Pray It Till You Make It

Although controversial to some, I credit evangelist Joyce Meyer with the jumpstart to my transformation from โ€œbaby Christianโ€ to a maturing one.ย ย Why? The day I broke down and said to God, โ€œWhy am I still so unhappy?ย ย Why canโ€™t I experience joy and peace in my life?โ€ He admonished me and asked, โ€œWhat have you really done?โ€ย ย Yes, He really did say that, out loud, twice.ย ย I landed on my knees and asked Him to direct me.ย ย I knew that I hadnโ€™t been โ€œall in.โ€ย ย My first step was to go and buy a devotional.ย ย As I stood in front of the many books I prayed, โ€œGod, tell me which is the one I need right now.โ€ย ย And thatโ€™s how I ended up with Ms. Meyerโ€™s book,ย Power Thoughts.

โ€œPower Thought: My thoughts are not hidden from God. I know I can change with His help.โ€ย

Joyce Meyer, Power Thoughts Devotional: 365 Daily Inspirations for Winning the Battle of the Mind

The reason it spoke to me is that it focused on that tiny part of me that ends up ruling everything about my life โ€“ my thoughts.ย ย At the time, I proudly wore a badge of pessimism.ย ย I was constantly outraged, angry, hurt or sad.ย ย And yet on the outside my life was truly blessed.ย ย I needed to attack the devil living inside my head with the power of God (Psalms 139:23).

Words are extremely powerful.  They can hurt and heal.  They can tear down and build up.  They can cause fear and joy.  With words we can complain or comfort.  And what is prayer but words?

Iโ€™ve been challenged to create a list of statements about my life as God sees it (Isaiah 55:8). Itโ€™s not a list of what Iโ€™m like right now.ย ย Itโ€™s not a New Yearโ€™s resolution list.ย ย Itโ€™s a list of prayers, based on the Word of God, of what I will be and have in my life with Godโ€™s intervention.

Power of Positive Thinking โ€“ Mayo Clinic

“Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative. Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other self-talk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information.

If the thoughts that run through your head are mostly negative, your outlook on life is more likely pessimistic. If your thoughts are mostly positive, you’re likely an optimist โ€” someone who practices positive thinking.”

This may sound a bit โ€œnew ageโ€ โ€“ and itโ€™s true that a list of positive changes in our lives that we decide to just talk about may never come to fruition.ย ย But as Christians we have the transformational power of prayer at our fingertips (James 5:16).ย ย And our challenge will be to not only listen to the Holy Spirit for guidance but to then pray daily those changes.

It is not so true that โ€œprayer changes thingsโ€ as that prayer changes me and I change things. God has so constituted things that prayer on the basis of Redemption alters the way in which a man looks at things. Prayer is not a question of altering things externally, but of working wonders in a manโ€™s disposition.

Vessels of Good News

As the rainย and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seedย for
the sower and bread for the eater,
so is my wordย that goes out from
my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purposeย for
which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:10-11

The Gospel is good news. Plain and simple. The actual word โ€œgospelโ€ is translated to mean โ€œgood storyโ€ or โ€œgood newsโ€ in Greek. But the question is โ€“ if the Gospel truly is good news, why is it so hard for us to talk about it?

Iโ€™ll rewind a bit and start from the very beginning. For those who have always heard the word Gospel, but never heard the story of the Gospel, here it is:

1. God created us for his glory (Creation).

2. Therefore, every human should live for Godโ€™s glory.

3. Nevertheless, we have all sinned and fallen short of Godโ€™s glory (the Fall).

4. Therefore, we all deserve eternal punishment (Hell).

5. Yet, in his great mercy, God sent his only Son Jesus Christ into the world to provide for sinners the way of eternal life (the Cross).

6. Therefore, eternal life is a free gift to all who will trust in Christ as Lord and Savior and supreme Treasure of their lives (Salvation).

John Piper

All that to say, the Gospel is indeed good news. It means eternal intimacy in the presence of God, forgiveness of sins and citizenship in Heaven where there will be no more sorrow or pain โ€“ ever. For those of us who have been saved by grace through faith and are living testimonies of the power of the Gospel, we are all vessels of this good news.

As Isaiah writes in chapter 55, God is proclaiming and promising that the good news he has sent down to earth (salvation through his Son Jesus), will indeed be fulfilled and carried from nation to nation until Jesus returns again.

As described in verse 10, God sent down Jesus like rain, to water a dry and barren earth. God has promised us that this rain would not leave the earth dry and barren, but that it would be fully watered until it is returned to its original perfect creation. Right now, we are still in the watering phase of Godโ€™s plan for creation. The land is still thirsty and in need of the living water, and thankfully, we as Christians know just where to find it.

Those in Christ are not just blessed with knowing the truth of the Gospel, we are called to share it. As the Jesusโ€™ Great Commission states in Matthew 28:

Goย thereforeย andย makeย disciplesย ofย
allย nations,baptizingย themย in the
nameย ofย theย Fatherย andย ofย theย Sonย
andย ofย theย Holyย Spirit,ย teaching
themย toย observeย allย thatย Iย haveย commanded
you.ย Andย behold, Iย amย withย youย always,
toย theย endย ofย theย age.
Matthew 28:19-20

We are vessels of good news and have the refreshing drink our thirsty world is gasping for. Sharing the Gospel may not always be easy, but it is always Godโ€™s will for us to share the good news of Jesus Christ. We are a part of Godโ€™s redemption story for this world. He uses us, ordinary people, to return to Creation what was robbed by sin.

I challenge you today to change your perspective from one of fear and hesitation towards sharing the Gospel, to one of joy and anxious anticipation for sharing the good news of salvation. As believers, we exist to serve God โ€“ not the other way around. Start today by remembering that God is using you as a divine vessel of good news, created and saved to play an important role in His plan for our world.

Relish in that promise today.

His Lifeline of Love

In a surge of anger I hidย my
face from you for a moment,
but with everlasting kindness
I will have compassionย on you,โ€
says theย Lordย your Redeemer.
โ€œTo me this is like the days of Noah,
when I swore that the waters of Noah
would never again cover the earth.
So now I have swornย not to be angryย
with you, never to rebukeย you again.
Though the mountains be shaken
and the hills be removed,
yet my unfailing loveย for you will
not be shaken nor my covenantย of
peaceย be removed,โ€ says theย Lord,
who has compassionย on you.
Isaiah 54:10

I recently stumbled upon these verses while doing a study of Genesis. As you read above, verse nine discusses โ€œthe days of Noahโ€ and recounts the covenant God made with Noah after the flood waters receded. Noah then built an altar in remembrance of all from which God had delivered him. In witnessing Noahโ€™s obedience, God established a covenant of peace with Noah, promising him that never again would he wipe out all of mankind in anger (Gen. 8:20-22).ย

When God called Noah to build the ark and spared his family from the worldwide destruction, God extended Noah a lifeline of love. Because he had compassion on Noah and truly loved mankind, God created a way out of death by giving Noah clear guidance for surviving the flood.

God showed Noah that while yes, sin had entered the world and man was disobedient, that He still loved His creation. We often get caught up on Godโ€™s wrath by sending the flood in the first place. Mass destruction and death seems a bit harsh. But if God was so harsh, then why did he save Noah? He couldโ€™ve wiped out all of mankind on Earth and started over, but His steadfast love for Noah and his offspring prevailed. God showed Noah that no matter how bad things got on Earth, His lifeline of love would always be there for those who trust in Him with complete obedience.ย

That lifeline shown to Noah, is Jesus. When the Lord states, in Isaiah 54:10, that his steadfast love shall not depart from you โ€“ He is talking about His son Jesus. You see, from Noah until now, we as believers all still hold on to the same lifeline that Noah, Abraham, Moses and David held onto.

The covenant God established with all those men was the covenant of His Son. The promise that one day, there would be complete restoration of all sinners who call on His name and that those holding on to the lifeline of His steadfast love,ย would all be brought into the glories of heaven.ย

Though 2020 has seemed like a worldwide disaster โ€“ think again. There will be the day when every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord because of the power of God they see all around them. Godโ€™s steadfast love for us believers never expires. We have the eternal hope of Godโ€™s love forever โ€“ into eternity.ย

This is love: not that we loved God,
but that he loved usย and sent his
Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
1 John 4:10

Until then, we hold fast to His lifeline of love. Hold fast to the God that established His covenant with ordinary people like Noah and Abraham and you and me. Through His son Jesus Christ, he once again established his eternal love with us โ€“ until the day we see him again.ย

Godโ€™s love is abundant to those who trust in Him. He cares for us and loves us as His children โ€“ are you resting in that truth today?ย  Have you accepted your side of the covenant?

Since you are precious and honoredย in my sight,
ย ย ย ย and because I loveย you,
I will give people in exchange for you,
ย ย ย ย nations in exchange for your life.
Isaiah 43:4

Historical Perspective

Iโ€™ve heard a lot of media types say this year is one of the most difficult โ€œof all time.โ€ As humans we tend to look at history from our own timeframe. When we do that it negates all the trials and tribulations so many before us have endured.
.
As Christians we need to grasp hold of the many promises of which God clearly states in His Holy Word. When we do, we find that people have successfully endured extreme hardships for 1,000s of years because they placed their faith in Him.

Living Amazed

From the first day of Earth to today, God has been doing amazing things in our lives. And when Jesus preached and performed miracles, the Bible frequently says the people were amazed. Each day we get up to start a new day. Each day we put our feet on the floor, have breakfast, brush our teeth, and then go about our daily routine. We do the laundry, wash the dishes, log in another long day at work. It’s so easy to live in the humdrum of every day. But God is still doing amazing things!

I’ve spent much of my adult life being a pessimist. As I grew closer to Jesus it became almost impossible to continue looking at life, people and circumstances constantly from a negative point of view. God transformed me. And that, my friends, is pretty darn amazing.

Join me and my special guest writer as we explore all the amazing acts of Jesus starting November 1 through 29. My hope is that each day we will help you take these amazing Jesus acts and translate them into your amazing life.

Are you ready to explore and enjoy this amazing God-given life through Jesus? Join us by signing up today to receive your emailed posts!

When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching

Love+Mercy=Deeds

When my youngest daughter began her college search 6 years ago she was determined to go somewhere far away from home.  Her preference was to play field hockey on the east coast.  After visiting six states and six colleges in the course of five days we still didnโ€™t land on the perfect place.  And then out of the blue she got a call from a school in Missouri who wanted to recruit her.  Her reaction, โ€œno way am I going to school in the Midwest.โ€  After a solo visit to the school and the team she changed her mind.  She loved it.  Set on the banks of the Missouri river, just 20 minutes from St. Louis is St. Charles.  Itโ€™s a quaint town mostly known for being the starting point for Lewis and Clark.  The school, Lindenwood University, fit all our requirements.  It also was a Presbyterian founded school.  Sitting on the board was the pastor for the large, local Presbyterian church.

The weekend she moved in I took a trip over to that local Presbyterian church.  It shared a fence with the university.  I asked to speak with the pastor and see what programs they had in conjunction with the school.  As I spoke with his secretary, he could see me from his open office door.  He could hear me speaking to her.  He never got up from his desk.  In fact, the answer to my question about the partnership with the university students brought a blank stare.  I asked what mission projects they do in St. Louis, and again I got a blank stare.  My heart broke.  Here was a large church, founded in 1818, and 1952 it formed a partnership with the college.  About 68 years later it has failed the thousands of students that pass through the college each year.

Lindenwood University was my daughter’s home away from home for 3 1/2 years

Why tell this tale?  James admonishes us to love our neighbors, not pass judgement without mercy, and to show our faith with deeds.  And yet this large church found it difficult to do all of these.  They were stuck in the success they already had and lost focus on their purpose โ€“ to always be bringing new people to Christ.  Like so many churches they waited to see who would show up for church.  The secretary told me they had once tried a Sunday evening worship designed for the students but hardly anyone came.  So, they gave up.  I asked her, โ€œDid you try going to them?โ€  Another blank stare.

James 1 and 2 are all about shaking us awake.  Pleading with us to be โ€œdoing Christiansโ€ rather than pew-sitting Christians.  Real justification โ€“ a saved life โ€“ leads to a changed life.  He reminds us that serving our Lord may make us uncomfortable when we invite the poor or unknown to sit next to us.  He also points out that the rich or those we show favoritism to frequently are the ones that treat us the worst.

โ€œIs it not the rich that are exploiting you?  Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?  Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him whom you belongโ€

James 2:6

A poor, lonely college student would jump at the chance for a free meal at a campus BBQ or an invite to dinner into someoneโ€™s home. They donโ€™t have much to offer us, except their company.  They might not look like us, talk like us, or believe exactly like us.  They probably wonโ€™t find their way to a church by themselves.  The mere act of reaching outward and being a friendly face to those who donโ€™t feel comfortable walking into our church doors shows them mercy.  Think about the last time you were at a social gathering and didnโ€™t know anyone.  Finally, someone comes up to you and strikes up a conversation.  You are filled with relief that you are no longer alone.

โ€œOffer hospitality to one another without grumbling.  Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of Godโ€™s grace in its various forms.โ€

1 Peter 4:10

When we stand in front of the gates of heaven, expressing our thankfulness for the gift of salvation we will be judged.  Jesus may stand there smiling that gentle smile back at us.  And then say with sadness, โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you ever open and use my gift?โ€  We beg for Godโ€™s grace, mercy, love and forgiveness.  And when we are bestowed all those, do we open them up for all the world to see?  I once asked my husband for a fancy mixer.  It could whip, grind, shred and all manner of cooking/baking related activities.  But if he had given me exactly what I wanted and I thanked him profusely yet never opened the box and used that mixer, wouldnโ€™t my husband think I didnโ€™t truly appreciate it?

Open, open, open

When we donโ€™t judge people for their age, what they wear, how they talk, what their background is, their politics, etc., and just accept people as we encounter them, they are open to our love and our message of Godโ€™s love.  Imagine that church in St. Charles holding a first weekend BBQ for anyone who wanted a free hotdog and an invite to a worship service.  Or,  a helpful church team assisting parents and students moving into the dorms along with a care package with a card welcoming them.  A contact number to call if they need help.   And each month having an outreach event to just say, โ€œwe are here and we love you.โ€

You see, when we accept the challenge of loving our neighbors and showing them mercy, God opens the doors to all the best deeds.  And even if just one person responds, thatโ€™s one more person on Godโ€™s side of the ledger.  We should all be praying regularly for opportunities like this to be placed in front of us.  When you become Godโ€™s co-worker (1 Cor. 3:9) you lose count of all the blessings that unfold.   As for my daughter, the Christ-centered group Athletes In Action met regularly on campus and another student invited her to come.  It saved her in so many ways.  She eventually become a leader and a speaker who told her testimony to many other student-athletes.  She also met her future husband through the organization.  As a parent living almost 2,000 miles away, I still remain ever thankful there were Christians who took up Jamesโ€™ challenge.

If you know a Christian athlete who is in college, encourage them to look up Athletes In Action

Will you take up Jamesโ€™ challenge this weekend?ย ย Pray for your eyes to be opened to opportunities to show your faith by your deeds, love and mercy. Click on the photo and listen to this song by Danny Gokey and Mandisa called “Tell Somebody.” It’s a great song about opening up that gift!

Lord, I Cry Out For Mercy

She was rarely โ€œlate.โ€  With each passing day she began to worry more.  She and her boyfriend knew better but they were young, just 15 and 16.  They frequently met up for sex while his mother was at work.  And they didnโ€™t use protection.  So, five days after she shouldโ€™ve started her period, she found herself sitting on the toilet, with a small Tupperware bowl waiting to catch her urine.  She had never been to a clinic before and had called to see if they could do a pregnancy test.  As she sat there, she prayed.  She wasnโ€™t a church-goer.  In fact, her parents never spoke of God.  Yet she regularly was moved to pray.  She didnโ€™t know what it meant to trust God or receive justification through faith in Jesus.  She just knew she needed to pray.  She had prayed for a lot of things over the years.  For her mom to stop hitting her.  For her dad to speak to her.  For her brother to stop tormenting her.  She didnโ€™t know if God was listening but she kept praying.

As she sat there praying for mercy โ€“ because thatโ€™s what would have to happen โ€“ she swore she would change her ways.ย ย She made empty promises, begging to not be pregnant. And just as she began to capture a sample, her period started.ย ย God had not only granted her mercy but also mercy on her potential child.ย ย For had she been pregnant she most assuredly would have aborted it.

That girl was me.ย ย I didnโ€™t deserve His mercy.ย ย I was living in sin, regularly.ย ย I created my own set of rules โ€“ a false sense of โ€œrighteousness.โ€ย ย I deserved the punishment.ย ย I deserved to have to face a difficult choice and live with it for the rest of my life.ย ย But He showed mercy.ย ย Iโ€™ve remembered that day for the past 39 years like it was yesterday.ย ย But how many times have I failed to show others that same mercy?

โ€œSpeak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgement without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful.ย ย Mercy triumphs over judgement.โ€

James 2:12-13

I was recently listening to a podcast by Joyce Meyer.  She spoke about not being mediocre.  Mediocre is halfway between being a failure and being successful.  The work of not being mediocre is constantly seeking knowledge, constantly improving ourselves.  So, the other day I set about creating a Christian definitions list. We sit in church, listen to podcasts, read devotionals but how many times do we hear buzz words or theology that we just donโ€™t grasp?  Hereโ€™s my starting list:

Righteousness: our outward appearance of Godโ€™s truth.ย ย Our actions and our words.ย ย Itโ€™s important to note that without the ingredient of Godโ€™s truth we create a โ€œfalse, man-made righteousness.โ€ (2Tim 3:16)

Sanctification: the process by which the Holy Spirit molds us into Jesusโ€™ image (1Thes 4:1)

Justification: when we pronounce our faith in Jesus Christ and we are instantly saved. (Gal 2:16)

Grace: simply put, Godโ€™s favor and kindness towards us.ย And He shows us grace in different ways:

  1. Salvation Grace: is when our freedom was purchased through Jesusโ€™ blood (Eph 2:8)
  2. Numerous Grace: God forgives me each time I sin (Rom 6:14)
  3. Forgiveness Grace: When God helps me to forgive others (James 4:6)
  4. New Grace: each day I have the opportunity to begin again (Heb 13:25)
  5. Freedom Grace: I am free to forget about other peopleโ€™s opinions and just be me (1Cor 15:10)
  6. Future Grace: God has promised to be with me at all times (Heb 4:16)

Mercy: when we are not given the punishment we deserve. (PS 40:11-13)

When I wrote all this down I received clarity of the amazing work God, through His Holy Spirit,ย ย does in each of us.ย ย But most of all I thought about mercy.ย ย I understood that God forgives us each time we fall into the traps of sin.ย ย We all have been in the situation Paul lamented when he wrote the following:

Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.ย ย For in my inner being I delight in Godโ€™s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me.ย ย What a wretched man I am!ย

Romans 7:21-24

Each and every day we find ourselves sinning โ€“ worried about money, hoarding our gifts, being judgmental and unkind to others, unforgiving of our loved ones or even strangers.ย ย Gossiping, stealing, or even hating or causing injury to others.ย ย There is only one being to have ever walked this earth that didnโ€™t need Godโ€™s grace, forgiveness and mercy โ€“ Jesus.

Charles Spurgeon wrote in his prayer โ€œDeliver Us From Evil about mercy.

โ€œWe come for mercy, great God.ย ย It must always be our first request, for we have sinned against a just and holy law of which our consciences approve.ย ย We are evil, but Your law is holy and just and good.ย ย We have offended knowingly.โ€

Charles Spurgeon

I knew having sex outside of marriage was wrong.ย ย I knew having unprotected sex outside of marriage was stupid.ย ย And yet I did it time after time.ย ย God gifted me with mercy over and over.ย ย He also gifted me with mercy when He delivered the right man to me to become my husband.ย ย I didnโ€™t deserve him.ย ย I was a mess.ย ย After 31 years of marriage I still thank God my husband has stuck with me as I erase the ways I learned while outside of Godโ€™s justification. And I know now, itโ€™s time for me to pick up my part of the bargain.

Blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy.

Matthew 5:7

Iโ€™m grateful that God flipped this admonition.ย ย He has done it with so many of us.ย ย He has shown us the mercy we didnโ€™t deserve.ย ย We need to pass that glorious gift along to others.ย ย There are those in our lives that we hope to fail, that we wish ill will, that we hope will โ€œget their just due.โ€ย ย Arenโ€™t we thankful that God doesnโ€™t think the same about us?

For about two years I worked as a substitute in a high school office.  I job-shared for a woman who was completing her counseling certification.  There were two positions like mine.  When the other position was filled with a young woman I was encouraged by her enthusiasm.  She was full of ideas and brought a cheery face to the job.  And then she started being late every day.  At times she wouldnโ€™t even show up.  When she did show up, I would find her on Facebook or on personal phone calls.  Her failings impacted my job.  I became bitter because, hey, I was just a substitute.  Why should I have to make up for her issues when she was an actual employee?  I found myself driving to work dreading what was to come.  I actually prayed she would get hit by a bus so I wouldnโ€™t have to deal with her anymore.  Yes, I did that.

The turmoil got so bad I considered quitting.ย ย But I knew that would leave others, whom I considered friends, in a difficult situation.ย ย Three months in, I sat at an intersection on the way to work.ย ย It was a long red light.ย ย The Holy Spirit descended on me in the car.ย ย I had my Perspective Change Moment.ย ย What I should have been doing all along was praying for God to intervene positively in her life.ย ย I could have left her to do two peopleโ€™s jobs and/or complain endlessly to the supervisor, but I needed to show mercy and love.ย ย So, I prayed every day for the next week that God would resolve the problem.ย ย For God to help her.ย ย For God to take control.ย ย The peace that came over me was amazing!

After that one week she resigned.ย ย And a good friend of mine who had been a finalist for the job previously was hired.ย ย God is good.ย ย God is forgiving.ย ย God, thankfully, is merciful.ย ย ย I love this quote by Christopher Columbus about mercy:

I am a most noteworthy sinner, but I have cried out to the Lord for grace and mercy, and they have covered me completely.ย ย I have found the sweetest consolation since I made it my whole purpose to enjoy His marvelous presence.

To whom do you need to show mercy?ย ย How has God been merciful to you?

Slow To Anger

My friend Andrea and I walk our dogs every week together.  I typically have my dog on an โ€œe-leashโ€ so Iโ€™m very careful to make sure people around me know I have complete control over my dog when it appears he is off leash.  We decided to take a new neighborhood route one day.  As we passed one house my dog stopped to sniff a small sign at the edge of the grass.  It said, โ€œKeep Dogs Off Grass.โ€  I gave my dog the command to heel and he quickly took up the short distance between us.  The homeowner bolted from the far side of his car and commenced yelling at us.  โ€œGet your dog off my grass!โ€  We were both taken aback at his aggressiveness.  My first response was to get my hackles up and yell back, โ€œHe wasnโ€™t on your grass.โ€ Andrea, in a nicer tone, confirmed this to the owner.  But he wouldnโ€™t let up.  He yelled at us as we walked by.  And I yelled back.  The war had commenced.  Salvos were lobbed.  In the midst, Andrea became the peacemaker.  She had the peace of mind to realize this was not the hill to die on today.  She started saying, โ€œOk sir, have a nice day.โ€   He continued to yell at us while we were about 4 houses away.  My anger was apparent.  And I realized I had failed gloriously that morningโ€™s first test.

Jamesโ€™ admonishment sounds so simple. ย ย And yet I would guess amongst millions of Christians our failure rate in accomplishing this is fairly high.ย

โ€œEverybody should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.โ€

James 1:19-20.

Think of how much those millions of Christians could change the world if we accomplished just this one act.ย Proverbs 16:32 says, โ€œBetter a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.โ€ย ย Now, being of warrior spirit I struggle with this.ย ย But I realized the ingredient that makes a difference โ€“ anger.ย ย When God sent out Joshua to take cities he didnโ€™t tell him to do so in anger.ย ย In fact, many of the actions he directed him to take were strangely non-warrior like such as marching around cities in circles and blowing horns.ย ย

Ephesians 4:26 says, โ€œIn your anger do not sin; Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.โ€ย ย God knows we get mad.ย ย But he also tells us to be careful and not also take that anger and sin.ย ย When Jesus cleansed the synagogues of โ€œthievesโ€ he was more sad than angry.ย ย He wept to see what Israel had become.ย ย Think of the destruction and affliction Jesus could have wrought on everyone!ย ย But instead He cursed a tree.ย ย If Jesus โ€“ the most powerful being to grace the earth — could restrain himself canโ€™t we tamp down our anger at the grocery store clerk for taking a bit too long?ย ย Or the person who doesnโ€™t immediately bolt forward at the green light?ย ย All the while our cross necklace dangles around our neck.

But letโ€™s back up a bit.  James first tells us to be quick to listen and slow to speak.  Proverbs 18:13 says, โ€œTo answer before listening โ€“ that is folly and shame.โ€  How many of us, while someone is talking to us, are working on our own story or rebuttal in our head as that person speaks?  What we miss are opportunities.

#1 Opportunity to Show Empathy

We can tell when someone is really listening to us.ย ย Itโ€™s called active listening.ย ย According to Mat Apodaca in his article, โ€œHow to Practice Active Listening,โ€ active listening involves using many of our senses.ย ย It means giving your full attention.ย ย You need to show the other person with your body language that you are truly listening.ย ย He says doing this builds mutual trust, it boosts self-confidence, we have less miscommunication, have fewer arguments, and are more productive.ย ย Hereโ€™s his steps to active listening:

  1. Maintain eye contact
  2. Donโ€™t fidget
  3. No interrupting
  4. Watch for non-verbal clues
  5. Restate and clarify
  6. Use some encouraging words such as, โ€œand then?โ€
  7. Probe for more information
  8. But keep your talking minimal
  9. Validate

I had invited a friend out to lunch awhile back.ย ย I wanted to try and recover our relationship.ย ย We had grown apart in various ways and it had come to a head with some back and forth justifying of our hurts.ย ย As we sat across from each other I looked for ways to bridge our gaps.ย ย Topics we could both agree on.ย ย But the entire time she kept looking down at her phone that rested in her lap.ย ย She murmured responses.ย ย I finally asked her if something important was going on that she needed to keep reading her phone.ย ย Her two younger children, around ages 15 and 13 were at home.ย ย They were bickering and sending her text messages.ย ย No one was dying.ย ย No one was hurt.ย ย I realized she not only wasnโ€™t interested in the conversation, she wasnโ€™t interested in our relationship.ย

How many times have you done this to others?

#2 Opportunity to Hear from God

When we find ourselves listening to people who are angry, hurt, sad, or fearful we so often want to help.ย ย We might share our own past situations or try to convince that person to think or feel differently.ย ย But we always end up coming from our own view of the situation.ย ย Our wheels are whirling for solutions to their problems, or how to get them to stop being angry at us.ย ย With all that jumbled up thinking going on itโ€™s awfully difficult for the one true voice to be heard.ย ย God can see all solutions.ย ย He knows exactly what to say, and more importantly what not to say. Charles Spurgeon says about praying continuously: โ€œWe need to have such confidence about our prayer life that prayer becomes like breathing, effortless, that we do it every moment we are alive.โ€

How many times have you left a conversation and later thought, โ€œOh, if only I had thought of that then!โ€  When we are actively listening, we can be more like a super highway.  Sending your friendโ€™s, spouseโ€™s, childโ€™s, co-workerโ€™s, strangerโ€™s, words straight up to God.   Acting as more of a conduit for Godโ€™s instruction, rather than the encyclopedia of all things of how to do (fill in the blank) right.  You might just hear God remind us of Jesusโ€™ words:

โ€œBut to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.โ€

Luke 6:27

Had I been listening to the angry neighbor I would have heard a few things: 1) He has had issues with dogs on his grass.ย ย 2) He really loves his grass, a lot.ย ย 3) Love himย

Before we build fences let’s first listen to each other and God

#3 Opportunity to Find A New Solution

You really cannot have a relationship with someone you donโ€™t listen to.  That includes God.  If we want to transform our relationships, we need to hear what people and God are saying.  Ecclesiastes 5: 1-2 says:

โ€œGuard your steps when you go to the house of God.ย ย Go near to listen rather than to offer sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.ย ย Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God.โ€

When we offer up our own solutions, based on our own limited thoughts, they are made within a small framework.  But God knows all and sees all solutions.  We so frequently want to hear our own plans and arguments because we still want to control everything โ€“ even God.

In 2 Chronicles 20, the ruler Jehoshaphat was faced with destruction by the Moabites and Ammonites.ย ย He gathered up various advisors to discuss solutions.ย ย You can only imagine the various types around the tent.ย ย The warrior, demanding they strike first.ย ย The appeaser, begging for them to send out an ambassador to beg for mercy.ย ย The fearful, worried they were all going to die.ย ย But verse 3 says, โ€œAlarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord.โ€ย ย He resolved.ย ย He made a conscious decision, after listening to everyone to then listen to God.ย ย And God came up with a solution that not one of those in attendance had even dreamed.ย ย To not fight, but instead to take up their battle positions, standing firm and have faith in God.ย ย The king then appointed men to sing.ย ย Yes, sing.ย ย And they watched God destroy the enemy.

It is our faith that God loves us — God wants the best for us that we must first rest upon.ย ย With that as our anchor we can know when we actively listen we show the same love and empathy we receive from God.ย ย When we are slow to speak it is because we are listening for Godโ€™s voice to channel through us.ย ย And when we keep our anger in check we honor the God that thankfully does not condemn us each time we fail.

When was there a time that you either realized you had failed gloriously at this lesson or when you were successful?ย ย How did you feel after?
