Day 17 Goodness of God

In one of my Bible study groups I asked what in our lives do we struggle to completely turn over to God.  Being all women, it wasnโ€™t surprising that most answered our children.  We worry, we fear, we hover, we protect.  We lay away at night thinking of their future.  We pray continuously for those who arenโ€™t yet saved.

For so many of us, however, that role becomes overwhelming and overbearing.  It puts our relationships with our children and maybe even our spouses in peril.  The solution?  To see God as not only our father but the good father who loves our children even more than we do, which seems impossible.  When I finally turned my adult children over to God, I first had to trust Him and know Him.  I had to realize how good He is and how much He loves me too.

Now imagine the parents of John the Baptist.  His father, Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied the enormous responsibility his just born son would be required to put on his shoulders.  Both his mother and father seemed to understand the weight of the role in announcing the coming Messiah.  A role I donโ€™t think most parents would want for their children.  A nice quiet life as a fisherman with a wife who bears him many children โ€“ yes, thatโ€™s what Elizabeth probably wanted for John.

But no.  John became a bit odd.  He wore strange clothes and ate bugs.  He spoke to anyone who would listen about the Messiah.  His message was sometimes confusing and almost heretical.  Yet we donโ€™t see in scripture his parents lamenting.  They probably did.  But I would surmise based on the prophecy and Elizabeth’s faithfulness that they lamented to God.

They lifted their son up to the God Most High for protection and direction.ย ย They trusted in His goodness.ย ย Iโ€™m sure if they were still alive when John sat in his final jail cell they wept.ย ย But they also knew their son had been faithful to God and the Messiah had been faithful to him.ย ย And as a parent, what more, truly should we ask.ย

Hope for All

In my Bible Study groupsโ€‚we have talkedโ€‚occasionally of the needโ€‚to be educatedโ€‚about majorโ€‚religionsโ€‚soโ€‚thatโ€‚in speakingโ€‚with folksโ€‚about Christโ€‚we know theirโ€‚general beliefsโ€‚and positions of faith.โ€ƒWhen obeying theโ€‚commandsโ€‚toโ€‚love our neighbors andโ€‚make disciples of all nations weโ€‚must be aware and sensitiveโ€‚toโ€‚the distinctions between Judaism, Islam and Hinduism, Buddhism andโ€‚Christianity.โ€‚We’ve talked about missionaryโ€‚failures when believers enter intoโ€‚cultures tooโ€‚aggressively and trample on the veryโ€‚people we are tasked to love

Unfortunately, this historyโ€‚has causedโ€‚manyโ€‚Christians toโ€‚beโ€‚overly cautious — thinking they shouldn’tโ€‚”push” their faithโ€‚on people.โ€ƒ The lackโ€‚of apologetics and addressing the differences in religions in churches only makes this situation worse. If we truly believe inโ€‚Jesus, if we seek toโ€‚obeyโ€‚Him and thereforeโ€‚are promised peaceโ€‚andโ€‚joy, thenโ€ƒweโ€‚mustโ€‚acceptโ€‚as truthโ€‚His directive.

It’sโ€‚not aboutโ€‚justโ€‚tryingโ€‚to get Jesus’ conversion numbers up for the nextโ€ƒquarterโ€‚so God will beโ€‚pleased. No, it’s about sharing the truth and glory of Jesus’ message to the world.โ€‚It’sโ€‚aboutโ€‚wanting so desperately for our friends,โ€‚neighbors, loved ones, and evenโ€‚strangersโ€‚toโ€ƒexperienceโ€ƒthe fullness ofโ€‚life forโ€‚all eternity.โ€‚It’s aboutโ€‚how weโ€‚viewโ€‚conflict and strife andโ€‚fearโ€‚– praying for, yes even ourโ€‚enemies, toโ€ƒcome liveโ€‚inโ€‚peace.

On this Christmasโ€‚Day, when we celebrate the most significant day inโ€‚the history of the earthโ€‚since it wasโ€‚created, we should re-commit ourselves toโ€‚this mission.โ€ƒWhy? Because today theโ€‚God ofโ€‚all monotheistic religions came down from the heavens and choose to live among us.โ€‚Not as a prophet, as theโ€‚Jews, Muslims and Hindus would believe.โ€‚As God.โ€‚That should be earthshakingโ€‚news.โ€‚Itโ€‚seems so un-god like which is why thoseโ€‚religions have a hard time believing it.โ€ƒBut God, over and over inโ€‚the Old Testament and Torah (which both the Jews and Muslims accept as Holy Scripture) shows Himself to be atypical of gods.โ€‚

He choose the least of us to lead thousands.โ€ƒThe sinner is the savior for an army.โ€‚A woman outsmarts a king to avoid genocide.โ€‚Aโ€‚farmer stands before a ruler issuing warnings.โ€‚Musicians defeat a powerful army.โ€‚A tiny nation is taken under His wings as loved.โ€‚A babyโ€‚isโ€‚crowned a Savior for allโ€‚people.

Today, a few thousand years ago, God came to tell us the best news we have ever needed.โ€‚We don’t need to keep striving.โ€‚We don’t need to giveโ€‚moreโ€‚moneyโ€ƒor kill a few doves orโ€ƒlambs.โ€‚We don’t even needโ€‚toโ€‚be a “goodโ€‚person.”โ€‚In fact, He came and pointed a fingerโ€‚at youโ€‚and said, “Sinner, I love you.”โ€ƒ All three other major religions — Judaism, Islam and Hinduism — require youโ€‚to just work harder.โ€‚Sacrifice more.โ€‚And hope that you’ve done enough on one column to make it intoโ€‚heaven (as weโ€‚lie aboutโ€‚what we put on the other column).โ€ƒTheir own scriptures tell them it’s impossibleโ€‚onโ€‚ourโ€‚own.โ€‚What a terribly hopeless way to live!

If we believe in God, noโ€‚matter the name we putโ€‚onโ€‚ourโ€‚faith, then how can we not believe He can do anything?โ€‚Includingโ€‚coming to earthโ€‚as both God and a human baby.โ€‚A baby, notโ€‚bornโ€‚of kings andโ€‚queens but of an everyโ€‚dayโ€‚woman.โ€‚Yet another worldly view that God shatters and turns upside down.

Myโ€‚friends, when we think of believers inโ€‚other religions we should find common ground first.โ€‚And then, we reveal the gloryโ€‚and hope of the Lord — through grace alone, throughโ€‚Jesus alone. No other religion offers true hope.โ€‚Their messiah is really themselves, as inโ€‚Buddhism.โ€‚The truthโ€‚ofโ€‚human history is that we cannot save ourselves.โ€‚It’s something we are miserable at accomplishing.โ€‚

Jesus is the only spokespersonโ€‚for the most beautiful message of God’s love.โ€‚He holds out His hand to everyโ€‚single person and says, “Youโ€‚can’t, but Iโ€‚can.”โ€ƒSoโ€‚again, today commitโ€‚or re-commitโ€‚yourself to His commands.โ€ƒPray for people who hate eachโ€‚other to turnโ€ƒto Jesus.โ€‚Prayโ€‚forโ€‚people who hate youโ€‚to accept His love.โ€‚Pray forโ€‚knowledge andโ€‚wisdom. Pray forโ€‚your neighbors whoโ€‚are devotedโ€‚to a religion that requires them to run daily on a never ending wheel to earn their way into heaven.โ€ƒAnd thank God that He came, revealing His light as a child bornโ€‚in Bethlehem.

Mayโ€‚all honor, glory and power be given to the One True King and Savior, Jesus Christ.โ€‚Amen

Savior King

Yesterday, in the Advent study I’m working through we were tasked with listing the names and characteristics of Jesus from various Old and New Testament scriptures.โ€‚The names included: child, son, Son of the Most High, Father, Counselor, God, Prince of Peace, Lord, King, Jesus and Messiah/Savior.โ€‚Attached to these names were adjectives such as wonderful, mighty, great, everlasting, zealous, wise, and upholder of justice and righteousness.

We were then asked to highlight the name and characteristic that we believe to be the most significant.โ€‚Which would you say?โ€‚It may depend on your current state of mind or the situation youโ€‚find yourself in.โ€‚But let me back up a bit and take us to the year 2019. There were just a few small things going on in the world that year.โ€‚A worldwide pandemic for one.โ€‚And the U.S. election for a new president.

What was your state of mind at the time?โ€‚Were you afraid for your health?โ€‚Worried about who would lead the world’s most influential country?โ€‚Concerned about the status of your job?โ€‚Upset about the situation with your children’s schools?โ€‚Angry about people wearing masks or not?โ€ƒAbandon by your church for shutting their doors? Distraught over a loved one’s death?โ€‚The year 2019 certainly held a lot of opportunity for all those emotions.โ€‚At theโ€‚time, the bigger question was: being honest, who did you cling to?โ€‚The TV newscasters?โ€‚Health officials?โ€‚Elected leaders? Family? Or God?

“When His glory is revealed.”โ€‚What does that mean for us in the here and now?โ€‚We suffer through leaders seeking their own glory through greed and immorality.โ€ƒWe hear false teachers leading Christians astray with destructive heresies (2 Peter 2:1).โ€ƒNeighbors and even family and friends follow their sensual desires and blaspheme the truth (2 Peter 2:2).โ€‚And we shouldn’t be surprised.โ€‚It is all written in God’s Holy Word.โ€ƒBut what is also written is that there will be a day of judgment.โ€‚

My friends, if we believe that Jesus is a real person who walked this earth as both God and man; if we see how the truth of the prophets in the Old Testament came to pass over and over; if we have experienced our glorious God working throughout our life, then we must place the banner of truth on the promise of times to come.โ€ƒ We must look different than the world.โ€‚Our choices both physically and emotionally must cause others to ask us questions.โ€‚”Why aren’t you worried?”

I’ll tell you honestly the Lord was doing a might work in me in 2019.โ€‚On one hand, I allowed myself to be carried away with all manner of worldly emotions.โ€‚On the other, I began clinging to God.โ€‚The battle of the heavens was revealed in little ‘ole me.โ€ƒ I know that God is winning and will be victorious.โ€‚Just the other day a good friend shared her husband’s observation of me.โ€‚He told her how much I’ve changed over the years.โ€‚I almost cried when she shared that he called me “gentler.”โ€‚And I raised my hand up giving God, the Victorious, all glory.

Jesus is all the names I listed during my study.โ€‚He has all the characteristics found in those scriptures.โ€‚Surely the name Savior should speak most to us especially during times of trouble and strife.โ€‚He came to save us from a terrible judgement.โ€‚He is the Savior King who will uphold all final justice and righteousness.โ€‚Knowing that this glorious and powerful God cares about those twoโ€‚things should bring us everlasting peace.โ€ƒ

The world is a mess, just like it was hundreds of thousands of years ago.โ€‚Just like it was when the Romans ruled throughout Israel, Judea, Samaria and the far reaches of Europe when the Jews sought an earthly king to save them.โ€ƒThe Word of God promises us it won’t get better until Jesus returns.โ€‚So, let’s put our hope and peace and love in His hands.โ€‚He is the only one who will lead us into victory.

Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever!โ€‚Amen

Not Me, Lord

Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: โ€œEvery Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.โ€ Exodus 1:22

Whenever I picture Moses, Charlton Heston comes to mind.  For those of you too young to know that reference, Mr. Heston personified Moses in the blockbuster 1956 movie The 10 Commandments.  He was sweaty and swarthy and muscular.  He was bold and without fear.  Some of his final scenes show him standing fiercely on top of a mountain, wind blowing his impressive white beard and long gorgeous hair as he calls on the name of God.  A hero.  A rescuer.  A man not to be trifled with because God was with him.  As usual, the big screen skips over a few of the finer points of history for the sake of the storyline.  Like the fact that Moses, even though God Himself had been his rescuer many times, really didnโ€™t want the job of Israelโ€™s savior.  Of being the leader of the new beginning for an entire people.

But Moses said to God, โ€œWho am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?โ€ Exodus 3:11

That interaction alone might lead the reader to think Moses well, heโ€™s just being humble.  But by my count Moses tries to turn God to someone much more suited, much more capable than him eight times!  I canโ€™t! What if!  Iโ€™m not!  Why should I?  Sound familiar to anyone out there?

Moses answered, โ€œWhat if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, โ€˜The Lord did not appear to youโ€™?โ€  Exodus 4:1

My BSGs (Bible Study Girls) and I have embarked on a new study by Shirley Giles Davis called, God. Gifts. You.  In our first week we were asked: โ€œWhere are you hearing God, but your excuse for delaying sounds a lot like โ€œLord, Iโ€™m afraid.โ€?โ€  Moses afraid?  Not that guy.  God saved him from death as a baby.  God placed him in the care of royalty.  God gave him incredible opportunities for gaining knowledge and physical strength.  He saved him from capture.  Thereโ€™s no way Moses was afraid of yet another challenging new beginning, right?

Eight times.  Standing in front of bush that was talking to him even!  I donโ€™t know about you but if I told my husband when he walked in the door from work that one of my bushes in the yard was on fire and speaking to me about going to the governorโ€™s office demanding, โ€œlet my people go!โ€ heโ€™d be very, very concerned.  In fact, this was a point of discussion with my BSGs.  Not burning bushes mind you but whether or not God still speaks audibly to us.  And if he does, do people think we are crazy?  Itโ€™s an unfortunate state we are in that some pastors and biblical teachers try to assure us that God doesnโ€™t speak out loud to us anymore.  We must discern His word in other ways.  And while I agree we need to use Godโ€™s character, gleaned from His written Word to verify the voice we hear I completely disagree that we no longer hear His audible voice.  I know.  Iโ€™ve heard Him.  Some of my BSGs have heard Him.  To me the real question is now that youโ€™ve heard Him, what are you going to do about it?  Are you going to accept the challenge of this new beginning or find another excuse?

Moses, although a pretty amazing and instrumental piece of Godโ€™s plan, stumbled even with Godโ€™s past provisions clearly given to him and the promise of Godโ€™s presence and help spoken to him.   Moses, sometimes called the โ€œLesser Jesus,โ€ is so often seen in parallel with the Messiah.  Their birth stories are almost identical with a king demanding their death.  Moses was to rescue people from slavery.  Jesus from the slavery of sin.  Moses led the Israelites through the parted waters toward the promised land.  Jesus is our living water giving us the promised land.  Moses was tested.  Jesus was tested.  So, whereโ€™s the problem with his hesitation?

But Moses said, โ€œPardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.โ€ Exodus 4:13

If you remember from Noah or even Abraham when called they went.  And in Isaiah 6:8 Isaiah raises his hand proudly and says, โ€œme Lord, send me!โ€  Itโ€™s hard for a lot of people, I believe to relate to those guys.  We regular folks sometimes are more like Moses.  We list our reasons Godโ€™s plan wonโ€™t work.  We arenโ€™t smart enough, strong enough, likeable enough, talented enough.  But like with Adam, if God wants us in His service He wonโ€™t let go.  He wants us to be part of a new beginning.  And so, he nudges us to the right people and places.  He puts other saints in front of us to help open doors.  For Moses?  He said, โ€œFine, Iโ€™ll give you Aaron to use as your spokesperson.โ€

But hereโ€™s the thing.  Even though Moses is the one remembered and exalted, it was Aaron that got to wear the priestly, holy robes.  It was Aaron that was allowed into the most holy place.  Think if Moses had responded like Isaiah โ€“ โ€œMe! Me! I can do it Lord because you have rescued me so many times!โ€  Moses wouldโ€™ve been allowed into the whole glory of God, the first priest of Israel.  True, his relationship with God was pretty amazing.  But God clearly wanted even more for him.

His new beginning, as Moses led the Israelites toward the promised land, would require him to call on the Lord for strength and rescue many times.  I find it interesting that Moses had to listen to all the people constantly complaining to him about why he took them down this path.  Do you think he occasionally thought, โ€œThat sounds a lot like I was with God.โ€?

Friend, whether itโ€™s a nudging or a clear directive from God I want to urge you to step up in faith and raise your hand.  To use all your resources (prayer, scripture, pastors, teachers) plus Godโ€™s past intervention in your life to discern what He is asking of you.  In your new beginning when you step out in faith you can then say โ€œI overcame my fears and allowed God to take my weakness and turn it into strength.โ€  This blog and podcast was my big step. Let Him work a New Beginning in you and He will let His glory shine brightly through you!

The Bible

He said to them, โ€œThis is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.โ€ Luke 24:44

As Iโ€™ve progressed in the study of the Bible, Iโ€™ve learned that the entire Bible teaches us about one subject โ€“ Jesus.  From beginning to end Jesus appears.  He is part of the creation team, the angel of the Lord speaking to Hagar, the prophecy of Isaiah, and so much more.  So, when Jesus, after His resurrection, reminds the disciples that His death fulfilled all that the Old Testament taught us we should be spurred to investigate further.

He told them, โ€œThis is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke 24:46-47

You can buy a Bible that only includes the New Testament.  But that would be like getting dropped into the middle of a battle not knowing why it started and which side you should be on!  And while there are so many great lessons and the message of salvation in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John the full weight of those gifts lies in the cornerstones set in Genesis, Exodus, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Isaiah and more.

It’s believed the first book of the Bible written was Job, around 2000 BC. After that the 10 Commandments and then the Book of the Law were placed in the Ark of the Covenant around 1000 BC.  The New Testament books were written about 50 AD.   Emperor Constantine commissioned the Codex Vaticanus, considered the original entire Bible, in 312 AD.  And in 1381, John Wycliffe defied church authority and began translating the Bible into English and distributing handwritten books to laypeople.  With the advent of the printing press in 1455, the Bible began its journey to being one of the most popular books ever printed.

Iโ€™m so thankful God took His Word and through man put it in this book we call the Bible.  With it we can learn about His character, His promises and fulfillment of them, His expectations, His plans for us.  My Bible sat for years gathering dust, not respecting its long history and those who died to make it accessible to all.  It seemed unwieldy and confusing.  Through the work of the Holy Spirit, teachers and the fellowship of Christians Iโ€™ve come to see the beautiful story, the amazing truth of Jesus, Son of God.  The Bible is a living document, one which grows with us as we dig deeper into our faith.

Today on this great day of Thanksgiving in the United States I want to spur you to open your Bible.  To read the history of our broken world.  To read the entire, true story of a God who loves us.  Of a God who never leaves us.  Of a God who promises to deliver us from our sins.  Of a God who sent His son to be sacrificed so that we will be brought home, cleaned and forgiven.

The Unexpected Warrior

When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, โ€œHe is out of his mind.โ€ Matthew 3:21

During my senior year of high school, I decided to try and live out my dream of becoming an astronaut.  I met with an Air Force recruiter and was excited to take off on this new adventure.  And then I told my parents.  It was my father that said to me, โ€œYou are a lot like your mom and your mom couldnโ€™t handle the military. She dropped out after about a week.  You two donโ€™t like to be told what to do.  So, itโ€™d be best to drop this idea.โ€

From the outside I exuded confidence.  But on the inside, I was terrified about what people thought about me. I always obeyed my parents out of fear of the repercussions.  And so, I gave up my dream.  I assumed everything my father said was correct.

Imagine if Jesus had so little courage.

His own family thought him a little wacky.  I mean if you announced to your family that you were the Messiahโ€ฆ. But unlike me, He knew where His identity resided โ€“ in God.

So often when we think about courage and courageous people we think of military and political warriors.  And while we can be eternally grateful for people that go off to war to fight for our freedoms and people like Martin Luther King who make big waves in Washington DC, if we stop there we might be inclined to not step up to the plate when itโ€™s our turn.

Jesus wasnโ€™t a military warrior.  He didnโ€™t fight to change laws.  He didnโ€™t work hard to get elected to lead a nation.  But what He did do, from the first day He declared Himself the Messiah, was choose to lay aside any and all standing with man to serve God.  He knew from that day it would be soon to die on the cross.

โ€œHis was the courage of the mind, the heroism of the heart.  It was a sober and reasoned thing.  He deliberately counted the cost and paid it.โ€

Charles Jefferson, The Character of Jesus

In other words, He knew without a doubt who He served and who had His back. Every single decision He made, the words He spoke were for the glory of God.  He knew people would hate him.  He knew people would misunderstand Him.  And He knew He still needed to speak.

In my BSGs study on Revelation we recently looked at chapter 11 in which two witnesses are assigned by God to give some final admonishment to the people.  A final plea to turn to God.  Throughout their 3 years on earth the world attempts to destroy these witnesses through any means possible โ€“ they are true โ€œwarriors for God.โ€  And until God said it was time to go, they were protected.  We were asked that week who are powerful witnesses in our present generation?  Who would you name?

Although I donโ€™t know him personally, I do believe one such powerful witness is of the famed Duck Dynasty clan, Phil Robertson.  This rough looking, old man has been much maligned by our media and culture.  But to hear his salvation story can only show Godโ€™s grace, mercy and forgiveness.

You see, Mr. Robertson was a child of the 60s.  When he went off to college in 1964, he had a wife and child at home.  The message proliferated at college was of the โ€œsex, drugs and rock n rollโ€ variety.  No rules, no obligations.  He took to that message like a duck to water and was frequently drunk, doing drugs, and cheating on his wife.  When he graduated and got a job this lifestyle continued.  He also felt his family was holding him down.  And so, they left him one day.  For two weeks he partied until the cows came home.  Then he realized he was miserable.  He had not only lost his job as a teacher but also a bar he owned.

He begged his wife to take him back.  She would, if he cleaned up his act.  God softened his heart and Mr. Robertson sought out a Christian mentor.  With the strength of God behind him he pulled himself from his old life and began a one reborn.

โ€œAnd so, I devoted my waking hours to studying the Bible.  I pored over the onion-skin pages and began to mark them up.  I consumed the Word of God as if it were food and drank deeply from its waters of wisdom.โ€

Phil Robertson, The Theft of Americaโ€™s Soul

When I read this, what came to mind were the Navy SEALs that train not far from my house.  To be a SEAL, an elite member of the US military, you need to eat, sleep and devote every waking minute to training.  Their goal is to be the best soldier possible.  But what about us average Christians?  What is our goal?  Will we be like Phil Robertson and wholly commit ourselves to the cause of God?

Fast forward in Mr. Robinsonโ€™s life and we land in the middle of the show Duck Dynasty.  It was a reality show following around his family โ€“ a family of backwoods hunters and fishermen from Louisiana who own a duck call business.   During this show the family became warriors for God.  While their producers would almost demand they do or say things outside the morals of their faith, they would stand strong.  They were willing to lose all the money offered them.  They prayed and spoke of their faith throughout the show.  And they garnered millions of fans.  And enemies.  They were called backward, stupid, far-right crazy, mostly because of their commitment to their faith.

โ€œItโ€™s been 43 years since my encounter with God and I can tell you, Iโ€™m not running from anyone or anything; Iโ€™m not enslaved to the โ€˜ismsโ€™ of the world.โ€

Phil Robertson, The Theft of Americaโ€™s Soul

We can make excuses for why we wonโ€™t stand our ground and stand up for God โ€“ I might lose my job, I might lose my friends/family, I might be called any manner of names.  Doesnโ€™t that all come from a fear of man rather than a trust in God?  Phil Robertson wasnโ€™t famous and then got a TV show.  He was a man making duck calls who became famous for being funny, principled, a family leader, and God-fearing.

Many of us probably arenโ€™t ready to be a full time warrior for God.  We must practice the first two steps so they become a natural part of us.  When we can naturally say a prayer for those who would hurt us, when we anticipate and readily step forward to fill a need that Jesus places before us, only then are we certainly more prepared for this step.

I follow a Christian pastor on Instagram.  He has a series of YouTube talks where he delves into our cultureโ€™s most pressing topics.  After reading how he lovingly and with wisdom responds to some of the vitriol he receives I realized, Iโ€™m not quite ready yet for the bigger battlefield.  I need to chew and gnaw some more on Godโ€™s Word.  God has been testing me along the way with mini quizzes.  Small opportunities to stand for Him.  My training to be a Warrior for God continues.

Step 3: The Confident Warrior

The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him. John 7:32

Christianity is not passive.  We are to pray, say and do.

Joyce Meyer

The other day my husband and I watched an episode of Phil and Jase Robertsonโ€™s Unashamed podcast.  We had selected this particular episode because it featured the guest, Dallas Jenkins.  Mr. Jenkins, as some of you may know, has fast become a โ€œnameโ€ in the Christian community as the director, creator and writer of the series, โ€œThe Chosen.โ€  This uniquely told story of Jesusโ€™ three impactful years on Earth is one not to be missed.  Jase Robertson asked him about the daunting task of showing both the human Jesus and Jesus the Deity.  On the human side, one episode shows Jesus tending to a cut on his wrist while also trying to start a fire using the โ€œhand drillโ€ method โ€“ painful to be sure.

โ€œThe criticism we get comes from Christians.  People come to the show from all types of Christianity including Mormons, Catholics, protestants.  And they watch the show and expect it to fit their view of Jesus.  They are like the modern day Pharisees,โ€ said Dallas Jenkins. He was then asked what negative feedback he gets from non-Christians.  His reply?  โ€œNone.โ€

And this got me thinking.  In all of Jesusโ€™ moments of conflict there rarely was a non-religious person at the forefront.  His battlefield, His warrior-moments, came most frequently against the religious leaders.  Those people who decided they knew what God had in mind for a Messiah.  And Jesus wasnโ€™t โ€œit.โ€

When placed faced to face with His opponent Jesus came prepared.  He came armed with the belt of truth and sword of the spirit.  He had to be prepared because the ultimate prize was not a piece of land.  The prize was not a place on an earthly throne.  No.  The ultimate prize was the heart, mind and soul of the average person.

โ€œJesus replied, โ€œYou are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.โ€ Matthew 22:29

And that statement, my friends, can only be seen as โ€œshots fired.โ€

The Bible says, โ€œfear notโ€ or โ€œbe not afraidโ€ 103 times in the King James Bible.  Jesus, himself, speaks some version of these words about 30 times.  And yet so many of us fear taking the step toward being a warrior like Him and for Him.

We say we arenโ€™t ready.  That might be true.  So, ask God to help you get ready.

We say we wonโ€™t know what to say.  Thatโ€™s probably true.  So, prepare and ask God to give you the words.

We say our church just doesn’t encourage that way of thinking. Maybe so. But Jesus didn’t come to start a denomination.

We say we might lose something in the battle.  You might.  But God always provides.

We say we will be seen as crazy, bigoted, unloving.  The devil does love to deceive.  So, we ask God to give us a loving heart and clear mind and we place our trust squarely on Him.

What does a warrior for God look like these days?  We joke about the person on the corner with the โ€œEnd is Nearโ€ sign.  But while on vacation in Kauai a few weeks ago I saw a man โ€“ he looked pretty normal actually, about in his 60s nicely dressed โ€“ standing in the same spot on a busy road a few days in a row holding up a sign for all to see: โ€œJesus is Near.โ€  Imagine what sort of feedback he mustโ€™ve received.  We honked each time and gave him a thumbs up.  He waved with a big smile.  And I thought, โ€œthat man was led to stand out on that street day after day waving at people holding that sign.  Thatโ€™s a warrior for God.โ€

You know who else are warriors like Jesus?  Moms and dads who go against the โ€œnormโ€ and tell their kids they must follow in Jesusโ€™ steps.  Employees who arenโ€™t afraid to talk about their faith while at work.  Friends who arenโ€™t worried about losing friendships because they wonโ€™t โ€œgo along to get along.โ€  People who are arenโ€™t afraid of being โ€œcancelledโ€ because they stood up for Christian morals and values.

Jesus didnโ€™t come to smooth things over with religious leaders.  He didnโ€™t come to make a lot of friends.  He didnโ€™t desire to win a popularity contest.  He came to save souls.  He knows the end of this worldโ€™s story.  And so do we.

โ€œTherefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. Matthew 24:42-44

Are you keeping watch over your house?  Are you dressed in your God-given battle gear, standing ready to step onto the field?  As Christians we are tasked with increasing Godโ€™s glory on this earth.  We are challenged to keep the thief out of our midst.  It is the heart and mind of a warrior, like Jesus, that will accomplish both.

Be A Heart Changer & Soul Saver

Life Lesson #9: Christians are in the job of changing hearts and saving souls.

Perhaps this is the reason he was
separated from you for a while,
so that you might have him back
forever, no longer as a slave but
more than a slave, a beloved
brotherโ€”especially to me but how
much more to you, both in the
flesh and in the Lord.
Philemon 1:15-16

When I was in college, I was approached by two missionaries on campus.  I believed in God, to an extent, but didnโ€™t know anything about Him or Jesus.   I asked the typical questions โ€“ โ€œWhy does God allow bad things to happen to peopleโ€ and โ€œWhy did He give us free will instead of just making us all good people?โ€ Iโ€™m sorry to say they couldnโ€™t give me even a best guess.  I wonder if you were tasked with talking to a friend about Jesus would you be ready with passable answers to these questions?

I heard a talk by Joyce Meyer the other day where she took up the question of why evil things continuously happen in the world.  Sheโ€™s seen some pretty bad situations in all of her world-wide missionary work.  She prayed this question one day.  The answer she got back was, โ€œIโ€™m waiting on my people to obey me and take care of each other.โ€

The righteous know the rights of
the poor; the wicked have no such
understanding.
Proverb 29:7

Iโ€™m currently doing a study that takes me through the entire Bible.  Itโ€™s fascinating to see in Leviticus how sin offerings are adjusted for the poor.  Even thousands of years ago God was making sure the downtrodden were taken care of.  But notice you wonโ€™t find in the Bible that the Israelites or Christians are told to take up arms to eliminate poverty.  Verse after verse we are tasked to do one thing with the poor โ€“ to help them.

In Joppa there was a disciple named
Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas);
she was always doing good and
helping the poor.
Acts 9:36

As social justice issues go, the poor are always on the lips of โ€œsocial justice warriors.โ€  Their desire appears to be to eliminate poverty and all social injustice via legislation, protests or even through violence.  But as Christians we are shown a different approach.  Take the issue of slavery, as discussed in the letter from Paul to Philemon.  The subject is the slave Onesimus.  Notice in the introductory verse that Paul does not chastise or demand of Philemon the release of his slave.  Paul, instead, appeals to faith principles.  He reminds Philemon that as a faithful follower of Jesus our hearts and therefore, our minds are changed.

โ€œTo me, a follower of Jesus means a friend of man.  A Christian is a philanthropist by profession, and generous by force of grace; wide as the reign of sorrow is the stretch of his love, and where he cannot help he pities still.โ€

Charles Spurgeon

By teaching slave owners about the power and love and salvation found in following Jesus, the disciples were slowly changing the hearts and then minds of people who, not only owned slaves, but behaved in any number of sinful ways.  The new Christian is tasked with living in a new loving and giving nature.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,
the new creation has come: The old
has gone, the new is here!
2 Corinthians 5:17

Had the disciples come into new cities preaching about abolishing slavery (letโ€™s remember too that slavery in that time was mostly more like indentured servitude) they certainly wouldโ€™ve been met with resistance.  Slaves were costly commodities โ€“ just as they were in the early years of the United States.  To preach that people had to give up much of their wealth in order to follow Jesus would not have been as successful as first telling of the Good News.

Last year, I watched as protests and violence broke out in cities across the United States by self-professed social justice warriors.  To be honest, at times I wasnโ€™t even sure what some of it was about.  In Portland, Oregon, the young people rioting just seemed to hate everyone.  It was a perfect time for the church to rise up and do what we should do best โ€“ show love and help change hearts.  I hoped and prayed that in communities hit by violence that Godโ€™s people would come together and form prayer chains around the cities โ€“ enveloping it in Godโ€™s love.  Instead, I watched as pastors led more protests and took to microphones and megaphones yelling about injustice, pointing fingers at different races.

“It is easier to make laws than to make Christians, but the business of the church is to produce Christians and everything else is a by-product of that new creation.”

Vance Havner

The people of Jesusโ€™ time expected a Messiah to come and bring justice.  They wanted punishment of those who had wronged them.  They wanted to see governments and whole groups of people destroyed.  But Jesus was not that kind of social justice warrior.  From town-to-town He cared about one thing โ€“ changing peopleโ€™s hearts.  He did out-of-the-box things like sit with sinners, touch the leper, heal on the Sabbath, talk with the outcasts.  He brought the bread of life and the refreshing water of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus answered, โ€œEveryone who drinks
this water will be thirsty again, but
whoever drinks the water I give them
will never thirst. Indeed, the water
I give them will become in them a
spring of water welling up to eternal
life.โ€
John 4:13-14

How amazing would it have been if, when our churches closed down in March 2020, they instead remained open.  Not just open but open 24 hours a day with a sign out on the street that said, “Need someone to talk to? We’re always open and ready to listen.”  I know this idea is radical.  And you’re probably thinking of all the reasons why your church can’t do this. But the work of Jesus and His apostles was radical.  So is the work of every Christian you probably admire.

โ€œBehave at them.โ€

Ken Blanchard

As Christians we are not tasked to be worldly โ€œsocial justice warriors.โ€ย ย We are commissioned to be Godโ€™s soldiers.ย ย When we are tempted to join a protest march and carry a sign we should first think how we can directly help those for whom we are marching. Godโ€™s plan for the world will only be accomplished through our active showing of love, grace, charity, and forgiveness of others — while espousing His truth.ย The spreading of the message of Jesus brings the changes we so long for โ€“ maybe just not as fast as we like.ย ย ย He designed us this way.ย ย

I do get outraged by many things going on in the world.ย ย And then I remember to pray to God for peace in my heart so that I can listen for my marching orders.ย ย When I feel overwhelmed by the problems we face, I remember that God works out-of-the-box in radical ways.ย ย Itโ€™s up to me and itโ€™s up to you to be in the heart changing business when God puts opportunities right in front of us.ย ย We will always find ourselves on the right side of “He who is most important” when we obey God.

The Apostle Paul worked on one rich, slave owner at a time.  And over time, our Christian faith has led to a world-wide abolishment of sanctioned slavery.  What small step can you do today to help change one heart?

Amazing Grace

At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.ย All those who heard him were astonished and asked, โ€œIsnโ€™t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name?ย And hasnโ€™t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?โ€ย Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.

Acts 9:20-22

Apart from the amazing miracles of the Messiah, these verses tell one of the most amazing stories in the Bible.

Saul of Tarsus was a wretched man. He was the LAST and I mean THE LAST person in Israel who wouldโ€™ve been saved. The disciples and all Christians feared Saul for he was responsible for murdering and slaughtering anyone who professed belief in Christ. He was infamous amongst the Christians โ€“ comparable to terrorists in ISIS today. Saul was the head honcho terrorist to the Christians.

And then he was saved.ย

Whenever I read about the conversion of Saul, I always like to immerse myself in what it truly wouldโ€™ve looked and felt like to see a man who I so deeply feared, now confessing Jesus as the Messiah. To say I would be amazed would be an understatement. I wouldnโ€™t believe my eyes, in fact, I could see myself rubbing them to make sure I was not dreaming โ€“ maybe even pinch myself. To the Christians AND the Jews living in Damascus, they couldnโ€™t believe their eyes either. How could this man go from murderer to disciple in a matter of days?ย

The answer? His amazing grace.ย

You see, it had to be Saul (Paul). There was no one else so broken, so poisoned by bitterness and revenge who wouldโ€™ve fallen to their knees any harder than Paul did. God chose the most feared man in Israel as His ambassador to show His people that EVEN Saul, the Christian Killer, could be saved by His amazing grace. Now the housewife, the common man, the prostitute, the tax collector could look upon themselves and consider what the Lord did with Paul and see that EVEN they could be saved by His grace. Again, it had to be Saul.ย

Saul the Persecutor

We may not all be murderers or terrorists, but I know many of us look upon ourselves with the same attitude as Paul did. โ€œI was the last person people wouldโ€™ve thought would be saved.โ€ Maybe you were an outsider in your family, a rebel amongst your friends, or even an enemy of Godโ€™s for a time being. The fact is He is still saving Pauls each and every day. He saves people like you and me for the great testimony we have to tell to those who do not believe. He uses the wretched to display his amazing grace. He uses the broken to shine His redeeming light through. Thatโ€™s pretty amazing.ย

Saul the Saved

Because of the sins Paul committed, he carried his salvation with great responsibility. He lived his life after Christ with a great thorn in his side โ€“ a thorn I believe (though many have their theories) symbolizes the guilt he feels for all those he was responsible for murdering. Because of this thorn, Paul lived his life like it was not his own. He lived his life for Christ because he knew that it was Christ alone that gave him a second chance at love, joy, peace โ€“ eternal life. The fact of the matter is, Jesus did the same for us. Our salvation, while maybe not as dramatic as Paulโ€™s, is the same as Paulโ€™s. We were wretched sinners, in need of a Savior and Jesus gave us that second chance. For that, I pray we all realize that our lives are not our own, but the one who reached down and pulled us out of the sinking sand that was engulfing us.ย

Go in that amazing truth today and pray that you find ways to continually lay your life at His feet, just as Paul did.ย
