"The heavensย declareย the glory of God; the skiesย proclaim the work of his hands." Psalm 19:1
MerryโChristmas Eve!โMyโhope is that youโare not only enjoying time withโfamily but also time inโprayerโthanking God for what we truly celebrate at this time — that theโWord became flesh to be our onlyโSavior.โ We need to grasp the immense hope this event holds, not just forโbelievers but for all people.โIn turn, we should grieve for our friends, family, neighbors and strangers whoโeither haven’t heard of this hope or have rejected it.โ
I’ve been thinking on a few people I know who are not Christians, yet celebrate during this time of year.โI knowโaโfamilyโwhose grandmother is Catholic yet her children and grandchildren are unbelievers.โInโfact, one grandchild converted to Judaism toโmarryโher husband.โShe converted not out of faith but out of cultural requirements.โSo on Christmas Day they will celebrate Gift Giving, not Jesus.โ It’s a curious evolution of a significant event inโworld history.โPeopleโfinding themselves celebrating something they don’t believe!
I can thank the Lord thatโHe changed myโheart and mind so that I can experience the fullness of the gift of Christmas.โThe gift of a Savior come to wash me clean so I can stand before the King of Kings one day.โIt’s an amazing task God has set before Jesus.โTo take on the sins of the entire world, day after day and year after year.โBut He is a powerful and glorious God!โ
When I was searching for scripture for today, I came across a psalm which speaks so beautifully of the power of God and His Holy Word — and of the greatest command to Love One Another.โSo on this Christmas Eve I want to share it with you.โAndโasโso often happens when I’mโwriting,โGodโrevealsโHimself in amazingโways.โInโfinalizingโthisโpost Iโlookedโup commentaryโonโthis psalm.โIโdiscoveredโtwoโthings.โThe first being that C.S. Lewis consideredโthis psalm to be “the greatest poem and one of the greatest lyrics in theโworld.”โSecond, traditionalโchurch lectionaryโ(which my churchโdoesn’tโfollow) assigns this psalm to be read on Christmas Day, when the “Sun of Righteousness came into the world.”โ Warren Wiersbe pointsโout theโemphasisโin this psalm is on “God’s revelation of Himself in creation, Scripture and the human heart.”
Peace be with you, my friends.โAnd may all glory be given to God.
“The heavensย declareย the glory of God;
ย ย ย ย the skiesย proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
ย ย ย ย night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words;
ย ย ย ย no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voiceย goes out into all the earth,
ย ย ย ย their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tentย for the sun.
It is like a bridegroomย coming out of his chamber,
ย ย ย ย like a championย rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens
ย ย ย ย and makes its circuit to the other;
ย ย ย ย nothing is deprived of its warmth.
The law of theย Lordย is perfect,
ย ย ย ย refreshing the soul.
The statutes of theย Lordย are trustworthy,
ย ย ย ย making wise the simple.
The precepts of theย Lordย are right,
ย ย ย ย giving joyย to the heart.
The commands of theย Lordย are radiant,
ย ย ย ย giving light to the eyes.
The fear of theย Lordย is pure,
ย ย ย ย enduring forever.
The decrees of theย Lordย are firm,
ย ย ย ย and all of them are righteous.
They are more precious than gold,
ย ย ย ย than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
ย ย ย ย than honey from the honeycomb.
By them your servant is warned;
ย ย ย ย in keeping them there is great reward.
But who can discern their own errors?
ย ย ย ย Forgive my hidden faults.
Keep your servant also from willful sins;
ย ย ย ย may they not rule over me.
Then I will be blameless,
ย ย ย ย innocent of great transgression.
May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
ย ย ย ย be pleasingย in your sight,
ย ย ย ย Lord, my Rockย and my Redeemer.” Psalm 19
