bible.

Jesus, in Mark 11, walks into the temple in Jerusalem and begins driving out the street vendors.ย ย When questioned by the chief priests He makes it clear what God expects from the people and the use of His temple.ย ย The priests were so frightened by the truths being spoken to the people that they wanted Jesus โ€œcancelled.โ€ย ย But do you notice the last part of the sentence? โ€œโ€ฆbecause the whole crowd was amazed at His teaching.โ€ย ย The people wanted to know the true Word of God and they listened with rapt attention.ย ย It frightened those in charge of their probable loss of power over the people.

What Phil Robertson is comfortable with is teaching the true Word of God to the people.ย ย Human sin is at the beginning through the end of the Bible. And much as we might like to, we arenโ€™t to pick and choose from which sins God has spoken.ย ย The truth of sin is written in every single book of the Bible.ย ย When our pastors and faith leaders ignore these truths, it handicaps us in our full understanding of Godโ€™s character and His expectations of us.

My husband and I were talking about this after listening to the Unashamed podcast.ย ย If we never hear that we are all sinners, we are left with the impression that maybe only some people sin or thereโ€™s various levels of sinfulness.ย ย It isnโ€™t just โ€œthose peopleโ€ who are sexually immoral, who lie, who cheat, who create false idols.ย ย Itโ€™s all of us to one extent or another.ย ย Thatโ€™s the truth.ย ย Iโ€™ve never met someone in all the various Bible study and small groups that hasnโ€™t admitted to some kind of sin.ย ย But thatโ€™s only the first step to Godโ€™s amazing truths.

When the apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth he chastised them for their lax ways related to sin, especially sexual sin. It was being justified through false teachings. And it was tearing them apart. If we donโ€™t learn about sin how can we then learn true grace and forgiveness?ย ย I want to be on the โ€œright sideโ€ of God โ€“ not making up my own understandings.ย ย When our faith leaders avoid uncomfortable conversations like abortion, homosexuality, infidelity, etc how then are we lay people to fully understand how to treat people with grace, love, kindness and forgiveness?ย ย All are welcome to church but what does it mean to welcome someone who is sinning right now?ย ย What does it mean to have been sexually immoral or have had an abortion and now I want to live a Christian life?

I sin constantly.ย ย When I make a commitment to God to not use His name in vain and then turn around and cuss and use coarse language Iโ€™m sinning.ย ย I have a very difficult time honoring my parents and not trashing them to my inner circle (heck, even my outer, outer circle).ย  I encouraged a friend to have an abortion. I lived with my husband before we were married. ย Iโ€™m prideful.ย ย I covet.ย ย I place idols above God.ย ย None of these make me any better or worse than those who commit the sins we tend to think as the โ€œbiggies.โ€ย ย And yet we dance around the truth of sin and its effects on our lives and the world.

God is the Alpha and Omega.ย ย He is always complete.ย ย He is always teaching us and bringing us full circle.ย ย We need to live in that completeness.ย ย The completeness that His amazing truths, as revealed in the Bible, tell us includes opening our eyes to sin AND our hearts to grace.ย ย Grace without the โ€œwhat and whyโ€ is almost meaningless.ย ย Itโ€™s like a teenager tossing a snide โ€œsooooorrrryy.โ€ย ย We want that teenager to understand what was wrong about their action and why.ย ย The apology, when spoken from the heart, means so much more.ย ย If we run around tossing out blind acceptance, thinking it is love and grace, we miss out on the opportunity to really dig into Godโ€™s amazing plan for us.ย ย

I want to be held to account by God.ย ย I want to be amazed by the truths written in His Book.ย ย ย And if knowing and speaking those truths to fellow Christians or people asking me what God says about a topic then so be it.ย ย Because I am learning the complete truth.ย ย I am learning each day how to have open eyes tied to an open heart.ย ย His amazing truths about my sin are made complete with His amazing truths about His love.

Our Flappy Rudder

I sat there as only one of two women coaches in the room.ย ย There were about 20 of us, coaching girls softball ages 7 to 15.ย ย We had recently finished the fall season where I had told my assistant coach to never step foot on a field where I was coaching.ย ย He constantly undermined my authority, which came to a head one night where he threatened me with physical harm.ย ย Yes, this was kidsโ€™ sports at its finest.ย ย So back to this meeting.ย ย We were all there to be confirmed as coaches for the Spring season.ย ย That assistant coach was also present.ย ย He asked to speak before we were voted in by the board.ย ย He went into a tirade about me and how if I were to be confirmed as a coach, he would go to the city parks and recreation board and have our field permit rescinded.ย ย He and the president of the association got into a few aggressive back and forths.ย ย I, however, spoke not a word.

He finally sat down.ย ย A vote was taken and I was still a coach.ย ย Afterwards, a number of the other male coaches came up to congratulate me โ€“ for being so brave and not getting into a yelling match.ย ย They were very impressed.ย ย I was escorted to my car where I sat for a minute and finally took what seemed like was my first breath after the hours long meeting.ย ย I hadnโ€™t spoken because I could barely even breathe.ย ย I had been so scared I couldnโ€™t speak.ย ย I didnโ€™t know it then but God was protecting me.ย ย He knew had I spoken up among all those men, my โ€œheroโ€ status wouldโ€™ve instead turned in to โ€œshrill siren.โ€ย ย By keeping my mouth shut I accomplished so much more.

โ€œThe tongue is a small part of the body but it makes great boasts.ย ย Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.โ€

James 3:5

How many times have we looked back at a conversation or disagreement and thought, โ€œif I had just kept my darn mouth shut, I wouldnโ€™t be in this situation?โ€  I donโ€™t know about you but I donโ€™t have enough digits to keep track.  While others may struggle with not knowing what to say, others of us say too much.

โ€œSet a guard, Oh Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.โ€

PS 141:3

This needs to be tattooed on all our foreheads so that when we are talking (or yelling) to each other we can โ€œgetโ€ the message.ย ย ย I read recently the concept that words are just the outward expression of our hearts and minds.ย ย When you see someone screaming in a police officerโ€™s face these days, I think how shriveled their hearts must be.ย ย They are literally out of their minds spewing hatred to another person.ย ย When we have a false sense of righteousness, not true righteousness from the Truth of Godโ€™s Word, we get into areas of entitlement, judgement, self-worth, and envy.ย ย

Our words matter and we shouldnโ€™t use them to just fill up space or hurt people or say things to make us feel better.ย ย I once worked with a man to whom silence was a way of life.ย ย It made me very uncomfortable; my youthful self always needed to fill that void.ย ย A topic or question would be thrown out and he would go silent.ย ย Meanwhile, Iโ€™m across the table babbling away.ย ย I definitely did not have spiritual maturity at the time.ย ย Through life experiences and a pursuit of Godโ€™s wisdom I am learning to enjoy a bit of silence.ย ย A bit.ย ย As a parent, I struggled with this powerful tool.ย ย As my kids got older, I realized silence could sometimes be scarier than a mom yelling on and on.ย ย And when I yelled, filling that void, I said hurtful things.ย ย Things that I can never take back.ย ย

โ€œWith our tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in Godโ€™s likeness.โ€

James 3:9

That last part needs repeating โ€“ when we are cursing others, we are cursing people WHO HAVE BEEN MADE IN GODโ€™S LIKENESS.ย ย And when we yell, scream, say hurtful things we do so with lack of grace, mercy and forgiveness.ย ย But if we are faithful over small things โ€“ like our tongue โ€“ and use them to bless others then God has promised to make us rulers over bigger things.ย ย If we canโ€™t stop corrupting our whole body — hardening our hearts and going out of our minds– because we canโ€™t control that little flappy part in our mouth, then why should God give us more?

I heard a pastor give a challenge the other day called โ€œWhat If?โ€  It goes like this:

  1. What if we decided to stop cursing, right now, forever?
  2. What if we decided to never say another negative thing?
  3. What if we decided here and now to never complain?

I bet a whole lot of people around us would be blessed.  But that all sounds sooooo difficult!  Not when you have God by your side.  Not when we walk in the steps He wants for us.  Not when we decide to live the life He calls us to.  Yes, we will be tempted.  Yes, there will be trials and tests.  Because without those how do we know we are victorious?

โ€œThis is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.โ€

1 Cor 2:13

In other words, when we live in Godโ€™s world, accept and practice His teaching, and turn to Him for guidance and prayer, it will be His Words spoken when we face trials and temptation.ย ย Or maybe, no words at all.ย ย We have the mind of Christ inside us.ย ย We need to stop pushing Him aside and let Him rule that little, flappy rudder in our mouth.ย ย And only then will be sent on the right journey He has called us to.

God Woos Us

During my years of attending church and going to bible studies I have heard many scripture verses surrounding love:

โ€œFor God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son.โ€ John 3:16

โ€œLove is patient, love is kind.โ€ 1 Corinthians 13:4

โ€œAnd now these three remain; faith, hope and love.  But the greatest of these is love.โ€ 1 Corinthians 13:13

There are scriptures about how God loves us, how we are to love God and love our friends, neighbors and enemies.  We donโ€™t, however, always equate this โ€œloveโ€ with romantic love.  And yet, by all descriptions, the love the Holy Spirit has for us and wants in return is just that.  Intimacy, thoughtfulness, honesty โ€“ an embrace, a tight hug, and sweet kiss โ€“ isnโ€™t that what we long for in our โ€œromanticโ€ relationships?  And the Holy Spirit is all about that kind of love.

A pastor at one of my previous churches wrote, what some considered a controversial book about the Holy Spirit, called, Iโ€™m In โค.  Controversial because he is part of a corporate-style faith where we worship, but not too exuberantly.  We pray but not too boldly.  We love but out of reverence.  In the first chapter of his book he writes:

โ€œSpirit wants to woo you into her arms in order to embrace you and whisper intimate truths.  Spirit offers to tutor you in vulnerability and joy.  Spirit welcomes you to trust her.  Spirit kisses you.  But this kind of love takes time to grow.  Will you let Her court you?โ€

Rev. Dr. Bruce Humphrey

So many of my conversations with my Christian friends focus on creating a personal relationship with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.  Letโ€™s face it, when you are intimate with someone you know exactly what they expect of you and if itโ€™s a mutually respectful relationship you want to meet those expectations.  The Holy Spirit is who whispers to us.  Who winks so that we both are โ€œin on the joke.โ€  She holds my hand when I am afraid to take the steps Jesus laid out for me. This โ€œcontroversialโ€ pastor goes on to write:

โ€œHere is the truth: romance requires slowing down, listening, and spending time.  As mysterious as it is, there are some basic ingredients for love to flourish.  Romance requires intentionality.  Love is a choice.  You can decide to accept the Spiritโ€™s love, or you can reject her embrace.  She will not force or compel you.  In other words, love takes commitment.

Rev. Dr. Bruce Humphrey

God is fully committed to loving you. Through the words of His son Jesus and the great counselor, the Holy Spirit, love abounds from the heavens.  Are you ready to embrace Him just as intimately? Share how God shows His love for you in the comments below!

Wave Your White Flag

What battles are you facing right now? For me itโ€™s my fears about the direction the country is going. I am a patriot through and through. Iโ€™m not a fan of people who twist history to meet their needs for victimization. That may not sit well with people but I will not judge others for living imperfect lives while I, myself, live imperfectly every single day. That being said I can only live in Godโ€™s Truth which is the fact that the only battle I have some control over is the one that tries to pull me away from God.
.
When I donโ€™t first get on my knees and pray; when I donโ€™t continually look to the Lord for guidance; when I donโ€™t trust that God is the ultimate warrior in the battles for Truth and Justice โ€” this is when I need to remind myself to tighten my own warrior belt and take up my shield.
.
Our real battles are being fought in realms unseen. Our job is to surrender to the knowledge that God will fight for us when we ask. He will beat back the armies that wish to destroy us. And as King Jehoshaphat commanded the people of Judah to act before battle, we need to give thanks to the Lord, for His love endures forever!โ€
.
Itโ€™s time to completely turn your battles over to God. Letโ€™s face it, you havenโ€™t had too many victories without Him. Wave your white flag. Get on your knees and pray.

Join me starting July 27 as I begin 30 Days of Praise for all the great things God has done. Follow me to enjoy this journey! http://www.emboldened.net.

Doubt & Mercy

Whatโ€™s your reaction when encountering people who doubt โ€” doubt your understanding of facts, science, faith, morals, values?
.
Weโ€™ve become this society where what we know to be true and good and right is what everyone else MUST agree with. At a time when youโ€™d think weโ€™d grown to be more interested in varied ideas itโ€™s seems our desires to expand our minds and sphere of real friends keeps shrinking. An โ€œecho chamberโ€ is one in which we can only hear our voice. And unless we are God, our voice can frequently be wrong.
.
As a Christian, I see other Christians falling into a sea of doubt about the lessons and way of life we are called to. We donโ€™t want to be the lone voice outside societyโ€™s echo chamber. On the flip side we are called to be our Christian brothersโ€™ keepers โ€” being merciful to followers who struggle against societal lies and snatching each other out of the fires. And even more merciful to non-followers who have yet to accept the Truth of God.
.
A Christianโ€™s โ€œdoubtโ€ should only lie in the struggle with Godโ€™s Word as lived out in the worldโ€” not the Truth of Godโ€™s Word. When we see our Christian loved ones sinking further into that struggle with the world is when we need to act with Godโ€™s authority and be His lifeline.
.
When you doubt the right way to live out your life what action do you hope those around you take? Mercy or with condemnation?

Clear Eyes Open Heart

As Iโ€™ve gotten older my allergies have gotten worse. Iโ€™ve had sinus surgery and Iโ€™m currently going through the allergy shot regimen. And yet I still need to take allergy pills both in the morning and at night. In the early years of this battle I experimented with different allergy medications. Some made me incredibly sleepy and foggy. I saw a commercial for the brand Claritin. What caught my attention was the line โ€œClaritin Clear.โ€ The commercial shows a foggy view of the world. And after taking their product that foggy film is stripped away. Thatโ€™s what I needed. What I didnโ€™t realize at the time was not only were my allergies making my view of the world foggy but so was my lack of trust in God.

My friend and I were out for a walk and I was struck with the fact that she has taken Godโ€™s allergy medication. For one, three different devotionals she read that day pleaded the same action: Trust in the Lord with all you heart and all your mind and all your soul and lean not on your own understanding (Prov 3:5). I told her sometimes God whispers and sometimes He shouts and shakes us! Both are to get us to open our eyes and ears to the truth of our lives โ€” to be God Clear. For another, sheโ€™s leaning into Godโ€™s grace of that medicine and surrendering.

But the work is not done. In fact the clearing of our eyes can be painful. Just like my twice weekly allergy shots (I hate shots), growth often starts with pain. If we stop because of the pain we can never fully achieve our greatest gifts from God. He wants so much for us โ€” a life free of self doubt, self loathing, and turmoil. But we must first peel away the lies that Satan so readily whispers to us.

Where are you at in this process? Have you tried trusting God but it seems too scary, too painful? My friend a glorious, clear life awaits you. Trust in Godโ€™s holy medicine to bring you through the pain.

God Is Our Founding Father

Did you know that God is mentioned in every single US State constitution? All total, God is mentioned 200 times in these documents. It doesnโ€™t matter which decade the state entered the Union. Yes, even California.

So when someone tries to โ€œtell you their truthโ€ that the United States was not founded by and with God, tighten up your belt of truth, be bold, and with grace give them the gift of education they missed along the way. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
