Amazing Proof

Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.ย When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

When Jesus saw their faith, he said,ย โ€œFriend, your sins are forgiven.โ€

The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, โ€œWho is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?โ€

Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked,ย โ€œWhy are you thinking these things in your hearts?ย Which is easier: to say, โ€˜Your sins are forgiven,โ€™ or to say, โ€˜Get up and walkโ€™?ย But I want you to know that the Son of Manย has authority on earth to forgive sins.โ€ย So he said to the paralyzed man,ย โ€œI tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.โ€ย Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.ย 26ย Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.ย They were filled with awe and said, โ€œWe have seen remarkable things today.โ€

Luke 5:18-26

โ€œFollow the science.โ€ย ย โ€œBelieve in science.โ€ย ย Sound familiar?ย ย And yet throughout this year โ€œscienceโ€ seems to not be the concrete โ€œsaviorโ€ so many want it to be.ย ย I once had a woman tell me she wears her mask to โ€œshow her love for meโ€ because science says itโ€™ll somehow save me that she is wearing a mask.ย ย While Iโ€™m not here to debate wearing or not wearing a mask I can tell you that her wearing a mask doesnโ€™t prove to me she loves me.ย ย Iโ€™m appreciative when someone doesnโ€™t sneeze or cough in my face but I donโ€™t consider that a proof of their love for me either โ€“ itโ€™s just courteous.

We are a people that love proof.ย ย So often the proof we desire is that which validates our own opinions โ€“ even in the face of completely opposite proof.ย ย My father is an atheist.ย ย While I donโ€™t expect everyone to suddenly be a Christian, the idea of not believing there is a Divine Entity that had its hand it creating us and the universe seems so, well, unscientific.ย ย But just like the pharisees and teachers of the law in the verses today, sometimes we just have a hard time believing even when something amazing is happening right in front of our face.ย ย ย They were so focused on their twisted version of the Law they couldnโ€™t even allow the people to glorify God when faced with miracles.

And then Jesus.ย ย Just the simple fact that the paralytic manโ€™s friends knew that if they could just get him close to Jesus, he would be healed was amazing.ย ย Where was their proof?ย ย To passersby watching them up on the roof trying to lower him down might have scoffed and thought they were crazy.ย ย But to the friends, they had only heard of Jesusโ€™ miracles and put their faith in the unknown.ย ย For the people inside the house watching Jesus heal the man they had all the proof they needed as to who He was.ย ย And yet their sticking point was Jesus forgiving the manโ€™s sins.ย ย The healing proof still wasnโ€™t enough for them.

I so frequently see things in nature, not just the amazing ecosystem God created for us humans to survive, but also the heart wrenching beauty and think, โ€œHow can anyone not believe there is a God?โ€  What more proof do they need?  Our bodies are fine tuned to this earth.  The circular systems of creating breathable air, water to drink, food to eat, and sunshine and darkness for our bodies to succeed are really all the proof we should need.

My husband and I got four baby chicks back in March.ย ย They are now big, beautiful ladies that lay eggs daily.ย ย I asked my husband the other day, โ€œIs there any other animal on this planet that works so hard to feed us humans?โ€ย ย The chicken, according to the Smithsonian, dates back between 7,000 to 10,000 years.ย ย Itโ€™s mentioned both in the Old and New Testaments.ย ย And if you look up a picture of the innards of a chicken youโ€™ll see it is quite simple.ย ย In fact, it seems its sole purpose it to lay eggs.ย ย ย Thereโ€™s really nothing fancy and yet they are amazingly fascinating.ย ย The process by which an egg ends up being an egg seems magical.ย ย And yet it happens every, single day.ย ย Each time I collect eggs I thank the ladies for their hard work.ย ย Because I know the next step for that egg will be something delicious โ€“ nourishment for my husband before he heads off to work, a small but important part in homemade cinnamon rolls, the key ingredient to a souffle.ย ย The chicken was made specifically to lay eggs โ€“ fertilized or not.ย ย And we were made to eat them.

And yet we still want proof.ย ย When I hear non-believers ask for proof I just smile.ย ย They are their own proof.ย ย Their amazingly complicated body system โ€“ the most complicated of all the animals on the planet โ€“ thatโ€™s their proof.ย ย Every breath we take, thatโ€™s our proof.ย ย And the fact that we are the only species to yearn for a purpose on this globe, to question why we are here, is even more proof.ย ย ย Sometimes the proof we seek is in the absence of something.ย ย For the pharisees, they wanted proof that Jesus could forgive sins.ย ย And yet they witnessed a God-given miracle right in front of their faces.ย ย

25 Amazing Facts About the Human Body by Mental Floss

How much amazing proof are you overlooking every day?ย ย Every single minute of every single hour we take a breath, God proves His existence.ย ย The โ€œscienceโ€ surrounds us.ย ย It is us.ย ย We are His amazing proof.

Amazingly Interrupted

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,ย the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.ย He saw at the waterโ€™s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.ย He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,ย โ€œPut out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.โ€

Simon answered, โ€œMaster,ย weโ€™ve worked hard all night and havenโ€™t caught anything.ย But because you say so, I will let down the nets.โ€

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.ย So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesusโ€™ knees and said, โ€œGo away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!โ€ย  For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,ย and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simonโ€™s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon,ย โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid;ย from now on you will fish for people.โ€ย So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Luke 5:1-11

I think a lot of us feel like 2020 has been one giant interruption in our lives.ย ย We had beautiful weddings planned, vacations to experience, new jobs on the horizon, a blossoming business, a full retirement schedule.ย ย And then February descended upon us.ย ย To put it mildly itโ€™s been one giant cluster.ย ย Recently, I saw an Instagram post by the Christian womenโ€™s group Proverbs 31 that addressed our need to rely on God during these tough times.ย ย One of the commentors posted a very distraught list of what she has been dealing with, including the loss of a loved one.ย ย She said she was having a hard time seeing God in the middle of everything.ย ย And yet He is right there if we truly know His character.ย ย Heโ€™s the one interrupting our plans.

In the verses today Simon, an experienced fisherman, had just pulled his boat in after a long, hard, unsuccessful day of fishing.  He sat and listened to Jesus as he preached to the masses on the shore.  Suddenly, Jesus asks for a ride out away from the shore to better speak to everyone.  Iโ€™m sure Simon had a mix of emotions.  Here he was, probably dead tired but still might have been honored to have the famous rabbi use his boat.  And then Jesus really interrupted his plans to get home, have dinner and finally get some sleep.  The experienced fisherman was quite sure that another few hours out on the lake would produce nothing โ€“ he should know heโ€™d been a fisherman on that lake all his life.  Jesus wasnโ€™t even from a fishing family!  But something about the rabbi made Simon comply.  And as the story finishes, we see Simon and the other fisherman completely interrupting everything about their lives and deciding to become disciples.

God frequently tries to interrupt our โ€œbright ideasโ€ and โ€œbest laid plans.โ€ย ย The question for us is when we hear or feel His Holy Spirit urging us to take a new direction are we like Simon, willing to comply?ย ย ย ย Or are we like the rich king, unwilling to give up what we have and know?ย ย So many of us say we want God to speak to us but do we really?ย ย

A couple years ago I was amazingly interrupted by Jesus.ย ย I worked as an administrative substitute in our local school district.ย ย I was very busy.ย ย And I wore that busyness as a badge of honor.ย ย ย I had jobs assigned five days a week.ย ย And then Jesus interrupted me.ย ย He urged me, through a vision, to take specific action each week and feed the homeless for a year.ย ย This was not in my plans.ย ย But it was something I had asked for.ย ย I had been praying for growth in my trust in the Lord.ย ย I kept asking for direction.ย ย Feeding the homeless in our large downtown was never on my radar.ย ย What also wasnโ€™t in my plan was giving up working a few days a week to accomplish Jesusโ€™ vision for me.ย ย It was an amazing interruption.ย

ย

He said, โ€œDo this for me.โ€ย ย And I did.ย ย The lessons I learned during that year were ones that no sermon or Bible study could ever teach me.ย ย My patterns of worry, distrust, control, over-planning, pride, feeling alone, all were tested.ย ย It was never about feeding the homeless.ย ย It was about God finding a way to snap me out of destructive patterns โ€“ interrupting me and re-setting me.

Theย Lordย blessed the latter part of Jobโ€™s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys.ย And he also had seven sons and three daughters.

Job 42:12-13

Iโ€™ve told many people about this experience.ย ย And, at the same time I tell them they should pray for something equally amazing to interrupt their lives.ย ย So many of them either look scared or even voice their fear of such an occurrence.ย ย Thatโ€™s why I ask, โ€œDo you really want to hear from God?โ€ย ย Because I can almost guarantee that what He says to you will be unexpected and will challenge you to interrupt your life.ย ย But like Job whose life was severely interrupted, the amazing blessings you receive will be immeasurable.ย ย God has interrupted my life a few more times since my vision. And each time has brought me closer to Him. I urge you today to pray for interruption.ย ย To pray to do Godโ€™s work.ย ย To pray that He asks to guide your boat out into the open water.

Amazingly Healed

Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit

โ€œWhen they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them.ย As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

ย โ€œWhat are you arguing with them about?โ€ย he asked.

ย A man in the crowd answered, โ€œTeacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech.ย Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.โ€

โ€œYou unbelieving generation,โ€ย Jesus replied,ย โ€œhow long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.โ€ So, they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

Jesus asked the boyโ€™s father,ย โ€œHow long has he been like this?โ€ โ€œFrom childhood,โ€ he answered.ย โ€œIt has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.โ€

โ€œโ€˜If you canโ€™?โ€ย said Jesus.ย โ€œEverything is possible for one who believes.โ€ Immediately the boyโ€™s father exclaimed, โ€œI do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!โ€

When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene,ย he rebuked the impure spirit.ย โ€œYou deaf and mute spirit,โ€ย he said,ย โ€œI command you, come out of him and never enter him again.โ€ The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, โ€œHeโ€™s dead.โ€ย But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately,ย โ€œWhy couldnโ€™t we drive it out?โ€ He replied,ย โ€œThis kind can come out only by prayer.[a]โ€

Mark 9:14-29

My eldest daughter is a doctor of physical therapy.ย ย That alone is a miracle.ย ย She studied and worked hard throughout her public school years and yet the results were not always reflective of that work.ย ย Once she entered college she leaned on the lessons learned from getting help early and how to study.ย ย She excelled beyond belief.ย ย As a physical therapist she has seen the fruits of her labor โ€“ the healing power of her education.ย ย She has helped many women in the specialty of lower abdomen and uterine pain.ย ย Iโ€™m so proud of her.ย ย That being said, as my faith journey moves along, Iโ€™ve accepted that some healing only comes from prayer.

โ€œBegin to rejoice in the Lord, and your bones will flourish like an herb, and your cheeks will glow with the bloom of health and freshness.ย ย Worry, fear, distrust, careโ€”are all poisonous!ย ย Joy is balm and healing, and if you will but rejoice, God will give power.โ€

A.B. Simpson

I like this quote because it reminds me of an amazing healing I saw take place in a friend many years ago.ย ย She had fallen and broken her upper arm.ย ย For many months she went to doctorsโ€™ appointments and had all sorts of imaging.ย ย And yet her bone was not naturally re-growing and healing.ย ย It became the usual sight to see her in an arm sling that year.ย ย She was like a baby bird with a broken wing.ย ย Her disappointment after each doctorโ€™s appointment was evident.ย ย And yet she kept praying for healing.ย ย At the end of that painful year I still recall seeing her at church one day and she was full of joy!ย ย Her doctor, on the other hand was so perplexed.ย ย At her appointment that week she had another x-ray.ย ย And her bone was completely healed.ย ย The specialists had no explanation.ย ย But she knew the amazing answer.ย ย Her prayers were heard.

I love how the father in the Bible verse today has the guts to admit to Jesusโ€™ face that he has doubts.  โ€œIF you can do anythingโ€ is what he says.  And then asks for help in overcoming his unbelief.  My friend Betsy once shared a powerful prayer technique with my BSGs.  She said if you arenโ€™t ready to believe or take action then ask, in prayer, for help in believing.

How many of us, when faced with illness or injury arenโ€™t really sure God can heal?ย  So many of us tend to rely solely on our surgeons, psychologists, specialists, etc. And we forget to turn to God for healing or even to ask for His guiding hands for those gifted doctors. ย If you are unsure, pray to resolve your unbelief.ย ย When the disciples asked Jesus why they werenโ€™t able to cure the boy in this amazing Bible event he responded by telling them they needed to draw on the power of God through prayer.ย

The disciples had been careless with their personal spiritual walk and had neglected communing with God through prayer and fasting.

Warren Wiersbe, New Testament Bible Commentary

Notice this is not about praying โ€œenoughโ€ or being faithful โ€œenough.โ€ย ย Itโ€™s about praying and being faithful and believing.ย ย His amazing healing power is available to the faithful.ย ย And while we may not always know why or when He chooses to heal someone or not, we need to rest in trust that He has a plan far greater than ours.ย ย We must never stop praying and asking for His amazing healing power.

Amazed By His Will

After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the manโ€™s ears. Then he spitย and touched the manโ€™s tongue.ย He looked up to heavenย and with a deep sighย said to him,ย โ€œEphphatha!โ€ย (which meansย โ€œBe opened!โ€).ย At this, the manโ€™s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.ย But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it.ย People were overwhelmed with amazement. โ€œHe has done everything well,โ€ they said. โ€œHe even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.โ€

Mark 7:33-37

I love this story. Not just because itโ€™s a bit humorous in nature, I mean cโ€™mon, Jesus didnโ€™t HAVE to spit and touch the manโ€™s tongue to heal him or shout to the heavens to cure his deafness. He could have healed the man with no words and no actions, with just one look. But Jesusโ€™ actions show that He truly knew the hearts of the people. He had seen over and over again just how feeble the people were in their faith. He knew they needed clear evidence that He was who He said He was.ย

Even more amazing than Jesus concealing his immediate power to tend to the hearts of the people is the immediate authority he has over disease. The verses claim that at the sound of His voice, deafness falls and lameness disappears.ย In the face of Jesus, darkness cowers in fear.

Theย lightย shinesย inย theย darkness,ย andย theย darknessย hasย notย overcomeย it.

John 1:5

Just as this verse reminds us of Jesusโ€™ power over the dominion of darkness, let it also be a reminder that what He speaks will be done. Even more amazing, everything on earth and in heaven bows to His authority, because he is the one who created it all (Gen. 1:1).ย

Jesus told the manโ€™s ears to open and they opened. Jesus told Peter that there would come a day when he would deny him three times โ€“ and that day came. What the Lord spoke in prophesies in the Old Testament came to pass through His Son on the cross.ย

We see over and over again thatย God is a faithful God, who fulfills his promises to His people. Are you trusting in that truth today?ย  Be amazed today that God will keep all of the below promises to you, for He is a man of His Word.

  • Amidst your worry, anxiety and fear, I will give you restโ€ฆ. (Matt. 11:28)
  • Through my Sonโ€™s wounds on the cross, your brokenness has been redeemed (1 Peter 2:24)
  • I promise that your trials will produce joy (James 1:2)
  • I give strength to the weary (Isaiah 40:29)ย
  • I give wisdom to all those who ask of it. I will provide you everything you need for the situations you are in. (James 1:5)
  • I promise, that if you resist the devil HE WILL FLEE. (James 4:7)ย

Rest in these truths today. I encourage you to find more on your own. Take time to remember all of the things that have come to pass, the promises that have been fulfilled and ask God today for the strength and faith to believe that what He says, will be done, today, tomorrow and the next.ย

To Be Amazingly Singleminded

Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. All the people were astonished and said, โ€œCould this be the Son of David?โ€ But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, โ€œIt is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.โ€ Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, โ€œEvery kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Matthew 12:22-28

I love the part in these verses that states, โ€œJesus knew their thoughts.โ€  How amazing is it that right now, this very second, Jesus knows your thoughts?  He knows the thoughts of believers and non-believers.  What would He think about your thoughts right now?  Are they focused on the worries surrounding the election in the United States?  Are they worried about new virus-related shutdowns?  Are your thoughts of your precarious finances or your failing marriage?  Or, are they thoughts of how God has come through for you before and today is no different?  He has shown the way; he has opened doors before and this issue you face right now can be placed securely in His hands.

The โ€œpeople were astonished and said, โ€˜Could this be the Son of David?โ€™โ€  How often when God paves the way to solutions we might not have ever dreamt, that we even ask the question, โ€œcould this be Jesus?โ€  Or do we stand firm in single mindedness and state, โ€œThank you Lord.โ€? The Pharisees were so afraid of losing their power and control they wanted to be convinced that Jesus was healing with Satanโ€™s power.  And although when our prayers are answered we might not think Satan had something to do with it, how often do we just shrug and think of it as a coincidence?

Iโ€™ve written before of the struggles I have with my parents.  They are non-believers.  My father has stated he is an atheist.  And to put it mildly they are miserable.  They lead small, scared lives.  I was led this year to pray vehemently for them.  When I pray for them, I imagine the wall they have securely built around themselves.  A nice, sturdy brick tower.  Iโ€™ve asked God to break that wall down, to soften their hearts.  I know I canโ€™t do it.  It must be Godโ€™s actions.  And last week I had the chance to see their faces peeking through a few bricks that had been displaced.   Iโ€™ve offered to assist them during this difficult time of isolation.  Iโ€™ve brought them meals, puzzles, a Kindle.  Iโ€™ve offered to buy a meal service for them.  But each time Iโ€™ve been met with annoyance.  But last week I received a desperate text from my mother.  She explained they havenโ€™t been eating right and are very lonely.  So, I made up some meals and delivered them.  They were so grateful.  That may sound normal.  But grateful isnโ€™t normally in their vocabulary.  I lost track of how many times they thanked me.   As I drove away, I caught myself thinking like someone of this world โ€“ โ€œwell, finally they allowed me to help.  I couldโ€™ve been doing that all along.โ€  I forgot that this was not my doing.  A few blocks away I stopped my car and I prayed.  I prayed a grateful prayer to the Lord on High โ€“ the only way those bricks couldโ€™ve been removed.  I donโ€™t know if my parents will reach through and try and shore up those bricks again.  But for that day, that moment, I thanked God for allowing me to do His works and be His hands.  It was truly amazing.

โ€œGod opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.  Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.โ€

James 4:6-8

We canโ€™t continue to have one foot in for Jesus and one foot out.  Because that equation is actually both feet out.  In math, a positive times a negative is always negative.  The covenant with God is based on trust.  And when we vacillate between trusting Him and not, we allow Satan or worldly โ€œsolutionsโ€ to chip away at our peace.

Patterns are pointers.  They can very much reveal where a person is headed.  Positive patterns tend to produce productive outcomes.  Negative patterns canโ€™t help but produce negative impact.  Obedient patterns tend to produce closeness with God.  Disobedient patterns canโ€™t help but produce chaos and destruction.

Lysa Terkeurst, Trustworthy

So, when take for granted the miracles that Jesus works in and around our lives, what we are saying is we donโ€™t trust that itโ€™s Him.  Think of King David.  He was promised the kingdom but not only was it many years before he was made king, he had a target on his back by King Saul.  Put yourself in his shoes.  Many of us may have just given up and thought either God was lying or we misunderstood.  And, at the moment David had a chance to kill King Saul, he sought Godโ€™s counsel and remembered His promises.  But what if on the day he were crowned he said, โ€œFinally, I struggled and I fought and I accomplished this.โ€   David instead said,

Because of your promise, and according to your own heart you have brought about all this greatness to make your servant know it.  Therefore, you are great, O Lord God.  For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

2 Samuel 7:21-22

Take a moment and read the full text of 2 Samuel 7:18-29. You will read of a man amazed by the greatness of God.  A man amazed by the goodness of God.  A man amazed by how God is so trustworthy.  May we, this week in the midst of our fears and struggles and joys be so amazed.  May we stop the car, sit down, stop thinking and look up to the heavens and say โ€œI trust you fully God and I know that it is YOU at work.  I thank you for prayers fulfilled.โ€

Living Amazed

From the first day of Earth to today, God has been doing amazing things in our lives. And when Jesus preached and performed miracles, the Bible frequently says the people were amazed. Each day we get up to start a new day. Each day we put our feet on the floor, have breakfast, brush our teeth, and then go about our daily routine. We do the laundry, wash the dishes, log in another long day at work. It’s so easy to live in the humdrum of every day. But God is still doing amazing things!

I’ve spent much of my adult life being a pessimist. As I grew closer to Jesus it became almost impossible to continue looking at life, people and circumstances constantly from a negative point of view. God transformed me. And that, my friends, is pretty darn amazing.

Join me and my special guest writer as we explore all the amazing acts of Jesus starting November 1 through 29. My hope is that each day we will help you take these amazing Jesus acts and translate them into your amazing life.

A Helping Friend

When my youngest daughter and I started working on our relationship I prayed, a lot.  I prayed what to say the first summer she was home from college.  I prayed each time I visited her.  I asked God to put the right words in my mouth at the right time, with the right heart.  I prayed to have my need to feel hurt and offended by her words be taken from me.  I wanted God to change me so dramatically that my daughter could see that change.  She needed to see that I was doing the work on my own issues.  I had two God moments that have stuck with me during that time.  The first was the summer after her freshmen year.  I knew, from my older daughter, that life was going to change at our house.  We would now have four adults living in our home โ€“ no children.  And so, I prayed for the right words at the right time.   James has taught us so well that when we rely on God in times of trial that wonderous solutions come to us that we might never have thought.  I prayed that her newfound relationship with Jesus would also guide our conversations.

The last few words in the Book of James is really a summary.  He tells us to take all of the wisdom and expectations of the five chapters and work together for the glory of God.  To help those Christians who wander off Godโ€™s track and bring them back into his loving arms.  To guide our children to a life of grace, wisdom and forgiveness.

My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

James 5:19

Which brings me to the second of those God moments.  My daughter and I were on the phone having yet another tense conversation while she was back at school.  Full of misunderstandings and secret expectations (She has since told me she had long felt I had extremely high expectations of her and she didnโ€™t want to fail me).  I took a breath and prayed for God to speak through me.  I stopped talking.  I started listening.  And finally, the right words came.

Me: โ€œI have something to ask of you.โ€

Her: โ€œWhat?โ€

Me: โ€œI am working really hard on trusting God to handle a lot of stuff โ€“ including my fears and hopes and dreams for you.โ€

Her: โ€œUh uh.โ€

Me: โ€œBut I fail, a lot.  Iโ€™m very impressed how you give a lot of grace and forgiveness to your friends, coaches, and teachers.  What Iโ€™m asking for is that you give me some of that same grace and forgiveness for when I fail.โ€

Pin drop.  Godโ€™s words not only diffused the situation but it called on her to look on her own faith.  It asked her to treat me just like any other Christian to whom she shows love.  It took me out of being โ€œjust her momโ€ to being a person.  God was doing a mighty work in that moment.

On a “back to school” road trip

As Christians we probably have Christian friends.  We might have Christian children and spouses.  We should have the expectation to which James exhorts us, which is to help keep our brothers and sisters on track.  We might cringe at that thinking, again, we donโ€™t want to be judgmental people.  But by relying on our faith and reminding others of their faith helps us all to grow closer to Christ.  Itโ€™s that Imperfect Progress my Bible study girls like to talk about.

What is more worthwhile than saving someone from death and covering a multitude of sin?

Faith That Works

If we are in the mindset that our faith is ours and ours alone, we wonโ€™t reach out and bring others to Christ. We wonโ€™t help our brethren when they fall. I was in a Bible study group once where a woman stated she had never had a conversation about Christ with someone other than people at her church. She seemed ok with that. It made me sad. I know that God had put multiple people in her life along the way (she was in her 80s) to help do His work. I know that because that is Godโ€™s nature.

Every person you meet is providential, not accidental.

Phil Hopper, Pastor, Abundant Life Church

So often we think about going out to foreign countries to share our faith when in our own homes and neighborhoods and schools and play groups and Bunco groups and dinner clubs there are people who need Christ.  There are Christians who need our support.  Itโ€™s one thing to gain wisdom from studying His Word and yet another to actually use that wisdom to glorify God.

May we be lumps of salt in the midst of society.

Charles Spurgeon

I like that visual.  To be placed around our neighborhoods and cities for the people to gain something good.  We arenโ€™t to be stockpiling our salt for our own personal use.  We should be anticipating those moments God says, “Here, help my beloved.”

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.  Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.

Phillipians 2: 3-4

In other words, if we look at our salvation as a gift from God, we must also share that gift.  We must also share the love and teachings of Jesus.  By using Jesusโ€™ ways as our touchstone, we can guide others along the way.

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another โ€“ and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10: 24-25

My daughter now will give me biblically based advice when I am struggling.  She reminds me to lean into and on God.  She gently pushes me closer to Jesus.  I had a older friend, who at the beginning of the Covid19 crisis, I checked in on.  I considered him a leader in our church, a man of strong faith.  He was distraught and depressed. He said to me, โ€œI just canโ€™t see God in any of this to be honest.โ€  And me, a person who struggles with memorizing any scripture spoke these words back to him: โ€œYou must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a boat on the waves of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.โ€ (James 1:6) This man of great faith was silent.  And then he said, โ€œThank you.โ€

As a Christian, I need my Christian friends and family to remind me of the promises God has made.  I need nudges back toward His light.  I may even need a whack over the head once in a while.  If we choose not to help each other, think of all the opportunities we have missed to glorify Him and the people we will not have helped save from death. And as for my older daughter, I pray every day of my role in bringing her to Christ. More importantly, I pray that a Christian friend of hers will tell her their testimony and invite her on The Way.`

Powerful Prayer

Last Christmas, my new son-in-law sat reading a large paperback book.ย ย I asked him about it.ย ย He introduced me to โ€œSpurgeon On Prayer & Spiritual Warfare,โ€ a 575-page book filled with Charles Spurgeonโ€™s sermons on prayer.ย ย There are prayers on why to pray, how to pray, what to pray, and even when to pray.ย ย After skimming over my son-in-lawโ€™s copy, I decided I needed my own copy.ย ย Iโ€™ve only scratched the surface of the 54 sermons, but Iโ€™ve come to realize two important things about prayer: 1) Do it and 2) Do it earnestly.

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

James 5:16

How many of us truly believe in the power of prayer?ย ย Letโ€™s back up a bit.ย ย How many of us Christians truly believe that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Light?ย ย Unfortunately, I know quite a few people who say they are Christians but wonโ€™t stand up with assuredness that this statement is true.ย ย We are so wrapped up in the idea of being judgemental โ€“ telling people their way isnโ€™t the right way โ€“ that we are willing to give up this foundation stone.ย ย We want to put the capstone on our faith by calling ourselves โ€œChristiansโ€ without the foundation.ย ย In doing so, we shove aside all the teachings of Jesus and how to express our faith out of love, rather than judgement.ย ย We also tear down the place Jesus holds in the eternal world.

Letโ€™s say we accept the statement that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Light.ย ย We are now miles ahead of the Pharisees.ย ย This was their stumbling block.ย ย So, if we accept this, we need to then look at prayer from that vantage point.ย ย When Jesus is our Way and our Truth then we also accept God as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.ย ย And throughout scripture we are almost begged by God and Jesus to bring Him our trials, our joys, our sorrows, and our sins.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Philippians 4:6

Notice scripture doesnโ€™t say โ€œwell, only when you feel you need to pray.โ€ย ย It also doesnโ€™t say to just pray when we are sick or worried.ย ย In EVERY situation we are to pray.ย ย Upon waking, eating breakfast, hopping in our car for work (or on our computer), when a friend or colleague starts gossiping, when a friend texts you with bad news, when you look out your window and see a blue sky, when you eat lunch, when you are working on a project, when you head home from work, arrive home safely (or after an accident), when you eat dinner, when you start worrying about things on the nightly news, when you lay your head down to sleep.ย ย EVERY situation.

Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray.ย ย Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.ย ย Is anyone among you sick?ย ย Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them.

James 5:13-14

I have to confess that God has revealed a painful truth to me about my prayer life.ย ย When I am most worried about a situation is when I have the most difficult time praying.ย ย I have a hard time slowing my mind down, focusing on Jesus, and asking Him to take control.ย ย ย Back when I was a softball coach, I couldnโ€™t stand watching a game when I was off the field.ย ย I wanted to yell out directions to the players (I yell at the TV too).ย ย But when I took my seat in the head coachโ€™s spot, I would become calm.ย ย Itโ€™s because I had some control over the situation.ย ย So, when I need to give up my worries itโ€™s like standing outside that fence, letting someone else be in charge. And that is very difficult for me.

We have an agreement, a covenant that God enters into with those who pray to Him and are helped by Him.

Charles Spurgeon

In other words, we must acknowledge that God is trustworthy and has delivered us before and He will do it again.ย ย Our part is then to glorify Him through prayer and praise.ย ย Glorify โ€“ that sounds more than just a passing โ€œthanks, God.โ€ย ย Iโ€™ve been guilty of that โ€“ if I even remembered to thank Him.ย ย Which brings me to being earnest.

If we believe that Jesus is the Way and God is the powerful King of Kings, we must honor this exalted position.ย ย Would you walk into the Queen of Englandโ€™s throne room casually and just say, โ€œhey, whatโ€™s up Queenie?ย ย If it were at all possible would you be able to help me find a new job? I get it if you canโ€™t but maybe you can try.โ€ย ย Casual, and not very expecting.ย ย God is God.ย ย The One most High.ย ย ย We should come in reverence and expectation.ย ย He CAN do all.ย ย He has done it all.ย ย We need to plead with him, put our heart into it, and rap our knuckles as hard as possible against heavenโ€™s door.ย ย

How many of us actually have such low expectations of our prayers?ย ย We say them with rote numbness.ย ย My family used to say the exact same prayer at dinner time.ย ย It comes to mean absolutely nothing and is usually expressed with that same nothingness.ย ย My husband and I started praying in earnest this year over our evening meal.ย ย We express thankfulness and joy for good things that happened.ย ย We ask earnestly for healing of friends and family members.ย ย And we ask Him to use us and place opportunities to be His light in this world in front of us.ย ย It not only has helped us be in communion with God but it has also strengthened our marriage.

An earnest pleader comes out of his prayer closet rejoicing like a strong man ready to run his race.

Charles Spurgeon

I love that visual.ย ย After praying all my prayer cards in my โ€œwar roomโ€ I frequently feel emboldened to take on the world as one of Godโ€™s blessed daughters.ย ย How many of us who have children (or co-workers) and weโ€™ve needed them to complete a task?ย ย We mention it half-heartedly. They pretend not to hear us or just roll their eyes.ย ย As a parent and coach, I eventually perfected โ€œThe Look.โ€ย ย Thatโ€™s the look that says โ€œmom is serious about this so itโ€™d better get done.โ€ย ย Thatโ€™s the look we need to have in our prayer life.ย ย Expectation that God will answer our prayers.ย ย It may sound sacrilegious to โ€œexpect Godโ€ to do something in our life but He himself has said to us over and over to trust Him, to ask Him, to plead with Him.

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

and forgive us our debts, as

we have also forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation but

deliver us from the evil one.”

Matthew 6:9-13

Do you see the glorification and exaltation of God in the first sentence?ย ย Then, the trust and reminder that Godโ€™s will is meant to rule the earth.ย ย We then ask him to provide for us.ย ย Really, using the word โ€œgiveโ€ is like demanding.ย ย Pleading with Him to forgive us.ย ย And giving us hope for the future.ย ย Man, was Jesus so great with words!ย ย How many times have we recited this and not thought about what we are saying?ย ย Next time we speak these words make it in earnest, bring some emotion to it!ย ย Beg Him to forgive you and help you.

We are ordinary people asking extraordinary things from an amazing, loving, faithful, and powerful God.ย Throughout the Bible, people just like us asked for victory over large armies, the rain to fall and the rain to stop, for loved ones to be healed and even raised from the dead, for our never-ending ailments to be taken away, for our life of sin to be cleansed.ย ย And God abided.ย ย ย He healed us.ย ย He saved us.ย ย He made it rain.ย ย He has showered us for centuries with answered prayers.ย

If Jesus could lift a man from the dead, imagine what He can do with our prayers?

We must pray in earnest.ย ย It is a supernatural, powerful tool that Jesus gave us.ย ย Some of us use prayer like we are brushing our teeth โ€“ rote and without remembering all the benefits.ย ย Something we have to do.ย ย Itโ€™s time to take it up daily like a torch against the darkness, a sword against evil, and a golden gift presented to our Lord Most Exalted.

Yes, No, Kinda

As I sit here typing I am enjoying the sounds of my neighborโ€™s roof being ripped apart by workers.  Yes, enjoying.  You see my new neighbors moved in about two months ago.  And then they moved out.  I havenโ€™t seen them much over the two months because they had their flooring all re-done.  And then re-done.  The person they originally hired to install their beautiful reclaimed wood floors did a horrible job โ€“ when he showed up.  So, they had to fire him and hire a new installer.  And now the roof.  Theyโ€™ve been told for weeks the new roof would be installed any day.  Last week they were told it would be on Thursday.  Then Friday.  Then Monday.  So today the roofers finally arrived.  I like my new neighbors and I know how frustrating this has been for them.  So yes, Iโ€™m enjoying the noise knowing the work has finally started.   It seems that there are so few people and companies we can actually rely on today who make their โ€œyesโ€ mean โ€œyes.โ€  It may sound harsh, but when we donโ€™t make our โ€œyesโ€ mean โ€œyesโ€ and our โ€œnoโ€ mean โ€œnoโ€ thatโ€™s called lying.

Above all, do not swear โ€“ not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple โ€œyesโ€ or no.โ€ย

James 5:12

I watched an interesting video interaction once where a pastor went up to people and asked if they sinned and had broken the 10 commandments.ย ย They all said, โ€œno.โ€ย ย Then he started asking them questions.ย ย โ€œHave you ever taken a pen from your work?โ€ Thatโ€™s stealing.ย ย โ€œHave you ever โ€˜swore to Godโ€™ you would do something for someone and you didnโ€™t?โ€ย ย Thatโ€™s taking Godโ€™s name in vain.ย ย And on and on.ย ย It was fascinating to watch the faces of the people change.ย ย They looked humbled.

The Bible is big on trustworthiness.ย ย Godโ€™s covenant with us is His way of setting this concept in the forefront.ย ย He is trustworthy.ย ย He is the God of yesterday, today and tomorrow.ย ย He is the Rock we can trust will be with us in times of trouble.ย ย And He asks us to work on being trustworthy with our promises. When we are asked by a friend not to reveal something told in confidence, we arenโ€™t to go into that decision lightly.ย ย With Godโ€™s wisdom by our side we give our โ€œyesโ€ or our โ€œno.โ€ย ย And we stick by it.ย ย We donโ€™t need to swear it.ย ย We just need to mean it.

โ€œA gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.โ€

Proverb 11:13

I was a PTA president at my daughtersโ€™ elementary school for two years.ย ย I frequently asked people to help on projects or events.ย ย I appreciated those who would say โ€œnoโ€ and not be squirmy about it.ย ย I, of course, really appreciated the people who gave me an eager โ€œyesโ€ and meant it.ย ย The people I had the most issue with were those that said โ€œyesโ€ and then wouldnโ€™t show up, wouldnโ€™t do the work, or gave a half-hearted effort.ย ย They would swear they wanted to help. Itโ€™s those people that I felt had they said no, I wouldโ€™ve been better off.ย ย

If he is a true man and has plainly said, โ€œI will,โ€ you have him in your hand.ย ย He was free before giving it but not free after.

Charles Spurgeon

What if we all thought that way when we gave our decisions?ย ย Before we answer, we are fully free to pick whichever we wish.ย ย But once we say โ€œI willโ€ we are fully committed.ย ย Yes, circumstances arise that may be difficult to follow through โ€“ a late order from another company, the weather, an illness, something breaks down โ€“ but knowing we have made that commitment we will move heaven and earth to fulfill that obligation.ย ย We all have experienced situations where a person or company fails in their obligation.ย ย ย It is their reaction to that failure that we most respond to.ย ย Are they willing to make up for the failure?ย ย Are they contrite? Or do you get a โ€œwhateverโ€ response?ย ย We will determine then if they are trustworthy or not.

When we enter into that covenant with another person by giving our โ€œyesโ€ we need to be sure we arenโ€™t impetuous.ย ย Are we making that decision to impress others or even to impress God?ย ย I was involved with a woman through Girl Scouts and PTA for many years who volunteered for everything.ย ย People on the outside thought she was amazing!ย ย Her name was on all the volunteer lists.ย ย The only problem was she never actually followed through and completed the tasks.ย ย

โ€œIf you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you wonโ€™t be honest with greater responsibilities.ย

Luke 16:1-

Thatโ€™s Jesus talking.ย ย And heโ€™s not just talking about following through with commitments we make and being honest.ย ย Heโ€™s also talking about saying โ€œnoโ€ to things we need to say โ€œnoโ€ to.ย ย When we are tempted to do wrong, we need to just say a firm โ€œno.โ€ย ย When we are asked to take on a task and have prayed about it and God tells us โ€œno,โ€ we need to say the same to the asker.ย ย Not โ€œmaybe.โ€ย ย Not, โ€œpossibly.โ€ย ย Not, โ€œIโ€™ll see.โ€ย ย We donโ€™t need some long explanation.ย ย With His wisdom tucked firmly in our back pocket to be used at a momentโ€™s notice, we can be firm on our โ€œno.โ€ย ย Sometimes itโ€™s difficult to decide which way to turn.ย ย If only we had the breastplate described in Exodus 28:15

Fashion a breastpiece for making decisionsโ€”the work of skilled hands. Make it like the ephod: of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen.

Exodus 28:15

Included on the tunic was a pocket with a black and a white stone.ย ย When a big decision needed to be made, the faith leader would reach in and pull out the stone.ย ย Black for no and white for yes.ย ย It reminds me of those Magic 8 Balls.ย ย Although those always seemed stuck on โ€œMaybe.โ€

In my post on patience I listed the reasons you should have patience.ย ย One of those was for better decision-making.ย ย When we arenโ€™t emotional and stressed, we can think through a decision much clearer.ย ย As a Christian we have the power of prayer.ย ย We have the Word of God.ย ย How many of us, when faced with a big decision turn to both of these?ย ย And wait for an answer?ย ย I used to volunteer for anything thrown my way.ย ย Part of it was out of pride โ€“ thinking how great it was to be asked.ย ย Another part was needing to always be โ€œdoing something.โ€ย ย After I volunteered THEN I would ask God to work it out.ย ย Yes, a bit backwards.ย ย

I learned a long time ago at my first professional, career job that, when making especially difficult or controversial decisions, I wanted to align those decisions with my boss.ย ย That way I knew if issues came up, I was supported.ย ย That thinking has served me well throughout my working career.ย ย And when I finally applied that same concept to the rest of my life it made giving my โ€œyesโ€ and my โ€œnoโ€ much easier.ย ย God is my boss.ย ย When I align my decisions with His Word, I am strengthened by the promises He has made.ย ย I know He is working all things for my good.

But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.

Do You Do or Don’t Do?

A year ago I decided to take my weight gain seriously.ย ย My middle-aged hormones were wreaking havoc on my body.ย ย I had gained 35 pounds.ย ย And I was two months away from my daughterโ€™s wedding.ย ย God wants us to take care of ourselves.ย ย 1 Corinthians 6 says, โ€œDo you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?โ€ย ย And so, along with the help of a weight loss app I finally decided to really do something about it.ย ย I was diligent.ย ย By the time my daughterโ€™s wedding came around the dress that I had tailored a few weeks prior didnโ€™t really fit me โ€“ it hung loosely in a number of places.ย ย About six months in I was 10 pounds away from my goal weight and decided I didnโ€™t need the app anymore.ย ย Around that same time the Covid19 crisis struck.ย ย And here I am another seven months later with 15 pounds to lose.ย ย You got that โ€“ I, of course, gained more weight.ย ย So, at lunch today I sat across from my friend who also tries to watch her weight.ย ย I told her about a great dish the restaurant has that is low calorie.ย ย I knew exactly what to order and what not to order.ย ย And as the waitress took our order, I did exactly what I shouldnโ€™t.ย ย I gave into my cravings.ย ย Not only that, I convinced my friend to do the same.

When we do what we shouldn’t do!

One of my favorite verses from the Bible is quite the tongue twister.  When I heard a young pastor speak on these verses he could barely get it out without laughing.

โ€œI do not understand what I do.ย ย For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.ย ย And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree the law is good.ย ย As it is, it is no longer myself who do it, but it is the sin living in me.โ€

Romans 7: 15-17

And the doโ€™s keep going for four more verses!ย ย James makes it a lot clearer:

โ€œIf anyone, then knows the good they ought to do and doesnโ€™t do it, it is sin for them.โ€

James 4:17

Weโ€™ve probably all been there with the diet issue.ย ย But how many times do we not do what we know we should do?ย ย For some of us that might be every, single day.ย ย Sinning is our very nature.ย ย We Christians have allowed other people to use the word โ€œsinโ€ against us.ย ย They say it makes us judgmental.ย ย It makes us hypocrites.ย ย It shows we donโ€™t love people.ย ย But sin is everyoneโ€™s nature โ€“ whether you are a Christian or not.ย ย You can thank Adam and Eve for that.ย ย Unlike atheists, Christians just recognize that we are sinning.ย ย But the enemy wants us to be prideful and say we donโ€™t sin โ€“ itโ€™s those โ€œother people.โ€ย ย Throughout our day we need to recognize our sinful behavior and ask God for forgiveness.ย ย When I blame someone else for โ€œmaking me upsetโ€ or I accuse others of โ€œdoing worse than meโ€ thatโ€™s pride shining through.ย ย It also gives us cover to do the exact same thing over and over.ย ย Sinning make take the form of fear over faith, worry, improper thoughts, shame or gossip.

My daily sin is being impatient and annoyed with people.ย ย I know not to do it.ย ย But I do it.ย ย Sometimes Iโ€™m so caught up in my excuses I forget to take a moment and ask for that forgiveness โ€“ to ask for that strength not to do it again.ย ย But I had a recent revelation.ย ย I was living in transgression.ย ย That, my friends, is a sin that is done over and over for a hidden reason.ย ย After one of my prayers of forgiveness Jesus shined a light on it.ย ย My lack of humility.ย ย It was the root of my everyday sinning.ย ย I was making excuses and hiding it.ย ย And until I realized, it there was no chance of me stopping my bad behavior.

โ€œLet any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.โ€

John 8: 7

You see all the accusers of this woman about to be stoned were hiding their sins, trying to sell everyone on their pious lives.ย ย But you really canโ€™t hide from Jesus.ย ย Satan loves when we try to hide our sins.ย ย Iโ€™ve been telling my Bible Study Girls lately that living like that creates a visual of a dark, scribbly mass living inside of us โ€“ creating chaos and hatred and all things ugly.ย ย We have a hard time doing the right things for the right reason when we live with transgressions.ย ย

A soul filled with transgressions

And then we have iniquities โ€“ where those transgressions become a bondage to our transgressions.ย ย It drives us to repeatedly and continually commit sin.ย ย It perverts all our good intentions.ย ย For example, my sin of being annoyed with cashiers.ย ย When I do it time and again it becomes about a lack of grace, love and humility on my part (transgression).ย ย If I donโ€™t repent and ask God to help this sin can move into an iniquity โ€“ where I actually hate cashiers.ย ย I might even call them names, or think of them as lowly people for doing such โ€œmenialโ€ jobs.ย ย It becomes a soul crusher.ย ย And satan dances.

Because, as Christians, we make it a point to live with the mind of Christ and the knowledge of Godโ€™s Word, we know what โ€œdoing goodโ€ means.  We can choose to give to the poor.  Or we can choose to ignore Godโ€™s call to help the needy.  And in doing so we sin.  And if we consistently withhold Godโ€™s treasure from His people our sin transforms into transgression โ€“ maybe a fear of losing money, a fear of not having enough money.  And those constant hidden thoughts about money may lead to an iniquity โ€“ greed, hatefulness to the needy, miserly behavior.  And none of those creates a loving mind and heart.

Why do we not do what we know we ought to do?ย ย Because we have a sinful nature.ย ย We want what we want, and we want it now.ย ย The closer we try to live next to Jesus and the more we fill our minds and hearts with God, the harder it is to allow room for those sins to become soul killers.ย ย

God knows His children.ย ย He knows we need constant correction.ย ย Letโ€™s just try to keep our lives on the slightly wandering path rather than taking the full off-ramp.ย ย Ask God right now to reveal any hidden sins in you — anything that you need to recognize that negatively motivates your behavior.ย ย He loves you and will gladly honor your request in a way that He knows you need.ย ย Donโ€™t be afraid.ย ย Just ask.ย ย ย And then do what He tells you.
