The Christian Travelerย

Forย the word of God is living andย active,ย sharper than anyย two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, andย discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.ย Hebrews 4:12

Iโ€™m that Christian who had long convinced myself that I could never memorize Bible scripture.ย ย Iโ€™m in awe of my friend Betsy who can roll out verses like a pro.ย ย She doesnโ€™t just know them; she uses scripture to comfort, encourage, convict and enlighten as she hikes her Christian path.ย ย Itโ€™s what the Bible means by taking up the โ€œsword of the Spirit.โ€ (Eph 6:17).ย ย

Earlier this year I finally understood this analogy.ย ย Without scripture at my fingertips, I was like a soldier going into battle without ammunition.ย ย Or as though I was on a road trip and forgot the most important thing to keep me going โ€“ snacks.ย ย Realizing this, I set out to memorize Isaiah 26:3-4 which says, โ€œYou keep in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.ย ย Trust in the LORD God forever for He is an everlasting rock.โ€ย ย

When my mind strays to worries, fears and all the other things of this world that pull me away from God, Iโ€™m slowly using this new weapon as a reminder.ย ย A reminder that perfect peace can only be found in the Lord.ย

Last week, we looked at corporately attaining knowledge about our Christian faith to grow in sanctification.ย Through church participation or group Bible study we gain helpful insight into Godโ€™s Word.ย ย Today, we will look at the individual means the Holy Spirit guides us on this holy journey.

Daily, personal Bible reading, whether through reading a book of the Bible, a teaching-style daily devotional, or individual Bible study book, is essential to gaining knowledge of the God we profess to be our King.ย ย Without this, we close off an avenue for the Holy Spirit to work in us.ย ย Itโ€™s our โ€œsitting at the feet of Jesus,โ€ learning His ways.

Iโ€™ve always recommended to fellow Christian travelers to do their Bible reading in the morning.  While we need to be careful not to become Pharisee-like in our routines, thereโ€™s a good reason I recommend this.

The Right Path

Why do you already do the tasks in your morning routine?ย ย You get cleaned up for the day, get energized and mentally review your daily schedule.ย ย You might even exercise somewhere in all of that.ย ย Keeping physically fit to โ€œmake it a great day.โ€ย ย All thatโ€™s wonderful, until you hit rush hour traffic or you get a flat tire.ย ย Or you get a giant project dumped on you that no one else wanted.ย ย Maybe your child suddenly throws up as youโ€™re about to take them to school.ย ย It starts raining and you had a picnic planned.

You know, life happens and itโ€™s only 8:30am.

I mentioned previously that my mom died suddenly last year.ย ย I had just finished my evening prayers when I got the phone call.ย ย Then, just four days later my 85 year old dad was given the news that his 10 year fight with bladder cancer had progressed to something much worse.ย ย My life and my schedule were instantly thrown for a loop.ย ย Each morning I did my studies and turned my schedule over to God. I began memorizing Isaiah 26. The Holy Spirit spoke through His Word encouraging me and teaching me.

On January 7, 2025 one of my devotionals used Genesis 6:22 to remind me of my purpose here on earth: “Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.” In other words, live in obedience to His will.

So, before you start your day letโ€™s get our heart, minds and souls fed and strengthened.  Letโ€™s get ourselves aligned on Godโ€™s road.  We then set out, wading through burnt toast, coffee spills, traffic, rain, clothing mishaps, annoying people, and lost phones with being tethered to Godโ€™s perfect peace.  We are fully stocked with all our favorite road trip snacks.

You may wonder where to start?  Thatโ€™s really not the problem.  The problem is just starting.  I can recommend, however, reading the book of Mark.  Itโ€™s fast paced and gives an overview of Jesusโ€™ ministry.

Roadside Service

The other daily tether on our journey is prayer.

I heard a great sermon by Tim Keller where he looks at Psalm 1 as our introduction on how to pray.ย ย Verse 2-3 says, โ€œbut whose delightย is in the law of theย Lord,ย and who meditatesย on his law day and night.โ€ย ย He explained how โ€œmeditatingโ€ is frequently misunderstood to mean gazing at our navel or the ocean.ย ย But what it really means is having a conversation with God.ย ย A two-way conversation.ย ย Talking and listening. God speaks to us through the gift of His living Word, the Bible.

Here’s Dr. Kellerโ€™s example of how to mediate on the โ€œlaw of the Lordโ€ (meaning the entire word of God):

  1. Take a piece of scripture and read it a few times
  2. For 15 minutes or so write down 10 things you observe or learn in that scripture
  3. Circle two or three things that stand out to you or have special meaning to you at that time
  4. Think on those for the remainder of your day while talking with God

I guarantee if you do that a few times a week you will grow in your knowledge of the Lord.  You will see His beautiful promises, His truths, and His expectations for your walk with Christ.

We donโ€™t need flowery poetry to talk with God.ย ย And God doesnโ€™t need you to speak in tongues (Heโ€™s well-versed in whatever language you naturally use!).ย ย You may have heard the Bible verse, โ€œpray without ceasing.โ€ย That isnโ€™t something that looks like being a cloistered monk all day.ย ย It means when something good happens, you immediately thank Him.ย ย When you are in a tough spot, ask Him.ย ย When you sin, seek forgiveness and help.ย ย In the morning seek His will, not yours, for the day.ย ย And in the evening review how you saw Him at work in your life.ย ย A constant โ€œroadside assistance serviceโ€ to our God.ย ย The Holy Spirit is ready and waiting to fill you up with the knowledge and wisdom of God through answered (or even unanswered) prayers.

Friend, do you want to grow closer to God — meaning you are walking the path of sanctification?ย ย If you want what the Bible calls โ€œthe mind of Christ,โ€ itโ€™s like any earthly relationship.ย ย You need to get to know Him.ย ย You must spend time with Him.ย ย

Through private, quiet contemplation and study and congregational teaching and worship the Holy Spirit reveals our glorious God.  He holds your hand while you travel through this Christian life.

Iโ€™ve learned a lot about how much God loves us and how to see Him throughout my day these last six months.ย ย Iโ€™ve learned on my long drives home from my dadโ€™s house after a day of doctor visits to thank God for all the ways He has helped and strengthened me.ย ย And although I havenโ€™t yet achieved โ€œperfectโ€ peace, Iโ€™m at least going in the right direction.

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.ย ย John 16:13

This weekโ€™s question: What Bible scripture have you memorized that you use often?ย ย Or which scripture would you like to memorize?

Next week: We plunge into seeking the joy of trials.

Knitted by God

I’ve been thinking alot about babies lately — not because I wantโ€‚another (I’mโ€‚way past that time!).โ€‚Yes, the talk of Jesus coming to earth as a baby has been in my mind’s forefront but alsoโ€‚my two-yearโ€‚old grandson and six-week old granddaughter hadโ€‚beenโ€‚staying with us for Christmas.โ€‚Having had two daughters of my own I still find myself fascinated with pregnancy, childbirth, and the ever-changing process of growing up.โ€‚

Even while I was pregnant yearsโ€‚ago, I thought the concept of having a human beingโ€‚inside me wasโ€‚very odd and alien-like.โ€‚The miracleโ€‚of life seemed just that, a miracle.โ€‚While tooโ€‚many people in ourโ€‚societiesโ€‚wantโ€‚toโ€‚pretend that a life growing inside a woman is not … a life, I remain in awe of how a tiny swimming seed can push its way into a tiny egg and an explosion of life begins.โ€‚What aโ€‚wondrous miracle God came up with to continue His creation!

While scientists pride themselves on the basic “how’s” of the creation of life they can never fully answer the “why’s.”โ€‚Why does the tiny sperm swim up to the egg?โ€‚Why does it find the egg and push its way through?โ€‚Why do the cells begin to split? Whyโ€‚do the cells stopโ€‚making new features of whatever creature they are creating?โ€ƒ

My pondering led me to a different question aboutโ€‚this glorious, God-given miracle we call human life.โ€‚When doesโ€‚the mystery ofโ€‚consciousness begin?โ€‚Any small amount of research will unveil the biases of scientists working in this arena.โ€ƒThe idea of God’s creationโ€‚of consciousness is seenโ€‚as “makeโ€‚believe” (as written over and over by Dr. Ralphโ€‚Lewisโ€‚in his 5 part series in Psychology Today).โ€ƒYet, even after studyingโ€‚this topic for many years, evolutionary biologists and psychologistโ€‚can only make conjectures based on theories of animals that lived thousands ifโ€‚not millions of years ago.โ€‚Theyโ€‚reject theโ€‚one, most simple answer –โ€‚God’s miraculous workโ€‚in us.

I did find an article on when the journey to consciousness mayโ€‚begin inโ€‚babies.โ€‚Again, however, it is based on the ideaโ€‚of what scientists presume mustโ€‚be in place physically beforeโ€‚a human is deemed able to have consciousness.

But when does the magical journey of consciousness begin? Consciousness requires a sophisticated network of highly interconnected components, nerve cells. Its physical substrate, the thalamo-cortical complex that provides consciousness with its highly elaborate content, begins to be in place between the 24th and 28th week of gestation. Roughly two months later synchrony of the electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythm across both cortical hemispheres signals the onset of global neuronal integration. Thus, many of the circuit elements necessary for consciousness are in place by the third trimester.ย

Christof Koch, When Doesโ€‚Consciousness Ariseโ€‚in Human Babies? Scientific America

Friends, our glorious God, the creator of all things seen and UNSEENโ€‚has given humans the gift of consciousness.โ€‚That, in turn, gifts us with creativity, planning, memory, higher emotions,โ€‚and more.โ€‚Weโ€‚can no more truly guess whenโ€‚this gift has been delivered to us than we can know whenโ€‚our souls have entered into our cells.โ€ƒOf course,โ€‚manyโ€‚evolutionaryโ€‚biologistsโ€‚and atheists don’t believe we have souls either.โ€‚

If we look at life simplyโ€‚as a compilation of mechanical-like parts joined together (somehow for some reason) to create a two-legged creature that can speak, then we ignore all the beautiful intricacies of our human existence.โ€‚The nuances of love, of sadness, of joy, of peace, of fear, and of reverence.โ€‚

Our Christianโ€ƒfaith isโ€‚not ignorant of the “how” we are knitted together.โ€‚We canโ€‚accept all the biological facts of our human bodies.โ€‚We just have the key to whyโ€‚it all works.โ€‚A God to whom we give all glory for being the greatest scientist and creatorโ€‚for allโ€‚time.

All glory and honor and praiseโ€‚to God.โ€‚Amen.

The First 3,000

Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. Acts 2:41

My husband and I are back in the process of a church search.  For some of you, your church has been your lifelong home.  For others, you know all too well the difficult path of church searching.  We spent the last seven months trying out a church and realized it just wasnโ€™t the right fit.  Great preaching and friendly people but there were a number of pieces missing that we didnโ€™t see being resolved any time soon.  We left on friendly terms as we began our journey to the right home.

And this search led me to think about the first church.  That fateful day of Pentecost when 3,000 souls turned their hearts and lives over to Jesus when the Holy Spirit was delivered to Earth.  There couldโ€™ve been more.  Others stood in the temple that day and heard the sound of the violent wind.  They heard the Jews from every nation speaking to each other in their native tongues.  But they hardened their hearts.

Some however, made fun of them and said, โ€œThey have had too much wine.โ€  Acts 2:13

The 3,000, selected by God, were urged by Peter to recognize what had just occurred.  He quoted the prophet Joel in explaining how the Holy Spirit would be poured out just as it had happened.  He reminded the Jews of Davidโ€™s words when he spoke of Godโ€™s promise to fill them with the joy of Godโ€™s presence.  When Peter had his brief history lesson the 3,000 asked, โ€œBrothers, what shall we do?โ€

Peter replied, โ€œRepent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far offโ€”for all whom the Lord our God will call.โ€ Acts 2:38-39

He answered with the message of the Gospel.  And he went on to plead with them to abandon their corrupt generation.  Imagine.  3,000 people all at once starting on their new beginning.  It mustโ€™ve been glorious!

But their baptism wasnโ€™t the end of their stories.  What came next was an intense learning period.  They โ€œdevoted themselves to the apostlesโ€™ teaching and to fellowship.โ€ (v2:42).  They ate together, worshipped together, studied together, prayed without ceasing, worked together to help those in need.  And they multiplied.

You donโ€™t get the impression from reading about the first church in Acts that a bunch of individuals were saved then when to their own homes and began an intensive self-realization study.  Or went about their work day as though nothing spectacular just happened.  No, their common goal was to spread the news of Jesus Christ dying for our sins.  Remember, they spoke in many different languages.  So, they were preparing to go back home to make even more believers.  Preparing to go do difficult work.  That first church was all about discipleship.  I wonder how many of our churches can truly say the same?  I havenโ€™t been a member of one yet.  But itโ€™s what Iโ€™m looking for now.

The Spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions and the nearer we get to Him, the more intensely missionary we must become.

Henry Martyn

The act of baptism, confessing our faith in Jesus Christ and receiving the Holy Spirit, is typically a public affair.  Itโ€™s the starting point of our new beginning.  But after that one time event we call on the power and strength of the Holy Spirit to fill us continually for one mission โ€“ to be in service to God.  Those first 3,000 believers would need the Holy Spirit to continue on their mission.  They would most likely encounter adversity, opposition, violence, and yes, success.  Beautiful success.

We should all celebrate the day of Pentecost, which comes on the 7th Sunday or 50 days after Easter Sunday (June 5, 2022). For the Old Testament Jews, it represented the giving of the Law to Moses.  But the new covenant, for all the world to partake, saw Jesus enter our lives.  And after Jesusโ€™ foretold crucifixion He gave us the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.  On that day 1000s of years ago, yet another promise was fulfilled by God.  His Spirit came to live in all of us, permanently.  And we were commissioned into His service.

As my faith and biblical knowledge has matured, my list of โ€œmust havesโ€ for my new church has been honed.  I want a church that is biblically strong, always pointing me to Jesus, a joy-filled body of believers, and one whose primary goal is to create well-versed and confident disciples.  I hope you will pray for us in finding such a place.

The modern church itself needs a new beginning.  As individuals, may we be spurred to greater expectations of our Christian communities.  And may we seek out ways to draw each other together in unity as our forefathers in Christ did on that day of Pentecost.

Salvation

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

It seems thereโ€™s a lot of talk these days about โ€œend times.โ€  Since the world received the words of Christ about eternal salvation and His return, people of all centuries have determined โ€œthis is it.โ€  And although I do agree with Christian teacher Joyce Meyer that โ€œwe are closer to the return than we were yesterday,โ€ we can never know when that day  will actually arrive.   We can only prepare.

During the last year Iโ€™ve enjoyed digging deeper into what the gift of salvation really means for us and what it doesnโ€™t.  It isnโ€™t something we can earn but it is something we must take action on to receive.   It isnโ€™t something we can lose but it is something we are expected to behave like we have received.  It was given in blood by Jesus yet He gives us forgiveness and grace for having to shed it.

Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.  Isaiah 12:2

When we recount the scene of Jesusโ€™ crucifixion, we can easily imagine the dirt and grime and blood. The sweat and the tears.  The pain and sadness.  A perfect man, our God clothed in flesh without blemish torn apart by the sins of those past, present and future. And as God always likes to do, He suddenly flips the script.  At Jesusโ€™ last breath the veil between earth and heaven is torn wide open.  We who actively seek out the Lord and place Him as king of our lives now have an intercessor to present our dirty souls cleansed.  Not just our hands but our hearts will be spit shined for when we meet the King.   Sparkling creations meeting the glorious Creator.  Thank you, Jesus.

Contend for the Faith

Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.  Hebrews 10:33-35

Our country has become a virtual cafeteria of different religions, cults, and non-Christian world views that are all vying for supremacy on Americaโ€™s religious landscape.  Our country is also currently confronted by many tough domestic and global issues.  We need Christian wisdom and biblical discernment as never before.

Ron Rhodes, 5 Minute Apologetics for Today

That phone call that dreary night will never be forgotten, at least by me.  And I wasnโ€™t even the person in trouble.  I wasnโ€™t the one who desperately needed to hear the right words to save a life.  But I was in need of knowing the right words to say.  And because I didnโ€™t have the wisdom, the strength of faith I have now, I must take part of the blame for ending a life that night.

My friendโ€™s voice was filled with desperation.  She was pregnant.  She was also just 19, a college student far from home, a woman who was having an affair with a married man (who had also gotten another woman pregnant).  I had counseled her before, over and over, trying to get her to stop seeing this man.  He was slimy and untrustworthy.  But of course, he was oh so different with her โ€“ a genuine prince apparently.  And so, a life of unwanted, unprepared motherhood was staring at her in the face.  What would she tell her parents?  How could she show her face?  My immediate response? โ€œYou must get an abortion of course.โ€

This young woman who dreamed of being married one day and having many children was looking for a way to erase her mistakes.  To reboot her dream of becoming a nurse first then having a family.  And I helped her take what seemed to be the easy path.  We washed our hands of it all and moved forward with both our lives.  But I have never forgotten what I did.  And I doubt she has either.

I wasnโ€™t a Christian at the time but I was a member of the human race.  A person that valued fairness and justice.  A person who for the most part thought she was a โ€œgood person.โ€  I had no one in my life telling me different, showing me a different way.  It wasnโ€™t until I drew closer to Jesus that I realized how far from the truth I was really living.

The problem was I then swung too far in the other direction.  I took up the mantle of โ€œtruthโ€ and forgot about the Royal Commandment โ€“ to love one another.  And I think when we Christians get ourselves mired in political and social issues we can forget about that place of balance that God seeks for us.  We can forget about what we are really needing to accomplish in Godโ€™s name.

In the United States, the Republican/conservative/right leaning parties are automatically associated with Christians.  And yes, there are many of the same values involved.  But to assign our faith to one political partyโ€™s platform is a mistake in so many ways.  For one, it politicizes the message of Jesus. For another it assumes that all party stances are within the biblical realm.  It also assumes there arenโ€™t people in other parties that profess their Christian faith.

And so, when we come personally up against a faith/biblical/moral issue we may frequently pull back from our commission of helping others out of a sin-filled life because we donโ€™t want to be labeled a โ€œright winger,โ€ a โ€œbigot,โ€ a โ€œnut jobโ€ or any other derogatory statements.

To be fair, too many of our churches have either abdicated their responsibility to teach their flock about so many hot button issues such as homosexuality and abortion and how to respond correctly.  While others have so politicized their churches you canโ€™t tell the difference on a Sunday between a patriot rally and a sermon.

A new friend of mine told me how she was visiting various churches trying to find a new church home.  One visit took place on the 4th of July โ€“ the U.S. Day of Independence.  As she stood for the beginning worship, she noticed all the songs were patriotic ones.  And when the US flag was marched in by worshippers, she got up to leave.  At the door the pastor stopped her and asked why she was leaving.  Her response?  โ€œI came to worship God, not the United States.โ€  She loves her country but her love of God doesnโ€™t have anything to do with her country.

And so, like the women in my Bible study groups we ask questions that our churches fail to address or in the way they need to be addressed.  We feel safe to dig deep into what the Bible truly says about homosexuality, transgenderism, abortion, and more.  But we arenโ€™t theologians โ€“ thatโ€™s why we go to church.   To hear the Word of God taught to us in ways we can turn around and use them out in the world.  Itโ€™s sad, to be honest, to hear Christians desperate for knowledge and yet left unfed week after week.

One of the ladies in my study group recently had a profound breakthrough related to this topic.  She is very sweet and prides herself on creating good relationships.  But she realizes her desire to not โ€œrock any boatโ€ has also been an excuse for not speaking the truth + love when it is needed most.  โ€œIโ€™ve realized that in the past I had the excuse of being naรฏve as to the expectation of what God wants from me.  But I canโ€™t use that excuse anymore.  I know he wants me to contend for the faith.  I know what is truly at stake.  Iโ€™m now struggling to see what that looks like for me,โ€ she said.

Iโ€™m not going to take each major issue facing our world today because I am not a theologian with lots of important degrees to back up my words.  But I will direct you to the steps you might take to be better prepared when your friend tells you their daughter wants to start hormone treatments to become a man.   Or, when your co-worker tells you that having a nice house in a nice neighborhood is white privilege and you should be ashamed.  We also need to be prepared to step back and know when a political issue maybe doesnโ€™t have any biblical connection at all and just must be looked at from a โ€œgood citizenโ€ point of view.  Because yes, not everything we deal with is a faith hill to die on โ€“ but how we deal with those issues is.

Youโ€™ll remember at the beginning of this post I referenced the book 5 Minute Apologetics for Today.  It was written in 2010.  But youโ€™ll find most of the issues we face currently.  Itโ€™s a great, easy read for giving us biblical perspectives.  In addition, here are 4 steps that were recently explained in my current Bible study on Jude.

As background, Jude (Jesusโ€™ brother) was writing to a church that was infiltrated by false teachers.  Teachers who were leading lives and encouraging believers to give themselves over to sexual immorality and more.  Towards the end of his letter, before he tells the believers how to confront the false teachers, he gives them these four pieces of advice:

  1. Build up your knowledge and confidence in the Word.  Learn about and study the Bible, Godโ€™s character, His promises and the judgment to come.  Be immersed by also finding a good biblical teaching church โ€“ not one that just tells you some good stories each week.  Join Bible studies and do the work! Jude 20/Eph 2:19
  2. Pray not in the flesh but in the Spirit.  Go to the Holy Spirit and ask for help in what to pray.  By doing so youโ€™ll show God your dependence on Him.  Ask for help in knowing what issues you should be concerned about and which you should just leave alone. Jude 20/Rom 8:26-27
  3. Keep yourself in the love of God.  Fight to resist your own passions and doctrine that keeps you separated from God.  Lean into God for His promises and His direction. Jude 21/John 15:9
  4. Stay in the hope of the mercy that is waiting for you.  As Jackie Hill Perry says about this, โ€œWe have been saved from Godโ€™s wrath for God.โ€  The knowledge and hope of what is to come when Jesus returns should feel like a protection.   We have something better in store for us than manโ€™s approval.  We need to keep our sights on this so the persecution we might face doesnโ€™t silence us. Jude 21/Heb 11:25-26

On a final note, I want to encourage you to do a study on Revelation.  It helps to do it with others.  Donโ€™t just read Revelation.  Itโ€™s probably too confusing to be honest.  A good study with people you trust will reveal to you what so many of our churches seem to fail to remind us each and every week โ€“ that judgment is coming to all.  We have a greater commission than just being โ€œnice Christians.โ€  We are commissioned to help God save souls.  We might want to start in our own households.

Free At Last

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1

Thereโ€™s been a lot of talk (and screaming) about slavery the last few years.  Some people stating that relatives of people who were enslaved in the United States prior to 1862 โ€“ over 150 years ago โ€“ should receive financial contribution from people who have never owned a slave.  The details of this idea get quite complicated.  Which new government department will receive millions or billions of dollars in funding to manage this program?  How would it be proven someone was a relative of a slave? Would people whose relatives didnโ€™t live in the United States prior to 1862 be required to contribute?  I saw one estimate, based on a city governmentโ€™s financial proposal, that in the end the recipients would actually receive a paltry sum.

Is slavery bad?  Absolutely.  Does it go on still today in many forms? Yes.  As a Christian we should all know the dirty secret of slavery.  Our individual submission to sin causes the most destructive and widespread slavery of all โ€“ placing our souls in shackles.  In some cases, that sin leads to what we think of as โ€œtraditionalโ€ slavery โ€“ the illicit sex trade, illegal employment practices, and more.

Thereโ€™s really only one answer to eradicating slavery โ€“ Jesus.  So today I praise God that He and He alone offers us freedom.  The true freedom we all need.  Freedom from the slavery of sin.

For me, I still have to work daily with God on not willingly putting back on the shackles of fear and worry and doubt.  Of pride and selfishness.  Of allowing my flesh to rule my life. Giving in to those sins causes me to treat others in very non Jesus-like ways.  When I focus on myself, I take my eyes off serving others and helping them out of slavery.  When my feelings are hurt, I want to hurt others.  When Iโ€™m really worried or afraid I might pour myself another drink.

Each day I turn to God and commune with Him He gives me strength to shake off those shackles.  Each day when tempted to fall back into my sin I can proclaim with Him that I am free at last no matter my physical circumstance.  For some, an extra $100 or so either given out of their pocket or given to their pocket might feel like enough. But for me, no amount of money can ever replace God’s gift of freedom.

Retire Our Gavels

Therefore let us stop
passing judgment on one
another. Instead, make
up your mind not to put
any stumbling block or
obstacle in the way of
a brother or sister.
Romans 14:10

A prayer to not be judgemental of others

Holy God, we live in a world that judges us on a photo that gets scrolled by in an instant, our decision at the ballot box, the type of car we drive, or even the color of our skin.  I am guilty of making snap judgements about the people I encounter throughout my day.  But in your world, LORD, we are all equally loved.  I have discovered the uniqueness of your message through Jesus โ€“ that you are the father, king, counselor, protector of ALL people.  You are at work in all of our lives, believer and non-believer.  Through the life lessons of Jesus and the prompting of the Holy Spirit I will be the type of person who loves first, rather than judges first.  I want to be loved and accepted for who I am uniquely made to be and I will see others in that same light.  I pray this in your Sonโ€™s name, Amen

Recently, my BSGs were talking about why the worldโ€™s major religions continue to reject Jesus.  We had a great discussion about the belief systems of Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Jews.  It was great to see how knowledgeable the group was from either taking classes or reading up on the topic.  What stood out to me is how much more restrictive these other religions truly are and how much work they require of their followers to attain their end goal.  And when we start requiring people to work for their salvation it seems to inevitably lead to hierarchies or even caste-type systems.

You, then, why do you judge
your brother or sister? Or
why do you treat them with
contempt? For we will all
stand before Godโ€™s judgment
seat.
Galatians 6:10

Jesus swept this type of contempt away.  In one painful death, we are all promised salvation through belief in Him.  Thatโ€™s it.  No crazy ritual.  No particular way we dress.  No matter our family background.  No matter our wealth or lack thereof.  No matter our origin of birth.  No need to pray at certain times a day looking in a certain direction.  No flowers and incense placed for offering.  Just, โ€œI believe Jesus is God and my savior.โ€

What that one act does is it sets us all on even ground.  Because one day, the truth is, we will all die.  Our wealth, status, family tree, how many followers we have on Instagram will not matter one bit.  Therefore, to God, it doesnโ€™t matter right now.  He cares about one thing and one thing only โ€“ the salvation of our soul.

So why do we feel the need to judge differently?

โ€œStop judging by mere appearances,
but instead judge correctly.โ€
John 7:24

Jesus made this statement in defense of healing people on the Sabbath.  The crowd called him โ€œdemon-possessed.โ€ He stated that if a boy can be circumcised under the Law on the Sabbath why did they judge Him so harshly for healing a manโ€™s whole body on the Sabbath?  Jesus wasnโ€™t doing the things the way the crowd demanded they be done so therefore He was a borderline lunatic or heretic.

When I embarked on what I called my โ€œSparkly New Lifeโ€ a few years ago I realized my greatest issue at the time was my relentless judging of people based on โ€œThe Rules According to Kris.โ€  Itโ€™s easy to get angry and frustrated when people donโ€™t obey all your rules of life.  The statement, โ€œI hate people whoโ€ฆ.โ€ Or โ€œI hate it whenโ€ฆโ€ easily rolled off my tongue.

I have noticed this, that when a man is full of the Holy Ghost, he is the very last man to be complaining of other people.

The topic of judgement has really got us Christians into hot water over the years.  It seems our history of judging harshly while not loving others really turned people away.  And now, we have flipped to not using judgement at all.  All behavior seems to be accepted at a number of our large denominations.  As a regular ole Christian, the topic of judgement has been difficult to define.  I know Iโ€™m to love others but what does loving someone who is actively sinning against the Word look like?

James has two helpful hints on how to treat people:

  1. My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. 2:1
  2. My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins. 5:19-20

In other words, treat the rich man and the poor man with the same respect.  And when we see a fellow Christian on the wrong tract we are to, with the help of God, try and guide them back to the Word.

Notice there is a distinction between judging the behavior of our fellow Christians and those who donโ€™t know the Word.  Itโ€™s unkind and unhelpful to expect behaviors from people who either donโ€™t know what theyโ€™re doing is wrong or just donโ€™t believe in God and His consequences.  But no matter the situation we are to act like Jesus โ€“ with lovingkindness.  And for us non-perfect people, with the recognition that the log in our eye is our first priority.

I am so thankful for the grace that God affords me and the love He piles on me.  The days I leave the house looking like I should never have left my bed.  The days I canโ€™t find my smile.  For the days when my beat-up VW bug was my only transportation.  For the days when I couldnโ€™t afford the coolest jeans.  For the days when my child was screaming bloody murder in the store and I couldnโ€™t quiet her.  All of it โ€“ my good side and my not so great side that I present to the world โ€“ God loves me no matter what.  I want to be like that for others.  A person who sees what God sees in others.

If you want this too, add the prayer to your daily prayer list and watch and see how God works in your life!
