Knitted by God

I’ve been thinking alot about babies lately — not because I wantโ€‚another (I’mโ€‚way past that time!).โ€‚Yes, the talk of Jesus coming to earth as a baby has been in my mind’s forefront but alsoโ€‚my two-yearโ€‚old grandson and six-week old granddaughter hadโ€‚beenโ€‚staying with us for Christmas.โ€‚Having had two daughters of my own I still find myself fascinated with pregnancy, childbirth, and the ever-changing process of growing up.โ€‚

Even while I was pregnant yearsโ€‚ago, I thought the concept of having a human beingโ€‚inside me wasโ€‚very odd and alien-like.โ€‚The miracleโ€‚of life seemed just that, a miracle.โ€‚While tooโ€‚many people in ourโ€‚societiesโ€‚wantโ€‚toโ€‚pretend that a life growing inside a woman is not … a life, I remain in awe of how a tiny swimming seed can push its way into a tiny egg and an explosion of life begins.โ€‚What aโ€‚wondrous miracle God came up with to continue His creation!

While scientists pride themselves on the basic “how’s” of the creation of life they can never fully answer the “why’s.”โ€‚Why does the tiny sperm swim up to the egg?โ€‚Why does it find the egg and push its way through?โ€‚Why do the cells begin to split? Whyโ€‚do the cells stopโ€‚making new features of whatever creature they are creating?โ€ƒ

My pondering led me to a different question aboutโ€‚this glorious, God-given miracle we call human life.โ€‚When doesโ€‚the mystery ofโ€‚consciousness begin?โ€‚Any small amount of research will unveil the biases of scientists working in this arena.โ€ƒThe idea of God’s creationโ€‚of consciousness is seenโ€‚as “makeโ€‚believe” (as written over and over by Dr. Ralphโ€‚Lewisโ€‚in his 5 part series in Psychology Today).โ€ƒYet, even after studyingโ€‚this topic for many years, evolutionary biologists and psychologistโ€‚can only make conjectures based on theories of animals that lived thousands ifโ€‚not millions of years ago.โ€‚Theyโ€‚reject theโ€‚one, most simple answer –โ€‚God’s miraculous workโ€‚in us.

I did find an article on when the journey to consciousness mayโ€‚begin inโ€‚babies.โ€‚Again, however, it is based on the ideaโ€‚of what scientists presume mustโ€‚be in place physically beforeโ€‚a human is deemed able to have consciousness.

But when does the magical journey of consciousness begin? Consciousness requires a sophisticated network of highly interconnected components, nerve cells. Its physical substrate, the thalamo-cortical complex that provides consciousness with its highly elaborate content, begins to be in place between the 24th and 28th week of gestation. Roughly two months later synchrony of the electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythm across both cortical hemispheres signals the onset of global neuronal integration. Thus, many of the circuit elements necessary for consciousness are in place by the third trimester.ย

Christof Koch, When Doesโ€‚Consciousness Ariseโ€‚in Human Babies? Scientific America

Friends, our glorious God, the creator of all things seen and UNSEENโ€‚has given humans the gift of consciousness.โ€‚That, in turn, gifts us with creativity, planning, memory, higher emotions,โ€‚and more.โ€‚Weโ€‚can no more truly guess whenโ€‚this gift has been delivered to us than we can know whenโ€‚our souls have entered into our cells.โ€ƒOf course,โ€‚manyโ€‚evolutionaryโ€‚biologistsโ€‚and atheists don’t believe we have souls either.โ€‚

If we look at life simplyโ€‚as a compilation of mechanical-like parts joined together (somehow for some reason) to create a two-legged creature that can speak, then we ignore all the beautiful intricacies of our human existence.โ€‚The nuances of love, of sadness, of joy, of peace, of fear, and of reverence.โ€‚

Our Christianโ€ƒfaith isโ€‚not ignorant of the “how” we are knitted together.โ€‚We canโ€‚accept all the biological facts of our human bodies.โ€‚We just have the key to whyโ€‚it all works.โ€‚A God to whom we give all glory for being the greatest scientist and creatorโ€‚for allโ€‚time.

All glory and honor and praiseโ€‚to God.โ€‚Amen.

Power of Prayer

My friend Andrea’s last day of breast cancer treatment is today!โ€‚First, I want to shout out to God a hallelujah for bringing her successfully through to this point in her journey.โ€ƒFor the skill He gave the doctors and for the compassion He gifted to nurses that cared for her over this last year.โ€ƒ Secondly, to theโ€ƒHoly Spirit whoโ€‚hasโ€‚doneโ€‚aโ€‚mighty and glorious work in her.โ€ƒAโ€‚work that has become obviousโ€‚to others around her.โ€‚Soโ€‚many of herโ€‚prayersโ€‚were answeredโ€‚during this difficult time.โ€ƒ

Justโ€‚a couple weeks ago she received news that a fellow cancer patient would notโ€‚be completing this journey in the sameโ€‚way.โ€ƒThis acquaintanceโ€‚she connectedโ€‚with through Facebook, succumbed to this terrible disease.โ€‚Andrea then shared with her Christianโ€‚friends about herโ€‚”survivor guilt.”โ€ƒ

“Why were my prayersโ€‚answered butโ€‚not hers?” she asked.

Our verseโ€‚today is in reference toโ€‚the story ofโ€‚Abraham whoโ€‚wasโ€‚promised the gift of child at a very oldโ€‚age.โ€ƒ Because of Abraham’s faith, God credited him with righteousness, and aโ€‚child.โ€‚The waiting period for that child was 25 years.โ€ƒAlmost a lifetime in most of our views.โ€ƒA few times in between that promise and the fulfillmentโ€‚of it Abraham and Sarah triedโ€‚to take matters into their own hands causing a few problems.โ€‚They never lost faith,โ€‚they just thought they’d help God along.

We sit on the cusp of celebrating the birth ofโ€‚anotherโ€‚child.โ€ƒA few thousandโ€‚yearsโ€‚ago, two other peopleโ€ƒwere promised children.โ€ƒ Anotherโ€‚oldโ€‚man with an old wifeโ€‚and a young woman whoโ€‚was yet to finalize her marriage.โ€‚

Zechariah was afraid of the angel and a bit untrusting of this promise.โ€‚He asked for proof.โ€‚And proof he got — cursedโ€‚into silence until after his childโ€‚wasโ€‚born.โ€‚Asโ€‚forโ€‚Mary, she justโ€‚wantedโ€‚to know howโ€‚it was going to happen since she was a virgin.โ€ƒThe Holy Spirit explained the power of God and usedโ€‚Zechariah’sโ€‚elderly wife to show herโ€‚God could do all things.โ€ƒ Her words after? “I am the Lord’s servant.โ€‚May your word to meโ€‚be fulfilled.”โ€ƒIn other words, Mary prayed that God’s promise wouldโ€‚come to fruition.

Abraham, Zechariah and Mary all had their prayers answered.โ€‚While others, I’m sure did not.โ€ƒAbraham’s wife, Sarai,โ€‚and Zechariah’s wife,โ€‚Elizabeth, weren’tโ€‚the only old world women who prayedโ€‚forโ€‚children.โ€ƒThere were probably others whose prayers wereโ€‚answered while others’ wereโ€‚not.โ€‚Just like today.โ€‚While my friend Andrea’s prayer of the cancer treatments successfully killing the cancer in her were fulfilled other prayers along the way weren’t.โ€ƒ

Isn’t one of the great questions posedโ€‚by believers and unbelievers “why doesโ€‚Godโ€‚answer some prayers and not others?”โ€‚Even when the prayers seem to be good and selfless.โ€ƒSaints who lived close to God, like the disciples, have been tortured and killed.โ€‚Does that prove God doesn’t exist?โ€‚No, for one, it shows how evil’s reign is still holding on by the tip of its nails.โ€‚How so many people live sinful lives and hurt others.โ€‚It shows how this world is still brokenโ€‚and is not our final, perfect home.โ€ƒMost of all, it proves that we still are unable to see all of God’s glorious plan.

As if we said, โ€œIn my ignorance I have asked for A, B, and C. But donโ€™t give me them if you foresee that they would in reality be to me either snares or sorrows.โ€โ€ฆ If God had granted all the silly prayers Iโ€™ve made in my life, where should I be now?

ย C.S. Lewis,ย Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer

We may only know years and years after a prayer was answered or even unanswered as to why God acted in the way He did.โ€ƒAs Mary and Elizabeth did when they saw their sons become the announcer of the Messiah and the Messiah Himself some 30 years later.โ€‚Or we may realize in short time like a job we don’t receive and find out later the company was going bankrupt.โ€ƒIt’s always important to remember each time we pray we acknowledge God’s sovereignty over all.โ€‚We pray for His will be done.โ€‚

Friends, we shouldn’t feel guilty when we have been blessed with answered prayers.โ€‚He always wants us to use that gift of time, money, talent, healing, love, etc. to reflect His glory back to the world.โ€‚For blessings to multiply.โ€ƒAnd when our prayers seem to go unanswered it’s ok to bring your sadness or even confusion to the Lord.โ€‚He is our wonderful counselor.โ€‚Most of all, He wants your trust that He lives in the timeline of eternity.โ€‚One day, all His children will be healed, loved and satisfied.โ€ƒWe will bask in His everlasting glory.

Praise be to the God of all glory and honor and power who knows all and makes all things work for those who love Him.โ€‚Amen.

Knitted with God

Last month my husband and I were blessed to become grandparents of a beautiful baby girl. Born on my birthday, the Lord blessed me even more with giving me the gift of being with my daughter as she went into labor and then holding this precious baby just hours after she entered the world! With two daughters of our own I still find myself amazed by the gift of life — how God creates us, weaves us so intricately in a mother’s womb.

A couple of friends and I are doing an advent study and we were tasked during the first week to go back to the book of Genesis. On day 4, we read Genesis 3:14-24 and were asked to list the consequences of Adam, Eve’s and the serpent’s sins. We were also to identify God’s mercy in this passage. Awhile back I heard a lesson about this section of Genesis. On how God gave Adam and Eve both curses and blessings. When you view this text in this way you discover something different that the usual reading. Here’s what He said to Eve:

We all answered that God cursed her with painful childbirth and that her husband would be “the boss.” If we take this verse as a stand alone that’s what we get, done. However, in the context of the whole creation story, let me point out two blessings.

  1. The only way beings had been created until that time was by God’s miraculous actions. Breathing life into Adam and then taking a piece of Adam and creating Eve. Now Eve will be blessed with herself creating new life. She will be God’s vessel for all humanity. What an incredible gift!
  2. When God created Eve, she was a companion, a helper, so that Adam wouldn’t be alone. With God’s speech to Eve He has introduced love and desire. A marriage, rather than just a friendship. A lifelong covenant with another human being!

Without this curse/blessing for Eve we wouldn’t have the long line of woman who, even in their old and seemingly barren years, gave birth to the line of the future King. And then, of course we come to Mary, Jesus’ mother. Her womb holds the special place of Jesus’ first earthly home. With God’s DNA and that of Joseph and Mary’s woven together to create the God/Man. What a beautiful and glorious gift to all women-kind!

Although Mary was Jesus’ first earthly abode where God did His glorious weaving work, here’s the message I heard preached today: “The Holy Spirit, who lives in us, is leveraging the glory of God to weave our frayed hearts back together.”

Isn’t that a wonderful promise? A gift from Jesus as He left this earthly home to join His father in heaven, the Holy Spirit lives in all who say “I believe.” The glory of God is living in our wombs, in our hearts, in our very souls. Our pastor stated, “He takes the promise of peace and calms our hearts.” He is the God who never leaves us because He has brought His glory to dwell inside us! Oh mighty God, King of Kings and Lord of Lords thank you for this gift of life, this gift of your ever presence.

Thanks be to God for the blessings He bestowed on Eve that day. And may all Glory, Honor and Power be given to Him alone. Amen

His Mysterious Ways

โ€œJesus replied, โ€œYou do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.โ€โ€ John 13:7

In about ten weeks Iโ€™ll be a first time grandma.  And even though Iโ€™ve personally experienced the miracle of childbirth twice, I still find the whole thing a mystery.  When I look at an obviously pregnant woman it still fascinates me that thereโ€™s a living, breathing being inside that stomach.  It all seems so alien-like.

And thatโ€™s what my praise focuses on today โ€“ the amazing mysteries of God.  As we humans have moved along our timeline, โ€œscienceโ€ has become its own religion.  We must โ€œfollow the scienceโ€ and accept that โ€œscienceโ€ explains everything.  I can see why Jesus, in particular, loved children and child-like acceptance of God.  Because children keep asking the โ€œwhys.โ€  We can say we understand that a woman gets pregnant because a manโ€™s sperm meets a womanโ€™s egg.  But can we really explain why a woman releases an egg on such a regular basis? Why one group within a species only has eggs and the other has sperm?  And how a sperm knows the path to the egg and that it should break through the barrier to enter it?  And once it does, we know a process begins whereby DNA strands begin multiplying over and over creating that beautiful little baby.  But why?

We humans certainly love to fool ourselves into thinking we have a lot of control over what and how things happen on this planet.  We think we can control the climate.  Yet, the worldโ€™s climate has been changing back and forth since before humans were in abundance. Droughts, torrential rain, tornados, hurricanes, blizzards — none of these can be made or controlled by man. Of course, if we remove God from the equation then we think we can get to the root “cause” and fix or change everything.

The other day while I was out for a walk, I just started thanking and praising God for this amazingly biodiverse and mysterious world He plopped us to live in.  For the air that is just right from me to breathe freely.  For the food that literally just grows on trees.  For the process of rain and fresh water.  For the mystery of making a baby inside our bodies โ€“ how everything gets rearranged just right to accommodate the child, how we still donโ€™t know why our body says, โ€œitโ€™s time to be born.โ€

I know thereโ€™s a lot of smart people out there that can sound more โ€œscienceyโ€ than me when talking about how things work on this planet.  When I get into those conversations and keep asking, โ€œbut why?โ€ or โ€œbut how?โ€ the answers always find their end.  Science will never be able to answer the final โ€œwhy?โ€  As a Christian I know I can say, โ€œbecause God.โ€
