The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.2 Peter 3:9
Itโs a strange conflict we humans live out โ we all know that everything will die but we live as though we will never die. As though the ones we love will never perish. As Christians, when we donโt acknowledge this full truth, we can trick ourselves into thinking we have time to finally obey God or to have that salvation talk with our son or daughter.
Having recently completed a study on Revelation itโs become clearer to me how I am living that half-truth. I have people in my life that I really want to be with in eternity. People that I love and donโt want them to be prey to Babylonโs vices.
Iโm praising God today for time and for our continuance of living in the age of Grace. I heard the evangelist Joyce Meyer say on a number of occasions that we donโt know when the events recorded in Revelation will take place but we are certainly one more day closer. And once those events unfold the Age of Grace will become the Age of Judgment.
The Spirit and the bride say, โCome!โ And let the one who hears say, โCome!โ Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.Revelation 22:17
The study of Revelation was difficult to hear at times. Until you get to the last couple of chapters. Then you see the overwhelming beauty of the new Eden unfold. And you canโt help but say โI want that. I want that for myself and the ones I love!โ You certainly donโt want what takes place in the previous chapters! Even in those chapters, fraught with despair and destruction however, God adds His Holy pauses. He gives us more chances to turn to him. He gives us more time, more grace. More than what any of us deserve.
Iโve read that God will only prolong our trials until we finally โget it.โ Until we finally just trust Him and obey. Itโs like He really doesnโt want to pull the final trigger. The door is ever so slowly closing while He beckons more of us in. But it is closing to be sure.
Until that door is closed and we are gathered up into the heavens, into the new Eden, I want to use this God-given time wisely. I want to take advantage of this Age of Grace and help squeeze the people I love through that door.
Day and night they never stop saying: โโHoly, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,โ who was, and is, and is to come.โ Revelation 4:8
I donโt know about you but as a โbaby Christianโ I would go entire days if not weeks without thinking about God. Without making any decision based on what God wanted of me. As my journey has progressed that โforgetting about Godโ can be counted in minutes and hours. And with that I have seen so many changes in my life.
The verse today takes place as the end times draw near. Creatures in heaven praising God โday and nightโ simply because of his everlasting holiness. As Iโve studied the Bible, Iโve seen so often how God wants a close relationship with us. Here in this verse the creatures never forget about God. But youโll notice that God is also a constant. He was and is and is to come.
Since the 1970s, one group or another has played โchicken littleโ screaming from the rooftops about the world ending due to either overpopulation, nuclear war, economic collapse, global warming, etc. At one point a politician even posted a countdown to Earthโs destruction — which ran out about 8 years ago. And according to a current politician we have about 10 years left before the Earth implodes apparently.
But hereโs the thing, when you study the Book of Revelation itโs not the Earth or God that is destroyed, itโs sin. God is the Alpha and Omega. He created the beginning and will be with us throughout eternity.
Today I praise the everlasting God. We cannot destroy God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit. We can only, through our sin-filled, unrepentant lives destroy ourselves. My earthly goal is to serve God as best I can with Jesus as my guidebook and the Holy Spirit as my tour guide. That way I can join with the creatures in heaven continuously praising His name.
"Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7
“I believe Jesus died to deliver ourselves from ourselves. How many of us are just fed up being ourselves all the time?”
Joyce Meyer
The darkness, fury and despair of the young woman sitting next to me grew with each passing minute. We were so close I could feel her shoulder touching mine. Sitting on the airplane we found ourselves in that strange world of invading each otherโs personal space while pretending neither existed. Her billowing cloud seem to want to seep over the dividing line of the armrest to pull me in.
This seemingly quiet, unassuming young woman opened her computer and began pounding on her keyboard like the devil itself was trying to escape her fingertips. My eyes drifted to her brightly lit screen. I couldnโt help but notice the many words in all caps. And I was drawn to know what was causing her so much angst. It appeared she was writing a complaint letter about a work environment. As her fingers marched like Roman soldiers across the keyboard, pounding and erasing and pounding some more I couldnโt seem to tear my eyes away from the battle. She was hurt and outraged. She felt betrayed and abused. Her past hurts served as the basis of why her employer shouldโve known better. And then those pounding fingers suddenly slammed the lid of the smoking computer closed. Her fury still burned. You could almost see the sparks coming from her.
Over the course of three and half hours I watched this woman join the battle numerous times, editing, adding and pounding. And then she started in on an email to her family. I kept praying that she, once there was internet service, would have a change of heart and not send off the bombs she composed. But alas, before deplaning, she picked up her phone and started, with the same fervor, sending off salvos via text messages. I have never seen a personโs finger move with such speed and aggressiveness. Like driving pass a car accident I couldnโt seem to look away.
Iโve come to realize that God puts me in all types of situations to test and teach me. I was learning a valuable lesson. You see, my tendency to get outrage over โunfairโ situations is something Iโve battled with forever. As I watched this young woman blow up at probably everyone in her life, I realized how much I need God to lead me out of my sin. How much I need God to provide me with a different perspective. How much I need to rely on God for peace. What I wanted to do was turn to her and ask if she knew about Jesus. I wanted to wrap Jesusโ love around her. To somehow snap her mind off her problems and look up to God. I could turn and look at this woman and see my own face looking back at me. And I didnโt want to be โthat girl.โ
In 2019 there were more than 18 million self-help type books sold in the United States. The number of unique titles rose nearly three-fold from 30,897 in 2013 to 85,253 in 2019. Thatโs a lot of people trying to fix themselves! Isnโt that, so often, what we turn to our friends, co-workers and professionals for โ advice on fixing our problems?
Arenโt we exhausted yet trying to fix ourselves? As the world drifts farther from God it shouldnโt be surprising that so many people are working so hard to fix their own problems. Jesus came to save our souls but I believe He also came to save us from ourselves.
“The only way we are ever ready for a change in our life is when we are tired of โme.โ When we say we cannot continue to do the work of trying to make ourself happy. We are fed up.”
Joyce Meyer
When we stop striving, stop trying to control what other people think of us, stop trying to please everyone, stop shaming ourselves for our past, stop playing victim, and start putting God as our King, our Creator, our Lord we can release the yoke of our fleshly life.
"Then Jesus declared, โI am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:35
And follow Him. Retire from our self-care routines. Self-care as in trying to fix ourselves. Certainly we take care of ourselves, our minds and bodies. But God always calls us to take a new perspective in every aspect of our lives. When we take time to mediate, what do we mediate on? When we decide what best to eat or how to stay in shape, who do we do it for? Why do we word vomit all over our family or friends trying to get them to see โour side?โ For ourselves? Or for our Heavenly Father?
I’ve heard the evangelist teacher Joyce Meyer make this statement many times: “I was always on my mind. I was so selfish.” To change that she created these three steps:
Live to please God, not yourself. You are making a Kingdom investment. And you will always get a great return on your investment.
Refuse to have โmeโ on my mind all the time. Iโm not thinking about whatโs wrong with me all the time or how I can get people to do things for me.
Always use money and things to bless people. Donโt use people to get money and things.
Jesus frequently took the focus off Himself and placed it on God. He prayed for help in times of pain and trouble. He told the disciples to look to the Father. He guided new believers to putting away their shame and accepting forgiveness from God. The times He had to solidify His place as the Savior He seemed almost reluctant. The focus for Jesus the man was always God and how to best please Him.
In my study on Revelation, I was asked the question, โHow does the fact that Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords affect our everyday choices and decisions?โ In other words, getting ourselves, off our own minds and onto the Creator. Iโm finally leaning more on Him as my wise counselor. He is my exercise coach, my nutritional advisor, my mental wellness guru. When I see my mind and body as belonging to Him, I realize the responsibility I have to keeping myself focused on what He wants for me. I fail frequently. And when I do I come to Him seeking and receiving forgiveness.
I encountered the young, angry, hurt woman at the end of my trip. Before it had even started however, I failed to grab on to Godโs promised peace by my favorite method of failure –outrage. The TSA officer and I had a bit of a confrontation. I blustered and was rude. As I walked away, I realized I was wearing my silver cross around my neck. I may have flushed in embarrassment. I failed to show grace and patience and forgiveness. I took the situation personally. It was all about โme.โ
The difference for me at that moment was instead of adding it to my Vault of Shame I lifted it up to God. I had a counseling moment with Him. I felt His disappointment and His love. It set me on course to be more aware of my behavior choices while in the crowded airport.
“We are in the middle between hating sin and sinning. When we arenโt accustomed to making good choices itโs hard. The devil is working against us. The more often we make those good choices it becomes easier.”
Joyce Meyer
And so, on my return flight, as I sat next to the woman with fire bursting from her fingertips, and like lava flowing out on her family, friends, co-workers burning bridges left and right I wanted to be like Jesus. To be able to look her in the eye and know her hurts, her overwhelming pain and say, โfollow me.โ
And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. 2 Cor 5:15
It wasnโt a counseling moment for her. Although I prayed for her. It was a reminder message to me. To live for Jesus. To place my thoughts on Jesus. To release my pain and hurts to Him. To stop trying to defend and take care of myself. To trust that He wants the best for me and will guide me to whatever that looks like. To take my mind off me and have the mind of Christ.
When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, โHe is out of his mind.โ Matthew 3:21
During my senior year of high school, I decided to try and live out my dream of becoming an astronaut. I met with an Air Force recruiter and was excited to take off on this new adventure. And then I told my parents. It was my father that said to me, โYou are a lot like your mom and your mom couldnโt handle the military. She dropped out after about a week. You two donโt like to be told what to do. So, itโd be best to drop this idea.โ
From the outside I exuded confidence. But on the inside, I was terrified about what people thought about me. I always obeyed my parents out of fear of the repercussions. And so, I gave up my dream. I assumed everything my father said was correct.
Imagine if Jesus had so little courage.
His own family thought him a little wacky. I mean if you announced to your family that you were the Messiahโฆ. But unlike me, He knew where His identity resided โ in God.
So often when we think about courage and courageous people we think of military and political warriors. And while we can be eternally grateful for people that go off to war to fight for our freedoms and people like Martin Luther King who make big waves in Washington DC, if we stop there we might be inclined to not step up to the plate when itโs our turn.
Jesus wasnโt a military warrior. He didnโt fight to change laws. He didnโt work hard to get elected to lead a nation. But what He did do, from the first day He declared Himself the Messiah, was choose to lay aside any and all standing with man to serve God. He knew from that day it would be soon to die on the cross.
โHis was the courage of the mind, the heroism of the heart. It was a sober and reasoned thing. He deliberately counted the cost and paid it.โ
Charles Jefferson, The Character of Jesus
In other words, He knew without a doubt who He served and who had His back. Every single decision He made, the words He spoke were for the glory of God. He knew people would hate him. He knew people would misunderstand Him. And He knew He still needed to speak.
In my BSGs study on Revelation we recently looked at chapter 11 in which two witnesses are assigned by God to give some final admonishment to the people. A final plea to turn to God. Throughout their 3 years on earth the world attempts to destroy these witnesses through any means possible โ they are true โwarriors for God.โ And until God said it was time to go, they were protected. We were asked that week who are powerful witnesses in our present generation? Who would you name?
Although I donโt know him personally, I do believe one such powerful witness is of the famed Duck Dynasty clan, Phil Robertson. This rough looking, old man has been much maligned by our media and culture. But to hear his salvation story can only show Godโs grace, mercy and forgiveness.
You see, Mr. Robertson was a child of the 60s. When he went off to college in 1964, he had a wife and child at home. The message proliferated at college was of the โsex, drugs and rock n rollโ variety. No rules, no obligations. He took to that message like a duck to water and was frequently drunk, doing drugs, and cheating on his wife. When he graduated and got a job this lifestyle continued. He also felt his family was holding him down. And so, they left him one day. For two weeks he partied until the cows came home. Then he realized he was miserable. He had not only lost his job as a teacher but also a bar he owned.
He begged his wife to take him back. She would, if he cleaned up his act. God softened his heart and Mr. Robertson sought out a Christian mentor. With the strength of God behind him he pulled himself from his old life and began a one reborn.
โAnd so, I devoted my waking hours to studying the Bible. I pored over the onion-skin pages and began to mark them up. I consumed the Word of God as if it were food and drank deeply from its waters of wisdom.โ
Phil Robertson, The Theft of Americaโs Soul
When I read this, what came to mind were the Navy SEALs that train not far from my house. To be a SEAL, an elite member of the US military, you need to eat, sleep and devote every waking minute to training. Their goal is to be the best soldier possible. But what about us average Christians? What is our goal? Will we be like Phil Robertson and wholly commit ourselves to the cause of God?
Fast forward in Mr. Robinsonโs life and we land in the middle of the show Duck Dynasty. It was a reality show following around his family โ a family of backwoods hunters and fishermen from Louisiana who own a duck call business. During this show the family became warriors for God. While their producers would almost demand they do or say things outside the morals of their faith, they would stand strong. They were willing to lose all the money offered them. They prayed and spoke of their faith throughout the show. And they garnered millions of fans. And enemies. They were called backward, stupid, far-right crazy, mostly because of their commitment to their faith.
โItโs been 43 years since my encounter with God and I can tell you, Iโm not running from anyone or anything; Iโm not enslaved to the โismsโ of the world.โ
Phil Robertson, The Theft of Americaโs Soul
We can make excuses for why we wonโt stand our ground and stand up for God โ I might lose my job, I might lose my friends/family, I might be called any manner of names. Doesnโt that all come from a fear of man rather than a trust in God? Phil Robertson wasnโt famous and then got a TV show. He was a man making duck calls who became famous for being funny, principled, a family leader, and God-fearing.
Many of us probably arenโt ready to be a full time warrior for God. We must practice the first two steps so they become a natural part of us. When we can naturally say a prayer for those who would hurt us, when we anticipate and readily step forward to fill a need that Jesus places before us, only then are we certainly more prepared for this step.
I follow a Christian pastor on Instagram. He has a series of YouTube talks where he delves into our cultureโs most pressing topics. After reading how he lovingly and with wisdom responds to some of the vitriol he receives I realized, Iโm not quite ready yet for the bigger battlefield. I need to chew and gnaw some more on Godโs Word. God has been testing me along the way with mini quizzes. Small opportunities to stand for Him. My training to be a Warrior for God continues.
The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him. John 7:32
Christianity is not passive. We are to pray, say and do.
Joyce Meyer
The other day my husband and I watched an episode of Phil and Jase Robertsonโs Unashamed podcast. We had selected this particular episode because it featured the guest, Dallas Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins, as some of you may know, has fast become a โnameโ in the Christian community as the director, creator and writer of the series, โThe Chosen.โ This uniquely told story of Jesusโ three impactful years on Earth is one not to be missed. Jase Robertson asked him about the daunting task of showing both the human Jesus and Jesus the Deity. On the human side, one episode shows Jesus tending to a cut on his wrist while also trying to start a fire using the โhand drillโ method โ painful to be sure.
โThe criticism we get comes from Christians. People come to the show from all types of Christianity including Mormons, Catholics, protestants. And they watch the show and expect it to fit their view of Jesus. They are like the modern day Pharisees,โ said Dallas Jenkins. He was then asked what negative feedback he gets from non-Christians. His reply? โNone.โ
And this got me thinking. In all of Jesusโ moments of conflict there rarely was a non-religious person at the forefront. His battlefield, His warrior-moments, came most frequently against the religious leaders. Those people who decided they knew what God had in mind for a Messiah. And Jesus wasnโt โit.โ
When placed faced to face with His opponent Jesus came prepared. He came armed with the belt of truth and sword of the spirit. He had to be prepared because the ultimate prize was not a piece of land. The prize was not a place on an earthly throne. No. The ultimate prize was the heart, mind and soul of the average person.
โJesus replied, โYou are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.โ Matthew 22:29
And that statement, my friends, can only be seen as โshots fired.โ
The Bible says, โfear notโ or โbe not afraidโ 103 times in the King James Bible. Jesus, himself, speaks some version of these words about 30 times. And yet so many of us fear taking the step toward being a warrior like Him and for Him.
We say we arenโt ready. That might be true. So, ask God to help you get ready.
We say we wonโt know what to say. Thatโs probably true. So, prepare and ask God to give you the words.
We say our church just doesn’t encourage that way of thinking. Maybe so. But Jesus didn’t come to start a denomination.
We say we might lose something in the battle. You might. But God always provides.
We say we will be seen as crazy, bigoted, unloving. The devil does love to deceive. So, we ask God to give us a loving heart and clear mind and we place our trust squarely on Him.
What does a warrior for God look like these days? We joke about the person on the corner with the โEnd is Nearโ sign. But while on vacation in Kauai a few weeks ago I saw a man โ he looked pretty normal actually, about in his 60s nicely dressed โ standing in the same spot on a busy road a few days in a row holding up a sign for all to see: โJesus is Near.โ Imagine what sort of feedback he mustโve received. We honked each time and gave him a thumbs up. He waved with a big smile. And I thought, โthat man was led to stand out on that street day after day waving at people holding that sign. Thatโs a warrior for God.โ
You know who else are warriors like Jesus? Moms and dads who go against the โnormโ and tell their kids they must follow in Jesusโ steps. Employees who arenโt afraid to talk about their faith while at work. Friends who arenโt worried about losing friendships because they wonโt โgo along to get along.โ People who are arenโt afraid of being โcancelledโ because they stood up for Christian morals and values.
Jesus didnโt come to smooth things over with religious leaders. He didnโt come to make a lot of friends. He didnโt desire to win a popularity contest. He came to save souls. He knows the end of this worldโs story. And so do we.
โTherefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. Matthew 24:42-44
Are you keeping watch over your house? Are you dressed in your God-given battle gear, standing ready to step onto the field? As Christians we are tasked with increasing Godโs glory on this earth. We are challenged to keep the thief out of our midst. It is the heart and mind of a warrior, like Jesus, that will accomplish both.
Since the resurrection of Jesus, Christians seem to have been in an interesting battle. The concept of how we are saved has led to many sermons, books, and even paper nailed to church doors. The prevailing answer in the modern church age is, of course, that we are saved by grace. The grace of Jesus Christ dying for our sins.
If you declare with your mouth, โJesus is Lord,โ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
That passage from Romans couldnโt be clearer and yet the concept of being saved by works and/or financial contributions to the church ran throughout Christendom for a long time. Unfortunately, much of our Christian thinking seems to have swung so far in the opposite direction that we have forgotten the other lessons in the Bible.
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? James 2:14
As my BSGs work our way through a study of Revelation I keep hearing a few of the same messages. 1) We must repent of our sins and accept Christ today and 2) Our deeds will be counted in eternity. That balance of accepting Godโs grace and also working to please Him echoes so many other Christian balancing acts.
Expressing Godโs Truth while showing Godโs Love
His Word is both bitter and sweet
To live in this world but not of it
Accepting chastisement as a method of Godโs love for us
I wonder how many of us each Sunday (or whatever day you attend church) receive constant training on how to walk those balance beams?
This weekโs Jesus Mindset focuses on being a humble servant. The character trait requires of us to first be somewhat practiced at being a loving friend. For when we take action in the name of God without a loving spirit it becomes almost impossible to be humble. Iโm sure each of us can think of a person in our lives who took on responsibilities simply to gain some sort of recognition. A church body that forgets Jesusโ primary character trait โ loving friend โ becomes like the church of Ephesus. They were โdoingโ a lot and building larger, more grand buildings but doing it without love.
โThe church used to be known for its good deeds,โ said one wit, โbut today itโs better known for its bad mortgages.โ
The evolution from love of neighbor to deeds without love creates a hulking body that God eventually is clearly unhappy with. And so, we find ourselves searching for the balance. This week I will highlight three people. Two sisters and a quiet, humble man. Each has their own way of โfeedingโ Godโs lambs. Each have different personalities. They each find a way to reach that balance of knowing they are saved by grace and yet God asks more of us.
I love this quote from the book, โThe Hiding Place,โ which tells the story of love and servanthood in the face of extreme adversity. This moment takes place as a member of the family is about to die. They remind her of all the amazing things she did in life because โaccomplishmentโ meant so much to her. But in her final moments Jesus spoke to her heart and reminded her of Godโs truths.
โHow can we bring anything to God? What does He care for our little tricks and trinkets?โ she asked. And then as we listened in disbelief she lowered her hands and with tears still coursing down her face whispered, โDear Jesus, I thank You that we must come with empty hands. I thank you that You have done all on the Cross and that all we need in life or death is to be sure of this.โ
Tante Jans, The Hiding Place
With empty, well-worn hands. Hands worn with the work for Jesus. For when we die we wonโt take the certificates of recognition, the medals, the bonuses with us. But each person we have fed, in His name, will be etched in our hands and hearts.
Then He said to his disciples, โThe harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.โ Matthew 9:37
Jesus has plenty of work for us to do. The majority of that work could be called โgrunt work.โ It requires us to get uncomfortable and place our trust solely in the Lordโs hands. You probably wonโt receive any money for it or a headline in the local paper. What we will receive is a smile from Jesus.
My friend Betsy told me the other day how, while out shopping, she saw a homeless man in an adjoining parking lot. He was in a wheelchair. As she got into her car Jesus placed the thought in her head, โGo give him one of your โblessings bags.โโ Her church provides these bags to hand out to anyone in need. She had never just walked up to someone and given them a bag.
But that day she pulled out of her parking spot and drove over to the man. He was struggling trying to get his wheelchair closed up so he could lie down on the same spot. As she approached the man, she could tell he was drunk. But she kept moving forward. She inquired, โDo you need some help?โ And he said he did. She helped him get situated and then offered a blessings bag, which he readily accepted. As she left she acknowledged to herself that she wouldnโt have taken that action previously โ some other force pressed her forward.
You see, Betsy has been a loving Christian for 60 some years. She has always served her church and family well. Recently she has been working on the โobeying Godโ part of her faith progression. Listening for His voice and taking action to be His humble servant. God has told her itโs time to move forward.
I’m taking a small break from writing as I listen for God’s direction. Right now I’m deep in the study of Revelation with my BSGs. Looking forward to what God reveals!
But you must return to your God; maintain love and justice, and wait for your God always.
Hosea 12:6
Iโve mentioned before that Iโm a โdoer.โ In the Bible, Martha is my spirit animal. I can so easily picture myself cooking and cleaning all day, getting ready for Jesus to come for dinner. Then while He is at my house Iโm running around making sure the drinks are filled and people have enough to eat. Cleaning up spills and getting a jump on doing the dishes. All the while, slightly annoyed that others are sitting at His feet, enjoying His company while I slave away.
Thereโs a lot of pride wrapped up in that thinking. And Iโve had to learn to accept my โdoingโ nature while learning two things: 1) accepting that other people are born to be the type to relax and soak up the moment and 2) learning how to balance being a doer and not missing out on those special moments. Because Jesus admonishes us from His teachings in the gospels to His messages in Revelation to โreturn to our first love.โ Meaning, Him.
Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
Revelation 2:4
This was the message to the church in Ephesus. They were doers. They took Jamesโ messages to heart. They worked hard, served many and were also great at making sure false teachers didnโt enter their midst. But they forgot to be in awe and wonder for the Lord.
How often, when we feel like we are moving away from our faith do we turn to โdoingโ more rather than taking up Maryโs approach โ sitting in awe and wonder at His feet?
Wonders are things out of the common, unusual things, extraordinary things. Usually they are unexpected; we wonder at them partly because they are novel and surprising. They take us aback; they are things which we looked not for. When they come they astonish us, and put us both in a muse and in a maze. We look, and look, and look, and cannot believe our eyes; we hear, and hear, and scarce believe our ears.
Charles Spurgeon
Sometimes I find myself listening to a story of wonder by a fellow Christian โ a story where God has worked miraculously in their life โ and I do a quick acknowledgement and move forward. As though this moment where God touched their life was so humdrum ordinary!
In a commentary on the restoration of our first love โ the awe and wonder of Jesus Christ โ Warren Wiersbe challenges us to take these steps:
Remember what we have lost.
Think back to when we were so excited about our relationship with the Lord. Remember when He has worked miraculously in our lives. Recall when we cried during our singing at church while we lifted our hands up to Him!
Repent (Change) our minds.
Decide that we want that awe, wonder and love back! It sounds obvious but if you havenโt done it yet, evaluate why.
Repeat your โ1st Works.โ
What are those? It was when you were devoted to prayer, mediation, Bible reading, service in His name, and worship
Thankfully, the world and God need both Marthas and Marys. When I get caught up in my โMartha-nessโ I remember that Jesus had His own special relationship with Her. It was Martha that ran out to meet Jesus after Lazarus had died. She proclaimed to Him that she believed Him to be the Messiah, the Son of God.
For some people, life may be monotonous and meaningless; but it doesn’t have to be. For the Christian believer, life is an open door, not a closed circle; there are daily experiences of new blessings from the Lord.
Warren Wiersbe
I want to always be in touch with my โFirst Love.โ I want to live with that sense of awe and wonder. And when I feel it fading I need only to sit in quiet mediation and allow His Holy Spirit to rekindle the flame within me.
Zion shall be redeemed by justice,
ย ย ย ย and those in her who repent, by righteousness.
But rebels and sinners shall be broken together,
ย ย ย ย and those who forsake theย Lordย shall be consumed.
Isaiah 1:27-28
My husband and I love vacationing in Kauai. Our favorite activity is exploring hidden beaches. When people think of Hawaii, they might picture long sandy beaches lined with palm trees that butt up against beautiful resorts. But in Kauai thereโs very few beaches like that. In fact, part of the adventure is just finding the hidden turnoff from the highway that will take you to the trailhead down to the beach. Many of the beaches sit far below the volcanic cliffs of Kauai. Once you park you then need to search for a tiny indication you have found the trailhead. And then the adventure really starts.
On one such adventure I was laden down with my beach chair on my back and our small cooler.ย ย The narrow, dirt trail hugged the cliff.ย ย And someone had secured a weathered rope in the most precarious places.ย ย I kept my eyes down, for the most part, keeping watch for pesky roots and vines that would trip me up.ย ย I kept hold of the safety rope, until I didnโt.ย ย In a flash I found myself hanging off the side of the cliff โ held up from sure death by my beach chair which had snagged on a few branches.ย ย I had taken my eyes of the sure path laid out in front of me โ distracted by the spectacular scenery.
The view from atop the cliff
I was like a helpless turtle on my back with waves crashing on the deadly rocks below. I yelled to my husband, who was a few feet ahead of me. He scrambled to me and with a lot of pulling, untangling and the blessing of God I was rescued.
Godโs promised justice, mentioned more than 40 times in the book of Isaiah, requires us to do what I had failed to do on that hike โ to keep my eyes fixed on the savior with a firm grip on Him.ย ย But thank God He also gives us mercy when we fail.ย
Yet theย Lordย longsย to be gracious to you;
ย ย ย ย therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.
For theย Lordย is a God of justice.
ย ย ย ย Blessed are all who wait for him!
Isaiah 30:18
You notice that both these verses require that agreement, the covenant? Those who repent will receive a positive justice outcome. Those who wait for Him will be blessed with compassion. When I finally made my way safely back onto the path that day, I thanked God for saving me. And I promised God that I would be more careful. I would hold on tightly to the safety rope as the path narrowed and Iโd be watchful of tripping hazards.
The book of Isaiah starts almost like a trial.ย ย It describes in detail the failings of the Israelites.ย ย The supposed believers had taken their eyes off God and were living outside His covenant.ย ย They sat accused of murder, robbery, idolatry, and corruption.ย ย They attended temple and brought their sacrifices, all the while leading hypocritical lives.ย ย And so, they were warned of punishment, of judgement.ย
One only needs to turn on the news for a few minutes to see the moral corruption throughout the current world.ย ย Thankfully, God has built a safety rope for us.ย ย Not with which to hang ourselves, but rather to grasp hold of and pull us back onto the path.
I was certainly humbled on that cliff in Kauai. I got a bit cocky with thinking I knew the path well enough to not pay full attention. God decided He still had some work for me to do.
But what about those โevil doers?โย ย When is Godโs justice raining down on them?ย ย He promises they will be consumed by His justice.ย ย When we keep our focus squarely and firmly on God, we can have faith that on Godโs time, justice will be done.ย ย And, we can thank Him each and every time we fail Him yet are not judged.
I saw heaven standing openย and there before me was a white horse, whose riderย is called Faithful and True.ย With justice he judges and wages war.
Revelation 19:1
God is waging a war against evil we cannot see.ย ย His justice is at work right now.ย ย And the final judgement is coming.ย ย I heard a well-known evangelist once make the statement: โImagine the looks on the peopleโs faces when Jesus comes back โ and He is coming back.ย ย All the people that tried to eliminate Jesus from the world about to face justice.โ
None of us deserve to be free from Godโs promised justice and judgement.ย ย His mercy and love provide that rope for us to grasp when we pray for forgiveness — when we fall down on our knees and say to Him, โHave mercy on me, exalted One!โ
If you were to Google โJesusโ last wordsโ what you would get is a long list of references to Jesusโ last words on the cross and their meaning. And while those last words are very important, if we think those were His actual last words recorded in the Bible we miss the amazing glory of who Jesus really is.
โI, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.โThe Spirit and the bride say, โCome!โ And let the one who hears say, โCome!โ Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.”
REvelation 22:16-17
Jesus wasnโt just about the physical man here on earth. He is so much more. The book of Revelation, written by John, reveals Godโs plans and purposes for His church. Itโs is the revelation of Jesus. According to Dr. Merrill Tenney, Jesus is the chief subject of Revelations. Christ is the exalted priest. And three times in the last chapter of Revelations Jesus interrupts John with His words.
These last amazing words of Jesus in the Bible are also the last of my commentary on Living Amazed through Jesus. And appropriately so. Looking back over all the topics they can all coalesce into two words โ follow Him. We can thank God, Jesus and His Holy Spirit every single day that the prophesy of Jesusโ return has yet to be fulfilled. Why? Because we still have a lot of His work to accomplished. God is giving us an opportunity to not only get our own lives in line with Jesusโ amazing ways but to also share with as many people as possible about the savior.
These last few words of Jesus should be at the front of every church. Let anyone who is thirsty come and take the free gift of living water that only He can provide. He has designed us to be His hands and feet to bring sinners into this amazing grace.
โIndeed, when the church lives in expectancy of Christโs return, such an attitude provokes ministry and evangelism as well as purity of heart.โ
Warren Wiersbe
As I have grown in my faith, I find it odd that there are โtraditionalโ churches and โevangelicalโ churches. Itโs clear in Jesusโ last (and many other teachings) Bible words we are all to take up the mantel of โevangelical.โ I was discussing this topic in one of my Bible studies the other night about sharing the gospel with others. One friend said she doesnโt feel comfortable โopening that doorโ with people. I shared how I am praying every single day for just one believer to โopen that doorโ to my eldest daughter. I know God is asking me to be a good example for her but I also know He is seeking someone else to bring her to Christ.
Arenโt there numerous people in your life that you hope would accept Jesus as their savior? Itโs hypocritical of us to pray for a miracle in someoneโs life if we arenโt willing to be that miracle.
Of all the amazing things Jesus said and did throughout the Bible He was always clear on our role in Godโs Kingdom. We are to help gather up as many as possible and place them solidly in His hands. Our job has never been to sit nicely in church, enjoy a few songs and hear a good speech. Itโs to be compelled to share His amazing love with the world.
