A Cotton Seed World

Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, โ€œThe coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21 nor will people say, โ€˜Here it is,โ€™ or โ€˜There it is,โ€™ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.โ€ Luke 17:20-21

My BSGs are embarking on a new study called, โ€œHe Speaks to Me,โ€ by Priscilla Shirer.  What stood out to me in the first video we watched was her discussion about the Kingdom of God.  She shared with the audience about how in the Old Testament the Israelites prayed for the โ€œcomingโ€ Kingdom of God.  It was something they hoped and yearned for throughout their years as a new and developing nation.  And right at the beginning of the New Testament we find John the Baptist proclaiming:

โ€œRepent for the kingdom of heaven has come near!โ€ Matthew 3:2

With Jesusโ€™ arrival, the Kingdom of God (or Heaven) became flesh and was brought to the Israelites.  And so many of them refused to grasp that their prayers were answered.  And when Jesus was resurrected, the Holy Spirit remained to cover us with the Kingdom.

Today I praise God for His continual presence in our world, in my life and yours.  The big word is โ€œomnipresent.โ€  But I like to think of it more as though I move through and live in Godโ€™s presence.  Heโ€™s not โ€œwith me.โ€  I am more like the tiny seed that is buried in a fluff of freshly picked cotton.  I am in Godโ€™s kingdom, surrounded by Him.

When I grasped this idea just a year or so ago it changed my perspective dramatically.  I donโ€™t need to ask God to come help me or be near me.  I just need to slow down my brain and remember I am always in His presence.  We are all in His presence, whether we believe in Him or not.

It reminds me of the movie, The Matrix.  There are those in the movie whose brains and bodies are hooked up to a virtual reality machine.  They move about in a phony world without realizing its fake character.  And then there are the people who have disconnected from the computer and live almost in an alternate space โ€“ the real, tangible world.  When we disconnect from the world of the flesh and recognize that this is Godโ€™s world, His created space, and that we are in His midst, we start seeing life and how to live it from a new perspective.

The Kingdom, Jesus reiterated in our first verse is not a specific โ€œthingโ€ to be seen.  Itโ€™s because it is everything in Godโ€™s creation.  It is the grace God gifted us through Jesus.  It is His Holy workings in our lives via the Holy Spirit.  The kingdom is God and God is the kingdom.  Gnaw on that a bit!

When Iโ€™m struggling with an issue or feel pulled apart by the fleshly world, I now seek that โ€œsweet spot.โ€  That quiet moment where I can feel nestled in His presence, like that little cotton seed.  I wrap it around me like a warm, soft blanket and thank God I can call him โ€œhome.โ€

Egg-ceptional Gifts

God blessed them and said to them, โ€œBe fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.โ€ Genesis 1:28

My husband and I have four chickens on our little suburban farm.  They are our โ€œCovid Babies.โ€  Iโ€™m not really sure why we decided to get the chickens back in March of 2020.  We knew nothing about taking care of farm animals.  But like starry-eyed parents carrying home their little bundle of joy from the hospital we eagerly packed up our four baby chicks in a box and left the dusty little farm store behind.  We got four, instead of the two we originally planned, because we arenโ€™t allowed to have a rooster in the city.  It was our insurance plan. If one or two grew up to be roosters weโ€™d have to โ€œdo awayโ€ with them.

And here we are more than a year later with four giant chickens in a fairly small coop.  Henny Penny, Mabel, Grandma and Goldie donโ€™t seem to mind.  They grew up snuggled in close and seem to enjoy each otherโ€™s company.  Each day we go out to the nesting box in eager anticipation of fresh eggs and we are rewarded.  But what does that have to do with praising God?

Today, as I look out my โ€œShe Shedโ€ window and watch my four egg making creatures peck and sleep I canโ€™t help but be amazed at the plans and gifts of God.  In the beginning He created the animals and plants prior to man.  He prepared a place so perfect for us humans to grow and prosper.  The chicken is pretty much Godโ€™s perfect animal gift to us.  It is an egg laying machine.  Left to wander they drop eggs wherever they go โ€“ fertilized or not.  Itโ€™s a daily gift of food, not just for humans, but other animals should they be so lucky to encounter a free roamer.

When we got our baby chicks we read all the books about how to care for chickens and how to train them up just right.  Having trained a puppy just a year prior I was ready for the task.  And yet, when the time came to put them out in their โ€œBig Girl Coopโ€ they needed no human intervention.  At night they headed to their protected beds.  By day they hid away in the appointed laying space.  All by instinct.  All by Godโ€™s design.  Itโ€™s pretty amazing.

When we remove the concept of God the Creator from our lives and look at the world from a random point of view the danger is in placing humans and animals on equal ground.  But since the beginning of recorded time humans were appointed by God as protectors and users of Earthโ€™s resources.  God did not make a chicken to simply lay hundreds if not thousands of eggs in her lifetime just for them to be unused.

If youโ€™ve ever been around a chicken in the midst of the egg laying process youโ€™ll hear something interesting.  When the deed is done, she will often squawk loudly in triumph.  My chickens donโ€™t hang around protecting that egg from me.  In fact, itโ€™s almost like they are saying, โ€œhere, have another!โ€  And each warm egg I pull from the nest is a reminder of our God who has gifted us with all we need.

The Everlasting God

Day and night they never stop saying: โ€œโ€˜Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,โ€™ who was, and is, and is to come.โ€ Revelation 4:8

I donโ€™t know about you but as a โ€œbaby Christianโ€ I would go entire days if not weeks without thinking about God.  Without making any decision based on what God wanted of me.  As my journey has progressed that โ€œforgetting about Godโ€ can be counted in minutes and hours.  And with that I have seen so many changes in my life.

The verse today takes place as the end times draw near.  Creatures in heaven praising God โ€œday and nightโ€ simply because of his everlasting holiness. As Iโ€™ve studied the Bible, Iโ€™ve seen so often how God wants a close relationship with us.  Here in this verse the creatures never forget about God.  But youโ€™ll notice that God is also a constant.  He was and is and is to come.

Since the 1970s, one group or another has played โ€œchicken littleโ€ screaming from the rooftops about the world ending due to either overpopulation, nuclear war, economic collapse, global warming, etc.  At one point a politician even posted a countdown to Earthโ€™s destruction — which ran out about 8 years ago.  And according to a current politician we have about 10 years left before the Earth implodes apparently.

But hereโ€™s the thing, when you study the Book of Revelation itโ€™s not the Earth or God that is destroyed, itโ€™s sin.  God is the Alpha and Omega.  He created the beginning and will be with us throughout eternity.

Today I praise the everlasting God.  We cannot destroy God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit.  We can only, through our sin-filled, unrepentant lives destroy ourselves.  My earthly goal is to serve God as best I can with Jesus as my guidebook and the Holy Spirit as my tour guide.  That way I can join with the creatures in heaven continuously praising His name.

Living In The Light

For God, who said, โ€œLet light shine out of darkness,โ€ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of Godโ€™s glory displayed in the face of Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:6

Iโ€™ve been thinking a lot about separateness lately.  As the world seems to move farther and farther away from the message of Christ, I find myself feeling separated from so much of the goings on.  Politics, social and moral issues that the world promotes appear to be so upside down.  At times Iโ€™ve asked, โ€œWhere is God in all of this?โ€

โ€œImagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of – throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.โ€

C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

โ€œWhat on earth is He up to?โ€ is, I suppose, the better question.  Since the beginning of time Godโ€™s work has been about separateness.  He separated the dark from the light.  The land from the sea.  The heavens from the earth.  He even set apart man from beast.  And when He commanded that there would be light it also meant He would set apart good from evil.  From that day on He started working in our hearts to bring us into the light.  The light that Jesus gave direct access to through His sacrifice.

Iโ€™ve been visiting a new church with my husband.  The pastor is Adriel Sanchez.  Some of you may recognize him as one of the duo from Core Christianity โ€“ a podcast and radio show heard around the world.  His church has begun a new series on Genesis.  And he spoke on the creation of light and dark.

God created beauty, order and light and He didnโ€™t need ingredients.  He made them out of nothing, darkness.

Pastor Adriel Sanchez

He went on to put the Jewish (and eventually Christian) creation story in to context.  The Jews were most likely wandering in the desert when this story was possibly given to Moses from God.  Their lives were dark and chaotic.  And while other religions of the time, just like today, have their own creation story, those religions created gods out of what was created โ€“ the Sun God, Moon God, God of Nature, etc.  Youโ€™ll notice in Genesis that the sun and moon arenโ€™t called those names.  Possibly to avoid man from elevating them to a worshipping status.  God created all the things that these other religions made into little gods.

We werenโ€™t created to serve the sun, the moon, or nature.  They were created FOR man by God.

Pastor Adriel Sanchez

When you think about what God did for us humans itโ€™s pretty amazing.  Think about a gift you received that was the best gift ever.  Do you remember how you thanked the person who gave it to you?  Now imagine this gift that God gave us.  The light, the land, the skies, the animals.  How could we ever thank Him enough?  All He has ever asked of us is to set ourselves apart from the darkness.

Our hearts are like the wilderness โ€“ dark and chaotic.  And God says to our hearts, โ€œLet there be light!

Pastor Adriel Sanchez

So letโ€™s go back to C.S. Lewis’ imagery of rebuilding the house.  God is working on rebuilding the world.  God works on large scale projects while also working on our tiny little bathroom remodel.  Itโ€™s the same work schedule He has maintained throughout history. Thereโ€™s a lot of knocking down walls going on.  And with that comes a lot of pushback from people who donโ€™t want the light to enter in the room.  They enjoy living in the darkness in order to put themselves and their desires at their center.

Iโ€™ve heard people talk disparaging about the Bible โ€“ its violence especially.  Many uneducated about the Bible take issue with destroying whole towns and killing off all the residents.  But put in context it was a major remodel taking place.  Those cities were rife with termites and rot.  Child sacrifices and unbridled sexual exploits all in the name of satisfying some fertility god were rampant.  They were just plain evil.

And while God was using other people and the Jews to destroy those darkened places He made it a point to work in each and every Israeliteโ€™s heart.  He cared about behavior but He cared more for bringing light to their hearts and minds.  They were to act like people set apart from the darkness. He cared enough about us, as individuals, to first send His Son and then leave us with the light of His Holy Spirit to dwell in each of us.

Itโ€™s hard to live set apart from the world.  It may cause our faith, at times, to wane.  But Iโ€™m finding when I change my question from โ€œWhere is God?โ€ to โ€œWhat on earth is He up to?โ€ it helps me to see His work in me and the world.  For when I see my Savior I surely want to be remodeled, a house full of light.

One Truth

Life Lesson #4: Know the truth of Godโ€™s Word

Anyone who runs ahead and does
not continue in the teaching of
Christ does not have God; whoever
continues in the teaching has
both the Father and the Son.
2 John 9

We hear a lot of โ€œmy truth,โ€ โ€œyour truthโ€ these days.  What that really means is telling someone that their experience of a situation makes the facts of that situation flexible.   The use of this term makes it clear you arenโ€™t to question someoneโ€™s opinion.  For example, we all know how human life is created.  When a human sperm fertilizes a human egg, the new life begins its process toward a fully created human baby.  Those are facts.  The circumstances surrounding that creation of new life may be slightly different for one person or another.  But those circumstances donโ€™t create a โ€œnew truthโ€ about the creation of life.

We have now entered into the teachings found in the small letter by John (2 John) to a woman, whom scholars believe to be a home church host. In it, he reminds her that there are self-professed “teachers of the word” who have either added to or distorted Jesus’ words. He cautions her to not even allow people like that into her home for fear that people will be led astray.

There is a frightening movement in our time that says we canโ€™t agree on even basic truths.  In the world of โ€œchurch,โ€ entire denominations have turned away from scripture by voting on accepting โ€œnew truths.โ€  Iโ€™m not sure what the end goal is behind this movement except chaos.  And as Christians we know who the king of chaos is โ€“ Satan.

โ€œIf โ€˜moving forwardโ€™ leads us away from the doctrines of the person and work of Jesus Christ then that is dangerous.โ€

Warren Wiersbe on 2 John

I had a great discussion with a friend about the Gnostic texts found at Nag Hammadi.  Once the apostles trained more and more missionaries, the Word spread far and wide. But that also meant the Word of God got more and more distorted.  In fact, all the letters written by the apostles and included in the Bible have some focus on sticking with the truth of the Gospel and Jesusโ€™ words. Sure there were folks that simply misunderstood the message but there were also those that craved power and the possibility of making money off new believers (something that still happens today!)

Iโ€™m always surprised when Iโ€™m in faith-type discussions with fellow Christians and a statement about God or Jesus is said that just doesnโ€™t find its truth in the Bible.  For some, studying and reading the Bible just isnโ€™t a priority.  Yet those same Christians go out into the world professing to know and understand its truths.  Hereโ€™s a few you might recognize:

  • โ€œJesus is a socialist.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œJesus says to love and accept everyone no matter what.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œThe Bible doesnโ€™t have a problem with homosexuality (or any kind of sex outside marriage).โ€
  • โ€œThe Bible hates women.โ€
  • “I love Jesus but there are lots of different ways to salvation and God.”ย ย
  • โ€œThe Bible teaches us to hate rich people and the accumulation of wealth.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œIf you pray hard enough God will answer you.โ€ย
  • โ€œIf God doesnโ€™t answer you then you obviously have done something wrong.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œThe Bible teaches that women are less respected than men.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œJesus was just a man.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œChristians arenโ€™t supposed to express their beliefs if in a government job.โ€ย ย
  • โ€œChristians are supposed to obey the government no matter what.โ€
  • โ€œFaith should be private.โ€
  • โ€œSharing the gospel is like being a used car salesman and isnโ€™t something we should do.โ€
  • “Jesus wants you to give up everything you own and follow him.”

A few years ago, the denomination that I’ve been a member of for about 20 years authorized same-sex marriages and voted to divest from Israel.  I wrote to the leadership and made a simple request.  โ€œShow me where your decision is based on Biblical truth.โ€  And what I got in response was crickets. Because, “who do I think I am questioning those in the know?” But the great thing about Jesus is He brought the Word to all of us.

โ€œI am the vine; you are the branches.
If you remain in me and I in you, you
will bear much fruit; apart from me
you can do nothing.โ€
John 15:5

In other words, our job is to stay tightly attached to Jesus.  Stay anchored in His Holy Word.  If we could even stick with the basic message of Jesus day in and day out, we would be victorious in living out the one, most important truth โ€“ that God sent His son to give us redemption for our sins.  And our acceptance of this truth leads us to behave like saved people, attached to the great vine.

Keep this Book of the Law always
on your lips; meditate on it day
and night, so that you may be careful
to do everything written in it.
Then you will be prosperous and
successful.
Joshua 1:8

Throughout the Bible we are told to have His Holy Word on our lips, on our hearts and on our minds.  How do we do that?  For many it stops at going to church occasionally.  But what my BSGs (Bible study girls) have discovered is that to truly know and understand the great truths of the Bible is to be immersed in His Word.  To truly study on it, meditate on it, sing it, speak it and even defend it.  And then it becomes imprinted on our hearts and minds.  Too many of us go to the once a week lecture in the lecture hall and then fail to do the assigned homework.

If our homes and churches are to be true to Christ and oppose false teachers, we must know the truth.

Warren Wiersbe on 2 John

There is no true love apart from the truth of God.  He sets us on the right, good and loving path.  Love, because we know the truth, becomes action.

Stand firm then with the belt
of truth buckled around your waist,
with the breastplate of righteousness
in place.
Ephesians 6:14

We hear a lot about the need to be โ€œprogressiveโ€ in our faith so that it has relevance โ€“ or new โ€œtruths.โ€  Yet, when we read the Bible we see the same sinful behavior played out year after year, century after century.  The Greek word prokopรฉ (progress) means something different to Christians.

For the believer, this means going forward in sanctification, cutting through obstacles by the Lord’s power.

Strong’s Concordance

โ€œBy the Lordโ€™s powerโ€ โ€“ His Spirit and His Word.  Progress to a Christian is not about creating a โ€œnew truth.โ€  Itโ€™s about applying God’s truth to our lives and cutting out our worldly ways.  Itโ€™s about resting in the knowledge that God is the God of yesterday, today and tomorrow.  Itโ€™s about having peace that Jesus taught us what is right and good.  Itโ€™s about knowing that the Holy Spirit guides us through the chaos of this world.  It is our responsibility as Godโ€™s people to know the truth of His Word.

Wonderfully Made

For we are Godโ€™s masterpiece.
He has created us anew in
Christ Jesus, so we can do
the good things he planned
for us long ago.
Ephesians 2:10

A prayer to love myself

Heavenly Father, so many of my perceived short falls come from my poor sense of self-worth.ย ย I look in the mirror sometimes and to be honest I donโ€™t always see what you see โ€“ a beautifully, wonderfully made daughter of God.ย ย And I confess that my lack of love for your creation can spill over to my inability to openly love others without judgment.ย ย But I donโ€™t want to grieve the Holy Spirit any longer.ย ย My heart, body, mind and soul were created by and belong to you, LORD.ย ย With the reminders found in your Holy Word to love my neighbor as myself I will look into that mirror with newfound love and admiration for your creation.ย ย Thank you for my life, thank you for making me uniquely me.ย ย I lift this up in Jesusโ€™ name, Amen

I sat and listened to her tell me how she feels unworthy, unlovable, lacking talent and more.  It made me so sad because she was none of these.  What made me even sadder was I realized Iโ€™ve frequently thought the same about myself.  I look in the mirror and think, โ€œYou look old, unattractive, chubby, wrinkly โ€“ very non cover of Vogue-like.โ€  And then I turn to my closet and evaluate which clothes will fit me that day.  Tearing myself down for gaining those few extra pounds.  And the piece dโ€™ resistance?  Wondering if what Iโ€™m going to accomplish that day will be of any value.

I was listening to a pastor the other day who was in the middle of a series on committing our whole bodies โ€“ heart, mind and soul โ€“ to God.  She went on to talk about how when we struggle with self-worth it affects everything about our lives.  If we get into a mild argument with our spouse, we might believe they obviously think we are stupid or worthless simply because they disagree with our opinion.  We grasp for people outside ourselves to build us up but when they do, we donโ€™t always trust their motives.

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my
motherโ€™s womb. I praise you
because I am fearfully and
wonderfully made;your works are
wonderful,I know that full well.
Psalm 139:13-14

How many of us can truly say, โ€œI know that full well?โ€ย ย We easily quote scripture proclaiming that God loves us.ย ย But do we really believe it?ย ย

Some of us were fortunate to grow up in loving homes which shot us out into the world with a great sense of belonging and love.ย ย That sense gets attacked regularly by the world.ย ย And those of those who didnโ€™t start out that way also experience those attacks of the world. Itโ€™s no wonder, starting from a lack of a filled bucket, that so many of us plunge into self-destruction and self-loathing.

When, during a particularly difficult time of false self-evaluation, I looked in the mirror and realized how dishonoring I was being to God.ย ย And that if I could just start with the acknowledgement that God made me and knows me then maybe, just maybe I could grow to love me just as He does.ย

We must rest in the glory and amazing work of God in order to fully be His warriors.ย ย That starts with us.ย ย No matter your thick or thin hair, your smooth skin or wrinkles, your short or tall stature, your past, the job you have (or donโ€™t), your ability to arrange flowers or pick the perfect wall color, your knowledge about science or the humanities, God loves you.ย ย He loves me.ย ย I am wonderfully and beautifully made.ย ย I just need to keep telling that to the girl in the mirror.

If you want this too, add the prayer to your daily prayer list and watch and see how God works in your life!

Vessels of Good News

As the rainย and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seedย for
the sower and bread for the eater,
so is my wordย that goes out from
my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purposeย for
which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:10-11

The Gospel is good news. Plain and simple. The actual word โ€œgospelโ€ is translated to mean โ€œgood storyโ€ or โ€œgood newsโ€ in Greek. But the question is โ€“ if the Gospel truly is good news, why is it so hard for us to talk about it?

Iโ€™ll rewind a bit and start from the very beginning. For those who have always heard the word Gospel, but never heard the story of the Gospel, here it is:

1. God created us for his glory (Creation).

2. Therefore, every human should live for Godโ€™s glory.

3. Nevertheless, we have all sinned and fallen short of Godโ€™s glory (the Fall).

4. Therefore, we all deserve eternal punishment (Hell).

5. Yet, in his great mercy, God sent his only Son Jesus Christ into the world to provide for sinners the way of eternal life (the Cross).

6. Therefore, eternal life is a free gift to all who will trust in Christ as Lord and Savior and supreme Treasure of their lives (Salvation).

John Piper

All that to say, the Gospel is indeed good news. It means eternal intimacy in the presence of God, forgiveness of sins and citizenship in Heaven where there will be no more sorrow or pain โ€“ ever. For those of us who have been saved by grace through faith and are living testimonies of the power of the Gospel, we are all vessels of this good news.

As Isaiah writes in chapter 55, God is proclaiming and promising that the good news he has sent down to earth (salvation through his Son Jesus), will indeed be fulfilled and carried from nation to nation until Jesus returns again.

As described in verse 10, God sent down Jesus like rain, to water a dry and barren earth. God has promised us that this rain would not leave the earth dry and barren, but that it would be fully watered until it is returned to its original perfect creation. Right now, we are still in the watering phase of Godโ€™s plan for creation. The land is still thirsty and in need of the living water, and thankfully, we as Christians know just where to find it.

Those in Christ are not just blessed with knowing the truth of the Gospel, we are called to share it. As the Jesusโ€™ Great Commission states in Matthew 28:

Goย thereforeย andย makeย disciplesย ofย
allย nations,baptizingย themย in the
nameย ofย theย Fatherย andย ofย theย Sonย
andย ofย theย Holyย Spirit,ย teaching
themย toย observeย allย thatย Iย haveย commanded
you.ย Andย behold, Iย amย withย youย always,
toย theย endย ofย theย age.
Matthew 28:19-20

We are vessels of good news and have the refreshing drink our thirsty world is gasping for. Sharing the Gospel may not always be easy, but it is always Godโ€™s will for us to share the good news of Jesus Christ. We are a part of Godโ€™s redemption story for this world. He uses us, ordinary people, to return to Creation what was robbed by sin.

I challenge you today to change your perspective from one of fear and hesitation towards sharing the Gospel, to one of joy and anxious anticipation for sharing the good news of salvation. As believers, we exist to serve God โ€“ not the other way around. Start today by remembering that God is using you as a divine vessel of good news, created and saved to play an important role in His plan for our world.

Relish in that promise today.

Amazing Authority

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit

Then he went down to Capernaum,ย a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. They were amazed at his teaching,ย because his words had authority.

ย In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,ย โ€œGo away! What do you want with us,Jesus of Nazareth?ย Have you come to destroy us? I know who you areโ€”the Holy One of God!โ€

ย โ€œBe quiet!โ€ย Jesus said sternly.ย โ€œCome out of him!โ€Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

All the people were amazedย and said to each other, โ€œWhat words these are! With authorityย and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!โ€ย 37ย And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.

Luke 4:31-37

I always like to imagine what it would have been like to be in Jesusโ€™ presence on earth. To hear his voice and feel the power that flowed from His fingertips.ย

Throughout Jesusโ€™ time on earth, we see many instances where he is able to command an entire crowd, heal someone with simply a few words and cast out demons just with his presence. There is no doubt that being in the presence of Jesus meant feeling an indescribable authority. As described in Luke 4:32, it says that His word โ€œpossessed authority.โ€ Those listening didnโ€™t quite know why or how โ€“ but they knew that He had a level of authority that was bigger than themselves, bigger than even the Chief Priests they bowed down to.ย

Recognizing Jesusโ€™ amazing authority is pivotal for us. Itโ€™s pivotal when we read scripture, its critical when we pray, and itโ€™s important to remember when we find ourselves with a tight grip around the so-called โ€œhandlesโ€ of our life we think we have. Jesusโ€™ authority trumps all. The Lordโ€™s Word trumps all. The authority that Jesus spoke with here in Luke 4 was noticeable to the crowds because it was the mighty power of God that was flowing through Him, touching the deepest parts of each individual’s hearts and souls.ย

But I want you to know that the Son of Manย has authority on earth to forgive sins.โ€ย So he said to the paralyzed man,ย โ€œGet up, take your mat and go home.โ€ย Then the man got up and went home.

Matthew 9:6-7

When we read Godโ€™s Word, we mustnโ€™t forget that it still โ€“ and always will โ€“ possesses the same level of authority that Jesus spoke with that day in Capernaum. When He says โ€œlove your enemy,โ€ He commands that with authority. When He says โ€œblessed are those who are persecuted,โ€ He speaks that with authority. And when He says โ€œyou must lose your life before you gain it,โ€ He means it.ย

โ€œCome, follow me,โ€ย Jesus said,ย โ€œand I will send you out to fish for people.โ€ย At once they left their nets and followed him.

Mark 1:17-18

All Jesus needed to do was extend a hand and Peter dropped his nets and abandoned everything to follow Him. His presence commanded authority and His voice was one of love, grace and comfort. Authority doesnโ€™t have to mean โ€œdictatorshipโ€ โ€“ it can also mean trusting, strong, stable and yes, comforting.ย

God wants to have amazing authority in your life because He wants to relieve you of the control, the worry, the anxiety and stress in which you toil. He wants to be the guiding light, the north star and compass that shows you which way is right. And when we give God total authority in our lives He does indeed show up in mighty ways. He takes control and leads us down paths we never thought we could venture down. His authority is the greatest thing that is available to everyone and anyone โ€“ all we have to do it trust him with our lives.

I donโ€™t know about you, but I am often relieved when I remember that itโ€™s King Jesus on the throne and not myself, not someone else, not idols or things. King Jesus is in control, and Iโ€™ve never felt more content in that truth โ€“ no matter what may come my way.ย

The very word “authority” has within it the word “author. ” An author is someone who creates and possesses a particular work. Insofar as God is the foundation of all authority, He exercises that foundation because He is the author and the owner ofย His creation. He is the foundation upon which all other authority stands or falls.

A Bold Forgiveness

A Bold Story by Andrea Cisneros

How did I know asking God to help me forgive my sister in law would lead to a deeply spiritual experience? I didnโ€™t of course.

It all started a few weeks ago when my dear friend Kris invited me to be a part of her boldness challenge group. She instructed us to write down 3-5 bold actions you have always wanted to do.  After praying I created this list:

  1. Play classical piano again.
  2. Become more than a surface level Christian.
  3. Break free from the need to control everything so that I can cope with my anxiety: therefore being filled with life again
  4. Finally deal with my unforgiveness toward my sister-in-law and my step daughter

As I read other boldness challenger lists I thought to myself that my list seemed very unimpressive. But I moved forward with my list. I had no idea how to completely forgive my sister-in-law and step daughter as their past hurt had happened many years ago. So again, I reached out for Godโ€™s hand.

During this same time, my husband and I were in discussion about our annual Mammoth five-day tent camping trip with my husbandโ€™s side of the family. This was not the year to go! Not with Covid19.  I did everything in my power to make this trip not happen. Covid19 was my main excuse. After all, we would have to share the public bathrooms and showers with everyone at the camp site. Who wants to do that these days? But my real reason was spending all this time with my husbandโ€™s sister. Four years ago, she was very frustrated with her brother, my husband, and she said some very hurtful things.  Things that Iโ€™ve held onto. I felt I had a right to after all, she was out of line and never should have said the things she said. Now you must know that she did apologize to me three years ago with an excuse that I deemed lame and so I didnโ€™t accept her apology or forgive her. I didnโ€™t know how to get beyond myself and my inability to forgive so I gave it to God as we headed to Mammoth last week.

There is a back story here that I didnโ€™t plan for: healing from my anxiety and a need to control everything. It has been pretty crippling. My husband created a “man cave” and he chose pictures to hang on the wall from our first trip to Mammoth trip 10 years ago. As I looked at those pictures I remember how deeply moved I was to experience the beauty of the mountains and streams around the Mammoth area. I wanted to be that woman again — one who feels and sees and experiences the beauty of Godโ€™s creation. I didnโ€™t want to be defined by my anxiety anymore. Again, how do I get over this anxiety that rose out of nowhere following my motherโ€™s unexpected death two years ago? One week after that, my husband had brain surgery to completely rebuild his middle cerebral artery that had an aneurism which left him greatly compromised. His hospital stay was eight days instead of three. His doctor wanted to send him to a rehabilitation facility but I said I would care for him — 24 hours a day for months.  I was terrified and grief stricken from my motherโ€™s death but my focus was to help him get back on his feet. He returned to work March of that year but I was shocked to realize how much recovery was still needed. I cared for him as he slowly returned to normalโ€ฆa new normal. Then August of that year, my oldest sister died.  That all being said Iโ€™m dealing with a form of PTSD according to my doctor.

The day before we left for Mammoth I watched the news. It was all about the spike in numbers of virus cases. I texted my friend that I was struggling with giving this camp trip to God when it seemed so risky. As she has always done, she challenged me that I once again was making an excuse to not be with my sister-in-law for five days. She said, โ€œThis may sound morbid but you could die tomorrow in a car accident on the way there. Do you want to stand in front of God and say proudly, โ€˜I trusted you fully!โ€™?โ€. Thanking her once again for being so honest I told her I had been looking at the pictures my husband put on the wall in his man cave.  I want to be that woman again. I want to live free from fears. I want to see the beauty that surrounds me. I want to feel Godโ€™s glory in His creation. My friend said I should change all the โ€œwantsโ€ to โ€œwillโ€ and read this out loud in front of the mirror.  And then tighten my belt of truth and sharpen my sword. The battle was on!

The morning we left, my devotional was about forgiving 100%! Not 90% or even 99% but 100%. Unforgiveness doesnโ€™t look good on Christians!  Our first night at camp was disastrous as our air mattress kept leaking and three times that night we woke up to inflate the darn thing. As I lay awake most of the night, I kept surrendering everything to God. Asking Him to give me the energy to enjoy the next day even though I hadnโ€™t slept. I was surprised when I was urged by the Holy Spirit to forgive my husband. Why? Because he has lingering memory issues from his brain surgery he forgets a lot of things. Like the fact that the air mattress had issues when he used it last time. He forgets a lot of things like peopleโ€™s names. Small things really but this wasnโ€™t the person I married. I was greatly annoyed.  So now Iโ€™m being asked to forgive him because, โ€he didnโ€™t do this on purpose.โ€ OK.

We started the next day focused on repairing the air mattress. Then off we went to kayak Twin Lakes. What a magnificent experience! The sky was so blue and the air so fresh. We paddled around and saw a beautiful waterfall. There were duck families on the water. I was up close and personal with Godโ€™s creation and I was brought to tears. Later the same day we did a short hike to McCloud Lake. I was the woman from 10 years ago! I was filled with awe and wonder.

We had many experiences that were wonderful and brought tears to my eyes as I experienced fully the glorious creation of God but sleep was not one of them. The second night, sleep was the same and as I surrendered everything to God, I was urged to forgive myself. What? I have been through a traumatic year and a half with everything that has occurred. So I need to forgive myself for not being the person I used to be — that person in those pictures my husband has on his man cave wall.

Each day we spent our evenings around the campfire and to my surprise one night my sister-in-law said to me, โ€œI love you Andrea.โ€ With tears in my eyes I said, “I love you too” and I meant it. Finally I had forgiven her after all those years. This is what Godโ€™s forgiveness looks like. Love! I realized that it is up to me to replace my bad memories of what was said to me years ago with the new memories I made this trip to Mammoth. I will play the new memories we made — memories of love and forgiveness not 90% or even 99% but 100%. Thank you, God, for using me in an amazing way and allowing me to be made new again.
