Treasures of God

Hello Friends! I’m currently working on my next series based on the book of Ecclesiastes.โ€‚The idea was born of my word of the year, Enjoy.โ€ƒEnjoying every moment by seeking the Lord in every circumstance, whether good times or times of trial.โ€‚

In the meantime, I’ve joined a church Bible study group which will focus on the names of God.โ€‚And as usual, the Lord is intertwining all my various times of study and prayer.โ€‚The first name we looked at was Elohim, God the Creator of all things seen and unseen.โ€ƒIn my longtime Bible study group we are digging deep into how our sins block spiritual revival.โ€‚And lastly, in my devotional I’m learning how to grow in wisdom.โ€‚Putting all these together I was struck with the concept that I need to remember who I belong to, who I was created by, and what my purpose is here on this earth.โ€‚When I confess that I’m not in charge, God is, and when I remember that I was created in the image of God to do His will and give Him all glory, honor and power, it opens me up to spiritual revival.

Friend, you are a beloved son or daughter of God.โ€‚You were createdโ€‚by Him through your earthly family.โ€‚And even if that family has failed you we need to remember we are loved so immensely.โ€ƒNone of us were created to go about our lives willy nilly placing our hopes and dreams in the idols of this world.โ€‚When we realize that our sole purpose is to honor God the Creator, God the Sovereign Lord, we re-align our minds and hearts with the Holy Spirit.

I want to encourage you to sit in prayer during the next few days and ask God to reveal any roadblocks you have put up for receiving and surrendering to Him fully.โ€‚Ask Him to help you remember who you belong to.โ€‚Ask Him for a revival in your heart.โ€‚Ask Him to make His will be done in your life.โ€‚

One of the women in my church study group is a poet.โ€‚She shared her amazing poem yesterday about being His beloved children.โ€ƒShe gave me permission to share it with all of you.โ€‚Enjoy.

Treasures of Godโ€™s Heart

By Jill Becker

I know Iโ€™m Your child, Lord, but what does that mean?
What treasures await me that I have not seen?
Many Youโ€™ve shown me, so many I know,
Others I let slip from my thoughts long ago.
You tell me of great things that You want to do,
Yet at times I take paths that Iโ€™ve chosen, not You.

Lord, since I am but clay, and Youโ€™re the wise Potter,
How could it be that You made me Your daughter?
You could have formed me into what I deserve:
A warped and cracked pot not even worthy to serve.
But You set me before You, Your grace made me able,
To be part of Your family and feast at Your table.

You sent for me Jesus, my Savior and Brother,
Who demonstrated love for mankind like no other.
He gave us His life, all that was heavens to give,
Then He sent forth His Spirit, so within me He lives.
Great riches He left me, those fit for a Royal,
No longer a pauper left to struggle and toil.

Amazing to me is what Youโ€™ve given beyond measure,
And more awesome than all is that I bring You pleasure.
You tell me Iโ€™m precious, the love of Your life,
A jewel set in this dark world to sparkle with your Light.
Lord, I know all thatโ€™s needed is mine for the taking,
To care for this beloved child of your making.

So, Iโ€™ll open the treasure chest to see whatโ€™s inside,
It is filled with Godโ€™s Word so Iโ€™ll grow and abide.
There are gems of Your mercy, Your faithfulness and more,
My heart and my mind canโ€™t contain whatโ€™s in store.
For when I asked what it means to be a Daughter of the King,
My Father answered in one word, โ€œO child, EVERYTHING!โ€

My Every Need

"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:19

โ€œDear Lord, before I even put my feet on the floor this morning I want to thank you for meeting all my needs today. I know not all my โ€œwantsโ€ may be met but each time I am able to eat a meal, rest easy in my home, drive safely on my errands, pay my bills, find peace in my mind and joy in my heart I thank you and lift you up in glory for the love you have for me.  Amenโ€

My BSGs recently studied the intricacies of the trinity. Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  It was great getting to know and understand to the best of our human abilities how each of the three interact with each other and with creation.  The foundation of the study was that God is love.  He didnโ€™t need to make us humans because He was already complete within the trinity.  They love each other and are fulfilled by each other.  And glorify each other.  So creating โ€œusโ€ became a pure act of love.

โ€œIt would be wrong to think of ourselves as Godโ€™s primary focal point and purpose; that is not the message of Scripture.โ€  says Christian teacher, Tara-Leigh Cobble.  โ€œHe created us and invited us into pre-existing joy.โ€

Pre-existing joy?  Think about it.  Throughout the gospels Jesus talks about how God loved Him before and how they glorify each other.  They had love and joy and everything they needed before โ€œus.โ€

โ€œFather, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world." John 17:24

So given this truth, how much more amazing is it that God cares about us?  About your bills.  About my aches and pains.  About our fears and worries.  There are those who believe that God created the world and then left us alone (deists).  But every single day He answers prayers.  For me, that good night sleep was an answered prayer.  The fact that my husband still has a job and can provide for us is an answered prayer.  That my oldest daughter has yet another day to decide to turn to Him and that my younger daughter already has are answered prayers.  That I have food to eat and a strong body to serve others.  For just having another day to glorify Him before my time is up.

He loves me.  He loves you.  He is providing for us.  So each morning let us lift up our eyes and present ourselves to Him as His servants.  Ready to glorify Him, ready to acknowledge His holy presence in our lives.

I Will

So her husband, Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly. Matthew 1:19

We left off our study of new beginnings with a cliff hanger of sorts.  There sat Jonah on a hill wishing he were dead.  And God reminding Jonah that He cares for all people of the earth, especially the ones โ€œwho cannot tell their right hand from their left.โ€  Thank goodness for that because there are many days I feel and act like one of those foolish people!  If left to being helped out of my fiery pit by unloving, sleepy Christians, I would surely find myself in the depths of hell.  But for God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.  And those that submit themselves not only to their will but do so out of love.

So, we leave the Old Testament with many more stories of new beginnings than I have shared.  And with hope that Jonah finally grasped Godโ€™s message of works without love is empty and useless.  But hereโ€™s the thing about our guidebook for life, the Bible, Godโ€™s holy Word, thereโ€™s 1000s of connections back and forth between the ancient stories in the Old Testament and the newer history of the New Testament.  Which leads us to the first new beginning we encounter in the book of Matthew.  Another Noah.  Another servant of God who is the way maker for the worldโ€™s new beginning.  The connector from the old ways to the new.  A man who, like Noah, was considered โ€œrighteousโ€ and faithful to God.  But first, let me share with you a modern story of another righteous man who helped shepherd in a new beginning for one small child.

Epworthโ€™s Childrenโ€™s Home received this first-hand account from a foster parent in 2017 about his experience in becoming a foster father:

โ€œOur family has been fostering a boy since October 2017. Yesterday our foster child had a court hearing to determine what step to take as far as his custody goes. I havenโ€™t shared a lot about the whole foster experience because I have been afraid, to be completely honest. Afraid because fostering has been a lot harder for me than I thought it would be. Not because the child is difficult โ€“ it has been hard because of my heart. Ever since he came into our home, I have been terrified of becoming too attached and having my heart broken when he would eventually leave our home. I have been terrified of giving him all of my love, my energy, my grace and my compassion. I was sitting in the courtroom listening to the different parties discussing and debating the best course of action for the childโ€™s future, when I started shaking. I began to realize this is the moment! The moment I decide to completely expose my heart to the potential of pain, or keep my walls up. It was absolutely terrifying! I started hearing a small voice inside that I could no longer ignore, and it was telling me to fight for this child. I realized I was willing to do anything for him.

โ€œMy walls started to crumble around me. Then I heard the judge call my name. He wanted to know if I wanted to adopt this child. I wanted to scream โ€œYes! He is my son!โ€, but I think I said something a little less dramatic like, โ€œYes sir, we are working on becoming licensed for adoption for this child.โ€ I then heard the judge say that he is ordering termination of parental rights and opening this case for adoption. The weight of this decision is not lost on me, but it was one of the most powerful experiences that I have ever had.โ€

But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, โ€œJoseph, son of David, donโ€™t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:20

Joseph was our Lordโ€™s foster father.  As a devout follower of the Mosaic Law, he had every right to not only publicly shame Mary for her โ€œadulteryโ€ but also to have her stoned to death!  Before the angel even spoke to him, however, love, kindness, compassion took over and he decided to quietly divorce her.  Think of how Jonah wouldโ€™ve responded.  Surely God wouldโ€™ve had to intervene to save Maryโ€™s life from Jonahโ€™s anger.

After Joseph obeyed Godโ€™s urging to complete his marriage vows to Mary, his troubles surely were not over. Like Noah, he wouldโ€™ve faced public humiliation.  The knowledge of Maryโ€™s pregnancy in the small village of Nazareth would have spread like a wildfire.  And yet he stayed the course.  He stayed faithful not only to Mary but to God.  He didnโ€™t, by all accounts do it begrudgingly like Jonah.  He took up the mantle of โ€œfoster fatherโ€ and protected his family, raised his son as his own.  His new beginning was as father to someone elseโ€™s son.  An earthly role model.  A shepherd, like Noah, for what was to be all of humanityโ€™s new beginning.

Joseph and the unnamed servant girl who helped Naaman (2 Kings 5:3) also have a lot in common.  They were faithful.  They had a heart for God.  They stepped up to help when they couldโ€™ve taken a different path.  Their small steps were a gift to many.  And they both are but a few lines in our history.  Josephโ€™s last mention of him doesnโ€™t even use his name.  Jesus is 12 years old, immersed in the teachings at the temple and his parents are frantically looking for him.  His mother chastises him and says, โ€œYour father and I have been anxiously searching for you!โ€ (Luke 2:48)  After that, Joseph fades away.  Most likely, he passes before Jesus begins his adult ministry.

And yet we remember him each Christmas for his shepherding, protecting, and faith.  We should all add a bit of thanks to Joseph each day we pray in Jesusโ€™ name.  Because like so many faithful servants of Christ, He obeyed out of love.  He didnโ€™t ask or require that โ€œthanks.โ€  He didnโ€™t harbor ill will for having to endure hardship.  He put his head down, his hands out and his heart lifted and said to God, โ€œI will.โ€

I want to share with you the rest of the letter written to Epworth Childrenโ€™s Home by the foster father:

โ€œI will end with this. This is especially for you guys and fathers. If you feel God tugging at your heart to become a foster parent, listen! There will always be a reason to not become a foster parent, but if your main reason is that you are scared your heart will be broken, then you especially need to do it. Foster children need someone who will be heartbroken over them. They need someone who is going to stick by them when things get hard. They havenโ€™t experienced that. They need someone to love them and be gentle with them when they come over and hit you in the face with a maraca and break your glasses (not that I have ever had that happen, that is completely hypothetical, of course!). They need someone who is going to be faithful to them and strong for them in their weakest moments. I am by no means perfect in any of those, but I am strong in my faith, and it provides me the love, strength and grace that I need. Fostering has made me more dependent on God, in everything, and that is good. Ultimately, I am a foster child who was adopted into His family, and I am fully loved.โ€

Amen.

He Serves Humbly

โ€œI am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,โ€ He replied.  โ€œNow get up and go into the city and you will be told what to do.โ€  Acts 9:5-6

I did not grow up in a strong, male-led home.  My father was a sweet man who worked a lot.  When he got home from work we ate dinner, he showered, and then fixed himself dessert and watched TV.  On the weekends we didnโ€™t do family activities and outings.  He was just, well, there.  Not bad and not great.  He is an atheist who believes he can work through any problem in life in his own head.

So, when I met my father-in-law, I expected the same.  But I couldnโ€™t have been more wrong.  One of my first encounters with John Shetter lives on in infamy.  And yet shows his commitment to humbly serving others.  You see, I was out visiting my then boyfriend and his parents and we took a short drive from their hometown into nearby Boulder, Colorado.  After a nice morning we had lunch, walked around a bit then headed back for the 20 minute drive home.  Suddenly, my lunch decided it wasnโ€™t agreeing with me.  I whispered to my boyfriend that trouble was brewing.  He then turned to John, who was driving, and said I needed a bathroom โ€“ pronto.

The car seemed to have entered hyper speed and we may have turned into the driveway on two wheels.  The first out of the car was John.  He ran to the front door with keys ready and flew the door open for me.  Iโ€™m not sure if I have ever been more grateful in my life!

A funny tale for sure but Johnโ€™s desire to make sure my needs were met as quickly as possible is his calling card throughout his life.

Dad is dedicated to Jesusโ€™ teachings – he approaches all people with consideration, thoughtfulness and patience.  He has given himself in service to so many entities:  church, senior center, hospital, YMCA, underprivileged children.  To serve others, therefore serving God is in his DNA.

Dan Shetter, youngest son

I didnโ€™t grow up around any devoted Christian men in my life.  In fact, most of the men Iโ€™d been around, either through work or school, were not the โ€œhumble servantโ€ types.  To see a strong, head of household with a job in the corporate world balance those roles with the character of Jesus is truly a great lesson for us all.

And he wasnโ€™t alone.  I found, as I married Johnโ€™s son and met so many of their family friends, that he was surrounded by men of humble servanthood.  Men who attended church regularly, went to Bible study, volunteered throughout the community, loved on their families, and talked comfortably about praying for others.  They are bankers and realtors, teachers and business owners.

Johnโ€™s service to the community is something he prefers to โ€œkeep behind the scenes.โ€  His commitment to our church is exceptional as he has served in leadership, providing childrenโ€™s messages, and many other tasks too numerous to mention!

Longtime friend, Chuck Allen

My younger daughter recently told me that one of her companyโ€™s core values was that everyone be willing to make the office coffee.  I love that.  It makes it clear that no task is too small for anyone throughout the organization.  During a particularly busy season they asked the corporate staff to give one hour a week to the production floor because they were behind on orders.  No job is too big or too small for even the CEO.

Thatโ€™s how John sees his life.  A few years ago, he helped set up a warming shelter at his church.  On particularly cold nights they open their doors for the homeless to spend the night.  But he didnโ€™t just help set it up.  I have been at their home when he headed off to his shift in the dead of night.  No bells or whistles.  In fact, I wasnโ€™t sure where he was going at first.  Just off to serve the Lordโ€™s flock.

โ€œYou see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.โ€  James 2:22

He has even turned his favorite pastime into an act of service.  He loves historical stories, especially related to the old West.  He trained to become an official storyteller, a โ€œSpellbinder,โ€ just so he could go into schools and share his tales.  This imposing 6โ€™ man sits in a tiny school chair and regularly spins yarns about Indian folklore and pioneer heroes.  All because he loves to see smiling little faces.

John doesnโ€™t wait for someone else to fix a problem.  He turns to the Lord for direction and takes a step forward.  He may not always get it right but he knows he is always working from the right heart.

Thereโ€™s a lot of โ€œJohnsโ€ out there in the world.  Men carrying the weight of their family.  Men on their knees praying for Godโ€™s guidance.  Men serving their communities and answering the call to, โ€œfeed my sheep.โ€  So many serve quietly and humbly and we might overlook them.  The noise today is that men are evil, men are self-serving, men need to be less like, well, โ€œmen.โ€  But it is on men, like Saul in our first verse, to whom Jesus placed the weight of the world to spread the Good News.

A humble servant.  A man of strength.  Those arenโ€™t mutually exclusive.  They are an opportunity to achieve Godโ€™s holy balance.

His Amazing Identity

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

Every year Jesusโ€™ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.ย When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.ย ย After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.ย When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.ย After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.ย Everyone who heard him was amazedย at his understanding and his answers.ย When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His motherย said to him, โ€œSon, why have you treated us like this? Your fatherย and I have been anxiously searching for you.โ€

โ€œWhy were you searching for me?โ€ย he asked.ย โ€œDidnโ€™t you know I had to be in my Fatherโ€™s house?โ€ But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

Luke 2:41-50

Who have you believed Jesus to be?ย

The world has so many depictions of what Jesus โ€œlooks like.โ€ White Jesus, Black Jesus, Buddha Jesus, Italian Jesus — it seems as though everyone has taken their idea of Jesus and made it reflect their own image. This practice is a dishonoring habit by churches everywhere who spend so much time painting Jesus to reflect their faces, instead of painting themselves to look more like Jesus.

No matter where you are at in your walk with Christ, I think itโ€™s safe to say weโ€™ve all had different perspectives of who Jesus is. For me, Iโ€™ve always thought of him as a Mediterranean- looking trim man with brown flowy locks. I can thank several movies and documentaries for that image. Iโ€™ve also thought of him as Godโ€™s Son who sits on a seat lower than God, answers to His requests and working as the hands and feet of Godโ€™s Kingdom — another misconception that again, devalues the full power and glory of Christ. Why? Because Jesus isnโ€™t less than God or inferior. Jesus is God as a part of the Trinity. Three-in-One, Father, Spirit, Son. Jesus sits at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19) and was present at creation (Genesis 1:26).ย

See, here in Luke 2, Jesusโ€™ parents knew he was a seed planted in Mary by God, but they still couldnโ€™t wrap their heads around what that really meant. When they lost Jesus in the crowds in Jerusalem, they searched tirelessly for Him everywhere but one place โ€“ the temple. If they truly understood who Jesus was, that wouldโ€™ve been the first place they looked. But to them, all they could see was their young son who was just a little boy. Where could he possibly have gone? Once found, they wereย amazedย at what they were seeing. That same little boy was teaching/preaching in the temple courts,ย communing with His Father.ย

Duh, where else would He be?ย

I challenge you to ask yourself this: What lies/misconceptions/myths are you believing about Jesus? And how are those misconceptions hindering you from being truly amazed by his power and presence in your life? Where are you looking for Jesus and missing Him, when in reality, you simply need to go to the Father to find Him?ย

The best way to find out who Jesus REALLY is, is to read through His words and interactions with others in the gospels. Study His character and you will discover Godโ€™s character. Study His love and you will understand Godโ€™s love. Study His kindness, grace and compassion and you will see what an amazingly kind and compassionate God we serve.ย

Knowing Jesus means knowing the Father โ€“ I encourage you to get to know Him today.ย
