Day 17 Goodness of God

And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
    for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,  Luke 1:76

The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,  Lamentations 3:25

In one of my Bible study groups I asked what in our lives do we struggle to completely turn over to God. Being all women, it wasn’t surprising that most answered our children. We worry, we fear, we hover, we protect. We lay away at night thinking of their future. We pray continuously for those who aren’t yet saved.

For so many of us, however, that role becomes overwhelming and overbearing. It puts our relationships with our children and maybe even our spouses in peril. The solution? To see God as not only our father but the good father who loves our children even more than we do, which seems impossible. When I finally turned my adult children over to God, I first had to trust Him and know Him. I had to realize how good He is and how much He loves me too.

Now imagine the parents of John the Baptist. His father, Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied the enormous responsibility his just born son would be required to put on his shoulders. Both his mother and father seemed to understand the weight of the role in announcing the coming Messiah. A role I don’t think most parents would want for their children. A nice quiet life as a fisherman with a wife who bears him many children – yes, that’s what Elizabeth probably wanted for John.

But no. John became a bit odd. He wore strange clothes and ate bugs. He spoke to anyone who would listen about the Messiah. His message was sometimes confusing and almost heretical. Yet we don’t see in scripture his parents lamenting. They probably did. But I would surmise based on the prophecy and Elizabeth’s faithfulness that they lamented to God.

They lifted their son up to the God Most High for protection and direction. They trusted in His goodness. I’m sure if they were still alive when John sat in his final jail cell they wept. But they also knew their son had been faithful to God and the Messiah had been faithful to him. And as a parent, what more, truly should we ask.

Day 16 Come Jesus Come

You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.For, “In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.”  Hebrews 10:36-37

Even youths grow tired and weary,
    and young men stumble and fall;
³¹but those who hope in the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
    they will run and not grow weary,
    they will walk and not be faint.  Isaiah 40: 30-31

I wonder how many times the apostles and the other disciples just fell to their knees in desperation and cried out for Jesus to return? I can only imagine over the last 2,000 years there’s been hundreds and hundreds of the faithful that have done the same.

It’s a sad truth that modern Christians come from a long line of faithful martyrs who were put to death by rulers afraid of losing power. Men who have felt threatened by people who proclaim, “I am Christian.”

In the United States, we have enjoyed a long run of a majority Christian society. Never facing the intense persecution so many who founded the country faced As we watch our societies across the world transform into a minority who would state in front of a mob, “I am Christian,” we too may be tempted to cry out for Jesus to come.

There’s so much in this song, “Come Jesus Come” that I love. The truth of the world when Jesus does return – no more war, no more pain — is something I too long for. On the other hand, my eldest daughter is yet to be saved. All my Christian friends have at least one child of whom their prayers for salvation are constant. I want one more day to pray that the Lord shake the scales from their eyes.

It’s a conundrum which Paul faced in his letters to the Philippians. He longed to see the face of Jesus yet he also knew he was commissioned to bring as many to Christ as possible while still breathing.

It’s a romantic thought to want Jesus to come today when we are facing terrible trials – sickness, death, financial loss, feelings of abandonment, being a victim of a crime. We want Him to come and provide the salve that erases it all. Until then, however, we are encouraged to persevere. To grow in faith through our adversity. To be an example to our unsaved loved ones who need to see the light of Jesus on our faces.

Deep down we long for Him, to take us home or to come and make this place home. Until then, we live in the hope of the glory to come.

Day 15 Fear of God

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour…And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 1 Peter 5:8-& 10

He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure.  Isaiah 33:6

The fear of God. I’m not sure if there’s a more misused and misunderstood statement in the Bible by unbelievers. The Websters dictionary first lists this definition of fear: “an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger.” And you could certainly say there were people in the Bible who stood in that type of fear of God. The armies who faced Joshua were fearful of his god who gave him miraculous victories. The soldiers who came to arrest Jesus were said to have drawn back and fell to the ground in fear when He revealed himself to them (John 17:6).

But that type of fear doesn’t always bring what the dictionary describes further: : “profound reverence and awe especially toward God.” That’s the type of fear the Israelites felt after they saw the power God brought against Pharoah. Exodus 14:31 says, “they believed in the Lord and his servant Moses.” It’s the same fear or awe of God which Rahab the prostitute experienced when she heard of the power of God against Joshua’s enemies. It’s why she helped Joshua’s spies. She believed, just like 11 of the first 12 apostles.

It seems hard to believe that anyone who witnesses the power and awe of God would just remain fearful and not reverential. Yet Judas did just that.

Today the power of God is seen as “mother nature” or a “big bang.” God’s miraculous healing is called chance or science. Blessings are considered accidents or coincidences. And people fear a god who would put His will upon them, taking away their independence.

Satan is pleased when we sit in ignorance or fear rather than awe. That’s because awe and submission bring people into the promised land of salvation and out of the hands of the devil.

Friend, God is the Lord of Hosts, the leader of all spiritual armies. He is the creator of all things seen and unseen. He is the giver of all good things. He is fighting battles on our behalf right now and in a blink of an eye the world could change. We may not win every battle we go through here on earth but He will win the war. That’s a God we should hold in reverence.

Day 14 Lion

Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wailon account of him. Even so. Amen. Revelation 1:7

Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. Fire goes before him and burns up his adversaries all around.  His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees andtrembles. The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth. Psalm 97:1-6

So often when we share our faith we talk about the gentle love of God. He comforts us in our sorrows. He counsels us in our pain. He provides for us in our time of need. While this is all true, we can’t forget the basis for why we can be comforted. Why we know one day our pain will disappear. The hope that we have through God’s promised victory is the foundation for all that we believe. That one day we will stand beside our conqueror, Christ, in heaven.

Our gentle Lamb of God is the Lion of Judah. The God who destroyed evil nations, who moves mountains, who promises that justice will be His in the final battle, that is also our God. While we may romanticize Jesus during His time here on earth as humble and gentle, we need to remember the Jesus who cleared the temple with a whip. The one who called the Pharisees, who distorted the Word of God, vipers and evildoers. He was quiet and gentle at times because of a strength that no man can imagine.

When we feel sorrow over the ways of this world, we need to remember two truths. The first is that nothing that is happening is new. The words of Peter, James, Paul, and Jesus attest to that. The disciples who were killed for nothing more than proclaiming their faith in God’s son are just another scene played out for centuries before and after. Injustice, violence and evil perpetrated by people who deny the sovereignty of God.

If we sit and marinate in the knowledge of these evils, we too dismiss the second truth – the power of God and promise of things to come. It is that power and the written account of future events which lift us. We see the glory of God bringing His sword of justice to all mankind. With no one escaping judgement. No one.

We don’t know the day or time. But we should always plan as though it is today. Acting, speaking, loving, and doing in such a way as Jesus has ordained us. Spreading the word of His coming justice to truly ease our pain. And the hope of salvation from eternal damnation. Through our belief in Jesus Christ, who died for our punishable sins, we can stand in assurance of God’s coming roaring, glory.

Day 13 Blessings Everywhere

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11: 28-30

From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised! Psalms 113:3

I’ve given this assignment to women I’ve discipled in the past. For a week keep a small notebook with you. As you go through your day make note of all the good things around you or that have been given you. It might be you found a deal while shopping, a nice text was sent you, or even just that you had a good night sleep. If nothing seems obvious that day there’s always the fact that you had a place to sleep, food in your refrigerator, the sun rose again and you received one more day to serve the Lord.

I’ll admit this assignment was born out of the fact that I’ve lived most of my life as a pessimistic person. When I started my day what first was on my mind were the problems I faced or imagined. Nothing was going to work out the way I’d hoped. If it did, I’m sure something else bad would happen to ruin it. What an exhausting, burdensome way to live. But my friend, I know for certain I’m not the only one to suffer this way of existence.

I thought positive people, especially Christians, were just blind to reality. And I was sure I’d be the one cleaning up the mess they never imagined. Not only was this prideful it’s not the reality of God. There may be some truth to this way of thinking because this world is full of evil, riddled with tragedy and pain. But when we seek to live for Christ and become yoked with Him, He opens our eyes to the new sunrise each day. He removes the scales and a whole new world is open to us.

Our new reality, which can only be achieved through the belief in our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit’s power, leads us down a path that sees our breath each day as a blessing. That acknowledges so much beauty and good around us, especially in times of trouble. Sometimes we just need God to help us see it. There truly are blessings wherever we go or wherever we stay. Thank you Lord.

Day 11 The Goodness

I am the bread of life.  John 6:48

Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death.  Proverbs 14:26-27

I was talking with a young woman recently who was raised in the Christian faith and at 18 went off to Bible college for a few semesters. At 19, she dropped out, got married, and was soon pregnant. At 21, her husband abandoned their family. Soon after, she abandoned Jesus.

You see when calamity hit, her faith was revealed to be built on the sand Jesus warns us about in Matthew 7:24-27. Her house fell after the windy, stormy beating. How could that be? She was surrounded by the faithful for all her life up until then. Isn’t that enough?

Let’s look at our faith this way. If I hung around a bunch of people who loved baking and I enjoyed eating what they made, it wouldn’t make me a baker. It’d make me fat, however! I would have knowledge of baking, the process, the ingredients, the do’s and don’ts. Without the love of baking and actually getting my hands covered in flour I’d just be an observer.

It’s not the doing that makes us Christians it’s the surrendered belief that Jesus loves us so much He died for our sins, was buried, and rose again in the witnessed resurrection. He becomes our secure fortress, our daily provision, and fountain of life. He holds us tight through every tragedy and every windfall in our life. We soon find Him at work everywhere. He keeps showing up.

When Toby Mac wrote this song it was after the death of his adult son from an overdose. Of course, it was tragic. Of course, he was full of tears and heartache. But he had built his house on solid ground. He sought refuge in the Lord. The wind blew and the storm enveloped him. Eventually, the sun came out and he was able to walk out his door into the warm sunlight of God’s love.

As for that young woman? She is now happily married and I’m so glad to say she wants to know about Jesus and this Bread of Life. She wants to learn how to build her life so she too can withstand what this world throws at us. My prayer is that she will begin to see Jesus at work everywhere.

Day 10 Jireh

I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.  I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John 10:9-11

For the Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver; the Lord is our king; he will save us. Isaiah 33:22

Have you ever wondered why we need a constant intercessor in our lives if Jesus came and did the work of forgiveness for sins on the cross? Why, if I’ve been forgiven, do I need someone to keep taking my repentance to God? I’ve been reading Dane Ortlund’s book, Gentle and Lowly: The heart of Christ for sinners and sufferers. In the margin on one page about intercession I wrote, “Good question!” The answer, written out in subsequent pages was beautiful and revealing. But it’s these short examples which solidified the answer:

Think of an older brother cheering on his younger brother in a track meet. Even if, in that final stretch, the younger brother is well out ahead and will certainly win the race, does the older brother sit back, quiet, complacently satisfied? Not at all — he’s yelling at the top of his lungs exclamations of encouragement, of affirmations, of celebration, of victory, of solidarity. He cannot be quieted. “

Picture a glider, pulled up into the sky by an airplane, soon to be released to float down to earth. We are that glider; Christ is the plane. But He never disengages. He never lets go, wishing us well, hoping we can glide the rest of the way into heaven. He carries us all the way.”

When Jesus calls himself our shepherd He means it for life. Once He gathers us up into His flock he doesn’t stop caring for us, feeding us, protecting us, and cheering us on. We go astray from God’s Law looking for better grass and He calls us back. He provides everything we need until the sun goes down on our life and we are united in heaven. He is continuously bringing us before the Father with joy.

This is a love more than most of us can imagine. He loved us while we were still sinners – because that’s what we still are every single day. And He keeps rinsing us off and standing beside us before a Holy God. He is enough for us. Because He is all we need to stand before God, we can believe we are enough too.

Day 9 Another In The Fire

for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”  Hebrews 13:5-6

It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you.  Do not fear or be dismayed.  Deuteronomy 31:8

According to studies, about 40 percent of Americans reported regularly feeling lonely in 2010. But loneliness isn’t just about how many friends you have or if you are around family. It’s also not about solitude, which many people enjoy and seek at times. More recent research tells us that loneliness is more about the quality of those relationships.

My friend Andrea and I recently embarked on a volunteer discipleship program where we connect with people who see posts about Jesus on-line through PeaceWithGod.net. People from all over the world can connect with Christians and ask all manner of questions about our faith. If they so desire, they can take a free discipleship course that goes deeper into our relationship with God. After just two days of volunteering, I realized a sad truth – people are desperate to be seen and feel connection.

God seems to have blessed us with this innate desire to be in communion, not only with other humans, but with the Creator, Himself. We feel alone when those connections are broken or maybe have never come to fruition. And for some reason we tend to pull away from the one source of never-ending, lavish love Jesus gave us a glimpse of while here in the flesh.

We turn to fleshly desires to quench this need. Food, sexual pleasures, escapism, alcohol, drugs, shopping, hobbies – all distractions from the fountain of life. They all stand between us and God.

Friend, if you are feeling lonely or abandoned by those who should love you come to Jesus. He is the other one in the fire of life protecting you. He wants to shower you with love and bring you into His glorious light. You need only believe that this God sent His son to die for us and re-unite us with Him. He’s waiting in the battle you face right now to give you His peace, give you His joy.

Day 8 Honey In The Rock

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not much more valuable than they?  Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? Matthew 6:26-27

By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas; Psalm 65:5

There’s been a few times in my 36 years of marriage when we experienced serious financial loss. The first time it was devastating. I felt lost and unsure of our future. It was hard not blaming and feeling angry. I wasn’t a woman of faith at the time so I turned inward to chastise myself over and over and then outward condemning anyone associated with the loss. I dwelt over it, turning the situation around in my head during endless, sleepless nights. Each time I drove past the business project in which we had invested the scab was re-opened and for days I would feel those same feelings all over again.

Fast forward many years when my husband’s business and another investment came under dramatic assault due to Covid restrictions and fear. We saw all that we had built potentially crumbling beneath us. This loss was potentially greater, effecting our retirement and even our home. This time, however was different.

I frequently found myself at peace. Sure, I’d get scared. I’d worry about the stress my husband was under. This time I had someone to tell me there was a purpose to the plan. To tell me He would give us the manna and the honey because He is the Lord who provides.

We have two choices to make when difficulties attack our lives. We can turn to our emotions and fears or we can turn to Jesus. When we allow our fears to take over, we get angry, we blame, we get depressed. For people like me I wear myself out alternately beating myself up (you shouldn’t have taken that vacation last year! That money could help us now!) or obsessing over how to fix an unfixable problem. For some they withdraw from the world all together feeling hopeless.

When I finally learned, and most of all believed, that God is who we turn to satisfy and squash our fears I experienced freedom. He is a miracle worker. He can bring water from a stone. Turn water into wine. No matter what we face in the coming years we need to remember to seek God for all we need. Pray, praise and trust then repeat.

Day 7 Thank God I Do

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.  Philippians 3:20-21

Those the Lord has rescued will return.
    They will enter Zion with singing;
    everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy will overtake them,
    and sorrow and sighing will flee away. Isaiah 51:11

The last five years or so have been a hard road for many of us. We have the ever-looming backdrop of the COVID years which still seems to find its way into many of our conversations. Businesses ruined, relationships lost, precious time with loved ones taken away, social and educational interruptions — the effects will be us for some time. But that was just a moment in time, really.

Sickness, depression, death, loneliness, financial struggles, relationship pains have been with us since the beginning of our time outside Eden. We so easily can live afraid. Some do. They don’t leave their homes or they pull back from others afraid of being hurt or damaged even more.

As a Christian we are not immune to these trials. According to Jesus we should expect more problems when we put our trust and faith in the Lord. We end up bucking the systems, cause rifts in our families and friends when we don’t just “go along.”

But as this song reminds us, thank God we have Him. Thank God He gave us the Holy Spirit to comfort us, to guide us, and to counsel us. He creates a “new self,” sloughing off our old self – transforming us one day completely into crown wearers. Giving us the hope that so many don’t have that on that day we will walk into heaven singing in gladness and joy because all our pain is gone, forever.

In the meantime, we can rest in God’s daily provisions for our life, our daily bread. He holds us close in His hands. He is our safe place, our hideaway, our anchor, our saving grace, our constant.
