The Unchanging God in a Changing World

โ€œFor I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob are not consumed.โ€ Malachi 3:6

โ€œJesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.โ€ Hebrews 13:8

A few years ago, my Bible Study Girls were asked to create a faith growth chart.  We were to mark where we thought our faith was at say 5-10 years ago and then where it was at the time of the study.  As we shared our charts it was great to see that all of us felt we had grown in our faith lives.  We also all showed times where we plateaued.  As Christians, we call this being sanctified by God.  We were justified with God when we accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior.  We are currently being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.  And one day we will be glorified when we see Christ again.  Thatโ€™s Christian growth.

Our lives, believers or not, are filled with changes.  Changes in our bodies, beliefs, relationships, financial situations and more.  We are reflections of all of Godโ€™s creations โ€“ we are born, we live and one day we die.  Returned to the dust.  In this way we are wholly divergent from our Creator.  A Creator who is immutable, never changing.

โ€œOf old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, but you are the same, and your years have no end.โ€  Psalm 102:25-27

Progressive Teaching vs Biblical Teaching

Liberal thinking, in politics, religion and society, is that everything changes.  Everything grows above and beyond yesteryear.  That thinking gives us โ€œprogressivism.โ€  Liberal pastors and bible teachers believe the Bible is a dusty book with old fashioned rules and ways of living.  They pick and choose what us โ€œmodern believersโ€ should follow as we become more advanced.  But in holding to that interpretation they also have to believe that God is ever changing.  Which the Bible makes clear He is not.

God doesnโ€™t change His mind.  Why?  Because He is omnipotent and therefore already had all the information needed to form His thoughts.  God doesnโ€™t seek to improve because that implies He wasnโ€™t perfect to begin with.  God doesnโ€™t have a growth chart โ€“ He is beyond time.

โ€œThe grass withers, the flower fades: but the word of our God shall stand forever.โ€ Isaiah 40:10

So while King Solomon in Ecclesiastes 3 accurately shows thereโ€™s a season for everything — life and death, joy and sadness, and a time to be born and a time to die — God does not exist by those constraints.  And for that we should be eternally grateful.

A Steady Hand

For much of my life I was waiting for the proverbial other shoe to drop.  In other words, when things were good, I just knew theyโ€™d take a turn for the worse.  Unfortunately, when things were bad I just figured theyโ€™d also get worse.  As my faith chart has soared, I can rest in the truths of Godโ€™s Word.  He has a plan for us for all eternity, and it is good.  He wonโ€™t pull a rug out from under me.  He is the Rock I can count on.  His truth is something to which we can hold fast.  Letโ€™s remember the words written about 3,000 years ago: โ€œFor the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.โ€ (Ps 100:5)

We look around us and can believe things seem so much worse than โ€œbefore.โ€  We look in the mirror and see new lines and wrinkles.  The seasons outside our windows come and go.  Instead of despair we can look to the immutable God and see a steady hand guiding us to something better.  A hope that we should pray all those whom we love would have.  We build our life on His steady hill so as storms come and go, we are not rocked or defeated.

โ€œNever will I leave you; never will I forsake you.โ€  Hebrews 13:5

Friends, His Word is true, good and never changing.  While culture may have been different in biblical times, manโ€™s propensity to sin carries on for thousands upon thousands of years.  Thereโ€™s scripture that says something like, nothing has happened to you that hasnโ€™t happened already to someone else.  Itโ€™s good to remember that because then we can look to God and see just how He has always wanted the situation resolved.  The answers were carved in stone, then papyrus, then on a printing press, and now in our hearts.  The same words of the Old Testament were read by Jesus.  And His words by believers almost 2,000 years ago.

We donโ€™t need a โ€œnew wordโ€ or a shiny new god.  We need to rest in and believe the everlasting, unchanging God who rules the world with wisdom, grace and justice.

Everlasting (Psalm 90) by Sovereign Grace Music

O God, before the mountains were brought forth
Or days of spring and summer filled the earth
From everlasting, You are God

We dwell beneath the stars in ancient skies
A thousand years are nothing in Your sight
From everlasting, You are God

And all our days are held within Your hands
Your perfect love and favor have no end
We rest within the wisdom of Your plan
Everlasting God

It’s Not You, It’s Him

Philippians 1:6ย ย โ€œbeing confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.โ€

In a survey done a few years ago about what Christians believe, more than half (55%) agree that โ€œeveryone sins a little, but most people are good by nature.โ€ย ย I have to assume that when people answer questions like this, theyโ€™re thinking specifically about themselves and people they love.ย ย Because friend, if you believe this you havenโ€™t poked your head outside in a while, like a long, long while.ย ย You havenโ€™t been to a kidโ€™s sports event.ย ย Apparently, you were asleep during the great toilet paper crisis of 2019.ย ย Thatโ€™s just the small stuff.ย ย If you really want to know how good we humans are, read up on your national and international news.ย ย War, rampant fraud, poverty, murders, rapes, greed โ€“ getting the true picture of all that goodness?

Christians who believe they are basically good then must erase the need for Jesus.ย ย I suppose this error still works for that 55% since the survey also found that almost half (44%) say that Jesus was a great teacher, but he was not God.ย ย Thus, we donโ€™t need anyone to come and save us from our sins, right?ย ย We donโ€™t need anyone to clean us up, clothe us in majesty so we can stand righteously before the One True God.

That definitely wasnโ€™t the prophet Isaiah when He was brought before God.ย ย Isaiah 6:5 shows us his situation — โ€œWoeย to me!โ€ I cried. โ€œI am ruined!ย For I am a man of unclean lips,ย and I live among a people of unclean lips,ย and my eyes have seenย the King,ย theย Lordย Almighty.โ€

Isaiah, when brought before God, saw how unworthy he truly was when compared to our Holy and Majestic God.ย ย My friends, itโ€™s not until we realize we are just as unclean can the clean-up truly begin.

When we do, so many of us start working really, really hard at getting “cleaned up.”ย ย We clean and we clean.ย ย And like Lady Macbeth we cry out, โ€œโ€œHereโ€™s yet a spot,โ€ she cries, desperately rubbing. โ€œHereโ€™s the small drop of blood still.โ€โ€ย ย Her sin caused such guilt and shame she sleepwalks constantly washing her hands.ย

Oh, we may fool ourselves into thinking how much better we are for having gone (or thought about going) to church a few times, or even regularly.ย ย In fact, our piousness may ooze out of our pores.ย ย We give to the right causes (just enough not to hurt) and are righteously offended by otherโ€™s not-so-godly behavior.ย ย We volunteer (or at least we want to) and we wear our symbols of our faith.ย ย But still that spot wonโ€™t come out.

โ€œOr do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? .... But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.โ€ 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

If you recall my first post, โ€œThe Coat of the Holy Spiritโ€ I wrote about three phases of sanctification:

  1. You were sanctified (Justification)
  2. You are being sanctified (Sanctification or Made Holy)
  3. You will be sanctified (Glorification)

Of these, which are you to keep scrubbing away to get those spots out?ย ย This is, of course, a trick question. It’s all Him, not you. All He asks is for you to listen, trust and obey His Word.

So how have we been sanctified?ย ย By the sacrificial blood of Jesus Christ.ย ย He chose you before time began.ย ย Only the blood of Christ satisfies the requirement God has to give the guilty mercy and grace.ย ย Remember, we are ALL sinners.ย ย We all deserve death and eternal separation from the Most Holy God.ย ย The gift of Christ was given freely because โ€œGod so loved the worldโ€ฆโ€ John 3:16.

โ€œBut we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as first fruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.โ€ 2 Thessalonians 2:13ย ย

You are being sanctified right now, even by reading this post!ย ย You are gaining wisdom (I hope), which was given by Christ to the disciples — to generations since, to me, pastors, teachers, fellow believers — imparted to you!ย ย The Holy Spirit, imputed to you by Christ, is living inside you opening your heart, your mind, your eyes and ears to Godโ€™s Word and promises.ย ย

โ€œIn his great mercyย he has given us new birthย into a living hopeย through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,ย and into an inheritanceย that can never perish, spoil or fade.โ€ย 1 Peter 1:3

Lastly, you will be sanctified when we see Christ again and rise from the dead, fully healed, fully restored as God has planned since creation.  How beautiful is that?  A gift from our Creator to those who simply believe.

So, who is responsible for making us holy?ย ย The short answer is always Jesus.ย ย When we love Him, we desperately want to obey Him, to please Him with our love.ย

Thank you, LORD, for doing the work for us.ย ย For not having us make endless, pointless sacrifices to try and wash the spots off our souls.ย ย For being the only True God who loves us so much that He died for us.ย ย No other man-made gods have done the same.ย ย That is love.ย ย And for that we can be eternally grateful.ย ย Amen

And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplateย the Lordโ€™s glory, are being transformed into his imageย with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.ย 2 Corinthians 3:18

This weekโ€™s question: Do you struggle with the word โ€œobedience?โ€ย ย Why do you think God calls us to obedience to Him?

Lord, I Cry Out For Mercy

She was rarely โ€œlate.โ€  With each passing day she began to worry more.  She and her boyfriend knew better but they were young, just 15 and 16.  They frequently met up for sex while his mother was at work.  And they didnโ€™t use protection.  So, five days after she shouldโ€™ve started her period, she found herself sitting on the toilet, with a small Tupperware bowl waiting to catch her urine.  She had never been to a clinic before and had called to see if they could do a pregnancy test.  As she sat there, she prayed.  She wasnโ€™t a church-goer.  In fact, her parents never spoke of God.  Yet she regularly was moved to pray.  She didnโ€™t know what it meant to trust God or receive justification through faith in Jesus.  She just knew she needed to pray.  She had prayed for a lot of things over the years.  For her mom to stop hitting her.  For her dad to speak to her.  For her brother to stop tormenting her.  She didnโ€™t know if God was listening but she kept praying.

As she sat there praying for mercy โ€“ because thatโ€™s what would have to happen โ€“ she swore she would change her ways.ย ย She made empty promises, begging to not be pregnant. And just as she began to capture a sample, her period started.ย ย God had not only granted her mercy but also mercy on her potential child.ย ย For had she been pregnant she most assuredly would have aborted it.

That girl was me.ย ย I didnโ€™t deserve His mercy.ย ย I was living in sin, regularly.ย ย I created my own set of rules โ€“ a false sense of โ€œrighteousness.โ€ย ย I deserved the punishment.ย ย I deserved to have to face a difficult choice and live with it for the rest of my life.ย ย But He showed mercy.ย ย Iโ€™ve remembered that day for the past 39 years like it was yesterday.ย ย But how many times have I failed to show others that same mercy?

โ€œSpeak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgement without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful.ย ย Mercy triumphs over judgement.โ€

James 2:12-13

I was recently listening to a podcast by Joyce Meyer.  She spoke about not being mediocre.  Mediocre is halfway between being a failure and being successful.  The work of not being mediocre is constantly seeking knowledge, constantly improving ourselves.  So, the other day I set about creating a Christian definitions list. We sit in church, listen to podcasts, read devotionals but how many times do we hear buzz words or theology that we just donโ€™t grasp?  Hereโ€™s my starting list:

Righteousness: our outward appearance of Godโ€™s truth.ย ย Our actions and our words.ย ย Itโ€™s important to note that without the ingredient of Godโ€™s truth we create a โ€œfalse, man-made righteousness.โ€ (2Tim 3:16)

Sanctification: the process by which the Holy Spirit molds us into Jesusโ€™ image (1Thes 4:1)

Justification: when we pronounce our faith in Jesus Christ and we are instantly saved. (Gal 2:16)

Grace: simply put, Godโ€™s favor and kindness towards us.ย And He shows us grace in different ways:

  1. Salvation Grace: is when our freedom was purchased through Jesusโ€™ blood (Eph 2:8)
  2. Numerous Grace: God forgives me each time I sin (Rom 6:14)
  3. Forgiveness Grace: When God helps me to forgive others (James 4:6)
  4. New Grace: each day I have the opportunity to begin again (Heb 13:25)
  5. Freedom Grace: I am free to forget about other peopleโ€™s opinions and just be me (1Cor 15:10)
  6. Future Grace: God has promised to be with me at all times (Heb 4:16)

Mercy: when we are not given the punishment we deserve. (PS 40:11-13)

When I wrote all this down I received clarity of the amazing work God, through His Holy Spirit,ย ย does in each of us.ย ย But most of all I thought about mercy.ย ย I understood that God forgives us each time we fall into the traps of sin.ย ย We all have been in the situation Paul lamented when he wrote the following:

Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.ย ย For in my inner being I delight in Godโ€™s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me.ย ย What a wretched man I am!ย

Romans 7:21-24

Each and every day we find ourselves sinning โ€“ worried about money, hoarding our gifts, being judgmental and unkind to others, unforgiving of our loved ones or even strangers.ย ย Gossiping, stealing, or even hating or causing injury to others.ย ย There is only one being to have ever walked this earth that didnโ€™t need Godโ€™s grace, forgiveness and mercy โ€“ Jesus.

Charles Spurgeon wrote in his prayer โ€œDeliver Us From Evil about mercy.

โ€œWe come for mercy, great God.ย ย It must always be our first request, for we have sinned against a just and holy law of which our consciences approve.ย ย We are evil, but Your law is holy and just and good.ย ย We have offended knowingly.โ€

Charles Spurgeon

I knew having sex outside of marriage was wrong.ย ย I knew having unprotected sex outside of marriage was stupid.ย ย And yet I did it time after time.ย ย God gifted me with mercy over and over.ย ย He also gifted me with mercy when He delivered the right man to me to become my husband.ย ย I didnโ€™t deserve him.ย ย I was a mess.ย ย After 31 years of marriage I still thank God my husband has stuck with me as I erase the ways I learned while outside of Godโ€™s justification. And I know now, itโ€™s time for me to pick up my part of the bargain.

Blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy.

Matthew 5:7

Iโ€™m grateful that God flipped this admonition.ย ย He has done it with so many of us.ย ย He has shown us the mercy we didnโ€™t deserve.ย ย We need to pass that glorious gift along to others.ย ย There are those in our lives that we hope to fail, that we wish ill will, that we hope will โ€œget their just due.โ€ย ย Arenโ€™t we thankful that God doesnโ€™t think the same about us?

For about two years I worked as a substitute in a high school office.  I job-shared for a woman who was completing her counseling certification.  There were two positions like mine.  When the other position was filled with a young woman I was encouraged by her enthusiasm.  She was full of ideas and brought a cheery face to the job.  And then she started being late every day.  At times she wouldnโ€™t even show up.  When she did show up, I would find her on Facebook or on personal phone calls.  Her failings impacted my job.  I became bitter because, hey, I was just a substitute.  Why should I have to make up for her issues when she was an actual employee?  I found myself driving to work dreading what was to come.  I actually prayed she would get hit by a bus so I wouldnโ€™t have to deal with her anymore.  Yes, I did that.

The turmoil got so bad I considered quitting.ย ย But I knew that would leave others, whom I considered friends, in a difficult situation.ย ย Three months in, I sat at an intersection on the way to work.ย ย It was a long red light.ย ย The Holy Spirit descended on me in the car.ย ย I had my Perspective Change Moment.ย ย What I should have been doing all along was praying for God to intervene positively in her life.ย ย I could have left her to do two peopleโ€™s jobs and/or complain endlessly to the supervisor, but I needed to show mercy and love.ย ย So, I prayed every day for the next week that God would resolve the problem.ย ย For God to help her.ย ย For God to take control.ย ย The peace that came over me was amazing!

After that one week she resigned.ย ย And a good friend of mine who had been a finalist for the job previously was hired.ย ย God is good.ย ย God is forgiving.ย ย God, thankfully, is merciful.ย ย ย I love this quote by Christopher Columbus about mercy:

I am a most noteworthy sinner, but I have cried out to the Lord for grace and mercy, and they have covered me completely.ย ย I have found the sweetest consolation since I made it my whole purpose to enjoy His marvelous presence.

To whom do you need to show mercy?ย ย How has God been merciful to you?
