Amazing Truths

And as he taught them, he said,ย โ€œIs it not written: โ€˜My house will be called a house of prayer for all nationsโ€™?ย But you have made it โ€˜a den of robbers.โ€™โ€

The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,ย because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

Mark 11:17-18

Recently, during a road trip my husband and I were listening to the Robertsonโ€™s Unashamed podcast.ย ย The topic was the concept of being โ€œcancelledโ€ by society.ย ย In 2014, GQ magazine contacted the Duck Dynasty patriarch, Phil Robertson, to delve into this bearded phenomenon.ย ย During the interview he was asked for the definition of sin.ย ย He went on to quote 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterersย nor men who have sex with menย nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlersย will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Cor 6: 9-10

And he got cancelled.ย ย Literally.ย ย The producers put the show on hiatus โ€“ for quoting the Bible.ย ย Now, of course, we all can imagine the uproar.ย ย The media quoted Mr. Robertson as though it were his own words, calling him a homophobe and all sorts of names.ย ย Very few, in fact only a newspaper out of London, made it clear he was quoting from the Bible.ย ย As we like to say now, it was a lot of fake news.ย ย The truth was so easily accessed and so readily ignored.ย ย Here was a man who had few, if any secrets โ€“ and absolutely none about his faith journey.ย ย He was on an internationally televised show praying and preaching.ย ย And yet amazingly enough the media seemed shocked he believed in, taught, and quoted the Bible.

Jesus, in Mark 11, walks into the temple in Jerusalem and begins driving out the street vendors.ย ย When questioned by the chief priests He makes it clear what God expects from the people and the use of His temple.ย ย The priests were so frightened by the truths being spoken to the people that they wanted Jesus โ€œcancelled.โ€ย ย But do you notice the last part of the sentence? โ€œโ€ฆbecause the whole crowd was amazed at His teaching.โ€ย ย The people wanted to know the true Word of God and they listened with rapt attention.ย ย It frightened those in charge of their probable loss of power over the people.

What Phil Robertson is comfortable with is teaching the true Word of God to the people.ย ย Human sin is at the beginning through the end of the Bible. And much as we might like to, we arenโ€™t to pick and choose from which sins God has spoken.ย ย The truth of sin is written in every single book of the Bible.ย ย When our pastors and faith leaders ignore these truths, it handicaps us in our full understanding of Godโ€™s character and His expectations of us.

My husband and I were talking about this after listening to the Unashamed podcast.ย ย If we never hear that we are all sinners, we are left with the impression that maybe only some people sin or thereโ€™s various levels of sinfulness.ย ย It isnโ€™t just โ€œthose peopleโ€ who are sexually immoral, who lie, who cheat, who create false idols.ย ย Itโ€™s all of us to one extent or another.ย ย Thatโ€™s the truth.ย ย Iโ€™ve never met someone in all the various Bible study and small groups that hasnโ€™t admitted to some kind of sin.ย ย But thatโ€™s only the first step to Godโ€™s amazing truths.

When the apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth he chastised them for their lax ways related to sin, especially sexual sin. It was being justified through false teachings. And it was tearing them apart. If we donโ€™t learn about sin how can we then learn true grace and forgiveness?ย ย I want to be on the โ€œright sideโ€ of God โ€“ not making up my own understandings.ย ย When our faith leaders avoid uncomfortable conversations like abortion, homosexuality, infidelity, etc how then are we lay people to fully understand how to treat people with grace, love, kindness and forgiveness?ย ย All are welcome to church but what does it mean to welcome someone who is sinning right now?ย ย What does it mean to have been sexually immoral or have had an abortion and now I want to live a Christian life?

I sin constantly.ย ย When I make a commitment to God to not use His name in vain and then turn around and cuss and use coarse language Iโ€™m sinning.ย ย I have a very difficult time honoring my parents and not trashing them to my inner circle (heck, even my outer, outer circle).ย  I encouraged a friend to have an abortion. I lived with my husband before we were married. ย Iโ€™m prideful.ย ย I covet.ย ย I place idols above God.ย ย None of these make me any better or worse than those who commit the sins we tend to think as the โ€œbiggies.โ€ย ย And yet we dance around the truth of sin and its effects on our lives and the world.

God is the Alpha and Omega.ย ย He is always complete.ย ย He is always teaching us and bringing us full circle.ย ย We need to live in that completeness.ย ย The completeness that His amazing truths, as revealed in the Bible, tell us includes opening our eyes to sin AND our hearts to grace.ย ย Grace without the โ€œwhat and whyโ€ is almost meaningless.ย ย Itโ€™s like a teenager tossing a snide โ€œsooooorrrryy.โ€ย ย We want that teenager to understand what was wrong about their action and why.ย ย The apology, when spoken from the heart, means so much more.ย ย If we run around tossing out blind acceptance, thinking it is love and grace, we miss out on the opportunity to really dig into Godโ€™s amazing plan for us.ย ย

I want to be held to account by God.ย ย I want to be amazed by the truths written in His Book.ย ย ย And if knowing and speaking those truths to fellow Christians or people asking me what God says about a topic then so be it.ย ย Because I am learning the complete truth.ย ย I am learning each day how to have open eyes tied to an open heart.ย ย His amazing truths about my sin are made complete with His amazing truths about His love.

The Amazing Sacrifice

โ€œTeacher,โ€ the man replied, โ€œIโ€™ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.โ€ Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. โ€œThere is still one thing you havenโ€™t done,โ€ he told him. โ€œGo and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.โ€ At this the manโ€™s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, โ€œHow hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!โ€ This amazed them. But Jesus said again, โ€œDear children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God. In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!โ€ The disciples were astounded. โ€œThen who in the world can be saved?โ€ they asked. Jesus looked at them intently and said, โ€œHumanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.โ€ Then Peter began to speak up. โ€œWeโ€™ve given up everything to follow you,โ€ he said. โ€œYes,โ€ Jesus replied, โ€œand I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News, will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and propertyโ€”along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life. But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then.โ€

Mark 10:29-31

There was one point in my life โ€“ actually a few weeks ago (I hate to admit) โ€“ where I would sit on my couch in utter angst and anxiety. No, not about important things, but about wall dรฉcor. Yup, you heard it. I would sit on my couch with anxiety about the lack of cute, trendy wall dรฉcor and decorations in my apartment. I was so anxious about what people would think of us when they came over, I was so anxious about having cute Fall dรฉcor before โ€œPumpkin Spice Seasonโ€ hit. What was I going to do? Hobby Lobby FOR SURE by now has already off-loaded all of their Fall dรฉcor for Christmas stuff โ€“ the best stuff has already been bought and picked through. What was I going to do? As my heart rate started to rise, I heard the Lord say to me โ€œDo you think I care about any of this?โ€ My anxious thoughts stopped. I listened and heard again โ€“ โ€œDo you think the things on your walls are treasures you will store in Heaven?โ€ Woah โ€“ I heard the message loud and clear.

I was toiling over useless, temporary, meaningless possessions INSTEAD of spending that time storing up REAL treasures in Heaven. I was convicted.

Now, Iโ€™m not saying decorating your house or shopping at Hobby Lobby is a sin. What I am saying is to consider the weight we put on those things. Iโ€™m asking us to consider if weโ€™ve made material things idols in our lives

Jesusโ€™ words in Mark 10:29-31 cut me deep to the core โ€“ I hope they do for you too. These verses stir me to ask myself, โ€œHow much of my life is spent toiling over temporary gains?โ€ Reading Jesusโ€™ words over again alleviate many of my silly โ€“ yet very real โ€“ anxieties about possessions and material things. We must remember that the Lord God does not look upon us and see the things weโ€™ve collected, the money weโ€™ve made or the beautiful house weโ€™ve decorated for Fall. No โ€“ He sees His son standing as an eternal sacrifice for our sins. He sees us as his prodigal children whom He loves.

This truth truly amazes me. As the world tells us that we need this, we need that โ€“ this will give you favor in the eyes of man and this will surely bring you pleasure and happiness โ€“ God says lay it all down. Give it all up. And for those of you that ask, โ€œDoes He really mean ALL of it?โ€ I would say โ€“ to some extent โ€“ yes. Our first fruits (earnings) should always go to the Lord, and as Jesus said in Luke 16:

โ€œOne who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.โ€

Luke 16:10

No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.โ€

Luke 16:13

If I am covetousness of what little I have โ€“ how much more will sin grow within my heart the more I gain? The Lord was speaking a very important truth to me that day. For material things are not of ANY value to Him. He wants my heart. He wants my attention. He wants my full dedication โ€“ things that cost nothing โ€“ but everything at the same time.

The disciples couldnโ€™t believe what Jesus was saying. For their entire lives they saw the Chief Priests and Kings lavished with riches and luxuries. To them, those were the people who were closest to God. They were experiencing a real-time paradigm shift. You mean to say that now the lame, the weak, the poor are the blessed? Not the rich and noble?  Pretty amazing stuff!

What Jesus was getting at here is that the more possessions one has, the more divided his heart becomes. The more his money has gone to things other than Kingdom purposes. He warned his disciples loud and clear that being rich was not the way into the Kingdom of God. No, it was intimacy with the Father, sacrifice and a dedication to seeing salvation sweep across the nations.

So โ€“ why are we so enthralled by things of this Earth? I urge you to spend time in prayer today asking God to reveal what youโ€™ve been idolizing recently. I pray that the next time you find yourself coveting someone elseโ€™s possessions, you direct your thoughts, your anxieties and worries to the amazing God-given things above โ€“ blessings that will reward you many treasures in Heaven.

Amazed By His Will

After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the manโ€™s ears. Then he spitย and touched the manโ€™s tongue.ย He looked up to heavenย and with a deep sighย said to him,ย โ€œEphphatha!โ€ย (which meansย โ€œBe opened!โ€).ย At this, the manโ€™s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.ย But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it.ย People were overwhelmed with amazement. โ€œHe has done everything well,โ€ they said. โ€œHe even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.โ€

Mark 7:33-37

I love this story. Not just because itโ€™s a bit humorous in nature, I mean cโ€™mon, Jesus didnโ€™t HAVE to spit and touch the manโ€™s tongue to heal him or shout to the heavens to cure his deafness. He could have healed the man with no words and no actions, with just one look. But Jesusโ€™ actions show that He truly knew the hearts of the people. He had seen over and over again just how feeble the people were in their faith. He knew they needed clear evidence that He was who He said He was.ย

Even more amazing than Jesus concealing his immediate power to tend to the hearts of the people is the immediate authority he has over disease. The verses claim that at the sound of His voice, deafness falls and lameness disappears.ย In the face of Jesus, darkness cowers in fear.

Theย lightย shinesย inย theย darkness,ย andย theย darknessย hasย notย overcomeย it.

John 1:5

Just as this verse reminds us of Jesusโ€™ power over the dominion of darkness, let it also be a reminder that what He speaks will be done. Even more amazing, everything on earth and in heaven bows to His authority, because he is the one who created it all (Gen. 1:1).ย

Jesus told the manโ€™s ears to open and they opened. Jesus told Peter that there would come a day when he would deny him three times โ€“ and that day came. What the Lord spoke in prophesies in the Old Testament came to pass through His Son on the cross.ย

We see over and over again thatย God is a faithful God, who fulfills his promises to His people. Are you trusting in that truth today?ย  Be amazed today that God will keep all of the below promises to you, for He is a man of His Word.

  • Amidst your worry, anxiety and fear, I will give you restโ€ฆ. (Matt. 11:28)
  • Through my Sonโ€™s wounds on the cross, your brokenness has been redeemed (1 Peter 2:24)
  • I promise that your trials will produce joy (James 1:2)
  • I give strength to the weary (Isaiah 40:29)ย
  • I give wisdom to all those who ask of it. I will provide you everything you need for the situations you are in. (James 1:5)
  • I promise, that if you resist the devil HE WILL FLEE. (James 4:7)ย

Rest in these truths today. I encourage you to find more on your own. Take time to remember all of the things that have come to pass, the promises that have been fulfilled and ask God today for the strength and faith to believe that what He says, will be done, today, tomorrow and the next.ย

His Amazing Covenant

Iโ€™m currently doing two different Bible studies โ€“ one that focuses on 1 & 2 Kings and another that accounts Jesusโ€™ last words in John.ย ย What strikes me about both is that as Godโ€™s children, we always seem to fail.ย ย We fail and we fail and we fail, yet He forgives and forgives and forgives.ย ย How amazing is that?ย ย

This week, I asked my BSGs (Bible Study Girls) a question: โ€œDoes God punish us?โ€  It led to a great discussion and a lot of contemplation.  The Old Testament is full of quite a lot of โ€œpunishment.โ€  We often see kingsโ€™ children die because of the โ€œevil they did in the eyes of the Lord.โ€ (1 Kings 15:34; 1 Kings 16:2, 7, 19, 26 and 31)  I mean, they just couldnโ€™t seem to figure out this whole obedience to God thing.  Most notably, King Zimri (1 Kings 16: 15-20) was so tainted by greed and power that his reign only last seven days before he died in a fire as consequence of his own sin. All the droughts, wars, disease and more โ€“ were all signs of a nation enthralled by the flesh rather than Godโ€™s authority and power.

These Old Testament stories often leave a bad taste in both the Christian and non-Christianโ€™s mouth. At the surface, they paint Godโ€™s wrath in vivid colors and appall those who canโ€™t grasp why God would let such terrible things happen to his chosen nation. The reality is, God is wrathful โ€“ and we mustnโ€™t forget that. But He is also a loving God whose plan was always Jesus, from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21. With that truth, we can re-read the story of the seven plagues, the 40 years in the wilderness and the tragedies of King David and know that God works all things for our good and His Glory โ€“ because of Jesus. At the center of this undeserving covenant we gain through Jesus is a desire for obedience and faithfulness to Godโ€™s Word BECAUSE we know the amazing sacrifice that was made for us on the cross. Amidst this, there is grace โ€“ so much grace. For God still knows that all of His children have fallen short of His glory, and will continue to fall short until we are joined in heaven one day. His plan has always been of love and forgiveness.  And thatโ€™s pretty amazing.

So, my BSGs and I  came to the conclusion that yes, there are consequences for sin and we will most likely always be hanging on tight to a pendulum that is constantly swinging between faith and doubt, but amidst that, we must trust that His plan is better and good, and right.

Besides, how often do we look in judgment at the disobedient child in the grocery store or in a restaurant and mutter to ourselves โ€œLooks like that child needs some discipline.โ€ Yet, we scoff and โ€œfind it hard to believeโ€ in a God who disciplines His children โ€“ for their good and His Glory. We must find comfort in knowing we have a Father who loves us so much that he disciplines us.

For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yieldsย the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.ย

Hebrews 12:11

I, for one am thankful to now be living under the loving discipline of a perfect Father. Knowing what it is like to live without an earthly one and living a majority of my life outside of Godโ€™s will, fulfilling the desires of my flesh โ€“ I am utterly grateful and amazed to have a God who cares for my heart and soul. I struggle to control situations, control those around me and those I love. When I realize that this control stems from a lack of trust in the love of my heavenly Father, I begin to loosen my grip and experience true freedom. Godโ€™s power to overwhelm me with His love is amazing. His forgiveness for me is amazing. His grace for me is amazing.ย

Once I started truly studying the Word of God, and Jesusโ€™ teachings, in the Bible I realized how loving, how amazing the character of God is.  He always has our best interest in mind.  He is always leading us to something better.  He never gives up on us, no matter how many times we give up on Him. Jesusโ€™ lineage, as seen in Matthew 1, is made up of a bunch of people just like us. People who have failed God. People like King David who is the textbook example of a sinner, yet He is a sinner whose household was redeemed because of Jesus.

Nevertheless, for Davidโ€™s sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem.

1 Kings 15:4

So today, as we enter a tumultuous, unnerving time in the United States, I challenge you to join me in finding amazement in God each day. From now until the end of November, check back every day for encouragement and guidance through the scripture as we visit several examples of how Jesus left those around him amazed.

Although we may lack faith or struggle to believe that His plans for our world are good, we must remember the plan God had for the early nation of Israel. The first part of that redemption has already been fulfilled, now we must wait expectantly for the amazing work He has in store.

Living Amazed

From the first day of Earth to today, God has been doing amazing things in our lives. And when Jesus preached and performed miracles, the Bible frequently says the people were amazed. Each day we get up to start a new day. Each day we put our feet on the floor, have breakfast, brush our teeth, and then go about our daily routine. We do the laundry, wash the dishes, log in another long day at work. It’s so easy to live in the humdrum of every day. But God is still doing amazing things!

I’ve spent much of my adult life being a pessimist. As I grew closer to Jesus it became almost impossible to continue looking at life, people and circumstances constantly from a negative point of view. God transformed me. And that, my friends, is pretty darn amazing.

Join me and my special guest writer as we explore all the amazing acts of Jesus starting November 1 through 29. My hope is that each day we will help you take these amazing Jesus acts and translate them into your amazing life.

Are you ready to explore and enjoy this amazing God-given life through Jesus? Join us by signing up today to receive your emailed posts!

Wheat or Chaff

Before I sat down to write this final word on the Book of James, I re-read through the five chapters and my highlighted notes.ย ย What struck me was how perfectly Jamesโ€™ words speak to the state of our current world.ย ย In February 2020, as news of the Covid19 virus started coming in from around the world we didnโ€™t think too much about it.ย ย Another type of flu, meh.ย ย And suddenly March was upon us.ย ย Our lives were shutdown.ย ย Justified or not, our businesses closed, so many allowed fear to grip them into locking themselves in their homes, we ran out of toilet paper, our churches stopped welcoming us into their doors, and we watched rioters burn down cities.ย ย Some of us turned away from God and others of us ran toward Him.

I told my husband the other day how amazingly well spoken the disciples were.ย ย I think the tendency to think back to โ€œancient timesโ€ may lead us to think they werenโ€™t as smart as us because we value โ€œknowledgeโ€ over โ€œwisdom.โ€ย ย In this short five-chapter letter, Jamesโ€™ gifts shine through.ย ย He is eloquent when using the metaphors of ships and rudders and forest fires and small sparks when speaking of our waggling and dangerous tongues.ย ย He turns into a great debater when providing facts about not showing favoritism and how the famed among us are typically the ones who take advantage of us.ย ย He is a fiery preacher when scolding us to submit and resist the devil.ย ย And a faithful servant reminding us to reach out to God for any and all needs.

I read an introduction to a Bible study on James once that said, โ€œUnlike most books of the New Testament, the letter of James is best known for the people who donโ€™t like it. People like love.ย ย They like Christ.ย ย They donโ€™t like James.โ€ย ย But isnโ€™t that the very reason this letter needed to be written?ย ย Before we are thrown into a crisis like the year 2020, before we face off with the devil, before we walk out the door to deal with unhappy, non-believers, James wants to shake us awake.ย ย To give us the tools to stand firm in the face of adversity.ย ย To be Godโ€™s faithful lights for the world.ย ย When I read James, I think of this letter as one for us everyday people.ย ย Itโ€™s a workshop full of concrete โ€œhow toโ€™s.โ€ย ย Thereโ€™s nothing wishy washy or confusing about James.

James is a “how to” book for us all

In the midst of the trials of the last few months, how many of us have considered it โ€œpure joy?โ€  (James 1:2) When out for our evening walk the other day, I told my husband how much I have appreciated what has happened.  It forced me to slow down and stop fretting over filling up my daily schedule.  My house got really clean.  We turned to each other for loving support more than ever.  We became a team and God was our head coach.  Iโ€™ve been blessed to spend more time with a particular friend than I wouldnโ€™t normally as she goes through a divorce.  My BSGs (Bible study girls) started meeting in January.  Two of whom I only slightly knew.  We are now prayer warriors for each other.  I asked my husband what positive things have come out of this for him โ€“ in the face of a very difficult work situation.  He said heโ€™s realized who he can really rely on.

Iโ€™ve learned how to be humble.ย ย Iโ€™ve learned to listen to people who have fears that I donโ€™t have and show them grace.ย ย That person driving alone in their car with a full double breather mask pushes me to pray for them to find peace rather than make fun of them.ย ย Because that is what the Word tells us (James 1:23).

The destruction caused by favoritism, hating our neighbor, people lacking in mercy and those living in greed fills our daily news.  People wanting to burn small businesses because they feel their needs are greater. Rioters standing with bullhorns yelling all night into homes because their view of the world comes first.  Employees and businesses โ€œgaming the systemโ€ to get more of the money distributed to help those struggling makes me want to cry. And, I can still picture a couple at Home Depot filling their pick-up truck to its fullest with toilet paper and laughing about it.  (James 2:8, 13, 3:16, 4:17, 5:2).

And if we looked hard enough, we saw churches helping their communities by doing food drives and people volunteering to help at Food Banks.ย ย We saw neighbors supporting each other.ย ย We saw churches fighting to stay open and serve their flocks.ย ย I saw people like Christian worship leader Sean Feucht gathering people by the 100s to pray and worship God outside โ€“ at parks, at beaches, on the streets. I saw friends get on their knees and fully surrender to God. (James 2:8, 14,4:7, 5:19)

In the United States, we are going through an important presidential election.ย ย Iโ€™ve stood at street corners supporting a candidate while the opposing side hurls hatred and curse words at me.ย ย All the while they hold signs telling me to have more compassion and to love certain races.ย ย (James 3:9).ย ย Iโ€™ve watched candidate debates where the lies are piled up not only by the candidate but by the debate moderator and then by the media.ย ย All in order to disguise the true platform of the candidate.ย ย Their yes has not meant yes and their no has not meant no. (James 5:12)

Iโ€™ve said to others that this time seems unprecedent.ย ย And this letter of James seems very prescient.ย ย There is a sifting going on.ย ย Have we chosen to surrender and submit to God?ย ย (James 4:7). Have we thrown up all our worries, our hurts, our sins to God or are we taking them out on others?ย ย (James 5:13-16) Are we working to build up our brothers and sisters in Christ or are we fighting with them?ย ย (James 5:19)

Will we finally surrender it all to God?

James makes it clear, without a lot of flowery prose, as to the destruction we humans can wrought without our eyes firmly on God.ย ย The question is, will we listen and do or will we deceive ourselves?

Thank you for joining me on this journey through James.ย ย I look forward to you joining me with my next series called, โ€œLiving Amazed through Jesusโ€ beginning November 1.ย

A Helping Friend

When my youngest daughter and I started working on our relationship I prayed, a lot.  I prayed what to say the first summer she was home from college.  I prayed each time I visited her.  I asked God to put the right words in my mouth at the right time, with the right heart.  I prayed to have my need to feel hurt and offended by her words be taken from me.  I wanted God to change me so dramatically that my daughter could see that change.  She needed to see that I was doing the work on my own issues.  I had two God moments that have stuck with me during that time.  The first was the summer after her freshmen year.  I knew, from my older daughter, that life was going to change at our house.  We would now have four adults living in our home โ€“ no children.  And so, I prayed for the right words at the right time.   James has taught us so well that when we rely on God in times of trial that wonderous solutions come to us that we might never have thought.  I prayed that her newfound relationship with Jesus would also guide our conversations.

The last few words in the Book of James is really a summary.  He tells us to take all of the wisdom and expectations of the five chapters and work together for the glory of God.  To help those Christians who wander off Godโ€™s track and bring them back into his loving arms.  To guide our children to a life of grace, wisdom and forgiveness.

My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

James 5:19

Which brings me to the second of those God moments.  My daughter and I were on the phone having yet another tense conversation while she was back at school.  Full of misunderstandings and secret expectations (She has since told me she had long felt I had extremely high expectations of her and she didnโ€™t want to fail me).  I took a breath and prayed for God to speak through me.  I stopped talking.  I started listening.  And finally, the right words came.

Me: โ€œI have something to ask of you.โ€

Her: โ€œWhat?โ€

Me: โ€œI am working really hard on trusting God to handle a lot of stuff โ€“ including my fears and hopes and dreams for you.โ€

Her: โ€œUh uh.โ€

Me: โ€œBut I fail, a lot.  Iโ€™m very impressed how you give a lot of grace and forgiveness to your friends, coaches, and teachers.  What Iโ€™m asking for is that you give me some of that same grace and forgiveness for when I fail.โ€

Pin drop.  Godโ€™s words not only diffused the situation but it called on her to look on her own faith.  It asked her to treat me just like any other Christian to whom she shows love.  It took me out of being โ€œjust her momโ€ to being a person.  God was doing a mighty work in that moment.

On a “back to school” road trip

As Christians we probably have Christian friends.  We might have Christian children and spouses.  We should have the expectation to which James exhorts us, which is to help keep our brothers and sisters on track.  We might cringe at that thinking, again, we donโ€™t want to be judgmental people.  But by relying on our faith and reminding others of their faith helps us all to grow closer to Christ.  Itโ€™s that Imperfect Progress my Bible study girls like to talk about.

What is more worthwhile than saving someone from death and covering a multitude of sin?

Faith That Works

If we are in the mindset that our faith is ours and ours alone, we wonโ€™t reach out and bring others to Christ. We wonโ€™t help our brethren when they fall. I was in a Bible study group once where a woman stated she had never had a conversation about Christ with someone other than people at her church. She seemed ok with that. It made me sad. I know that God had put multiple people in her life along the way (she was in her 80s) to help do His work. I know that because that is Godโ€™s nature.

Every person you meet is providential, not accidental.

Phil Hopper, Pastor, Abundant Life Church

So often we think about going out to foreign countries to share our faith when in our own homes and neighborhoods and schools and play groups and Bunco groups and dinner clubs there are people who need Christ.  There are Christians who need our support.  Itโ€™s one thing to gain wisdom from studying His Word and yet another to actually use that wisdom to glorify God.

May we be lumps of salt in the midst of society.

Charles Spurgeon

I like that visual.  To be placed around our neighborhoods and cities for the people to gain something good.  We arenโ€™t to be stockpiling our salt for our own personal use.  We should be anticipating those moments God says, “Here, help my beloved.”

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.  Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.

Phillipians 2: 3-4

In other words, if we look at our salvation as a gift from God, we must also share that gift.  We must also share the love and teachings of Jesus.  By using Jesusโ€™ ways as our touchstone, we can guide others along the way.

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another โ€“ and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10: 24-25

My daughter now will give me biblically based advice when I am struggling.  She reminds me to lean into and on God.  She gently pushes me closer to Jesus.  I had a older friend, who at the beginning of the Covid19 crisis, I checked in on.  I considered him a leader in our church, a man of strong faith.  He was distraught and depressed. He said to me, โ€œI just canโ€™t see God in any of this to be honest.โ€  And me, a person who struggles with memorizing any scripture spoke these words back to him: โ€œYou must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a boat on the waves of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.โ€ (James 1:6) This man of great faith was silent.  And then he said, โ€œThank you.โ€

As a Christian, I need my Christian friends and family to remind me of the promises God has made.  I need nudges back toward His light.  I may even need a whack over the head once in a while.  If we choose not to help each other, think of all the opportunities we have missed to glorify Him and the people we will not have helped save from death. And as for my older daughter, I pray every day of my role in bringing her to Christ. More importantly, I pray that a Christian friend of hers will tell her their testimony and invite her on The Way.`

Heart Lessons

Before I became a Christian and even when I was a โ€œbaby Christianโ€ Iโ€™d hear a lot of phrases from the Bible thrown about by believers and non-believers.ย ย Passages such as โ€œjudge not, lest you be judgedโ€ (Matt 7:1) and โ€œI can do all things through Him who strengthens meโ€ (Phil 4:13) are frequently taken out of context and misused.ย ย And then thereโ€™s the quotes that arenโ€™t even in the Bible such as, โ€œGod helps those who help themselves,โ€ โ€œGod will never give you more than you can handle,โ€ and โ€œLove the sinner, hate the sin.โ€ย ย While all those sound good, we must always be careful not to put words in Godโ€™s mouth.ย ย Along with all of these I think one of the most misunderstood concepts people have is about being wealthy.ย ย Non-believers will use this against successful Christians.ย ย And believers sometimes think having wealth is a sin.ย ย When Jesus said,

โ€œHow hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!ย ย Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.โ€

Luke 18:24

This was in response to asking a wealthy ruler to give up all his power and wealth and come follow Him.ย ย The ruler was very sad because he was very wealthy and he wasn’t all that honest.ย ย Itโ€™s necessary to know that no one is saved by giving up all their wealth.ย ย What Jesus was really asking of the ruler was to be honest about what he coveted.ย ย There was much more going on in this story than a man being told to give up his wealth to follow Jesus.ย ย This is why I keep hearing over and over these days to not just read the Bible but to study it.ย ย Take, for instance, this famous poem by William Wadsworth:

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high oโ€™er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze โ€ฆ

I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud

If we were to just read it for what it basically says we would think he was a lonely man who thought he was a cloud.ย ย And when he saw some flowers he thought they were actually dancing.ย ย Sounds like someone on drugs.ย ย But when we study the poem, we find a beautiful short tale about a man who loves nature and finds joy whenever he sees daffodils. Therein lies the need for great Biblical teachers and pastors.ย

As we explore the last chapter of James, we find him being very angry with the wealthy members of the church.ย ย Not because they are wealthy, but just like the ruler Jesus admonished, they have turned their wealth into their god.ย ย They have cheated and lied all in the name of increasing their wealth.ย ย How many of us today covet our bank account in lieu of helping those in need?ย ย As an American, even our poorest are considered wealthy in relation to other countries.ย ย Just having a home, a steady job, owning one or two cars, having three meals a day, a closet full of clothes, a tv and more, far and away exceed what others have.ย ย And none of that is wrong.ย ย James condemns the wrong use of riches โ€“ using wealth as a weapon rather than a tool to build others up.ย ย Iโ€™ve heard so many people over the years actually worry that Jesus will ask them to give up all their money and become a poor missionary.ย ย I say, if thatโ€™s truly what you are worried about then be careful, that just might be what God asks you to do!ย ย

How many times have you heard people say they’re worried God will ask them to be another ‘Mother Teresa?”

James doesnโ€™t stop there.  Our lack of patience, our lies (both little and big), our lazy prayer life, and our lack of desire to help our fellow Christians grow and be their best in the eyes of Christ, are all on display this week in James 5.

If we arenโ€™t careful so much of James can turn into one of those misused verses or phrases.ย ย If we remember two things as we work on the final week of this study let them be this: 1) it is always about what is in our heart that Jesus cares about and 2) thankfully we are given grace each and every time we confess that we have forgotten the first.

A Girl Transformed

My youngest daughter is a poster child for Godโ€™s transformation.ย ย When she was a toddler, she constantly begged me to buy her bright and shiny things she saw advertised on tv then displayed on the grocery shelves.ย I left the grocery store many times during one of her meltdowns.ย ย As she got older, I heard on a daily basis of her โ€œneeds.โ€ย ย โ€œI need more shorts (from the expensive store).โ€ย ย โ€œI need more pants.โ€ย ย โ€œI need a new straightener.โ€ย ย โ€œI need a new (fill in the blank).โ€ย ย And then there were the social status issues: โ€œOliviaโ€™s mom gets her those, why canโ€™t I have that?โ€ย ย We started calling her the family princess.ย ย My older daughter, who to almost frustration, never asks for anything.ย ย My prayer life was filled with asking for patience.ย ย This beautiful, smart, vivacious, talented, young girl acted like a spoiled brat.ย ย Thankfully, she reserved all the negative behavior for her home life.ย ย Away from home her teachers, coaches, and friends all loved her.ย ย But they didnโ€™t have to live with her.ย ย My husband and I decided enough was enough.ย ย He started planning frequent mission projects for the two of them to participate in.ย ย She taught vacation Bible School.ย ย She got a job.ย ย We knuckled down on all those โ€œneeds.โ€ย ย And then we sent her off to college, waiting for her to start begging us for money each week.

Dad gives her one last hug

James first starts in chapter 1 that we should consider it pure joy whenever we face trials (James 1:2).ย ย I loved my daughter immensely during those younger years.ย ย I enjoyed her humor, her ability to make any situation into a song.ย ย She was a fierce, talented competitor on the field.ย ย She would burst into the house after school and shower me with love.ย ย Thatโ€™s what I would thank God for, not for when things went off the rails.ย ย Without the hard stuff I might not have fully appreciated the good stuff.ย ย So, when I sent her off almost 2,000 miles away for college my house felt quiet, too quiet.ย ย And for her, she came to realize how good she had it at home.ย ย She faced terrible roommates, crazy coaches, and bored, lazy professors.ย ย But she also was led to a relationship with Jesus, thanks to being invited to attend an Athletes In Action meeting.ย ย Her โ€œneedsโ€ became a need to live in Godโ€™s love โ€“ not the world of earthly desires.ย ย She surrendered herself fully and in turn, found what really matters in life โ€“ an eternal love plus the love and friendships that make us better.ย ย Now when she asks, she asks with the right motives.ย ย She asks for Godโ€™s will โ€“ not herโ€™s.

This amazing, transformed, daughter of Christ has plans.ย ย But theyโ€™re Godโ€™s plans.ย ย Her creative mind and her earthly tendency to โ€œwant stuffโ€ is still there.ย ย Itโ€™s amazing to watch her pull it back in.ย ย You can tell that peace dwells more frequently in her.ย ย Before they got married about a year ago, she and her husband went through Dave Ramseyโ€™s Financial Peace program.ย ย Having the desire to do it in the first place showed their spiritual maturity.ย ย They both have great jobs after having graduated college.ย ย And they could have a lot of โ€œstuff.โ€ย ย But they made a plan with God in mind.ย ย My little girl who demanded so much is now so incredibly disciplined.ย ย And yes, she has thanked my husband and I many times over for instilling so many morals and values in her.ย ย But itโ€™s Godโ€™s work that fully planted those in her heart.ย ย I truly believe the trials she went through while in college gave her a choice โ€“ to go down the earthly path or to turn and surrender to God.

James 4 was a message to my daughter.ย ย

โ€œWhen you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives.โ€ (v3)

โ€œYou adulterous people, donโ€™t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God?โ€ (v4)

โ€œSubmit yourselves, then to God.ย ย Resist the devil and he will flee from you.โ€ (v7)

โ€œInstead, you ought to say, if itโ€™s the Lordโ€™s will we will live and do this or that.โ€ (v15)

James 4 is a message to all of us who struggle day in and day out with trying to control our lives.ย ย Trying to get all our โ€œneeds and wantsโ€ satisfied.ย ย Itโ€™s a message to all of us who have put โ€œSelfโ€ in front of God.ย ย Itโ€™s also a message of hope that when we do what we ought to do, when we submit and surrender everything to God, He will draw near to us.ย ย We have a role to play and unless we take our required steps, God cannot finish the work in us. How many of us who struggle with money are willing to spend the next few months going through Financial Peace University?”

And lest we think โ€œthose peopleโ€ are the ones that need to hear this message, the work God had to do in me with my relationship with my daughter was huge.ย ย When I finally surrendered her over to him, when I finally threw up my hands and said, โ€œOk, Iโ€™ve failed, Iโ€™ll try it your way,โ€ I could start mending our relationship.ย ย When I started praying His will, and not mine, great things happened.ย ย ย The planning of her wedding was Godโ€™s gift to both of us.ย ย Had she been the โ€œgirl before Godโ€ she wouldโ€™ve demanded expensive, well, everything.ย ย Instead she and her fiancรฉ put together a tight budget.ย ย We made decorations.ย ย We eliminated needless activities.ย ย God sent them people who would make a cake for $60, a free videographer, an inexpensive caterer.ย ย They wanted the focus to be on Jesus.ย ย It was so darn fun.ย ย

Godโ€™s gifts to me, my two beautiful daughters, are just that โ€“ His gifts.ย ย And like my finances, and my marriage, and my home, I need to be a good steward of His gifts.ย ย So, I pray for His will be done.ย ย And may the devil flee.ย

Words Matter

It would be kind to say I donโ€™t have the best relationship with my parents.  It would be honest to say I donโ€™t really have a relationship with them at all.  What I have is sort of a truce.  Not really with them, but with myself.  When I finally figured out they didnโ€™t really want a loving relationship, I turned to God for help.  I asked Him to help me honor my commitment as their daughter while protecting myself from mental harm.  And so, what God and I have worked out is my parents are people that I happen to know and whom I occasionally have an obligation to check in on.  And I do that with a positive attitude because I know I am right with God.  People to whom Iโ€™ve shared that think itโ€™s sad.  Some think itโ€™s a bit harsh.  Maybe I havenโ€™t tried enough.  Maybe I need to fix something else.  I struggle each year to find motherโ€™s day and fatherโ€™s day cards.  But words matter.  I will no longer lie that they love me dearly.  Because they canโ€™t speak it or show it.  And so, God helped me to develop the right words to define the relationship โ€“ a definition not borne out of anger or hurt but out of a desire to make peace.

Words matter.ย ย If thereโ€™s one simple statement that defines James 3 itโ€™s just that.ย ย We learned this week that once spoken, they canโ€™t be taken back.ย ย They are mirrors into our hearts and minds.ย ย They define from where our daily wisdom is derived.ย ย They can make peace or war.ย ย Words are powerful and they matter.

โ€œThe tongue is like a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.ย ย It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of oneโ€™s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.โ€

James 3:6

Wow.ย ย And yet on average we speak about 15,000 words a day.ย ย Just think of all the forest fires we cause.ย ย Iโ€™d like to think we are doing a lot of peacemaking instead, but do you think that would be true?ย ย James wrote his letter to Christian Jews around 45 AD and almost 2,000 years later his description of our words still rings painfully true.

When we lose control over our mouths and words, weโ€™ve lost control over our hearts and minds.ย ย We pull from the fountain of manโ€™s wisdom.ย ย We seek earthly gain and earthly results.ย ย And then seem surprised when there is conflict.ย ย โ€œWhat? What did I do/say?ย ย Why are you so sensitive? Whatโ€™s her/his problem?โ€ย ย My mom once said to me in the midst of a screaming match, โ€œIโ€™M NOT SCREAMING AT YOU!ย ย JUST BECAUSE YOU WENT TO COLLEGE DOESNโ€™T MEAN YOU CAN TELL ME THAT I AM UPSET!โ€ย ย You want to unpack all that?

Our words (and the way in which we deliver them) can define how we see ourselves in various roles.ย ย Itโ€™s why weโ€™ve been told to stop using certain words like โ€œhousewifeโ€ (domestic worker), โ€œillegal immigrantโ€ (undocumented worker) or โ€œunemployedโ€ (economically inactive).ย ย The connotations behind certain words have become politically incorrect and therefore must be stricken from our mouths.ย ย ย If we only took as much interest and care in what we basically do with our words every day weโ€™d all be a lot better off.

On one hand we can be so quick to correct someone for their โ€œincorrectnessโ€ yet forget that the correction is frequently just what James warns against.ย ย Showing bitterness, lack of humility, and lack of mercy brings about our desires to make sure we shove that correctness down someoneโ€™s throat.ย ย When I hear a younger person deriding an older person for using words such as โ€œorientalโ€ or โ€œstewardessโ€ it shows first, a lack of respect for elders and second, a lack of understanding of historical perspective and therefore a lack of mercy and forgiveness.

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.โ€

James 3:17

I donโ€™t see a lot that going around these days.ย ย However, I can only be responsible for one person โ€“ me.ย ย So, when God and I worked out helping me verbalize my relationship with my parents He made sure I did it with a peaceful heart, a merciful and sincere one.ย ย I couldnโ€™t keep living in a fake world where I thought each time I interacted with them that they werenโ€™t who they are.ย ย I need to accept them as the faulty people we all are.ย ย I needed to stop wanting them to love me and accept the love instead from my husband, my children and my extended family but most of all from Christ.ย ย But I also needed to respect my role as their only child.ย ย

Words matter.ย ย So, I say they are people I happen to know.ย ย People that I check in on every now and then because God wants me to.ย ย I say it matter-of-factly, without anger, without vengeance, without hurt.ย ย God also wants me to pray for them so I do.ย ย I pray every day to have the walls they have solidly built around them, through negativity and a lack of any faith, to be torn down.ย ย And I know those words are powerful and good.ย
