Enjoy Being Set Apart Part Two

Missed part one? Go to emboldened.net/2024/03/25/enjoying-being-set-apart/

I recently was listening to a teaching on the Good Samaritan.  It’s such a popular and well-known parable that it’s become an axiom. In some cases, even the title of laws. In many states in the United States, “good samaritans” are protected from lawsuits if they’ve provided physical aid but an additional injury may have occurred as a result of that help (ie a person giving CPR fractures a person’s rib). For many believers and non-believers this story represents “being nice” or acting kindly to others. Jesus, however, throughout His time on earth spoke basically about only two things: God and His Kingdom.  So, it’s important, however familiar we may be with the parable, to know why the story was told.  It starts with this interaction:

Now letโ€™s look at what was happening.ย ย This lawyer was testing Jesus.ย ย Maybe he wanted Jesus to say, โ€œFollow me.โ€ย ย This would have been heretical for the Jew.ย ย Instead, Jesus points him back to Godโ€™s Word.ย ย Notice the man fully counts himself a wonderful, loving person in his own eyes.ย ย He believes he uniquely and fully loves God with all his heart, mind and soul.ย ย Thereโ€™s apparently no chance he has failed at this overwhelming task. Instead, he wants to parse out the requirements by then asking Jesus, โ€œWho is my neighbor?โ€ย ย

The Old Testament religious Jewish leaders had come to define (erroneously) their โ€œneighborsโ€ as those in their own circle.  People exactly like them.  That allowed them to hate anyone else — other Jews who they deemed unworthy such as tax collectors and then gentiles. They turned “love your neighbor as yourself” into “love your neighbor and hate your enemies.”

Some might say they were justified. I mean God did call on them to eliminate entire groups of people. But biblical scholars will clarify those particular groups actively hated God and sinned in abominable ways against Him. Murderous cultures, child sacrifices, rampant sexual immorality, pillaging and raping innocent people year after year after year. God also had warned them for hundreds of years. They all knew of the God of Abraham and Jacob — as witnessed by the likes of Rahab from Jericho. (Joshua 2:9-13) So, when Israel was directed to take action it was God’s justice, not personal justice. Each man was directed throughout Deuteronomy and Leviticus to treat the foreigner as themselves. Personal vendettas were against the Law. And still the religious leaders contorted God’s Word.

Jesus upends their well-worn, twisted morality by exposing the lack of compassion by the “righteous” versus the godly love by an โ€œoutsiderโ€ or even enemy.  This parable wasnโ€™t about acts of kindness, rather it highlights our sinful tendencies to divide and hate those on the other side of that divide.  That hatred and the distortion of God’s Word leads us in the opposite direction the Jewish lawyer wanted to go. It’s not heaven he will find with a dark heart. Jesus allows the lesson to sink in; the lesson of reminding believers that He sets us apart from the world to do something unthinkable and difficult.  To love others and show mercy as God loves us.

Friend, in Godโ€™s world, the world of eternal life, envy, hatred, greed, and jealousy, have no place.ย ย It didn’t during King Solomon’s time seen in Ecclesiastes 4 and it doesn’t now. True justice for the oppressed and downtrodden is not equity or retroactive punishment or even self-flagellation.ย ย Itโ€™s love.ย ย Itโ€™s the kind of love that looks different than the world.ย ย It says, โ€œLet me help you out of sin.โ€ย ย It gives all that it can and doesnโ€™t hoard the blessings weโ€™ve been given.ย  It looks hatred in the eye and says, “God loves you too.” ย It stops and, without care for itself, gives compassion.ย ย It protects the weak and helpless.ย ย It overflows with mercy and forgiveness. It’s a love that hates only one thing — the hatred of God — yet still prays for that person. It helps us see we are all needy sinners who disobey the Lord regularly and we thank God He abounds in mercy.

We are all, no matter our worldly status, guilty of not loving enough.  Not forgiving enough.  Not being people of grace.  Itโ€™s not just to the faceless who we think have wrong us but to those in our church, in our home, in our neighborhood.  It is our constant striving for the one and only thing that makes life meaningful that will bring us eternal life โ€“ our joyful obedience to the God who loves us.

When we seek personal justice or vengeance let’s remember the Apostle Paul. Remember the evil that lived in him and the terrible acts he oversaw. Then look to your Bible and see not only God’s mercy but the mercy and forgiveness he was granted by his fellow Christian Jews and gentiles. There is always hope in God’s plan for someone (like us) to turn their meaningless, oppressive life into something oh so meaningful.

When I was researching Ecclesiastes 4, I was led to reflect on my experience with Tom. You remember him? The one who hated women.  The Holy Spirit convicted me.  I have long, quietly harbored ill-will toward him.  For making my life difficult during a stressful time.  For hating an entire โ€œtypeโ€ of people.  Suddenly I realized I was just as guilty.  I was not loving my enemy, my oppressor.  That realization brought me to tears of joy.  Knowing our good God is constantly working in our hearts to prune us in ways we didnโ€™t realize needed work.  That act, alone, made that day so meaningful.

Ask Him today to reveal any hidden sins, especially of hatred, envy, oppression, vengeance, and jealousy.  Then thank Him for the revelation and mercy.  Enjoy the moment where you have been set free once again.

31 Days of God’s Wisdom

โ€œLove the Lord with all your minds heart and soul.โ€ Matthew 22:37

It seems when we Christians talk about our faith these days itโ€™s so frequently focused on feelings, emotions โ€“ โ€œfrom the heart.โ€ย ย And while Jesus will ultimately be the judge of our heartโ€™s true commitment, He also asks us to use the rest of our bodies to honor God.ย ย Itโ€™s not enough to feel God we need to know and obey God.ย ย Why? Because His Words are designed to guide us through this temporary life as best possible.ย ย We want to become skillful not just at making a living but in making a life that is in line with our Holy Father.ย ย Many of us have experienced life outside those guardrails โ€“ sometimes on a daily occurrence.ย ย When we are rash with our decisions or emotions, quick to be angry, quick to take up the latest idea or get rich scheme, quick to enter into relationships without good judgment, we easily find ourselves outside Godโ€™s protective ways.

The words โ€œwiseโ€ and โ€œwisdomโ€ are used 125 times in the 31 chapters of the book of Proverbs.ย ย It sounds as though someone might be trying to get a point across to us!ย ย Wisdom literature in the Bible includes Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes.ย ย But for this series Iโ€™ll be focusing only on Proverbs.ย ย Youโ€™ll notice thereโ€™s 31 chapters โ€“ perfect for a one month study of Godโ€™s messages to us about living life in His guardrails.ย ย

But first and foremost, we need a right relationship with our Creator. Meaning we accept God in His three persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) as one God who created the universe and everything in it.ย ย And that Jesus came as fully man and fully human to be the final, complete sacrifice to cleanse us of our sins.ย ย In this way we may come before God, our King, as righteous.ย ย He is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent in our lives.ย ย There is one way on this path and that one way is open to everyone who believes in Him.

Second, we have an assertion of a moral law operating in the world and there will be divine justice.ย ย None of which has to do with IQ, wealth or even education.ย ย There is an expectation by God to follow His moral laws.ย ย And everyone, believers and non-believers, will be judged upon their death.

If we do not have these two foundations, then the seeking of wisdom has no foundation itself.ย ย Without a moral King to guide us then we are guiding ourselves.ย ย And we know how well that usually turns out!ย ย Our selfish souls seek ease, seek comfort, seek pleasure above all.ย ย Without an understanding and acceptance of a final, universal judgment then what does it all matter?ย ย If you read back into ancient history, peoples without God sacrificed children to meet their desires.ย ย They performed all sorts of sexually immoral acts (especially on women) to please their desires.ย ย Murdered without out conscience.ย ย It was the formation of Godโ€™s people through Abraham and Moses that brought Godโ€™s moral law back down to earth.ย ย Setting us back on the path toward Godโ€™s future Eden on Earth.

And so, through people like King Solomon He spoke.ย ย The king had asked God for wisdom and it was granted (1 King 3:5-14).ย ย It is believed King Solomon spoke 3,000 proverbs during his reign.ย ย The beauty of the proverbs selected for this book is that none of them are in conflict.ย ย All cultures have their sayings โ€“ quick summaries of lessons.ย ย But many times, they conflict with each other!ย ย (โ€œLook before you leap!โ€ vs โ€œHe who hesitates is lost.โ€) Godโ€™s words are never opposed to each other.ย ย

Toward the end of his reign, King Solomon turned to the folly he so frequently spoke to avoid and disregarded his own wisdom โ€“ proving we need to stay close to God at all times. In fact, God warned him when He gave Solomon this gift: โ€œAnd if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will enlighten your days.โ€ A good reminder to never take a day off from following God.

Proverbs are not promises.ย ย They are generalized statements of what is usually true.ย ย So, if you find a proverb that you want to disagree with first remind yourself that we humans are sinful people.ย ย And second, God seeks to bring us into His ideal world.ย ย We are practicing to live in our final home โ€“ the New Eden.

His Sacrifice

โ€œAll this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.โ€ 2 Corinthians 4:15

Gracious God this morning I rose thinking of the Son you sent to save us.  I remembered the pain He endured to show His everlasting and deep love for us.  You created this plan and He completed it.  In remembrance of that day I sit in awe and wonder at your glorious ways.  Amen

Over the course of 30 years a survey was undertaken asking high school and college students if they would first try to save their dog or a stranger.  Iโ€™m disturbed to report that 2/3 have always voted against saving the person.  In newer studies, adults now vote similarly.  How would you vote if asked the same question?

This study was posted online awhile back and I went to the comments section to see what people had to say.  I shouldnโ€™t have.  It was more disturbing.  People condemning others for being โ€œevil,โ€ โ€œcruel,โ€ and โ€œvile.โ€  Strangely enough, they didnโ€™t put themselves in those categories!  The folks that would pick an animal over a human (now certainly there would be instances we all might do the same.  Say a person has just attacked you and your dog) fail to see their decision makes them complicit in devaluing human life.

What the surveyors have surmised is the lack of Judeo-Christian values in a personโ€™s life or the watering down of those teachings increases making moral decisions based on our feelings.  In addition, a belief in God elevates human worth over that of animals.  Without that, we see the image of God brought down to having no more value than a squid.

โ€œ9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.โ€ Colossians 3:9-10

Throughout the Bible we are reminded that humans were Godโ€™s special creation.  So special that He gave us dominion over the earth.  The earth serves us, not the other way around as some would say.  When this understanding of the worldโ€™s creation is thrown out the window itโ€™s no wonder the people of this world have turned everything upside down!

A number of my Christians friends have struggled with the fact that God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son.  We either secretly or out loud say we hope God never asks us to do something so difficult.  Yet every day parents see their children in the military risk their lives for us.  Police officers, firefighters, lifeguards and others put their lives on the line for strangers.  Because they believe we are worth saving.

The Bible is one of the most tested and proved documents in all history.  And Godโ€™s work is all around us to see proof of His ways.  There is little to no dispute that Jesus walked this earth.  Or even that He died a horrible death on the cross.  And whether or not a person believes He rose and ascended into heaven everyone should understand that He went to the cross that day for us.  He spoke over and over about the plan ahead for Him.  He didnโ€™t die because He wanted fame.  He didnโ€™t die to save the whales.  He didnโ€™t die because of some terrible crime He committed.  The Father sent His Son to die to save us.  Because, thank God, He believes we are valuable. And just as our first verse reminds us, we arenโ€™t saved just to be saved, but to spread the Word so that yes, even strangers are saved.

Friend, God in His glorious ways made us special.  I love my dog, Tucker, but he wonโ€™t seek justice for me and he wonโ€™t take up arms to protect me.  God made us in such a way that we can even ponder these moral thoughts.  He made us so when faced with difficult decisions we can decide on A, B or even A and B.  It depends on if you love Godโ€™s creation as much as He does.

Contend for the Faith

Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.  Hebrews 10:33-35

Our country has become a virtual cafeteria of different religions, cults, and non-Christian world views that are all vying for supremacy on Americaโ€™s religious landscape.  Our country is also currently confronted by many tough domestic and global issues.  We need Christian wisdom and biblical discernment as never before.

Ron Rhodes, 5 Minute Apologetics for Today

That phone call that dreary night will never be forgotten, at least by me.  And I wasnโ€™t even the person in trouble.  I wasnโ€™t the one who desperately needed to hear the right words to save a life.  But I was in need of knowing the right words to say.  And because I didnโ€™t have the wisdom, the strength of faith I have now, I must take part of the blame for ending a life that night.

My friendโ€™s voice was filled with desperation.  She was pregnant.  She was also just 19, a college student far from home, a woman who was having an affair with a married man (who had also gotten another woman pregnant).  I had counseled her before, over and over, trying to get her to stop seeing this man.  He was slimy and untrustworthy.  But of course, he was oh so different with her โ€“ a genuine prince apparently.  And so, a life of unwanted, unprepared motherhood was staring at her in the face.  What would she tell her parents?  How could she show her face?  My immediate response? โ€œYou must get an abortion of course.โ€

This young woman who dreamed of being married one day and having many children was looking for a way to erase her mistakes.  To reboot her dream of becoming a nurse first then having a family.  And I helped her take what seemed to be the easy path.  We washed our hands of it all and moved forward with both our lives.  But I have never forgotten what I did.  And I doubt she has either.

I wasnโ€™t a Christian at the time but I was a member of the human race.  A person that valued fairness and justice.  A person who for the most part thought she was a โ€œgood person.โ€  I had no one in my life telling me different, showing me a different way.  It wasnโ€™t until I drew closer to Jesus that I realized how far from the truth I was really living.

The problem was I then swung too far in the other direction.  I took up the mantle of โ€œtruthโ€ and forgot about the Royal Commandment โ€“ to love one another.  And I think when we Christians get ourselves mired in political and social issues we can forget about that place of balance that God seeks for us.  We can forget about what we are really needing to accomplish in Godโ€™s name.

In the United States, the Republican/conservative/right leaning parties are automatically associated with Christians.  And yes, there are many of the same values involved.  But to assign our faith to one political partyโ€™s platform is a mistake in so many ways.  For one, it politicizes the message of Jesus. For another it assumes that all party stances are within the biblical realm.  It also assumes there arenโ€™t people in other parties that profess their Christian faith.

And so, when we come personally up against a faith/biblical/moral issue we may frequently pull back from our commission of helping others out of a sin-filled life because we donโ€™t want to be labeled a โ€œright winger,โ€ a โ€œbigot,โ€ a โ€œnut jobโ€ or any other derogatory statements.

To be fair, too many of our churches have either abdicated their responsibility to teach their flock about so many hot button issues such as homosexuality and abortion and how to respond correctly.  While others have so politicized their churches you canโ€™t tell the difference on a Sunday between a patriot rally and a sermon.

A new friend of mine told me how she was visiting various churches trying to find a new church home.  One visit took place on the 4th of July โ€“ the U.S. Day of Independence.  As she stood for the beginning worship, she noticed all the songs were patriotic ones.  And when the US flag was marched in by worshippers, she got up to leave.  At the door the pastor stopped her and asked why she was leaving.  Her response?  โ€œI came to worship God, not the United States.โ€  She loves her country but her love of God doesnโ€™t have anything to do with her country.

And so, like the women in my Bible study groups we ask questions that our churches fail to address or in the way they need to be addressed.  We feel safe to dig deep into what the Bible truly says about homosexuality, transgenderism, abortion, and more.  But we arenโ€™t theologians โ€“ thatโ€™s why we go to church.   To hear the Word of God taught to us in ways we can turn around and use them out in the world.  Itโ€™s sad, to be honest, to hear Christians desperate for knowledge and yet left unfed week after week.

One of the ladies in my study group recently had a profound breakthrough related to this topic.  She is very sweet and prides herself on creating good relationships.  But she realizes her desire to not โ€œrock any boatโ€ has also been an excuse for not speaking the truth + love when it is needed most.  โ€œIโ€™ve realized that in the past I had the excuse of being naรฏve as to the expectation of what God wants from me.  But I canโ€™t use that excuse anymore.  I know he wants me to contend for the faith.  I know what is truly at stake.  Iโ€™m now struggling to see what that looks like for me,โ€ she said.

Iโ€™m not going to take each major issue facing our world today because I am not a theologian with lots of important degrees to back up my words.  But I will direct you to the steps you might take to be better prepared when your friend tells you their daughter wants to start hormone treatments to become a man.   Or, when your co-worker tells you that having a nice house in a nice neighborhood is white privilege and you should be ashamed.  We also need to be prepared to step back and know when a political issue maybe doesnโ€™t have any biblical connection at all and just must be looked at from a โ€œgood citizenโ€ point of view.  Because yes, not everything we deal with is a faith hill to die on โ€“ but how we deal with those issues is.

Youโ€™ll remember at the beginning of this post I referenced the book 5 Minute Apologetics for Today.  It was written in 2010.  But youโ€™ll find most of the issues we face currently.  Itโ€™s a great, easy read for giving us biblical perspectives.  In addition, here are 4 steps that were recently explained in my current Bible study on Jude.

As background, Jude (Jesusโ€™ brother) was writing to a church that was infiltrated by false teachers.  Teachers who were leading lives and encouraging believers to give themselves over to sexual immorality and more.  Towards the end of his letter, before he tells the believers how to confront the false teachers, he gives them these four pieces of advice:

  1. Build up your knowledge and confidence in the Word.  Learn about and study the Bible, Godโ€™s character, His promises and the judgment to come.  Be immersed by also finding a good biblical teaching church โ€“ not one that just tells you some good stories each week.  Join Bible studies and do the work! Jude 20/Eph 2:19
  2. Pray not in the flesh but in the Spirit.  Go to the Holy Spirit and ask for help in what to pray.  By doing so youโ€™ll show God your dependence on Him.  Ask for help in knowing what issues you should be concerned about and which you should just leave alone. Jude 20/Rom 8:26-27
  3. Keep yourself in the love of God.  Fight to resist your own passions and doctrine that keeps you separated from God.  Lean into God for His promises and His direction. Jude 21/John 15:9
  4. Stay in the hope of the mercy that is waiting for you.  As Jackie Hill Perry says about this, โ€œWe have been saved from Godโ€™s wrath for God.โ€  The knowledge and hope of what is to come when Jesus returns should feel like a protection.   We have something better in store for us than manโ€™s approval.  We need to keep our sights on this so the persecution we might face doesnโ€™t silence us. Jude 21/Heb 11:25-26

On a final note, I want to encourage you to do a study on Revelation.  It helps to do it with others.  Donโ€™t just read Revelation.  Itโ€™s probably too confusing to be honest.  A good study with people you trust will reveal to you what so many of our churches seem to fail to remind us each and every week โ€“ that judgment is coming to all.  We have a greater commission than just being โ€œnice Christians.โ€  We are commissioned to help God save souls.  We might want to start in our own households.

Living In The Light

For God, who said, โ€œLet light shine out of darkness,โ€ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of Godโ€™s glory displayed in the face of Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:6

Iโ€™ve been thinking a lot about separateness lately.  As the world seems to move farther and farther away from the message of Christ, I find myself feeling separated from so much of the goings on.  Politics, social and moral issues that the world promotes appear to be so upside down.  At times Iโ€™ve asked, โ€œWhere is God in all of this?โ€

โ€œImagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of – throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.โ€

C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

โ€œWhat on earth is He up to?โ€ is, I suppose, the better question.  Since the beginning of time Godโ€™s work has been about separateness.  He separated the dark from the light.  The land from the sea.  The heavens from the earth.  He even set apart man from beast.  And when He commanded that there would be light it also meant He would set apart good from evil.  From that day on He started working in our hearts to bring us into the light.  The light that Jesus gave direct access to through His sacrifice.

Iโ€™ve been visiting a new church with my husband.  The pastor is Adriel Sanchez.  Some of you may recognize him as one of the duo from Core Christianity โ€“ a podcast and radio show heard around the world.  His church has begun a new series on Genesis.  And he spoke on the creation of light and dark.

God created beauty, order and light and He didnโ€™t need ingredients.  He made them out of nothing, darkness.

Pastor Adriel Sanchez

He went on to put the Jewish (and eventually Christian) creation story in to context.  The Jews were most likely wandering in the desert when this story was possibly given to Moses from God.  Their lives were dark and chaotic.  And while other religions of the time, just like today, have their own creation story, those religions created gods out of what was created โ€“ the Sun God, Moon God, God of Nature, etc.  Youโ€™ll notice in Genesis that the sun and moon arenโ€™t called those names.  Possibly to avoid man from elevating them to a worshipping status.  God created all the things that these other religions made into little gods.

We werenโ€™t created to serve the sun, the moon, or nature.  They were created FOR man by God.

Pastor Adriel Sanchez

When you think about what God did for us humans itโ€™s pretty amazing.  Think about a gift you received that was the best gift ever.  Do you remember how you thanked the person who gave it to you?  Now imagine this gift that God gave us.  The light, the land, the skies, the animals.  How could we ever thank Him enough?  All He has ever asked of us is to set ourselves apart from the darkness.

Our hearts are like the wilderness โ€“ dark and chaotic.  And God says to our hearts, โ€œLet there be light!

Pastor Adriel Sanchez

So letโ€™s go back to C.S. Lewis’ imagery of rebuilding the house.  God is working on rebuilding the world.  God works on large scale projects while also working on our tiny little bathroom remodel.  Itโ€™s the same work schedule He has maintained throughout history. Thereโ€™s a lot of knocking down walls going on.  And with that comes a lot of pushback from people who donโ€™t want the light to enter in the room.  They enjoy living in the darkness in order to put themselves and their desires at their center.

Iโ€™ve heard people talk disparaging about the Bible โ€“ its violence especially.  Many uneducated about the Bible take issue with destroying whole towns and killing off all the residents.  But put in context it was a major remodel taking place.  Those cities were rife with termites and rot.  Child sacrifices and unbridled sexual exploits all in the name of satisfying some fertility god were rampant.  They were just plain evil.

And while God was using other people and the Jews to destroy those darkened places He made it a point to work in each and every Israeliteโ€™s heart.  He cared about behavior but He cared more for bringing light to their hearts and minds.  They were to act like people set apart from the darkness. He cared enough about us, as individuals, to first send His Son and then leave us with the light of His Holy Spirit to dwell in each of us.

Itโ€™s hard to live set apart from the world.  It may cause our faith, at times, to wane.  But Iโ€™m finding when I change my question from โ€œWhere is God?โ€ to โ€œWhat on earth is He up to?โ€ it helps me to see His work in me and the world.  For when I see my Savior I surely want to be remodeled, a house full of light.

A Clean Sweep

One of my favorite types of tv shows are the ones where brave souls go in and clean out other peopleโ€™s houses.  In one show, just one room was to be completely re-done.  The host would help the homeowner remove all the items from that room and put them out on their front lawn.  There were three piles: Keep, Toss, Sell.   Iโ€™m a confessed tv โ€œback talkerโ€ so I yell at and talk to the tv all the time.  What typically happens during these shows is I yell at the homeowner saying, โ€œWhat on earth do you need that for?โ€ or โ€œThat is the ugliest chair I have ever seen!  Get rid of it!โ€  Iโ€™m always mystified by the amount of junk people pile up in their homes and how difficult it is for them to get rid of it all โ€“ even under the threat of eviction or possibly social services removing their children.

Most of us look at a hoarderโ€™s life and recognize how destructive it is.  The filth, the squalor, the sheer quantity of stuff is appalling.  We sit in judgement thinking, โ€œI would never get to that point in my life.โ€  The truth is a hoarderโ€™s problem isnโ€™t with the โ€œstuffโ€ itโ€™s with their heart.  Even on shows such as โ€œBiggest Loserโ€ we find most contestantโ€™s real issues lie within their hearts, itโ€™s just that they have turned to food to fix their pain.

โ€œTherefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the Word planted in you, which can save you.โ€ย ย

James 1:21

Now doesnโ€™t that sound easy?ย ย Just about as easy as a hoarder having to let go of the paper their 40 year old son wrote as a second grader. On day 1 James made it clear we would have trials and tribulations.ย ย Some of us have been physically or emotionally abused.ย ย Others have been neglected by loved ones.ย ย While others have experienced unbearable loss โ€“ of a child, a parent, a friend, a job, a home.ย ย And there are the multitudes whose dreams and hopes have yet to materialize.ย ย And yet none of those gives us license by God to sin, to bring โ€œmoral filthโ€ into our lives.

Warren Wiersbe says this about filling our lives with immorality:

โ€œFor God to be able to use us as vessels we must be empty, clean, and available.ย ย He will take us and use us for His glory.ย ย But if we are filled with sin or defiled by disobedience, He will first have to purge us.โ€

Purge us.  That is the death we read about frequently in the Bible.  In Matthew 16: 16, Jesus states this, โ€œWhoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.โ€   We purge the world from our hearts and minds and live a life worthy of being Godโ€™s vessel.

Some might think this means we take away freedoms, we remove fun and laughter, we become like monks or nuns.ย ย But think back to a hoarderโ€™s house that is now cleaned out.ย ย Or even your own house after a good purging and cleaning.ย ย We breathe a sigh, put our hands on our hips and declare, this is good, this is real good.ย ย We even start imagining being able to invite our friends over for dinner, new uses for that now empty cupboard, or how easy it is to find what you need.ย ย We feel a sense of freedom, of joy, of completeness.

It may be hard work but a clean house sure feels good!

Now take that same feeling and apply it to our other actions or decisions.  Do you have that same sense?  When we are unforgiving, rude, vengeful, deceitful, unfaithful, untrustworthy, does that give you the same feelings of joy?

One of the reasons we might not take a stand against the filth infiltrating our lives is the fear of man.ย ย In fact, the disciple Peter was a great example of this.ย ย He talked a good talk about being faithful to Jesus and the other disciples.ย ย But when it came time to stand firm, he chose to protect himself.ย ย He was afraid of what servant girls would think or do to him if he confirmed he was a disciple.ย ย And yet, in John 18:15 the story clearly states โ€œanother discipleโ€ also stood with Jesus in front of his accuser.ย ย That unnamed disciple wasnโ€™t afraid of man.ย ย He wasnโ€™t afraid to declare himself a follower of Jesus.ย ย What in your life do you know is wrong, is moral filth, and yet you are afraid of the people around you attacking you or judging you should you declare it would no longer be a part of your life?

Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said about constantly fighting the battle against the moral filth of the world, โ€œWhen all is said and done the life of faith is nothing if not an unending struggle of the spirit with every weapon against the flesh.โ€  Meaning just like a severely overweight person who needs to battle their demons to help them lose weight, the road to cleaning our hearts and minds is constant and challenging.

Even Nelson Mandela said,

โ€œI am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying.โ€

So how do we go about this cleansing?ย ย We definitely donโ€™t want to be like the Pharisees that Matthew admonishes in 23:25, โ€œYou clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.โ€ย ย Remembering that James is written to people who profess to be Christians, we need a heart and mind change, not just a physical one.

Have a conversation with God: We already know some of the areas of our life that donโ€™t measure up to Godโ€™s desires for us.ย ย But He may also reveal other areas that we have hidden away, possibly underlying causes for our behavior and actions.ย ย Ask Him to shine a light on your โ€œmoral filth.โ€ย ย Ask him to take it away.ย ย Ask him to strengthen you.ย ย Ask Him first thing in the morning to set up your day for success.ย ย Ask Him to help you as you encounter your trouble areas, thank Him for His protection.

โ€œIn the morning Lord you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.”

Psalm 5:3

Listen to God: He speaks to us through His Word, the Holy Bible so read it and study it like any other self-help book.ย ย Write down passages that speak to your particular issues and needs.ย ย He speaks to us through other people.ย ย There are probably people in your life already telling you what areas need to be cleansed.ย ย Stop being defensive and start being thankful!ย ย God whispers to us directly and guides us.ย ย If, as youโ€™re walking into the bar you know you shouldnโ€™t and that voice keeps telling you to go home, then go home.ย ย Stop ignoring Him.

โ€œI will listen to what God the lord says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants.”

Psalm 85:8

Act on His Words: We all know people whose lives are a mess.ย ย Theyโ€™ve heard the message over and over about how to fix their lives.ย ย The part thatโ€™s missing is just doing it.ย ย When we absolutely know we shouldnโ€™t text that person and yet do it anyway we dismiss Godโ€™s will.ย ย The recognition that God is the most powerful, all seeing, all knowing being must be part of our lives.ย ย We canโ€™t hide from God.ย ย We can think we are deceiving Him but we arenโ€™t.ย ย He is our โ€œover watch,โ€ โ€“ He looks ahead and see the enemyโ€™s position and provides us protection.ย ย But if we choose to take a different path we put ourselves in danger.

โ€œTurn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever.โ€

Psalm 37:27

What is distracting you or holding you back from fully following Christ?ย ย What rooms in your life need to be purged and left clean?ย ย Ask God for his loving spotlight to shine in every recessed area.ย ย Listen for His guidance.ย ย And walk with faith and strength knowing He is guiding you.

What is an area that you are struggling with the most when it comes to following Christ?
