His Last Amazing Words

If you were to Google โ€œJesusโ€™ last wordsโ€ what you would get is a long list of references to Jesusโ€™ last words on the cross and their meaning.  And while those last words are very important, if we think those were His actual last words recorded in the Bible we miss the amazing glory of who Jesus really is.

โ€œI, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.โ€The Spirit and the bride say, โ€œCome!โ€ And let the one who hears say, โ€œCome!โ€ Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.”

REvelation 22:16-17

Jesus wasnโ€™t just about the physical man here on earth.  He is so much more.  The book of Revelation, written by John, reveals Godโ€™s plans and purposes for His church.  Itโ€™s is the revelation of Jesus.  According to Dr. Merrill Tenney, Jesus is the chief subject of Revelations.  Christ is the exalted priest.  And three times in the last chapter of Revelations Jesus interrupts John with His words.

These last amazing words of Jesus in the Bible are also the last of my commentary on Living Amazed through Jesus.  And appropriately so.  Looking back over all the topics they can all coalesce into two words โ€“ follow Him.  We can thank God, Jesus and His Holy Spirit every single day that the prophesy of Jesusโ€™ return has yet to be fulfilled.  Why?  Because we still have a lot of His work to accomplished.  God is giving us an opportunity to not only get our own lives in line with Jesusโ€™ amazing ways but to also share with as many people as possible about the savior.

These last few words of Jesus should be at the front of every church.  Let anyone who is thirsty come and take the free gift of living water that only He can provide.  He has designed us to be His hands and feet to bring sinners into this amazing grace.

โ€œIndeed, when the church lives in expectancy of Christโ€™s return, such an attitude provokes ministry and evangelism as well as purity of heart.โ€

Warren Wiersbe

As I have grown in my faith, I find it odd that there are โ€œtraditionalโ€ churches and โ€œevangelicalโ€ churches.  Itโ€™s clear in Jesusโ€™ last (and many other teachings) Bible words we are all to take up the mantel of โ€œevangelical.โ€   I was discussing this topic in one of my Bible studies the other night about sharing the gospel with others.  One friend said she doesnโ€™t feel comfortable โ€œopening that doorโ€ with people.  I shared how I am praying every single day for just one believer to โ€œopen that doorโ€ to my eldest daughter.  I know God is asking me to be a good example for her but I also know He is seeking someone else to bring her to Christ.

Arenโ€™t there numerous people in your life that you hope would accept Jesus as their savior?  Itโ€™s hypocritical of us to pray for a miracle in someoneโ€™s life if we arenโ€™t willing to be that miracle.

Of all the amazing things Jesus said and did throughout the Bible He was always clear on our role in Godโ€™s Kingdom.  We are to help gather up as many as possible and place them solidly in His hands.  Our job has never been to sit nicely in church, enjoy a few songs and hear a good speech.  Itโ€™s to be compelled to share His amazing love with the world.

Thank you for joining Madison and me on this journey through Living Amazed.  Please join me starting December 7 for my next series, โ€œHold the Line: 25 Promises of God.โ€

Amazingly Grateful

Throughout this year the message I keep getting from every Christian source is to grow in my faith I need to learn about Godโ€™s character.  And to know Godโ€™s character we need to go to the one true source โ€“ His Holy Word.  The Bible is the most amazing reference book.  It changes every time you read it.  Iโ€™ve looked at the same passages at various times this year and discovered something new each time.  Even the simple verse, โ€œBe still and know that I am God,โ€ (Psalm 46:10) carries so much information.  Itโ€™s about trust, itโ€™s about slowing down, itโ€™s about getting quiet.  Itโ€™s also about placing God above all and realizing He is God and we are not.

When viewed not only in context but also within the historical perspective the meanings grow even more.  Today in the United States we celebrate Thanksgiving โ€“ a now much maligned holiday.  To some itโ€™s been twisted to represent the killing of native Americans.  To others itโ€™s about the first Europeans working with the natives to survive.  While others simply celebrate the opportunity to be with family.  Hereโ€™s a bit of this dayโ€™s true history:

โ€œThroughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflowerโ€™s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from an Abenaki Native American who greeted them in English.

Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants.

In November 1621, after the Pilgrimsโ€™ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colonyโ€™s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as Americanโ€™s โ€œfirst Thanksgivingโ€โ€”although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the timeโ€”the festival lasted for three days.โ€  — History Channel

You see, we can make up what we think the first Thanksgiving is about but when we truly are interested in finding out the facts and the historical perspective it takes on so much more meaning.  Taking a national day to โ€œGive Thanksโ€ didnโ€™t become official for many years later and it was more about just that โ€“ giving thanks for the blessings God has bestowed us.

I asked my friends and family to share verses from Godโ€™s Word that have special meanings for them on this day of Thanksgiving.  To show appreciation and to give thanks for all the blessings God has bestowed on us these thousands of years โ€“ written in His Holy Bible.  Take a moment to look each one up and see if you find something new that speaks to you! And feel free to add your own in the comments.

โ€œSurely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.โ€ Isaiah 12:2

I have had this written on my cupboard door since the beginning of my cancer trial this year.  To me says it all and I was cured!! Thanks be to God โ€“ Beverly

โ€œI have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

When the trials come, I know I can endure them because Jesus has already overcome the world. โ€“ Brennen

โ€œBe still and know I am God.โ€ Psalm 46:10.

Itโ€™s very intimate to me. โ€“ Janet

โ€œTo me this is like the days of Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. So now I have sworn not to be angry with you, never to rebuke you again.โ€ Isaiah 54:9

Gods covenant of love and peace with us! โ€“ Madison

โ€œPeace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.โ€ John 14:27

This is one of my favorite scriptures but a little ironic in a funny way because itโ€™s said during Catholic mass, followed by the priestโ€™s instruction to โ€œshow one another a sign of peace,โ€ or in other words, say hi to the person sitting next to you. This always caused me anxiety at church because Iโ€™m kind of an introvert, but once I just let the words flow over me, especially in times of stress in daily life, I can sink into the peace of Godโ€™s love which is His gift to every single one us. โ€“ Laurel

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; Do not be discouraged, For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

When I recite this, I am reminded that I am not alone and I can feel strength from God coming back into me! โ€“ Betsy

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Prov. 3:5-6

This is comforting to me. During my immature Christian days, I thought God expected me to solve my own problems. Thankfully, he does not expect me to do this alone! God designed me to depend on Him and wants me to pray to Him because he knows what is best and will gladly answer my prayers and guide my decisions. I trust God more than anyone else when I need direction and answers. He knows me way better than I know myself . . . . what a relief and comfort! โ€“ Anita

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

Itโ€™s a promise of hope and joy and peace not only to just survive but to thrive.ย ย God wants us to thrive and enjoy life. โ€“ Todd

“My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me.” John 10:27

Because Jesus knows me! Little ol’ me. He knows me by name and I am special to him. — Andrea

Our Amazing Influence

Simon the Sorcerer

Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorceryย in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,ย and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, โ€œThis man is rightly called the Great Power of God.โ€They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery.ย But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of Godย and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized,ย both men and women.ย Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, amazed by the great signs and miraclesย he saw.

Acts 8:9-13

Itโ€™s my guess that before many of us heard Jesusโ€™ words in Matthew 10:39,  โ€œWhoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find itโ€, we all thought we were some level of great.

Itโ€™s okay, you can admit it. I will too. Before knowing Jesus, our lives were centered around the greatness of self. Achieving selfish desires and seeking after things that would fulfill and establish a name for ourselves. I know before I knew Christ, I was on a slippery slope of idolization of self-value and worth โ€“ mainly in what others thought of me. I so desperately wanted to be like Simon. I wanted to be looked upon by those low and high with great respect, reverence and awe. I thought that if I could just attain a certain level of status with those I looked up to most, then certainly, I would be fulfilled.ย

As described in the text, Simon had great fame amongst the people of Samaria. Those who knew him even thought he was god-like. He had all eyes on him, all the time. He knew how to command a room and keep their attention with amazing and impressive acts of sorcery and magic. Surely, this was the peak of Simonโ€™s life. He had great influence over those who looked up to him. The people listened to him and were continuouslyย amazedย by him.ย

Are you looking for glitz to influence or God?

But one day, Simon found the attention of the people was no longer in the palm of his hands. Someone else was stealing the showโ€ฆ

Philip had stolen the attention of his audience with the truth of the gospel. Now all of a sudden, the people were more interested in hearing about Jesus, rather than seeing Simonโ€™s sorcery, and Simon was too.ย

Miraculously, Simon was also among the many who were touched by Philipโ€™s faithfulness to share the gospel everywhere he went. Simon became a follower of Philip and chose to no longer be a chief producer of propaganda for himself, but a disciple of Jesus, and one who laid down his โ€œgreatnessโ€ to serve the one and only Great God.ย ย

Many of us look at Simonโ€™s life before Christ and think, โ€œMan, he had it all.โ€ I mean, being a magician is no noble or holy position, but he had the love and respect of the people — two things every human being deeply long for more than anything else. The fact of the matter is, the influence Simon had on those people was superficial, surface level and would only last for a while until they found their next source of entertainment. His influence didnโ€™t have deep roots in their hearts, it wasnโ€™t truth-centered.ย

The same goes with the superficial influence many of us THINK will make a lasting impact on others. We want the status, the attention and the glamour, but in reality all of that, will amount to nothing.

True, deeply-rooted influence on others takes time. It takes a gospel-centered approach that puts the othersโ€™ hearts and souls first. It takes laboring in love, sacrificing time and resources and really listening to what the other person has to say. Simon may have captured the attention of the townspeople, but it didnโ€™t take much for someone like Philip, who brought both truth and love, to steal their attention.ย

Now, loving others and sharing the gospel is certainly no popularity contest. But, establishing effective and genuine and amazing influence is key to making strides for the Kingdom.ย

So, what kind of influence have you been attempting to have on others? Do you seek glitz and glamour like Simon? Or, have you sought genuine, amazing relationships that are truth-based like Philip?ย

Consider those around you who look up to you and think of how you can take one step towards influencing them towards Christ-centeredness today.ย

Amazing Presence

As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;ย but they were kept from recognizing him.

He asked them,ย โ€œWhat are you discussing together as you walk along?โ€

They stood still, their faces downcast.ย One of them, named Cleopas,ย asked him, โ€œAre you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?โ€

โ€œWhat things?โ€ย he asked.

โ€œAbout Jesus of Nazareth,โ€ย they replied. โ€œHe was a prophet,ย powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.ย The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him;ย but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.ย And what is more, it is the third dayย since all this took place.ย In addition, some of our women amazed us.ย They went to the tomb early this morningย but didnโ€™t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.ย Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.โ€

He said to them,ย โ€œHow foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!ย Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?โ€

Luke 24:16-26

Depending on how Messianic scholars classify the prophesies in the Old Testament about the coming of Jesus, you will find between 200 and more than 400 statements about the Son of God becoming a man to teach us and be our ultimate sacrifice.  Given that information, which was taught throughout the Jewish faith, you have to wonder why anyone at the time of Jesusโ€™ death didnโ€™t understand what was going on.  It shouldnโ€™t have been a surprise that He would also be resurrected.  Yet disciple after disciple, woman and man, we see either their disbelief or shocking amazement when Jesus stood with them after His death.

But we canโ€™t be too hard on those people of old.ย ย I mean we have 1,000s of years of Bible study, the hindsight of the entire New Testament, and more Bible scholars and preachers than we could ever count explaining the connections and the truths of this amazing story.ย ย And yet so many of us, even Christians, have a hard time truly accepting that Jesus is with us, even today.ย ย He stands in front of us with an open hand almost pleading with us to surrender and follow Him.ย ย He stands next to us, holding our hand, as we take scary, daring steps of faith.ย ย And He stands watch over us guiding and protecting us.ย ย When we fully accept that Jesus is our Lord and Savior, we can feel His constant, amazing presence.

I heard a sermon the other day by Joyce Meyer called, โ€œWhat is Faith?โ€  In it she encourages those whose families are grown and left the nest, who have lost spouses, who feel as though no one loves them, to grasp on to the knowledge that Jesus is ever-present in our lives.  He is with us when we go to the grocery store.  He is with us when we sit and watch a sunset.  He is with us when we lie down, alone, in our beds.

I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are oneโ€”ย I in them and you in meโ€”so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent meย and have loved themย even as you have loved me.

John 18:22-23

When we read the verses today in Luke 24, we might gloss over the fact that Jesus had already died.ย ย What happened on that road to Emmaus could have just as easily been written today.ย ย There was nothing special about the two men to which Jesus appeared.ย ย They are you and me.ย ย We can leave church or a Bible study waxing philosophical about the amazing presence of Jesus โ€œway back whenโ€ and completely miss that He is walking right there with us!ย ย

I once heard a woman in a Bible study say to the group, โ€œHow come God doesnโ€™t talk to us like He did in the Bible?โ€  I found it fascinating that this person has somehow missed the prolific authors who have received urgings and messages from the Holy Spirit.  She somehow has ignored all the testimonials she has heard in church from people who have been miraculously saved.  She somehow missed my own telling, to that very group, of my Jesus vision.

โ€œUnless you people see signs and wonders,โ€ Jesus told him, โ€œyou will never believe.โ€ย

John 4:48

Are you ignoring Jesusโ€™ amazing, constant presence?ย ย Has he walked along with you, sat at your dinner table and you didnโ€™t acknowledge it was Him?ย ย Are you looking for a burning bush outside your door to speak in a Charlton Heston-esque voice to make decisions for you?ย ย Iโ€™m not saying that wonโ€™t happen but Jesusโ€™ character is a lot more quiet and gentle.ย ย He wants you to have the โ€œah ha momentโ€ like the men in our story today.ย ย He leads you, tiny step by step to clearing the mud from your eyes and ears.ย ย And if you will only accept the burning bush as โ€œproofโ€ of His presence you will surely miss Him along the path.

His Amazing Word

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1

This week, on one of the Instagram accounts I follow, the site owner posed the question: What good thing happened to you this year?  She added, โ€œLetโ€™s spread some gratitude vibes.โ€  My answer? That my faith has gotten so much more in-depth and stronger.  Amazing, given whatโ€™s all happened in 2020.   I no longer have a home church.  In fact, I havenโ€™t been to church since the last weekend of February.  When I questioned my church closing indefinitely, I was met with some pretty nasty responses.  And when I asked to be removed from the rolls I received an email from the assistant pastor with a polite version of โ€œdonโ€™t let the door hit you on the way out.โ€

So, itโ€™s pretty amazing that without a body of faithful Christians to help in my growth that I am where I am today.ย ย

When I looked over this weekโ€™s post by Madison and myself, I realized that my growth was reflected in the lessons.  The acceptance of Godโ€™s amazing interruptions โ€“ knowing He works all things for my good.  The acknowledgement of His amazing authority over all situations โ€“ yes, even the ones that donโ€™t seem to make any sense.  The proof that He loves me by reading the Book of John.  And how much my picture of Jesus has changed these last few months โ€“ from a historical figure to a spirit that lives inside me.

My devotional this week had a day titled, โ€œWhat to do when trouble comes.โ€  Itโ€™s based on 1 Timothy 6:17 which states, โ€œFight the good fight of the faith.โ€  It went on to say that trouble is a part of life, so we simply have to be ready for it. (Joyce Meyer, New Day, New You).  A friend told me the other day she wishes she could just fast forward to 2022.  My response? โ€œWhy? There might be a nuclear fallout that year.  So, you might as well find joy in today.โ€

How do we, as Christians, get prepared?ย ย How do we build up our amazing faith muscle for that day when trouble comes, because it most certainly will?ย ย And looking at this weekโ€™s blog posts the answer is clear โ€“ steeping ourselves in Godโ€™s Holy Word.ย ย

I find myself extremely blessed to have started a small Bible study group โ€“ theyโ€™re my BSGs (Bible study girls) โ€“ back in January.ย ย I was encouraged by one of the members to re-start a study group.ย ย On an urging by the Holy Spirit, I invited two other women from my gym. They eagerly said yes.ย ย So, the four of us embarked on a journey we had no idea would be an anchor for us this year.ย ย We started out with easy faith muscles and moved up to weightier topics.ย ย These three women became my church.ย ย My amazing sisters in Christ.ย ย It wasnโ€™t just about having women that wanted to get together.ย ย Weโ€™ve put in the work.ย ย Weโ€™ve been diligent in our faith workouts.ย ย Weโ€™ve dug deep not only into His Word but into our own sins.

Iโ€™ve led other Bible studies before.ย ย Thereโ€™s always a few that blow off doing the homework and not take it seriously.ย ย Then thereโ€™s others that arenโ€™t willing to take the opportunity to open themselves up for conviction.ย ย If we truly want to know Godโ€™s character, not ours, and Godโ€™s will, not ours, we need to use His Divine Word as our touchstone.ย ย The world longs to cheat us out of the true, amazing, love God has for us.ย ย The world plays a shell game with morality.ย ย If we want to grab on to the more than 5,000 promises God makes in the Bible then we need to treat it seriously.

Did you need to re-read that last sentence? More than 5,000 promises.ย ย How many of them do you know?ย ย How many of them have you taken to heart?ย ย Those amazing promises are sitting right there in that book.ย ย

Jesus asked, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

Matthew 9:28

Letโ€™s be a church together and dive deep into those promises.ย ย Letโ€™s be a church together that accepts His interruptions with joy and peace.ย ย Letโ€™s be a church together that places His authority over everything in our lives.ย ย Letโ€™s be a church that needs no other proof of His love for us than our own existence.ย ย Letโ€™s be a church together that sees Jesus for who He is โ€“ our Lord and Savior who loves us and wants for us to live apart from what the world throws at us.ย ย Today we can open up His Word and find joy right there on its pages.

His Amazing Identity

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

Every year Jesusโ€™ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.ย When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.ย ย After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.ย When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.ย After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.ย Everyone who heard him was amazedย at his understanding and his answers.ย When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His motherย said to him, โ€œSon, why have you treated us like this? Your fatherย and I have been anxiously searching for you.โ€

โ€œWhy were you searching for me?โ€ย he asked.ย โ€œDidnโ€™t you know I had to be in my Fatherโ€™s house?โ€ But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

Luke 2:41-50

Who have you believed Jesus to be?ย

The world has so many depictions of what Jesus โ€œlooks like.โ€ White Jesus, Black Jesus, Buddha Jesus, Italian Jesus — it seems as though everyone has taken their idea of Jesus and made it reflect their own image. This practice is a dishonoring habit by churches everywhere who spend so much time painting Jesus to reflect their faces, instead of painting themselves to look more like Jesus.

No matter where you are at in your walk with Christ, I think itโ€™s safe to say weโ€™ve all had different perspectives of who Jesus is. For me, Iโ€™ve always thought of him as a Mediterranean- looking trim man with brown flowy locks. I can thank several movies and documentaries for that image. Iโ€™ve also thought of him as Godโ€™s Son who sits on a seat lower than God, answers to His requests and working as the hands and feet of Godโ€™s Kingdom — another misconception that again, devalues the full power and glory of Christ. Why? Because Jesus isnโ€™t less than God or inferior. Jesus is God as a part of the Trinity. Three-in-One, Father, Spirit, Son. Jesus sits at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19) and was present at creation (Genesis 1:26).ย

See, here in Luke 2, Jesusโ€™ parents knew he was a seed planted in Mary by God, but they still couldnโ€™t wrap their heads around what that really meant. When they lost Jesus in the crowds in Jerusalem, they searched tirelessly for Him everywhere but one place โ€“ the temple. If they truly understood who Jesus was, that wouldโ€™ve been the first place they looked. But to them, all they could see was their young son who was just a little boy. Where could he possibly have gone? Once found, they wereย amazedย at what they were seeing. That same little boy was teaching/preaching in the temple courts,ย communing with His Father.ย

Duh, where else would He be?ย

I challenge you to ask yourself this: What lies/misconceptions/myths are you believing about Jesus? And how are those misconceptions hindering you from being truly amazed by his power and presence in your life? Where are you looking for Jesus and missing Him, when in reality, you simply need to go to the Father to find Him?ย

The best way to find out who Jesus REALLY is, is to read through His words and interactions with others in the gospels. Study His character and you will discover Godโ€™s character. Study His love and you will understand Godโ€™s love. Study His kindness, grace and compassion and you will see what an amazingly kind and compassionate God we serve.ย

Knowing Jesus means knowing the Father โ€“ I encourage you to get to know Him today.ย

Amazing Proof

Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.ย When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

When Jesus saw their faith, he said,ย โ€œFriend, your sins are forgiven.โ€

The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, โ€œWho is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?โ€

Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked,ย โ€œWhy are you thinking these things in your hearts?ย Which is easier: to say, โ€˜Your sins are forgiven,โ€™ or to say, โ€˜Get up and walkโ€™?ย But I want you to know that the Son of Manย has authority on earth to forgive sins.โ€ย So he said to the paralyzed man,ย โ€œI tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.โ€ย Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.ย 26ย Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.ย They were filled with awe and said, โ€œWe have seen remarkable things today.โ€

Luke 5:18-26

โ€œFollow the science.โ€ย ย โ€œBelieve in science.โ€ย ย Sound familiar?ย ย And yet throughout this year โ€œscienceโ€ seems to not be the concrete โ€œsaviorโ€ so many want it to be.ย ย I once had a woman tell me she wears her mask to โ€œshow her love for meโ€ because science says itโ€™ll somehow save me that she is wearing a mask.ย ย While Iโ€™m not here to debate wearing or not wearing a mask I can tell you that her wearing a mask doesnโ€™t prove to me she loves me.ย ย Iโ€™m appreciative when someone doesnโ€™t sneeze or cough in my face but I donโ€™t consider that a proof of their love for me either โ€“ itโ€™s just courteous.

We are a people that love proof.ย ย So often the proof we desire is that which validates our own opinions โ€“ even in the face of completely opposite proof.ย ย My father is an atheist.ย ย While I donโ€™t expect everyone to suddenly be a Christian, the idea of not believing there is a Divine Entity that had its hand it creating us and the universe seems so, well, unscientific.ย ย But just like the pharisees and teachers of the law in the verses today, sometimes we just have a hard time believing even when something amazing is happening right in front of our face.ย ย ย They were so focused on their twisted version of the Law they couldnโ€™t even allow the people to glorify God when faced with miracles.

And then Jesus.ย ย Just the simple fact that the paralytic manโ€™s friends knew that if they could just get him close to Jesus, he would be healed was amazing.ย ย Where was their proof?ย ย To passersby watching them up on the roof trying to lower him down might have scoffed and thought they were crazy.ย ย But to the friends, they had only heard of Jesusโ€™ miracles and put their faith in the unknown.ย ย For the people inside the house watching Jesus heal the man they had all the proof they needed as to who He was.ย ย And yet their sticking point was Jesus forgiving the manโ€™s sins.ย ย The healing proof still wasnโ€™t enough for them.

I so frequently see things in nature, not just the amazing ecosystem God created for us humans to survive, but also the heart wrenching beauty and think, โ€œHow can anyone not believe there is a God?โ€  What more proof do they need?  Our bodies are fine tuned to this earth.  The circular systems of creating breathable air, water to drink, food to eat, and sunshine and darkness for our bodies to succeed are really all the proof we should need.

My husband and I got four baby chicks back in March.ย ย They are now big, beautiful ladies that lay eggs daily.ย ย I asked my husband the other day, โ€œIs there any other animal on this planet that works so hard to feed us humans?โ€ย ย The chicken, according to the Smithsonian, dates back between 7,000 to 10,000 years.ย ย Itโ€™s mentioned both in the Old and New Testaments.ย ย And if you look up a picture of the innards of a chicken youโ€™ll see it is quite simple.ย ย In fact, it seems its sole purpose it to lay eggs.ย ย ย Thereโ€™s really nothing fancy and yet they are amazingly fascinating.ย ย The process by which an egg ends up being an egg seems magical.ย ย And yet it happens every, single day.ย ย Each time I collect eggs I thank the ladies for their hard work.ย ย Because I know the next step for that egg will be something delicious โ€“ nourishment for my husband before he heads off to work, a small but important part in homemade cinnamon rolls, the key ingredient to a souffle.ย ย The chicken was made specifically to lay eggs โ€“ fertilized or not.ย ย And we were made to eat them.

And yet we still want proof.ย ย When I hear non-believers ask for proof I just smile.ย ย They are their own proof.ย ย Their amazingly complicated body system โ€“ the most complicated of all the animals on the planet โ€“ thatโ€™s their proof.ย ย Every breath we take, thatโ€™s our proof.ย ย And the fact that we are the only species to yearn for a purpose on this globe, to question why we are here, is even more proof.ย ย ย Sometimes the proof we seek is in the absence of something.ย ย For the pharisees, they wanted proof that Jesus could forgive sins.ย ย And yet they witnessed a God-given miracle right in front of their faces.ย ย

How much amazing proof are you overlooking every day?ย ย Every single minute of every single hour we take a breath, God proves His existence.ย ย The โ€œscienceโ€ surrounds us.ย ย It is us.ย ย We are His amazing proof.

The Amazing Sacrifice

โ€œTeacher,โ€ the man replied, โ€œIโ€™ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.โ€ Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. โ€œThere is still one thing you havenโ€™t done,โ€ he told him. โ€œGo and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.โ€ At this the manโ€™s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, โ€œHow hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!โ€ This amazed them. But Jesus said again, โ€œDear children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God. In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!โ€ The disciples were astounded. โ€œThen who in the world can be saved?โ€ they asked. Jesus looked at them intently and said, โ€œHumanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.โ€ Then Peter began to speak up. โ€œWeโ€™ve given up everything to follow you,โ€ he said. โ€œYes,โ€ Jesus replied, โ€œand I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News, will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and propertyโ€”along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life. But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then.โ€

Mark 10:29-31

There was one point in my life โ€“ actually a few weeks ago (I hate to admit) โ€“ where I would sit on my couch in utter angst and anxiety. No, not about important things, but about wall dรฉcor. Yup, you heard it. I would sit on my couch with anxiety about the lack of cute, trendy wall dรฉcor and decorations in my apartment. I was so anxious about what people would think of us when they came over, I was so anxious about having cute Fall dรฉcor before โ€œPumpkin Spice Seasonโ€ hit. What was I going to do? Hobby Lobby FOR SURE by now has already off-loaded all of their Fall dรฉcor for Christmas stuff โ€“ the best stuff has already been bought and picked through. What was I going to do? As my heart rate started to rise, I heard the Lord say to me โ€œDo you think I care about any of this?โ€ My anxious thoughts stopped. I listened and heard again โ€“ โ€œDo you think the things on your walls are treasures you will store in Heaven?โ€ Woah โ€“ I heard the message loud and clear.

I was toiling over useless, temporary, meaningless possessions INSTEAD of spending that time storing up REAL treasures in Heaven. I was convicted.

Now, Iโ€™m not saying decorating your house or shopping at Hobby Lobby is a sin. What I am saying is to consider the weight we put on those things. Iโ€™m asking us to consider if weโ€™ve made material things idols in our lives

Jesusโ€™ words in Mark 10:29-31 cut me deep to the core โ€“ I hope they do for you too. These verses stir me to ask myself, โ€œHow much of my life is spent toiling over temporary gains?โ€ Reading Jesusโ€™ words over again alleviate many of my silly โ€“ yet very real โ€“ anxieties about possessions and material things. We must remember that the Lord God does not look upon us and see the things weโ€™ve collected, the money weโ€™ve made or the beautiful house weโ€™ve decorated for Fall. No โ€“ He sees His son standing as an eternal sacrifice for our sins. He sees us as his prodigal children whom He loves.

This truth truly amazes me. As the world tells us that we need this, we need that โ€“ this will give you favor in the eyes of man and this will surely bring you pleasure and happiness โ€“ God says lay it all down. Give it all up. And for those of you that ask, โ€œDoes He really mean ALL of it?โ€ I would say โ€“ to some extent โ€“ yes. Our first fruits (earnings) should always go to the Lord, and as Jesus said in Luke 16:

โ€œOne who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.โ€

Luke 16:10

No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.โ€

Luke 16:13

If I am covetousness of what little I have โ€“ how much more will sin grow within my heart the more I gain? The Lord was speaking a very important truth to me that day. For material things are not of ANY value to Him. He wants my heart. He wants my attention. He wants my full dedication โ€“ things that cost nothing โ€“ but everything at the same time.

The disciples couldnโ€™t believe what Jesus was saying. For their entire lives they saw the Chief Priests and Kings lavished with riches and luxuries. To them, those were the people who were closest to God. They were experiencing a real-time paradigm shift. You mean to say that now the lame, the weak, the poor are the blessed? Not the rich and noble?  Pretty amazing stuff!

What Jesus was getting at here is that the more possessions one has, the more divided his heart becomes. The more his money has gone to things other than Kingdom purposes. He warned his disciples loud and clear that being rich was not the way into the Kingdom of God. No, it was intimacy with the Father, sacrifice and a dedication to seeing salvation sweep across the nations.

So โ€“ why are we so enthralled by things of this Earth? I urge you to spend time in prayer today asking God to reveal what youโ€™ve been idolizing recently. I pray that the next time you find yourself coveting someone elseโ€™s possessions, you direct your thoughts, your anxieties and worries to the amazing God-given things above โ€“ blessings that will reward you many treasures in Heaven.

Amazed By His Will

After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the manโ€™s ears. Then he spitย and touched the manโ€™s tongue.ย He looked up to heavenย and with a deep sighย said to him,ย โ€œEphphatha!โ€ย (which meansย โ€œBe opened!โ€).ย At this, the manโ€™s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.ย But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it.ย People were overwhelmed with amazement. โ€œHe has done everything well,โ€ they said. โ€œHe even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.โ€

Mark 7:33-37

I love this story. Not just because itโ€™s a bit humorous in nature, I mean cโ€™mon, Jesus didnโ€™t HAVE to spit and touch the manโ€™s tongue to heal him or shout to the heavens to cure his deafness. He could have healed the man with no words and no actions, with just one look. But Jesusโ€™ actions show that He truly knew the hearts of the people. He had seen over and over again just how feeble the people were in their faith. He knew they needed clear evidence that He was who He said He was.ย

Even more amazing than Jesus concealing his immediate power to tend to the hearts of the people is the immediate authority he has over disease. The verses claim that at the sound of His voice, deafness falls and lameness disappears.ย In the face of Jesus, darkness cowers in fear.

Theย lightย shinesย inย theย darkness,ย andย theย darknessย hasย notย overcomeย it.

John 1:5

Just as this verse reminds us of Jesusโ€™ power over the dominion of darkness, let it also be a reminder that what He speaks will be done. Even more amazing, everything on earth and in heaven bows to His authority, because he is the one who created it all (Gen. 1:1).ย

Jesus told the manโ€™s ears to open and they opened. Jesus told Peter that there would come a day when he would deny him three times โ€“ and that day came. What the Lord spoke in prophesies in the Old Testament came to pass through His Son on the cross.ย

We see over and over again thatย God is a faithful God, who fulfills his promises to His people. Are you trusting in that truth today?ย  Be amazed today that God will keep all of the below promises to you, for He is a man of His Word.

  • Amidst your worry, anxiety and fear, I will give you restโ€ฆ. (Matt. 11:28)
  • Through my Sonโ€™s wounds on the cross, your brokenness has been redeemed (1 Peter 2:24)
  • I promise that your trials will produce joy (James 1:2)
  • I give strength to the weary (Isaiah 40:29)ย
  • I give wisdom to all those who ask of it. I will provide you everything you need for the situations you are in. (James 1:5)
  • I promise, that if you resist the devil HE WILL FLEE. (James 4:7)ย

Rest in these truths today. I encourage you to find more on your own. Take time to remember all of the things that have come to pass, the promises that have been fulfilled and ask God today for the strength and faith to believe that what He says, will be done, today, tomorrow and the next.ย

His Amazing Peace

Overhearingย what they said, Jesus told him,ย โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid; just believe.โ€

He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.ย When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.ย He went in and said to them,ย โ€œWhy all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.โ€ย But they laughed at him.

After he put them all out, he took the childโ€™s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.ย He took her by the handย and said to her,ย โ€œTalitha koum!โ€ย (which meansย โ€œLittle girl, I say to you, get up!โ€).ย Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old).ย At this they were completely astonished.

Mark 5:36-42

Iโ€™m writing this post on the United Statesโ€™ election day.ย ย When you read it, youโ€™ll know much more about who may be the next U.S. president.ย ย ย Thereโ€™s a lot of anxiety and fear swirling around the world right now because of this election.ย ย Unfortunately, so much of it is based on misinformation or downright disinformation.ย ย And a lot of it is designed to create fear and distrust. Whatโ€™s so different for me this presidential election is the peace I have, which is solely due to my trust in God.ย ย I am not afraid; I just believe.

In Markโ€™s retelling of Jesus bringing this young girl back to life he starts out with her father, a leader in the synagogue, coming to a large gathering around Jesus.ย ย He urgently pleaded with Jesus to come and heal his sick daughter.ย ย He believed that just by touching his daughter, Jesus will heal her.ย ย As Jesus walks through the crowds towards the manโ€™s house a woman, who had been bleeding for 12 years, reached out and touched Jesusโ€™ clothes.ย ย She thought:

โ€œIf I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.โ€

Mark 5:27

Jesus knew at once that someone had put their faith in him.ย ย He turned to the crowd and asked, โ€œWho touched my clothes?โ€ (Mark 5:30) Of course, a lot of people had probably touched him because they were all crowding around Him.ย ย We so often want to be โ€œfansโ€ of Jesus, His groupies.ย ย But how often do we turn to Him in complete and total surrender and ask for His healing power, His peace?ย ย How often do we put limits on His ability to โ€œmake all things work together for our good?โ€ (Romans 8:28). In fact, the simple act of turning to the crowd, searching for the woman who touched Him, caused the disciples and friends of the girlโ€™s father to be almost annoyed.ย ย He was taking time away from what he โ€œshouldโ€ have been doing which was healing the girl.ย ย In other words, we think Jesus as all knowing, all powerful and yet in the same breath assume he canโ€™t do all things.ย ย

We should not be so astonished, so amazed that Jesus can, by just being, heal us.ย ย We should not be so astonished that He also chooses to take action in His time.ย ย If we believe and have faith in the truths of the Bible, we must expect that, if Jesus can raise a little girl from the dead, if he can raise Lazarus from being many days dead, then He can handle anything else this world throws at Him.

This knowledge and trust is what has brought me through, not only this election season, but through the unrest brought on by Covid19.ย ย Each time I try and take back my fears and worries I am reminded in my Bible studies and through my amazing Christian relationships that peace can only be fully achieved by placing those fears back in Godโ€™s hands.ย ย A good friend has been completely transformed this year through this same process.ย ย My BSGs (Bible Study Girls) were reflecting today about how few times this friend speaks of โ€œher anxiety” — which she used to wear like a favorite coat.ย ย Imagine that โ€“ with all the mess that is 2020 her anxiety has all but disappeared.ย ย Pretty amazing.ย ย Those trials and tribulations that James writes of have been hammered home this year.

โ€œConsider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.โ€

James 1:2-3

Have you taken these โ€œopportunitiesโ€ of trials to grow in your faith?ย ย To grow closer to God?ย ย To grasp the promise of Jesusโ€™s peace?ย ย Another of my BSGs, who in a difficult trial, begged for Godโ€™s help and felt that peace descend over her.ย ย She described it as a weighted blanket โ€“ warm and calming.ย ย Isnโ€™t that more of what we want rather than living in constant disarray, discombobulation and wailing?ย

So, as I wait for the results of this important election, I use each time my mind wants to lean into worry to instead lean into Jesusโ€™ words โ€“ โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid; just believe.โ€ย ย And His amazing peace never fails to come over me.

The Lord bless me and keep me; the Lord makes his face shine on me and is gracious to me; the Lord turns His face toward me and gives me PEACE.

Numbers 6:22-26
