Pessimist or Pollyanna?

I have told you this so that
my joy may be in you and that
your joy may be complete.
John 15:11

A prayer to live a joy-filled life.

Gracious God your gifts and blessing to me cannot be counted.  And yet so often I turn to the negative parts in my life and place my constant thoughts in them.  When I rise I forget to be thankful that I have yet another day in which to serve you and be blessed by you.  And as I go about my day when you place joyful moments at my fingertips I take them for granted.   When I lay my head down to sleep I can easily recall all that went wrong in the day rather than what went right.  But your joy is there for the taking.  I want to live basked in your greatness, your beauty and your joy.  I can and will, with your help, find joy in every circumstance.  You are working for my good at all times and I just need to remember that promise.  Thank you for giving us your Son who implanted the Holy Spirit in us โ€“ a spirit of joy and of goodness.  I pray this in your Sonโ€™s Holy name, Jesus.  Amen

I always called her a Pollyanna.  The term comes from the movie of the same name in which a young girl arrives at a small town filled with bitter people.  But her neverending, cheerful spirit wins them over.  Nowadays, a โ€œPollyannaโ€ seems to be said as a negative.  That, along with wearing โ€œrose-colored glassesโ€ are attributed to people who just want to see the positives in everything.  I know, makes you sick, doesnโ€™t it?

But my mother-in-law truly is such a person.  And this last year that cheerful, joy-filled spirit was truly tested, not only with all the lockdowns but with a diagnosis of cancer.  On her worst days she was a bit dispirited.  Yes, worst days.  I mean the woman seemed to look forward to her cancer treatments because she would probably run into a friend and chat for hours while the poison did its deadly work.

A cheerful heart is good medicine,
but a crushed spirit dries up
the bones.
Proverbs 17:22

At times being a โ€œbit dispiritedโ€ can seem like my best day.  Iโ€™ve been a well-trained, tried and true pessimist for so long that the concept of daily joy is a lot of work for me to achieve.  Itโ€™s easy to sit back and marinate in the mess of life.  It takes work to get up, dust ourselves off and say โ€œoh well letโ€™s make the best of this.โ€

Thank goodness our strength comes from the LORD.  Iโ€™m committing myself to stopping negative thinking and instead, like playing a game of โ€œWhereโ€™s Waldo,โ€ searching for the joy in the moments of my life.  I know they are there because joy is one of the promised fruits of His spirit.

He’s there somewhere! Just keep searching!

I stood in Walmart the other day waiting in a long line to check out.  Normally, Iโ€™d be mentally lopping off all the heads of the cashiers for taking so long and planning my complaint letter to management for not opening more registers.  Instead, I settled in to Godโ€™s joy.  I was happy to have found all the items on my long list and the people watching at Walmart is topnotch!  I was so bathed in Godโ€™s joy that I even let someone with only two items go in front of me.

I could have turned a simple shopping trip into a miserable experience very easily.  Iโ€™m counting on God to keep giving me opportunities to flip the script from pessimist to Pollyanna.  Because when the day comes when I need it most, I want to be well-trained and tested in living a joy-filled life.

If you want this too, add the prayer to your daily prayer list and watch and see how God works in your life!

Faithful Healing

I have seen their ways,
but I will heal them;
I will guide them and
restore comfort to
Israelโ€™s mourners.
Isaiah 57:18

In our lives we all have had instances of brokenness, despair and desolation. Those times when we feel we are on our last leg, at the end of the rope about to lose our grip and fall on our last gasping breath before we give up and begin to drown.

Where we go from that point and what we do next speaks volumes about your current state of faith.

Do we lash out and blame those around us and our circumstances for the state of our woundedness? Or do we reach down into our inner core and summon the power of Godโ€™s promise to deliver us to a better place?

What I have learned about myself from facing trials in the workplace is that my faith, when strong, protects me with an armor of perspective. When I am weak and not connected with my faith, I am vulnerable to believe false accusations and claims of harm and wrongdoing. I recognize it, I know the feeling and know the damage it can do if I accept and embrace the crushing doubt.

When we are hurt we can reach in or reach out to God

What my defense mechanism triggers is a quick accounting of the facts: what do I have control of and what do I not have control of? Next, I better get right with God and do it quick. I remind myself — I am not in control, He is. Then and only then can I respond and act. Any other process, for me, is futile and ineffective.

One of my favorite scripture verses I lean on in times of introspection and self-assessment is this one:

And which of you by worrying
can add a single hour to his
lifeโ€™s span?
Luke 12:15

Uhhhh, guilty!

And if I am on my game and thinking clearly my first response is to slow everything down and pray. Asking for discernment, clarity, and focus surprisingly works like a gem. Once we slow our racing mind, cool our sweaty brow and take control of our breathing in an effort to focus on who is in controls then the problems diminish, and the solutions come into clearer perspective.

God is that lens of clarity we all need. We are many times our own problem. But as Jesus promises, we –as in me and Jesus together– are the solution. โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid; just believeโ€- Luke 8:50

He said to her, โ€œDaughter,
your faith has healed you.
Go in peace and be freed
from your suffering.โ€
Mark 5:34

Time after time in scripture Jesus proved and made examples of the power of healing through faith in the Lord. Jesus was the conduit, but faith was the pathway to the healing and rebirth.

Then your light will break
forth like the dawn, and your
healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will
go before you, and the glory
of the Lord will be your rear
guard.
Isaiah 58:8

Itโ€™s a partnership of pulling together. It is not a miraculous anointment from heaven, a surprise cleansing. It takes suffering, acknowledgement, surrender and faith.

Together, bound by faith and confidence, we are everything and anything we want to be. Alone, divided and broken we are only a sum of the remaining pieces–weakened by trial and doubt.

We all can heal, but only if our belief in the Lord is strong and steadfast.

The Addition of Peace

The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears
    from all faces;
he will remove his peopleโ€™s disgrace
    from all the earth.
The Lord has spoken.
Isaiah 25:8

As I write this, we are only a few weeks away from Christmas.  Around this time, we frequently see the phrase, โ€œPeace on Earth!โ€  But like so many popularized snippets in the Bible the meaning can be confused when interpreted from a worldly point of view.  โ€œPeaceโ€ so often means a lack of something โ€“ strife, war, noise, chaos.  But in Godโ€™s universe, it is an addition of something.

The misconstrued meaning of God’s peace

Having grown up in San Diego I had the fortunate experience of learning to sail.  As a Girl Scout, I started out in small, one-man sabots.  Eventually, I became skilled at sailing catamarans and larger sloops.  Iโ€™ve even been a crew member on an old sailing ship which sailed the 31 miles from Long Beach Harbor across the ocean to Santa Catalina Island.  What an amazing trip!  On many of those sailboats youโ€™ll find whatโ€™s called a set of lifelines.  They run from stem to stern along the edge of the boat.  Its purpose? To be used as a last chance handhold before plunging into the water.

Thatโ€™s how I see Godโ€™s peace brought into our world and more specifically my life. Peace, as brought about by the coming of Jesus, is not the lack of something, itโ€™s the addition of our new lifeline. God promises throughout the Old Testament that He will send His messenger to wipe way our tears and to bring us salvation. And when Jesus arrived, so many people misunderstood His purpose. It was not to become an earthly king and conquer all our physical adversaries. He came to teach us that His ways are higher and His love for us so great. You see God doesnโ€™t always want to change our circumstances, but He always seeks to change us. When we study how Jesus handled strife and chaos and follow in His ways we live in peace.

Peace I leave with you;
my peace I give you.
I do not give to you as
the world gives. Do not
let your hearts be troubled
and do not be afraid.
John 14:27

This bringing of His Peace โ€“ the incarnation of Jesus โ€“ was more clearly defined for me this year.  About 11 months ago, my mother-in-law was diagnosed with uterine cancer.  I love my mother-in-law as my own mom.  She has taught me so much about Jesus and His ways.  She has shown me grace when I didnโ€™t deserve it.  She has provided a warm and loving place for me to land when life has been too much.  I had been praying fervently for a more positive diagnosis.

So that day, I went for a long walk through our nearby, secluded canyons and yelled out loud at God.  Yes, I yelled at the Almighty.  I pleaded with Him to not take her from me yet.  My heart, mind and soul were the opposite of peace.  And like the boat lifeline, He suddenly placed Himself between me and going off the deep end.  His Holy Spirit stood square in front of me and reminded me that death is not the end.  He showed me that when the day comes for my beloved mother-in-law to leave this world it would be a joyous one for her.  You see, she would be reunited with her own mother.  He showed me a picture of the two of them playing their favorite card games, teasing each other, and laughing their heads off.  And it made me smile.  It filled me with joy.

I had accepted Godโ€™s peace.  Thereโ€™s the covenant agreement.  He sent His Peace On Earth in the form of His Son.  And I accepted it.  I frequently try giving it back, but less and less as I place my trust more firmly in Him.

This year of 2020 had been very difficult for many.  As a Christian I have grasped a hold of Godโ€™s lifeline so often to stay in His peace.  Itโ€™s important for us to remember that God wants us to live in today, not yesterday or tomorrow.  So, when we dream blissfully about how much better 2021 โ€œjust has to be,โ€ we make the mistake of missing out on how good God can be for us right now.  We miss out on the opportunity to live in His peace.

There has never been a year in the history of the world, after Eden, where there was not disease, strife, war, death and pain.  And 2021 will be no different.  But Godโ€™s promised peace is our lifeline.  It will guard our hearts and minds.  No matter the dark seas on either side, we can rest in the knowledge of His love and our eternal salvation.

Grip The Promised Path

And a highway will be there;
    it will be called the Way of Holiness;
    it will be for those who walk on that Way.
The unclean will not journey on it;
    wicked fools will not go about on it.
No lion will be there,
    nor any ravenous beast;
    they will not be found there.
But only the redeemed will walk there,
and those the Lord has rescued will return.
They will enter Zion with singing;
    everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy will overtake them,
    and sorrow and sighing will flee away.
Isaiah 35:8-10

For many years my favorite vacation was to travel to San Francisco and hitch rides on the cable cars.  I can still remember the smell they make when the cable operator would grip the underground cable and off weโ€™d go!  We would hop on and off at various famous stops and drink in the beautiful vistas of the bay.  But did you know that unlike its counterparts, the trolleys, cable cars donโ€™t have motors?

The San Francisco cable car system is made up of miles and miles of undergound cables which all intersect at the large cable car powerhouse.  There you will find giant wheels operating the cables.  Each cable car has a grip which clamps down on the moving cable.  Itโ€™s the cable itself which moves each car.  When a cable car needs to stop it releases the cable and applies its wheel brakes.  Without the constantly moving cable, the cars are motionless.

Iโ€™m fascinated with how so many everyday activities in our lives reflect our relationship with God and His Holy promises.  Without Him operating without ceasing, keeping our lives safely along His chosen path for us, we can so easily find ourselves stuck, a cable car without power.

A good friend of mine and I were out walking one day and we were discussing how easy it is to lose our grip of Godโ€™s promises.  We get so distracted by the fears, anxieties and paths the world puts on us.  The things we โ€œshould doโ€ because the world expects it from us.  But lately Iโ€™ve decided I need to be like the cable car operator โ€“ pulling back on that long lever and gripping the life-giving cable of God.  And gripping it tightly.

As so many people know San Francisco is also famous for itโ€™s steep hills.  And the cable car operators find many challenges in navigating those hills.  They need to know exactly when to grip at the right amount in order to make it up the hill or else they must release the cable and slide backwards to try it again.  And on the downward slope they need to apply the right pressure on the cable while using their wheel brakes.  Each operator must become an expert, not only about the cable car operation, but the individual pitfalls of each hill.

And like those operators, as Christians, we need to be as well versed on the character and promises of God.  He promises to lay out a clear path for us.  We need to place our full effort and attention on Him and that path.  His path doesnโ€™t remove us from the dangers of the hills and valleys, rather He helps us to weave our way up and around and down them.

I have given them Your word;
and the world has hated them
because they are not of the world,
just as I am not of the world.
I do not pray that You should take
them out of the world, but that
You should keep them from the
evil one.
They are not of the world,
just as I am not of the world.
John 17:14-16

When we wrestle with God, at best, or at our worst completely ignore Him, we will find ourselves stuck at the bottom of our great hills.  Or, plunging recklessly toward the bottom.  The โ€œhighway is thereโ€ for us.  It is the way of His righteousness.

A cable car operator who cannot successfully operate his car, and therefore protect his or her passengers, no longer has the privilege of that esteemed and famous job.  And when we refuse to pay attention to the promised path which God provides for us and grip a hold of it, we miss out on the joy and gladness.  The covenant of a promised path requires us to study His Word and hold fast to it.

Cable car cable grip

In reading up about cable cars also discovered that all the miles of cable have a โ€œsacrificial lubricantโ€ that allows the grip to not wear down the cable itself.  The lubricant wears away similar to a pencil eraser wearing down, rather than the paper itโ€™s being used on.  Itโ€™s that burning lubricant that gives the San Francisco cable cars itโ€™s unique and memorable smell.

Jesus is our โ€œsacrificial lubricant.โ€  He ripped the curtain away and opened up our direct communication with God.  He sent the Holy Spirit to walk with us at every moment.  His teachings, when gripped, help us to live on the promised path set out for us.

A Promised Foundation

The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high;

    he will fill Zion with his justice and righteousness.

He will be the sure foundation for your times,

    a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge;

    the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure.

Isaiah 33:5-6

I donโ€™t know about you but I sure can use some stability this year.  As a child my life, viewed from the outside, looked very stable.  My parents were married, we had a nice home, two kids, dogs, cats, a little garden in the backyard.  I was a Girl Scout and did well in school.  And I felt so alone.

I blamed all my family problems on moving from the Los Angeles area down to San Diego when I was in 4thgrade.  Everything seemed to change.  My mom was extremely unhappy and angry so often and my father rarely spoke.  My brother was fast approaching a time when the hidden timebomb of a manic-depressive disorder would take over his life.  My parents werenโ€™t what you might call a โ€œteam.โ€  Having the benefit of hindsight, I realize now it had nothing to do with the move and everything to do with a lack of a solid rock within our family unit.

Not being raised in a Christian (or any faith) environment I found myself searching for stability through my parents and then friends and boyfriends.  As my motherโ€™s own mental health issues began coinciding with my brotherโ€™s, the atmosphere around my house became so volatile so I searched for peace and love through insecure friendships and lopsided romantic relationships.  This led to competitive relationships and risky sexual behavior.   All the while I longed for a firm foundation to set my hopes, my fears, and my need to find joy.

Thankfully, through God and a wonderful husband, I have found that “sure foundation,” as written by the prophet Isaiah.  The promise God makes in this passage is that He is our solid rock, He is the stability for which we all yearn.  He is the same today as he was yesterday.  And He will be the same tomorrow.  Thereโ€™s no rug pulled out from under us.  Thereโ€™s no switching of loyalties.  Thereโ€™s no character flaw that suddenly comes to light and bites us.  He is perfect.  He is solid.  He is the โ€œrich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge.โ€

Lest we miss the agreement part of this promise let me remind you of the last sentence of Isaiah 33:5-6: โ€œThe fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure.โ€  Thereโ€™s that other half of the covenant.  Our part in this relationship requires us to exalt God and respect His place in the universe.  He is God and we are not.  And when we try to place others above Him, they will surely crumble, at some point.

I was reading today about an astronautโ€™s โ€œlifeline.โ€  NASA (the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration) considers there to be two lifeline systems for astronauts:

โ€œFrom lift off through landing, the astronauts aboard the Shuttle along with the thousands of people supporting the flight on Earth depend on NASAโ€™s team of experts to manage this complex communication system. Maintaining good communications is critical.  The lifeline is comprised of two systems โ€“ a ground-based network composed of communication stations, and a space network operating orbiting satellites. As the Shuttle orbits the Earth, the NASA team monitors and continually adjusts the communication pathways to ensure that command, tracking, telemetry, video, and voice communications are clear and secure. โ€œ

I like that visual โ€“ a large team of incredibly talented people making sure our astronauts in space are able to accomplish their mission goals and come home safely.  As Christians we have our own talented team that makes up our solid rock โ€“ God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

โ€œDo not let your hearts be troubled.
You believe in God; believe also in me.
John 14:1

When we live in constant communication with our Holy team, they can continually monitor our progress, provide a firm foundation, and keep us on the right track โ€“ completing the mission and bringing us safely home.

His Last Amazing Words

If you were to Google โ€œJesusโ€™ last wordsโ€ what you would get is a long list of references to Jesusโ€™ last words on the cross and their meaning.  And while those last words are very important, if we think those were His actual last words recorded in the Bible we miss the amazing glory of who Jesus really is.

โ€œI, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.โ€The Spirit and the bride say, โ€œCome!โ€ And let the one who hears say, โ€œCome!โ€ Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.”

REvelation 22:16-17

Jesus wasnโ€™t just about the physical man here on earth.  He is so much more.  The book of Revelation, written by John, reveals Godโ€™s plans and purposes for His church.  Itโ€™s is the revelation of Jesus.  According to Dr. Merrill Tenney, Jesus is the chief subject of Revelations.  Christ is the exalted priest.  And three times in the last chapter of Revelations Jesus interrupts John with His words.

These last amazing words of Jesus in the Bible are also the last of my commentary on Living Amazed through Jesus.  And appropriately so.  Looking back over all the topics they can all coalesce into two words โ€“ follow Him.  We can thank God, Jesus and His Holy Spirit every single day that the prophesy of Jesusโ€™ return has yet to be fulfilled.  Why?  Because we still have a lot of His work to accomplished.  God is giving us an opportunity to not only get our own lives in line with Jesusโ€™ amazing ways but to also share with as many people as possible about the savior.

These last few words of Jesus should be at the front of every church.  Let anyone who is thirsty come and take the free gift of living water that only He can provide.  He has designed us to be His hands and feet to bring sinners into this amazing grace.

โ€œIndeed, when the church lives in expectancy of Christโ€™s return, such an attitude provokes ministry and evangelism as well as purity of heart.โ€

Warren Wiersbe

As I have grown in my faith, I find it odd that there are โ€œtraditionalโ€ churches and โ€œevangelicalโ€ churches.  Itโ€™s clear in Jesusโ€™ last (and many other teachings) Bible words we are all to take up the mantel of โ€œevangelical.โ€   I was discussing this topic in one of my Bible studies the other night about sharing the gospel with others.  One friend said she doesnโ€™t feel comfortable โ€œopening that doorโ€ with people.  I shared how I am praying every single day for just one believer to โ€œopen that doorโ€ to my eldest daughter.  I know God is asking me to be a good example for her but I also know He is seeking someone else to bring her to Christ.

Arenโ€™t there numerous people in your life that you hope would accept Jesus as their savior?  Itโ€™s hypocritical of us to pray for a miracle in someoneโ€™s life if we arenโ€™t willing to be that miracle.

Of all the amazing things Jesus said and did throughout the Bible He was always clear on our role in Godโ€™s Kingdom.  We are to help gather up as many as possible and place them solidly in His hands.  Our job has never been to sit nicely in church, enjoy a few songs and hear a good speech.  Itโ€™s to be compelled to share His amazing love with the world.

Thank you for joining Madison and me on this journey through Living Amazed.  Please join me starting December 7 for my next series, โ€œHold the Line: 25 Promises of God.โ€

His Amazing Word

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1

This week, on one of the Instagram accounts I follow, the site owner posed the question: What good thing happened to you this year?  She added, โ€œLetโ€™s spread some gratitude vibes.โ€  My answer? That my faith has gotten so much more in-depth and stronger.  Amazing, given whatโ€™s all happened in 2020.   I no longer have a home church.  In fact, I havenโ€™t been to church since the last weekend of February.  When I questioned my church closing indefinitely, I was met with some pretty nasty responses.  And when I asked to be removed from the rolls I received an email from the assistant pastor with a polite version of โ€œdonโ€™t let the door hit you on the way out.โ€

So, itโ€™s pretty amazing that without a body of faithful Christians to help in my growth that I am where I am today.ย ย

When I looked over this weekโ€™s post by Madison and myself, I realized that my growth was reflected in the lessons.  The acceptance of Godโ€™s amazing interruptions โ€“ knowing He works all things for my good.  The acknowledgement of His amazing authority over all situations โ€“ yes, even the ones that donโ€™t seem to make any sense.  The proof that He loves me by reading the Book of John.  And how much my picture of Jesus has changed these last few months โ€“ from a historical figure to a spirit that lives inside me.

My devotional this week had a day titled, โ€œWhat to do when trouble comes.โ€  Itโ€™s based on 1 Timothy 6:17 which states, โ€œFight the good fight of the faith.โ€  It went on to say that trouble is a part of life, so we simply have to be ready for it. (Joyce Meyer, New Day, New You).  A friend told me the other day she wishes she could just fast forward to 2022.  My response? โ€œWhy? There might be a nuclear fallout that year.  So, you might as well find joy in today.โ€

How do we, as Christians, get prepared?ย ย How do we build up our amazing faith muscle for that day when trouble comes, because it most certainly will?ย ย And looking at this weekโ€™s blog posts the answer is clear โ€“ steeping ourselves in Godโ€™s Holy Word.ย ย

I find myself extremely blessed to have started a small Bible study group โ€“ theyโ€™re my BSGs (Bible study girls) โ€“ back in January.ย ย I was encouraged by one of the members to re-start a study group.ย ย On an urging by the Holy Spirit, I invited two other women from my gym. They eagerly said yes.ย ย So, the four of us embarked on a journey we had no idea would be an anchor for us this year.ย ย We started out with easy faith muscles and moved up to weightier topics.ย ย These three women became my church.ย ย My amazing sisters in Christ.ย ย It wasnโ€™t just about having women that wanted to get together.ย ย Weโ€™ve put in the work.ย ย Weโ€™ve been diligent in our faith workouts.ย ย Weโ€™ve dug deep not only into His Word but into our own sins.

Iโ€™ve led other Bible studies before.ย ย Thereโ€™s always a few that blow off doing the homework and not take it seriously.ย ย Then thereโ€™s others that arenโ€™t willing to take the opportunity to open themselves up for conviction.ย ย If we truly want to know Godโ€™s character, not ours, and Godโ€™s will, not ours, we need to use His Divine Word as our touchstone.ย ย The world longs to cheat us out of the true, amazing, love God has for us.ย ย The world plays a shell game with morality.ย ย If we want to grab on to the more than 5,000 promises God makes in the Bible then we need to treat it seriously.

Did you need to re-read that last sentence? More than 5,000 promises.ย ย How many of them do you know?ย ย How many of them have you taken to heart?ย ย Those amazing promises are sitting right there in that book.ย ย

Jesus asked, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

Matthew 9:28

Letโ€™s be a church together and dive deep into those promises.ย ย Letโ€™s be a church together that accepts His interruptions with joy and peace.ย ย Letโ€™s be a church together that places His authority over everything in our lives.ย ย Letโ€™s be a church that needs no other proof of His love for us than our own existence.ย ย Letโ€™s be a church together that sees Jesus for who He is โ€“ our Lord and Savior who loves us and wants for us to live apart from what the world throws at us.ย ย Today we can open up His Word and find joy right there on its pages.

His Amazing Identity

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

Every year Jesusโ€™ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.ย When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.ย ย After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.ย When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.ย After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.ย Everyone who heard him was amazedย at his understanding and his answers.ย When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His motherย said to him, โ€œSon, why have you treated us like this? Your fatherย and I have been anxiously searching for you.โ€

โ€œWhy were you searching for me?โ€ย he asked.ย โ€œDidnโ€™t you know I had to be in my Fatherโ€™s house?โ€ But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

Luke 2:41-50

Who have you believed Jesus to be?ย

The world has so many depictions of what Jesus โ€œlooks like.โ€ White Jesus, Black Jesus, Buddha Jesus, Italian Jesus — it seems as though everyone has taken their idea of Jesus and made it reflect their own image. This practice is a dishonoring habit by churches everywhere who spend so much time painting Jesus to reflect their faces, instead of painting themselves to look more like Jesus.

No matter where you are at in your walk with Christ, I think itโ€™s safe to say weโ€™ve all had different perspectives of who Jesus is. For me, Iโ€™ve always thought of him as a Mediterranean- looking trim man with brown flowy locks. I can thank several movies and documentaries for that image. Iโ€™ve also thought of him as Godโ€™s Son who sits on a seat lower than God, answers to His requests and working as the hands and feet of Godโ€™s Kingdom — another misconception that again, devalues the full power and glory of Christ. Why? Because Jesus isnโ€™t less than God or inferior. Jesus is God as a part of the Trinity. Three-in-One, Father, Spirit, Son. Jesus sits at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19) and was present at creation (Genesis 1:26).ย

See, here in Luke 2, Jesusโ€™ parents knew he was a seed planted in Mary by God, but they still couldnโ€™t wrap their heads around what that really meant. When they lost Jesus in the crowds in Jerusalem, they searched tirelessly for Him everywhere but one place โ€“ the temple. If they truly understood who Jesus was, that wouldโ€™ve been the first place they looked. But to them, all they could see was their young son who was just a little boy. Where could he possibly have gone? Once found, they wereย amazedย at what they were seeing. That same little boy was teaching/preaching in the temple courts,ย communing with His Father.ย

Duh, where else would He be?ย

I challenge you to ask yourself this: What lies/misconceptions/myths are you believing about Jesus? And how are those misconceptions hindering you from being truly amazed by his power and presence in your life? Amazing Authority

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit

Then he went down to Capernaum,ย a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. They were amazed at his teaching,ย because his words had authority.

ย In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,ย โ€œGo away! What do you want with us,Jesus of Nazareth?ย Have you come to destroy us? I know who you areโ€”the Holy One of God!โ€

ย โ€œBe quiet!โ€ย Jesus said sternly.ย โ€œCome out of him!โ€Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

All the people were amazedย and said to each other, โ€œWhat words these are! With authorityย and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!โ€ย 37ย And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.

Luke 4:31-37

I always like to imagine what it would have been like to be in Jesusโ€™ presence on earth. To hear his voice and feel the power that flowed from His fingertips.ย

Throughout Jesusโ€™ time on earth, we see many instances where he is able to command an entire crowd, heal someone with simply a few words and cast out demons just with his presence. There is no doubt that being in the presence of Jesus meant feeling an indescribable authority. As described in Luke 4:32, it says that His word โ€œpossessed authority.โ€ Those listening didnโ€™t quite know why or how โ€“ but they knew that He had a level of authority that was bigger than themselves, bigger than even the Chief Priests they bowed down to.ย

Recognizing Jesusโ€™ amazing authority is pivotal for us. Itโ€™s pivotal when we read scripture, its critical when we pray, and itโ€™s important to remember when we find ourselves with a tight grip around the so-called โ€œhandlesโ€ of our life we think we have. Jesusโ€™ authority trumps all. The Lordโ€™s Word trumps all. The authority that Jesus spoke with here in Luke 4 was noticeable to the crowds because it was the mighty power of God that was flowing through Him, touching the deepest parts of each individual’s hearts and souls.ย

But I want you to know that the Son of Manย has authority on earth to forgive sins.โ€ย So he said to the paralyzed man,ย โ€œGet up, take your mat and go home.โ€ย Then the man got up and went home.

Matthew 9:6-7

When we read Godโ€™s Word, we mustnโ€™t forget that it still โ€“ and always will โ€“ possesses the same level of authority that Jesus spoke with that day in Capernaum. When He says โ€œlove your enemy,โ€ He commands that with authority. When He says โ€œblessed are those who are persecuted,โ€ He speaks that with authority. And when He says โ€œyou must lose your life before you gain it,โ€ He means it.ย

โ€œCome, follow me,โ€ย Jesus said,ย โ€œand I will send you out to fish for people.โ€ย At once they left their nets and followed him.

Mark 1:17-18

All Jesus needed to do was extend a hand and Peter dropped his nets and abandoned everything to follow Him. His presence commanded authority and His voice was one of love, grace and comfort. Authority doesnโ€™t have to mean โ€œdictatorshipโ€ โ€“ it can also mean trusting, strong, stable and yes, comforting.ย

God wants to have amazing authority in your life because He wants to relieve you of the control, the worry, the anxiety and stress in which you toil. He wants to be the guiding light, the north star and compass that shows you which way is right. And when we give God total authority in our lives He does indeed show up in mighty ways. He takes control and leads us down paths we never thought we could venture down. His authority is the greatest thing that is available to everyone and anyone โ€“ all we have to do it trust him with our lives.

I donโ€™t know about you, but I am often relieved when I remember that itโ€™s King Jesus on the throne and not myself, not someone else, not idols or things. King Jesus is in control, and Iโ€™ve never felt more content in that truth โ€“ no matter what may come my way.ย

The very word “authority” has within it the word “author. ” An author is someone who creates and possesses a particular work. Insofar as God is the foundation of all authority, He exercises that foundation because He is the author and the owner ofย His creation. He is the foundation upon which all other authority stands or falls.

Amazingly Interrupted

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,ย the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.ย He saw at the waterโ€™s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.ย He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,ย โ€œPut out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.โ€

Simon answered, โ€œMaster,ย weโ€™ve worked hard all night and havenโ€™t caught anything.ย But because you say so, I will let down the nets.โ€

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.ย So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesusโ€™ knees and said, โ€œGo away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!โ€ย  For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,ย and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simonโ€™s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon,ย โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid;ย from now on you will fish for people.โ€ย So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Luke 5:1-11

I think a lot of us feel like 2020 has been one giant interruption in our lives.ย ย We had beautiful weddings planned, vacations to experience, new jobs on the horizon, a blossoming business, a full retirement schedule.ย ย And then February descended upon us.ย ย To put it mildly itโ€™s been one giant cluster.ย ย Recently, I saw an Instagram post by the Christian womenโ€™s group Proverbs 31 that addressed our need to rely on God during these tough times.ย ย One of the commentors posted a very distraught list of what she has been dealing with, including the loss of a loved one.ย ย She said she was having a hard time seeing God in the middle of everything.ย ย And yet He is right there if we truly know His character.ย ย Heโ€™s the one interrupting our plans.

In the verses today Simon, an experienced fisherman, had just pulled his boat in after a long, hard, unsuccessful day of fishing.  He sat and listened to Jesus as he preached to the masses on the shore.  Suddenly, Jesus asks for a ride out away from the shore to better speak to everyone.  Iโ€™m sure Simon had a mix of emotions.  Here he was, probably dead tired but still might have been honored to have the famous rabbi use his boat.  And then Jesus really interrupted his plans to get home, have dinner and finally get some sleep.  The experienced fisherman was quite sure that another few hours out on the lake would produce nothing โ€“ he should know heโ€™d been a fisherman on that lake all his life.  Jesus wasnโ€™t even from a fishing family!  But something about the rabbi made Simon comply.  And as the story finishes, we see Simon and the other fisherman completely interrupting everything about their lives and deciding to become disciples.

God frequently tries to interrupt our โ€œbright ideasโ€ and โ€œbest laid plans.โ€ย ย The question for us is when we hear or feel His Holy Spirit urging us to take a new direction are we like Simon, willing to comply?ย ย ย ย Or are we like the rich king, unwilling to give up what we have and know?ย ย So many of us say we want God to speak to us but do we really?ย ย

A couple years ago I was amazingly interrupted by Jesus.ย ย I worked as an administrative substitute in our local school district.ย ย I was very busy.ย ย And I wore that busyness as a badge of honor.ย ย ย I had jobs assigned five days a week.ย ย And then Jesus interrupted me.ย ย He urged me, through a vision, to take specific action each week and feed the homeless for a year.ย ย This was not in my plans.ย ย But it was something I had asked for.ย ย I had been praying for growth in my trust in the Lord.ย ย I kept asking for direction.ย ย Feeding the homeless in our large downtown was never on my radar.ย ย What also wasnโ€™t in my plan was giving up working a few days a week to accomplish Jesusโ€™ vision for me.ย ย It was an amazing interruption.ย

ย

He said, โ€œDo this for me.โ€ย ย And I did.ย ย The lessons I learned during that year were ones that no sermon or Bible study could ever teach me.ย ย My patterns of worry, distrust, control, over-planning, pride, feeling alone, all were tested.ย ย It was never about feeding the homeless.ย ย It was about God finding a way to snap me out of destructive patterns โ€“ interrupting me and re-setting me.

Theย Lordย blessed the latter part of Jobโ€™s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys.ย And he also had seven sons and three daughters.

Job 42:12-13

Iโ€™ve told many people about this experience.ย ย And, at the same time I tell them they should pray for something equally amazing to interrupt their lives.ย ย So many of them either look scared or even voice their fear of such an occurrence.ย ย Thatโ€™s why I ask, โ€œDo you really want to hear from God?โ€ย ย Because I can almost guarantee that what He says to you will be unexpected and will challenge you to interrupt your life.ย ย But like Job whose life was severely interrupted, the amazing blessings you receive will be immeasurable.ย ย God has interrupted my life a few more times since my vision. And each time has brought me closer to Him. I urge you today to pray for interruption.ย ย To pray to do Godโ€™s work.ย ย To pray that He asks to guide your boat out into the open water.
