After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the manโs ears. Then he spitย and touched the manโs tongue.ย He looked up to heavenย and with a deep sighย said to him,ย โEphphatha!โย (which meansย โBe opened!โ).ย At this, the manโs ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.
Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.ย But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it.ย People were overwhelmed with amazement. โHe has done everything well,โ they said. โHe even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.โ
Mark 7:33-37
I love this story. Not just because itโs a bit humorous in nature, I mean cโmon, Jesus didnโt HAVE to spit and touch the manโs tongue to heal him or shout to the heavens to cure his deafness. He could have healed the man with no words and no actions, with just one look. But Jesusโ actions show that He truly knew the hearts of the people. He had seen over and over again just how feeble the people were in their faith. He knew they needed clear evidence that He was who He said He was.ย
Even more amazing than Jesus concealing his immediate power to tend to the hearts of the people is the immediate authority he has over disease. The verses claim that at the sound of His voice, deafness falls and lameness disappears.ย In the face of Jesus, darkness cowers in fear.
Just as this verse reminds us of Jesusโ power over the dominion of darkness, let it also be a reminder that what He speaks will be done. Even more amazing, everything on earth and in heaven bows to His authority, because he is the one who created it all (Gen. 1:1).ย
Jesus told the manโs ears to open and they opened. Jesus told Peter that there would come a day when he would deny him three times โ and that day came. What the Lord spoke in prophesies in the Old Testament came to pass through His Son on the cross.ย
We see over and over again thatย God is a faithful God, who fulfills his promises to His people. Are you trusting in that truth today?ย Be amazed today that God will keep all of the below promises to you, for He is a man of His Word.
Amidst your worry, anxiety and fear, I will give you restโฆ. (Matt. 11:28)
Through my Sonโs wounds on the cross, your brokenness has been redeemed (1 Peter 2:24)
I promise that your trials will produce joy (James 1:2)
I give strength to the weary (Isaiah 40:29)ย
I give wisdom to all those who ask of it. I will provide you everything you need for the situations you are in. (James 1:5)
I promise, that if you resist the devil HE WILL FLEE. (James 4:7)ย
Rest in these truths today. I encourage you to find more on your own. Take time to remember all of the things that have come to pass, the promises that have been fulfilled and ask God today for the strength and faith to believe that what He says, will be done, today, tomorrow and the next.ย
Overhearingย what they said, Jesus told him,ย โDonโt be afraid; just believe.โ
He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.ย When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.ย He went in and said to them,ย โWhy all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.โย But they laughed at him.
After he put them all out, he took the childโs father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.ย He took her by the handย and said to her,ย โTalitha koum!โย (which meansย โLittle girl, I say to you, get up!โ).ย Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old).ย At this they were completely astonished.
Mark 5:36-42
Iโm writing this post on the United Statesโ election day.ย ย When you read it, youโll know much more about who may be the next U.S. president.ย ย ย Thereโs a lot of anxiety and fear swirling around the world right now because of this election.ย ย Unfortunately, so much of it is based on misinformation or downright disinformation.ย ย And a lot of it is designed to create fear and distrust. Whatโs so different for me this presidential election is the peace I have, which is solely due to my trust in God.ย ย I am not afraid; I just believe.
In Markโs retelling of Jesus bringing this young girl back to life he starts out with her father, a leader in the synagogue, coming to a large gathering around Jesus.ย ย He urgently pleaded with Jesus to come and heal his sick daughter.ย ย He believed that just by touching his daughter, Jesus will heal her.ย ย As Jesus walks through the crowds towards the manโs house a woman, who had been bleeding for 12 years, reached out and touched Jesusโ clothes.ย ย She thought:
โIf I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.โ
Mark 5:27
Jesus knew at once that someone had put their faith in him.ย ย He turned to the crowd and asked, โWho touched my clothes?โ (Mark 5:30) Of course, a lot of people had probably touched him because they were all crowding around Him.ย ย We so often want to be โfansโ of Jesus, His groupies.ย ย But how often do we turn to Him in complete and total surrender and ask for His healing power, His peace?ย ย How often do we put limits on His ability to โmake all things work together for our good?โ (Romans 8:28). In fact, the simple act of turning to the crowd, searching for the woman who touched Him, caused the disciples and friends of the girlโs father to be almost annoyed.ย ย He was taking time away from what he โshouldโ have been doing which was healing the girl.ย ย In other words, we think Jesus as all knowing, all powerful and yet in the same breath assume he canโt do all things.ย ย
We should not be so astonished, so amazed that Jesus can, by just being, heal us.ย ย We should not be so astonished that He also chooses to take action in His time.ย ย If we believe and have faith in the truths of the Bible, we must expect that, if Jesus can raise a little girl from the dead, if he can raise Lazarus from being many days dead, then He can handle anything else this world throws at Him.
This knowledge and trust is what has brought me through, not only this election season, but through the unrest brought on by Covid19.ย ย Each time I try and take back my fears and worries I am reminded in my Bible studies and through my amazing Christian relationships that peace can only be fully achieved by placing those fears back in Godโs hands.ย ย A good friend has been completely transformed this year through this same process.ย ย My BSGs (Bible Study Girls) were reflecting today about how few times this friend speaks of โher anxiety” — which she used to wear like a favorite coat.ย ย Imagine that โ with all the mess that is 2020 her anxiety has all but disappeared.ย ย Pretty amazing.ย ย Those trials and tribulations that James writes of have been hammered home this year.
โConsider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.โ
James 1:2-3
Have you taken these โopportunitiesโ of trials to grow in your faith?ย ย To grow closer to God?ย ย To grasp the promise of Jesusโs peace?ย ย Another of my BSGs, who in a difficult trial, begged for Godโs help and felt that peace descend over her.ย ย She described it as a weighted blanket โ warm and calming.ย ย Isnโt that more of what we want rather than living in constant disarray, discombobulation and wailing?ย
So, as I wait for the results of this important election, I use each time my mind wants to lean into worry to instead lean into Jesusโ words โ โDonโt be afraid; just believe.โย ย And His amazing peace never fails to come over me.
The Lord bless me and keep me; the Lord makes his face shine on me and is gracious to me; the Lord turns His face toward me and gives me PEACE.
Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. All the people were astonished and said, โCould this be the Son of David?โBut when the Pharisees heard this, they said, โIt is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.โ Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, โEvery kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
Matthew 12:22-28
I love the part in these verses that states, โJesus knew their thoughts.โ How amazing is it that right now, this very second, Jesus knows your thoughts? He knows the thoughts of believers and non-believers. What would He think about your thoughts right now? Are they focused on the worries surrounding the election in the United States? Are they worried about new virus-related shutdowns? Are your thoughts of your precarious finances or your failing marriage? Or, are they thoughts of how God has come through for you before and today is no different? He has shown the way; he has opened doors before and this issue you face right now can be placed securely in His hands.
The โpeople were astonished and said, โCould this be the Son of David?โโ How often when God paves the way to solutions we might not have ever dreamt, that we even ask the question, โcould this be Jesus?โ Or do we stand firm in single mindedness and state, โThank you Lord.โ? The Pharisees were so afraid of losing their power and control they wanted to be convinced that Jesus was healing with Satanโs power. And although when our prayers are answered we might not think Satan had something to do with it, how often do we just shrug and think of it as a coincidence?
Iโve written before of the struggles I have with my parents. They are non-believers. My father has stated he is an atheist. And to put it mildly they are miserable. They lead small, scared lives. I was led this year to pray vehemently for them. When I pray for them, I imagine the wall they have securely built around themselves. A nice, sturdy brick tower. Iโve asked God to break that wall down, to soften their hearts. I know I canโt do it. It must be Godโs actions. And last week I had the chance to see their faces peeking through a few bricks that had been displaced. Iโve offered to assist them during this difficult time of isolation. Iโve brought them meals, puzzles, a Kindle. Iโve offered to buy a meal service for them. But each time Iโve been met with annoyance. But last week I received a desperate text from my mother. She explained they havenโt been eating right and are very lonely. So, I made up some meals and delivered them. They were so grateful. That may sound normal. But grateful isnโt normally in their vocabulary. I lost track of how many times they thanked me. As I drove away, I caught myself thinking like someone of this world โ โwell, finally they allowed me to help. I couldโve been doing that all along.โ I forgot that this was not my doing. A few blocks away I stopped my car and I prayed. I prayed a grateful prayer to the Lord on High โ the only way those bricks couldโve been removed. I donโt know if my parents will reach through and try and shore up those bricks again. But for that day, that moment, I thanked God for allowing me to do His works and be His hands. It was truly amazing.
โGod opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.โ
James 4:6-8
We canโt continue to have one foot in for Jesus and one foot out. Because that equation is actually both feet out. In math, a positive times a negative is always negative. The covenant with God is based on trust. And when we vacillate between trusting Him and not, we allow Satan or worldly โsolutionsโ to chip away at our peace.
Patterns are pointers. They can very much reveal where a person is headed. Positive patterns tend to produce productive outcomes. Negative patterns canโt help but produce negative impact. Obedient patterns tend to produce closeness with God. Disobedient patterns canโt help but produce chaos and destruction.
Lysa Terkeurst, Trustworthy
So, when take for granted the miracles that Jesus works in and around our lives, what we are saying is we donโt trust that itโs Him. Think of King David. He was promised the kingdom but not only was it many years before he was made king, he had a target on his back by King Saul. Put yourself in his shoes. Many of us may have just given up and thought either God was lying or we misunderstood. And, at the moment David had a chance to kill King Saul, he sought Godโs counsel and remembered His promises. But what if on the day he were crowned he said, โFinally, I struggled and I fought and I accomplished this.โ David instead said,
Because of your promise, and according to your own heart you have brought about all this greatness to make your servant know it. Therefore, you are great, O Lord God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
2 Samuel 7:21-22
Take a moment and read the full text of 2 Samuel 7:18-29. You will read of a man amazed by the greatness of God. A man amazed by the goodness of God. A man amazed by how God is so trustworthy. May we, this week in the midst of our fears and struggles and joys be so amazed. May we stop the car, sit down, stop thinking and look up to the heavens and say โI trust you fully God and I know that it is YOU at work. I thank you for prayers fulfilled.โ
Iโm currently doing two different Bible studies โ one that focuses on 1 & 2 Kings and another that accounts Jesusโ last words in John.ย ย What strikes me about both is that as Godโs children, we always seem to fail.ย ย We fail and we fail and we fail, yet He forgives and forgives and forgives.ย ย How amazing is that?ย ย
This week, I asked my BSGs (Bible Study Girls) a question: โDoes God punish us?โ It led to a great discussion and a lot of contemplation. The Old Testament is full of quite a lot of โpunishment.โ We often see kingsโ children die because of the โevil they did in the eyes of the Lord.โ (1 Kings 15:34; 1 Kings 16:2, 7, 19, 26 and 31) I mean, they just couldnโt seem to figure out this whole obedience to God thing. Most notably, King Zimri (1 Kings 16: 15-20) was so tainted by greed and power that his reign only last seven days before he died in a fire as consequence of his own sin. All the droughts, wars, disease and more โ were all signs of a nation enthralled by the flesh rather than Godโs authority and power.
These Old Testament stories often leave a bad taste in both the Christian and non-Christianโs mouth. At the surface, they paint Godโs wrath in vivid colors and appall those who canโt grasp why God would let such terrible things happen to his chosen nation. The reality is, God is wrathful โ and we mustnโt forget that. But He is also a loving God whose plan was always Jesus, from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21. With that truth, we can re-read the story of the seven plagues, the 40 years in the wilderness and the tragedies of King David and know that God works all things for our good and His Glory โ because of Jesus. At the center of this undeserving covenant we gain through Jesus is a desire for obedience and faithfulness to Godโs Word BECAUSE we know the amazing sacrifice that was made for us on the cross. Amidst this, there is grace โ so much grace. For God still knows that all of His children have fallen short of His glory, and will continue to fall short until we are joined in heaven one day. His plan has always been of love and forgiveness. And thatโs pretty amazing.
So, my BSGs and I came to the conclusion that yes, there are consequences for sin and we will most likely always be hanging on tight to a pendulum that is constantly swinging between faith and doubt, but amidst that, we must trust that His plan is better and good, and right.
Besides, how often do we look in judgment at the disobedient child in the grocery store or in a restaurant and mutter to ourselves โLooks like that child needs some discipline.โ Yet, we scoff and โfind it hard to believeโ in a God who disciplines His children โ for their good and His Glory. We must find comfort in knowing we have a Father who loves us so much that he disciplines us.
For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yieldsย the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.ย
Hebrews 12:11
I, for one am thankful to now be living under the loving discipline of a perfect Father. Knowing what it is like to live without an earthly one and living a majority of my life outside of Godโs will, fulfilling the desires of my flesh โ I am utterly grateful and amazed to have a God who cares for my heart and soul. I struggle to control situations, control those around me and those I love. When I realize that this control stems from a lack of trust in the love of my heavenly Father, I begin to loosen my grip and experience true freedom. Godโs power to overwhelm me with His love is amazing. His forgiveness for me is amazing. His grace for me is amazing.ย
Once I started truly studying the Word of God, and Jesusโ teachings, in the Bible I realized how loving, how amazing the character of God is. He always has our best interest in mind. He is always leading us to something better. He never gives up on us, no matter how many times we give up on Him. Jesusโ lineage, as seen in Matthew 1, is made up of a bunch of people just like us. People who have failed God. People like King David who is the textbook example of a sinner, yet He is a sinner whose household was redeemed because of Jesus.
Nevertheless, for Davidโs sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem.
1 Kings 15:4
So today, as we enter a tumultuous, unnerving time in the United States, I challenge you to join me in finding amazement in God each day. From now until the end of November, check back every day for encouragement and guidance through the scripture as we visit several examples of how Jesus left those around him amazed.
Although we may lack faith or struggle to believe that His plans for our world are good, we must remember the plan God had for the early nation of Israel. The first part of that redemption has already been fulfilled, now we must wait expectantly for the amazing work He has in store.
We read throughout the gospels of how amazed or astonished the people were who experienced Jesus’ miracles and teachings during His short physical tenure here among us. But just because He isn’t physically here doesn’t mean He fails to do amazing things every day in our lives.
Join me and my special guest, my daughter Madison Dooley, as we spend the month of November joining those people of old in our amazement of Jesus. From His youth to His death, from His healings to His admonishments, and His teachings to His loving moments with His disciples we will see how Jesus continues His amazing work to this very day.

From the first day of Earth to today, God has been doing amazing things in our lives. And when Jesus preached and performed miracles, the Bible frequently says the people were amazed. Each day we get up to start a new day. Each day we put our feet on the floor, have breakfast, brush our teeth, and then go about our daily routine. We do the laundry, wash the dishes, log in another long day at work. It’s so easy to live in the humdrum of every day. But God is still doing amazing things!
I’ve spent much of my adult life being a pessimist. As I grew closer to Jesus it became almost impossible to continue looking at life, people and circumstances constantly from a negative point of view. God transformed me. And that, my friends, is pretty darn amazing.
Join me and my special guest writer as we explore all the amazing acts of Jesus starting November 1 through 29. My hope is that each day we will help you take these amazing Jesus acts and translate them into your amazing life.

When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching
Before I sat down to write this final word on the Book of James, I re-read through the five chapters and my highlighted notes.ย ย What struck me was how perfectly Jamesโ words speak to the state of our current world.ย ย In February 2020, as news of the Covid19 virus started coming in from around the world we didnโt think too much about it.ย ย Another type of flu, meh.ย ย And suddenly March was upon us.ย ย Our lives were shutdown.ย ย Justified or not, our businesses closed, so many allowed fear to grip them into locking themselves in their homes, we ran out of toilet paper, our churches stopped welcoming us into their doors, and we watched rioters burn down cities.ย ย Some of us turned away from God and others of us ran toward Him.
I told my husband the other day how amazingly well spoken the disciples were.ย ย I think the tendency to think back to โancient timesโ may lead us to think they werenโt as smart as us because we value โknowledgeโ over โwisdom.โย ย In this short five-chapter letter, Jamesโ gifts shine through.ย ย He is eloquent when using the metaphors of ships and rudders and forest fires and small sparks when speaking of our waggling and dangerous tongues.ย ย He turns into a great debater when providing facts about not showing favoritism and how the famed among us are typically the ones who take advantage of us.ย ย He is a fiery preacher when scolding us to submit and resist the devil.ย ย And a faithful servant reminding us to reach out to God for any and all needs.
I read an introduction to a Bible study on James once that said, โUnlike most books of the New Testament, the letter of James is best known for the people who donโt like it. People like love.ย ย They like Christ.ย ย They donโt like James.โย ย But isnโt that the very reason this letter needed to be written?ย ย Before we are thrown into a crisis like the year 2020, before we face off with the devil, before we walk out the door to deal with unhappy, non-believers, James wants to shake us awake.ย ย To give us the tools to stand firm in the face of adversity.ย ย To be Godโs faithful lights for the world.ย ย When I read James, I think of this letter as one for us everyday people.ย ย Itโs a workshop full of concrete โhow toโs.โย ย Thereโs nothing wishy washy or confusing about James.
James is a “how to” book for us all
In the midst of the trials of the last few months, how many of us have considered it โpure joy?โ (James 1:2) When out for our evening walk the other day, I told my husband how much I have appreciated what has happened. It forced me to slow down and stop fretting over filling up my daily schedule. My house got really clean. We turned to each other for loving support more than ever. We became a team and God was our head coach. Iโve been blessed to spend more time with a particular friend than I wouldnโt normally as she goes through a divorce. My BSGs (Bible study girls) started meeting in January. Two of whom I only slightly knew. We are now prayer warriors for each other. I asked my husband what positive things have come out of this for him โ in the face of a very difficult work situation. He said heโs realized who he can really rely on.
Iโve learned how to be humble.ย ย Iโve learned to listen to people who have fears that I donโt have and show them grace.ย ย That person driving alone in their car with a full double breather mask pushes me to pray for them to find peace rather than make fun of them.ย ย Because that is what the Word tells us (James 1:23).
The destruction caused by favoritism, hating our neighbor, people lacking in mercy and those living in greed fills our daily news. People wanting to burn small businesses because they feel their needs are greater. Rioters standing with bullhorns yelling all night into homes because their view of the world comes first. Employees and businesses โgaming the systemโ to get more of the money distributed to help those struggling makes me want to cry. And, I can still picture a couple at Home Depot filling their pick-up truck to its fullest with toilet paper and laughing about it. (James 2:8, 13, 3:16, 4:17, 5:2).
And if we looked hard enough, we saw churches helping their communities by doing food drives and people volunteering to help at Food Banks.ย ย We saw neighbors supporting each other.ย ย We saw churches fighting to stay open and serve their flocks.ย ย I saw people like Christian worship leader Sean Feucht gathering people by the 100s to pray and worship God outside โ at parks, at beaches, on the streets. I saw friends get on their knees and fully surrender to God. (James 2:8, 14,4:7, 5:19)
In the United States, we are going through an important presidential election.ย ย Iโve stood at street corners supporting a candidate while the opposing side hurls hatred and curse words at me.ย ย All the while they hold signs telling me to have more compassion and to love certain races.ย ย (James 3:9).ย ย Iโve watched candidate debates where the lies are piled up not only by the candidate but by the debate moderator and then by the media.ย ย All in order to disguise the true platform of the candidate.ย ย Their yes has not meant yes and their no has not meant no. (James 5:12)
Iโve said to others that this time seems unprecedent.ย ย And this letter of James seems very prescient.ย ย There is a sifting going on.ย ย Have we chosen to surrender and submit to God?ย ย (James 4:7). Have we thrown up all our worries, our hurts, our sins to God or are we taking them out on others?ย ย (James 5:13-16) Are we working to build up our brothers and sisters in Christ or are we fighting with them?ย ย (James 5:19)
Will we finally surrender it all to God?
James makes it clear, without a lot of flowery prose, as to the destruction we humans can wrought without our eyes firmly on God.ย ย The question is, will we listen and do or will we deceive ourselves?
Thank you for joining me on this journey through James.ย ย I look forward to you joining me with my next series called, โLiving Amazed through Jesusโ beginning November 1.ย
Last Christmas, my new son-in-law sat reading a large paperback book.ย ย I asked him about it.ย ย He introduced me to โSpurgeon On Prayer & Spiritual Warfare,โ a 575-page book filled with Charles Spurgeonโs sermons on prayer.ย ย There are prayers on why to pray, how to pray, what to pray, and even when to pray.ย ย After skimming over my son-in-lawโs copy, I decided I needed my own copy.ย ย Iโve only scratched the surface of the 54 sermons, but Iโve come to realize two important things about prayer: 1) Do it and 2) Do it earnestly.
The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
James 5:16
How many of us truly believe in the power of prayer?ย ย Letโs back up a bit.ย ย How many of us Christians truly believe that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Light?ย ย Unfortunately, I know quite a few people who say they are Christians but wonโt stand up with assuredness that this statement is true.ย ย We are so wrapped up in the idea of being judgemental โ telling people their way isnโt the right way โ that we are willing to give up this foundation stone.ย ย We want to put the capstone on our faith by calling ourselves โChristiansโ without the foundation.ย ย In doing so, we shove aside all the teachings of Jesus and how to express our faith out of love, rather than judgement.ย ย We also tear down the place Jesus holds in the eternal world.
Letโs say we accept the statement that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Light.ย ย We are now miles ahead of the Pharisees.ย ย This was their stumbling block.ย ย So, if we accept this, we need to then look at prayer from that vantage point.ย ย When Jesus is our Way and our Truth then we also accept God as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.ย ย And throughout scripture we are almost begged by God and Jesus to bring Him our trials, our joys, our sorrows, and our sins.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Philippians 4:6
Notice scripture doesnโt say โwell, only when you feel you need to pray.โย ย It also doesnโt say to just pray when we are sick or worried.ย ย In EVERY situation we are to pray.ย ย Upon waking, eating breakfast, hopping in our car for work (or on our computer), when a friend or colleague starts gossiping, when a friend texts you with bad news, when you look out your window and see a blue sky, when you eat lunch, when you are working on a project, when you head home from work, arrive home safely (or after an accident), when you eat dinner, when you start worrying about things on the nightly news, when you lay your head down to sleep.ย ย EVERY situation.
Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray.ย ย Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.ย ย Is anyone among you sick?ย ย Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them.
James 5:13-14
I have to confess that God has revealed a painful truth to me about my prayer life.ย ย When I am most worried about a situation is when I have the most difficult time praying.ย ย I have a hard time slowing my mind down, focusing on Jesus, and asking Him to take control.ย ย ย Back when I was a softball coach, I couldnโt stand watching a game when I was off the field.ย ย I wanted to yell out directions to the players (I yell at the TV too).ย ย But when I took my seat in the head coachโs spot, I would become calm.ย ย Itโs because I had some control over the situation.ย ย So, when I need to give up my worries itโs like standing outside that fence, letting someone else be in charge. And that is very difficult for me.
We have an agreement, a covenant that God enters into with those who pray to Him and are helped by Him.
Charles Spurgeon
In other words, we must acknowledge that God is trustworthy and has delivered us before and He will do it again.ย ย Our part is then to glorify Him through prayer and praise.ย ย Glorify โ that sounds more than just a passing โthanks, God.โย ย Iโve been guilty of that โ if I even remembered to thank Him.ย ย Which brings me to being earnest.
If we believe that Jesus is the Way and God is the powerful King of Kings, we must honor this exalted position.ย ย Would you walk into the Queen of Englandโs throne room casually and just say, โhey, whatโs up Queenie?ย ย If it were at all possible would you be able to help me find a new job? I get it if you canโt but maybe you can try.โย ย Casual, and not very expecting.ย ย God is God.ย ย The One most High.ย ย ย We should come in reverence and expectation.ย ย He CAN do all.ย ย He has done it all.ย ย We need to plead with him, put our heart into it, and rap our knuckles as hard as possible against heavenโs door.ย ย
How many of us actually have such low expectations of our prayers?ย ย We say them with rote numbness.ย ย My family used to say the exact same prayer at dinner time.ย ย It comes to mean absolutely nothing and is usually expressed with that same nothingness.ย ย My husband and I started praying in earnest this year over our evening meal.ย ย We express thankfulness and joy for good things that happened.ย ย We ask earnestly for healing of friends and family members.ย ย And we ask Him to use us and place opportunities to be His light in this world in front of us.ย ย It not only has helped us be in communion with God but it has also strengthened our marriage.
An earnest pleader comes out of his prayer closet rejoicing like a strong man ready to run his race.
Charles Spurgeon
I love that visual.ย ย After praying all my prayer cards in my โwar roomโ I frequently feel emboldened to take on the world as one of Godโs blessed daughters.ย ย How many of us who have children (or co-workers) and weโve needed them to complete a task?ย ย We mention it half-heartedly. They pretend not to hear us or just roll their eyes.ย ย As a parent and coach, I eventually perfected โThe Look.โย ย Thatโs the look that says โmom is serious about this so itโd better get done.โย ย Thatโs the look we need to have in our prayer life.ย ย Expectation that God will answer our prayers.ย ย It may sound sacrilegious to โexpect Godโ to do something in our life but He himself has said to us over and over to trust Him, to ask Him, to plead with Him.
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
and forgive us our debts, as
we have also forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation but
deliver us from the evil one.”
Matthew 6:9-13
Do you see the glorification and exaltation of God in the first sentence?ย ย Then, the trust and reminder that Godโs will is meant to rule the earth.ย ย We then ask him to provide for us.ย ย Really, using the word โgiveโ is like demanding.ย ย Pleading with Him to forgive us.ย ย And giving us hope for the future.ย ย Man, was Jesus so great with words!ย ย How many times have we recited this and not thought about what we are saying?ย ย Next time we speak these words make it in earnest, bring some emotion to it!ย ย Beg Him to forgive you and help you.
We are ordinary people asking extraordinary things from an amazing, loving, faithful, and powerful God.ย Throughout the Bible, people just like us asked for victory over large armies, the rain to fall and the rain to stop, for loved ones to be healed and even raised from the dead, for our never-ending ailments to be taken away, for our life of sin to be cleansed.ย ย And God abided.ย ย ย He healed us.ย ย He saved us.ย ย He made it rain.ย ย He has showered us for centuries with answered prayers.ย
If Jesus could lift a man from the dead, imagine what He can do with our prayers?
We must pray in earnest.ย ย It is a supernatural, powerful tool that Jesus gave us.ย ย Some of us use prayer like we are brushing our teeth โ rote and without remembering all the benefits.ย ย Something we have to do.ย ย Itโs time to take it up daily like a torch against the darkness, a sword against evil, and a golden gift presented to our Lord Most Exalted.
As I sit here typing I am enjoying the sounds of my neighborโs roof being ripped apart by workers. Yes, enjoying. You see my new neighbors moved in about two months ago. And then they moved out. I havenโt seen them much over the two months because they had their flooring all re-done. And then re-done. The person they originally hired to install their beautiful reclaimed wood floors did a horrible job โ when he showed up. So, they had to fire him and hire a new installer. And now the roof. Theyโve been told for weeks the new roof would be installed any day. Last week they were told it would be on Thursday. Then Friday. Then Monday. So today the roofers finally arrived. I like my new neighbors and I know how frustrating this has been for them. So yes, Iโm enjoying the noise knowing the work has finally started. It seems that there are so few people and companies we can actually rely on today who make their โyesโ mean โyes.โ It may sound harsh, but when we donโt make our โyesโ mean โyesโ and our โnoโ mean โnoโ thatโs called lying.
Above all, do not swear โ not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple โyesโ or no.โย
James 5:12
I watched an interesting video interaction once where a pastor went up to people and asked if they sinned and had broken the 10 commandments.ย ย They all said, โno.โย ย Then he started asking them questions.ย ย โHave you ever taken a pen from your work?โ Thatโs stealing.ย ย โHave you ever โswore to Godโ you would do something for someone and you didnโt?โย ย Thatโs taking Godโs name in vain.ย ย And on and on.ย ย It was fascinating to watch the faces of the people change.ย ย They looked humbled.
The Bible is big on trustworthiness.ย ย Godโs covenant with us is His way of setting this concept in the forefront.ย ย He is trustworthy.ย ย He is the God of yesterday, today and tomorrow.ย ย He is the Rock we can trust will be with us in times of trouble.ย ย And He asks us to work on being trustworthy with our promises. When we are asked by a friend not to reveal something told in confidence, we arenโt to go into that decision lightly.ย ย With Godโs wisdom by our side we give our โyesโ or our โno.โย ย And we stick by it.ย ย We donโt need to swear it.ย ย We just need to mean it.
โA gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.โ
Proverb 11:13
I was a PTA president at my daughtersโ elementary school for two years.ย ย I frequently asked people to help on projects or events.ย ย I appreciated those who would say โnoโ and not be squirmy about it.ย ย I, of course, really appreciated the people who gave me an eager โyesโ and meant it.ย ย The people I had the most issue with were those that said โyesโ and then wouldnโt show up, wouldnโt do the work, or gave a half-hearted effort.ย ย They would swear they wanted to help. Itโs those people that I felt had they said no, I wouldโve been better off.ย ย
If he is a true man and has plainly said, โI will,โ you have him in your hand.ย ย He was free before giving it but not free after.
Charles Spurgeon
What if we all thought that way when we gave our decisions?ย ย Before we answer, we are fully free to pick whichever we wish.ย ย But once we say โI willโ we are fully committed.ย ย Yes, circumstances arise that may be difficult to follow through โ a late order from another company, the weather, an illness, something breaks down โ but knowing we have made that commitment we will move heaven and earth to fulfill that obligation.ย ย We all have experienced situations where a person or company fails in their obligation.ย ย ย It is their reaction to that failure that we most respond to.ย ย Are they willing to make up for the failure?ย ย Are they contrite? Or do you get a โwhateverโ response?ย ย We will determine then if they are trustworthy or not.
When we enter into that covenant with another person by giving our โyesโ we need to be sure we arenโt impetuous.ย ย Are we making that decision to impress others or even to impress God?ย ย I was involved with a woman through Girl Scouts and PTA for many years who volunteered for everything.ย ย People on the outside thought she was amazing!ย ย Her name was on all the volunteer lists.ย ย The only problem was she never actually followed through and completed the tasks.ย ย
โIf you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you wonโt be honest with greater responsibilities.ย
Luke 16:1-
Thatโs Jesus talking.ย ย And heโs not just talking about following through with commitments we make and being honest.ย ย Heโs also talking about saying โnoโ to things we need to say โnoโ to.ย ย When we are tempted to do wrong, we need to just say a firm โno.โย ย When we are asked to take on a task and have prayed about it and God tells us โno,โ we need to say the same to the asker.ย ย Not โmaybe.โย ย Not, โpossibly.โย ย Not, โIโll see.โย ย We donโt need some long explanation.ย ย With His wisdom tucked firmly in our back pocket to be used at a momentโs notice, we can be firm on our โno.โย ย Sometimes itโs difficult to decide which way to turn.ย ย If only we had the breastplate described in Exodus 28:15
Fashion a breastpiece for making decisionsโthe work of skilled hands. Make it like the ephod: of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen.
Exodus 28:15
Included on the tunic was a pocket with a black and a white stone.ย ย When a big decision needed to be made, the faith leader would reach in and pull out the stone.ย ย Black for no and white for yes.ย ย It reminds me of those Magic 8 Balls.ย ย Although those always seemed stuck on โMaybe.โ
In my post on patience I listed the reasons you should have patience.ย ย One of those was for better decision-making.ย ย When we arenโt emotional and stressed, we can think through a decision much clearer.ย ย As a Christian we have the power of prayer.ย ย We have the Word of God.ย ย How many of us, when faced with a big decision turn to both of these?ย ย And wait for an answer?ย ย I used to volunteer for anything thrown my way.ย ย Part of it was out of pride โ thinking how great it was to be asked.ย ย Another part was needing to always be โdoing something.โย ย After I volunteered THEN I would ask God to work it out.ย ย Yes, a bit backwards.ย ย
I learned a long time ago at my first professional, career job that, when making especially difficult or controversial decisions, I wanted to align those decisions with my boss.ย ย That way I knew if issues came up, I was supported.ย ย That thinking has served me well throughout my working career.ย ย And when I finally applied that same concept to the rest of my life it made giving my โyesโ and my โnoโ much easier.ย ย God is my boss.ย ย When I align my decisions with His Word, I am strengthened by the promises He has made.ย ย I know He is working all things for my good.
But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.
Iโve told my friends that looking back over my life so far, I really have only one regret.ย ย Itโs that I wish I had a closer relationship with Jesus when I was the parent of young kids.ย ย My husband and I attended church fairly regularly.ย ย But I was wrapped up in childrearing worries and stresses and didnโt know how to turn all that over to God.ย ย ย I couldโve enjoyed many more hours of sleep had I not been such a โwoulda, coulda, shouldaโ person.ย ย I found myself, during a very long season of self-doubt about my parenting skills, constantly praying for patience.ย ย Literally praying every single night for about two years for patience.ย ย You see, I was so afraid of turning into my mother โ screaming at my kids and losing control โ that I thought patience was the answer.ย ย One Sunday, our pastorโs sermon was about praying.ย ย He said, โIf you keep praying about the same problem over and over and over maybe itโs time to start praying for something different.โย ย ย He had a knack for speaking on issues near and dear to me.ย ย ย So that night I stopped praying for patience and instead prayed for ways to help me deal with difficult situations.
As Iโve grown closer to Jesus, He has taught me a lot of lessons. Heโs still teaching me. And step-by-step He has moved me closer to my original plea for patience. You see, I wasnโt ready to learn the hard stuff yet. He just wanted me to start turning to Him when I was in need, when I was broken. Patience may be a virtue but it is a heck of a hard thing to have and use regularly.
You, too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lordโs coming is near.โ
James 5:8
I first needed to learn what standing firm, standing safely in Godโs arms even meant.ย ย I didnโt have the wisdom needed to grasp the joy in hearing that the Lord is coming near.ย ย I heard on a Joyce Meyerโs podcast this morning that God gives us a lot of leeway and grace when we first become Christians.ย ย But once we hear the Word and gain His wisdom, expectations change.ย ย We are expected to act as His children, not as children of this world.ย ย Think about that.ย ย Every time we attend church, do a Bible study, listen to a Christian podcast, see a Christian post on social media we are hearing His Word.ย ย We are learning the nature and expectations of God.ย ย And He expects us to live as He prescribes.
A personโs wisdom yields patience; it is the oneโs glory to overlook offense.
Proverbs 19:11
Wisdom that we glean from God yields patience.ย ย And when we are patient, that glorifies what we have learned from God.ย ย We cannot be steeped in the nature of God without also knowing and acting in patience.ย ย Why?ย Because patience means love.ย ย It means grace.ย ย It means forgiveness.ย ย Thank God He is patient with us.ย ย I never feel God rushes me to learn a lesson.ย ย In fact, my lesson in patience has taken about 26 years.
I looked up on-line โhow to be patient.โ I came across a website that focuses on self -improvement. Hereโs their reasons why we should learn patience.
We make better decisions by assessing situations rather than going in emotional and blind.
We have less stress by understanding some things take longer than others.
Our relationships are improved because we are more flexible and understanding.
Doesnโt that all sound like something God would want from us? Being wise, giving our stress up to God, and loving and being grace-filled toward others.
They then described a 6-step process for learning patience:
Understand and counteract triggers
Increase your self-confidence
Put on your โpositive glassesโ
Change your attitude โ โwhy are you in such a hurry?โ
Visualize worst case scenarios
Release tension and stress through eating right, exercise, enjoying activities
Now imaging trying to do all that without God.ย ย Hereโs my Christian re-do of these six steps:
Pray for God to reveal the areas where you struggle with patience (sometimes we pretend we arenโt being impatient and justify our actions)ย
John 16:24, โUntil now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.โ
Recognize that God loves you.ย ย Accept He wants the very best for you.ย ย
John 16:27, โNo, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.โ
Remember that joy can be found in trials.ย ย And most of all that God has delivered for you in the past.ย ย He is faithful.ย
2 Thes 3:3, โBut the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.โ
Rejoice each and every day, if not every hour, for all the great things in your life.ย ย
Prov 17:22, โA cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.โ
To be honest, visualizing worst case scenarios has been helpful to me.ย ย If Iโm waiting in a long line at Costco and start getting impatient I think, โWell, what have I got to be impatient for anyways?โ or โWell, if Iโm late because of this line I can call ahead and let them know.โย ย
Matt 6:27, โCan anyone of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?โ
Yes, eat right, exercise, enjoy new and old activities.ย ย And pray.ย ย And pray.ย ย And pray.ย ย Give up all those thoughts, those worries, those fears, those negative emotions to God.ย ย Cry out to Jesus and ask Him to remove whatever negative thought you have right then.ย
1 Samuel 2:1, โMy heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance.โ
When we get closer to God โ become fluent in His character โ that is when He can work His ways in us. And God is always patient with us. My friend and I were having lunch today and she said she is starting to have more moments in her difficult life where she looks up and gives a little smile โ recognizing those growth moments God has put in front of her. As for me, I described for her my process of writing and how I study the topic, pray, and then start writing. I rarely stop writing one of these posts until I am done. The words just come out of me onto the computer. My whole body is focused on getting these words down. I told her how weird it was that I was interrupted multiple times while writing this post. And as I drove home from lunch, I was listening to a praise song and it hit me. Patience. The topic of this post. And I had just been tested. I was not annoyed about the interruptions. I felt blessed hearing from a few friends. And normally I wouldโve been distracted during lunch, thinking about what else I needed to write. I wouldโve failed my friend who I need to support during this time in her life.
I called my friend from my car and said, โI just got it!ย ย Patience!ย ย I was tested!โย ย And she said, โI realized that while you were telling me.ย ย And Iโm glad it finally came to you.โย ย Maybe this whole actually studying Godโs Word really does work.ย ย Time to look up and smile.
