Our Wise and Sanctified Souls

"But you, dear friends, by building yourselves upย in your most holy faithย and praying in the Holy Spirit,ย keep yourselves in Godโ€™s love as you waitย for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life." Jude 1:20-21

You began your journey on the road of the sanctified life by professing your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior.ย ย You may not even have realized what that meant but, you took the step.ย ย You began reading your Bible, going to church, seeking others of faith.ย ย Your Knowledge Basket filled little by little.ย ย Your soul became refreshed and watered at rest stops along the road by the Word.

The inevitable pothole leaps out at you suddenly.ย ย You may even veer off the road a bit.ย ย Your soul takes a beating with heartache and loss.ย ย Your sins become a glaring, flashing red light.ย ย But you look in your Trials Basket and remember God will never leave you or forsake you.ย ย (Deut 31:68) You recall Him telling us to ask in His will and you shall receive.ย ย (Matt 7:7-9)

The verses you so carefully plucked and memorized tell you the Holy Spirit is your strength and He has a plan for good.ย ย We learn such jewels from Proverbs as,ย “Like a dog that returns to his vomitย is a fool who repeats his folly.”ย (Prov 26:11)

You pick up and dust off your bruised soul and get back on the path, gathering experience after experience.ย Confirming over and over the truth of Godโ€™s Word.ย ย The truth that He sees you and knows every hair on your head.ย (Luke 12:7)ย You remember each time a new pothole jumps at you to pray for His hand on your life.ย ย You affirm to โ€œTrust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding, and He will make straight your paths.โ€ (Prov. 3:5)ย

You come to a fork in the road.ย ย To the left you see what appears to be an open, empty road.ย ย Itโ€™s just you and the path.ย ย It looks so easy to take.ย ย To the right you see broken down souls trudging outside the path.ย ย Ones who are weary and thirsty; ones who are lost.ย ย Ones who are being deceived.ย ย Souls who are in need.ย ย But you also see the Holy Spirit ahead, like a busy traffic cop beckoning you forward.ย ย

You must ask yourself, โ€œDo I turn left, lock my doors and enjoy the blessing of salvation by myself?โ€ Or, do I choose to submit myself to the entirety of Godโ€™s teaching?ย ย Will you choose to fill your Stewardship Basket?ย To love your neighbor, to share the Gospel with your family and friends, to give your time, talents and treasure to those in need for the glory of God?ย (Matt 22:39)

Godโ€™s path calls for us to submit ourselves wholly to Him โ€“ not just part.ย ย The โ€œeasy pathโ€ so often doesnโ€™t turn out all that easy.ย ย Itโ€™s a mirage, set up by the devil to deceive.ย ย James tells us a partial faith is โ€œdouble mindedness.โ€ย (James 1:8)ย And that person shouldnโ€™t expect anything from God.ย ย 1 Corinthians 10:31 tells us โ€œSo, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.โ€ย ย It means we take all God has gifted us and we turn it back into glorifying Him to others in need.

As our soul matures along this road, we choose.ย ย Yes, we choose which fork to take.ย ย We choose to submit every sin, every action, every word, every need and every gift for His Kingdom.ย ย When we do, God continues filling our Submission Basket with new experiences and new revelations.ย ย We trust in Him and He gifts us the best road trip snacks โ€“ peace and the security of our eternal future.

"You will keep in perfect peaceย those whose minds are steadfast,ย because they trustย in you.ย Trustย in theย Lord forever,ย for theย Lordย himself, is the Rockย eternal."ย Isaiah 26:3-4

My friends, humans are the only created beings to which God has blessed this amazing opportunity of sanctification.ย ย The animal kingdom obeys Godโ€™s plan instantly upon birth.ย ย They do what they are made to do.ย ย Yet, those actions are limited in scope.ย ย We have so much more opportunity to glorify God with what He has given us!

God has placed us on this road to travel and gather.ย ย Each mile marker brings us new insight into Him, the world, and the adversary.ย ย Wisdom is not a far off mirage.ย ย No, the jewels of wisdom sit firmly in our baskets which have been gathered along the way.

Your commands are always with meย and make me wiserย than my enemies.

I have more insight than all my teachers,ย for I meditate on your statutes.ย ย

I have more understanding than the elders,ย for I obey your precepts.ย ย

I have kept my feetย from every evil pathย so that I might obey your word.ย ย

I have not departed from your laws, for you yourself have taughtย me.

How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honeyย to my mouth!

I gain understandingย from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path.

Your word is a lampย for my feet,ย a lightย on my path.”ย ย Psalm 119:98-106

One day I will be an โ€œold soul.โ€ย ย Right now, however, Iโ€™m working my way down the road of life.ย ย Making mistakes and re-submitting my life to Christ each day.ย ย Forgetting to pray and rely on Godโ€™s sovereignty then having a friend ask me, โ€œHave you prayed about that?โ€

I can feel my soul growing wiser, growing more at peace.ย ย I want my roots to run deep in His Word so I bear good fruit for others to enjoy along the path.ย (Matt 7:17-18)ย But most of all I want to be ever thankful that Jesus took it upon Himself to build this path toward the heavenlies.ย ย

A Path Freely Given

He didnโ€™t have to.ย ย We need to remember that fact when others abuse what Jesus did for us.ย ย When they complain when we re-affirm Jesus is the only Way.ย ย God didnโ€™t have to make a way at all.ย ย Not only did He build it, He gave us the full recipe, He gave us a guide.ย ย All so we can make it safely home.

As I write this my 86 year old, cancer riddled, atheist dad has come to live with us before he travels his final path.ย ย Iโ€™ve had many friends concerned for how hard this will be.ย ย It is hard at times. Especially at 2:00 am when bed clothes and sheets need changing. Or when I must choose to forgo activities dear to me. But I am at peace.ย ย

I realized this the other day.ย ย Itโ€™s a peace Iโ€™ve prayed for a lot in my life.ย ย I never expected during a trial such as this that peace would be what God gifted me on this road.ย ย

The other day, I took my dad for his first ever mani/pedi experience to fix his old crusty toenails.ย ย He loved it.ย ย When I sent my Bible study sisters a photo of him in the salon, one commented: โ€œI love that you are loving on your dad this way!ย ย A foot washing like Jesus would do today!โ€ย

It struck me that I have been sanctified for a time such as this.ย (Esther 4:14)ย Blessed with the opportunity to take the fork to the right and share the love, mercy and salvation message of Jesus Christ with my father.

My friends, I pray that you too will have many opportunities to do the same.

"May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."ย 1 Thessalonians 5:23

Our final question: Whatโ€™s the best lesson you have learned so far on your sanctification journey?

Enjoy Being Set Apart Part Two

Missed part one? Go to emboldened.net/2024/03/25/enjoying-being-set-apart/

I recently was listening to a teaching on the Good Samaritan.  It’s such a popular and well-known parable that it’s become an axiom. In some cases, even the title of laws. In many states in the United States, “good samaritans” are protected from lawsuits if they’ve provided physical aid but an additional injury may have occurred as a result of that help (ie a person giving CPR fractures a person’s rib). For many believers and non-believers this story represents “being nice” or acting kindly to others. Jesus, however, throughout His time on earth spoke basically about only two things: God and His Kingdom.  So, it’s important, however familiar we may be with the parable, to know why the story was told.  It starts with this interaction:

Now letโ€™s look at what was happening.ย ย This lawyer was testing Jesus.ย ย Maybe he wanted Jesus to say, โ€œFollow me.โ€ย ย This would have been heretical for the Jew.ย ย Instead, Jesus points him back to Godโ€™s Word.ย ย Notice the man fully counts himself a wonderful, loving person in his own eyes.ย ย He believes he uniquely and fully loves God with all his heart, mind and soul.ย ย Thereโ€™s apparently no chance he has failed at this overwhelming task. Instead, he wants to parse out the requirements by then asking Jesus, โ€œWho is my neighbor?โ€ย ย

The Old Testament religious Jewish leaders had come to define (erroneously) their โ€œneighborsโ€ as those in their own circle.  People exactly like them.  That allowed them to hate anyone else — other Jews who they deemed unworthy such as tax collectors and then gentiles. They turned “love your neighbor as yourself” into “love your neighbor and hate your enemies.”

Some might say they were justified. I mean God did call on them to eliminate entire groups of people. But biblical scholars will clarify those particular groups actively hated God and sinned in abominable ways against Him. Murderous cultures, child sacrifices, rampant sexual immorality, pillaging and raping innocent people year after year after year. God also had warned them for hundreds of years. They all knew of the God of Abraham and Jacob — as witnessed by the likes of Rahab from Jericho. (Joshua 2:9-13) So, when Israel was directed to take action it was God’s justice, not personal justice. Each man was directed throughout Deuteronomy and Leviticus to treat the foreigner as themselves. Personal vendettas were against the Law. And still the religious leaders contorted God’s Word.

Jesus upends their well-worn, twisted morality by exposing the lack of compassion by the “righteous” versus the godly love by an โ€œoutsiderโ€ or even enemy.  This parable wasnโ€™t about acts of kindness, rather it highlights our sinful tendencies to divide and hate those on the other side of that divide.  That hatred and the distortion of God’s Word leads us in the opposite direction the Jewish lawyer wanted to go. It’s not heaven he will find with a dark heart. Jesus allows the lesson to sink in; the lesson of reminding believers that He sets us apart from the world to do something unthinkable and difficult.  To love others and show mercy as God loves us.

Friend, in Godโ€™s world, the world of eternal life, envy, hatred, greed, and jealousy, have no place.ย ย It didn’t during King Solomon’s time seen in Ecclesiastes 4 and it doesn’t now. True justice for the oppressed and downtrodden is not equity or retroactive punishment or even self-flagellation.ย ย Itโ€™s love.ย ย Itโ€™s the kind of love that looks different than the world.ย ย It says, โ€œLet me help you out of sin.โ€ย ย It gives all that it can and doesnโ€™t hoard the blessings weโ€™ve been given.ย  It looks hatred in the eye and says, “God loves you too.” ย It stops and, without care for itself, gives compassion.ย ย It protects the weak and helpless.ย ย It overflows with mercy and forgiveness. It’s a love that hates only one thing — the hatred of God — yet still prays for that person. It helps us see we are all needy sinners who disobey the Lord regularly and we thank God He abounds in mercy.

We are all, no matter our worldly status, guilty of not loving enough.  Not forgiving enough.  Not being people of grace.  Itโ€™s not just to the faceless who we think have wrong us but to those in our church, in our home, in our neighborhood.  It is our constant striving for the one and only thing that makes life meaningful that will bring us eternal life โ€“ our joyful obedience to the God who loves us.

When we seek personal justice or vengeance let’s remember the Apostle Paul. Remember the evil that lived in him and the terrible acts he oversaw. Then look to your Bible and see not only God’s mercy but the mercy and forgiveness he was granted by his fellow Christian Jews and gentiles. There is always hope in God’s plan for someone (like us) to turn their meaningless, oppressive life into something oh so meaningful.

When I was researching Ecclesiastes 4, I was led to reflect on my experience with Tom. You remember him? The one who hated women.  The Holy Spirit convicted me.  I have long, quietly harbored ill-will toward him.  For making my life difficult during a stressful time.  For hating an entire โ€œtypeโ€ of people.  Suddenly I realized I was just as guilty.  I was not loving my enemy, my oppressor.  That realization brought me to tears of joy.  Knowing our good God is constantly working in our hearts to prune us in ways we didnโ€™t realize needed work.  That act, alone, made that day so meaningful.

Ask Him today to reveal any hidden sins, especially of hatred, envy, oppression, vengeance, and jealousy.  Then thank Him for the revelation and mercy.  Enjoy the moment where you have been set free once again.

The Unexpected Warrior

When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, โ€œHe is out of his mind.โ€ Matthew 3:21

During my senior year of high school, I decided to try and live out my dream of becoming an astronaut.  I met with an Air Force recruiter and was excited to take off on this new adventure.  And then I told my parents.  It was my father that said to me, โ€œYou are a lot like your mom and your mom couldnโ€™t handle the military. She dropped out after about a week.  You two donโ€™t like to be told what to do.  So, itโ€™d be best to drop this idea.โ€

From the outside I exuded confidence.  But on the inside, I was terrified about what people thought about me. I always obeyed my parents out of fear of the repercussions.  And so, I gave up my dream.  I assumed everything my father said was correct.

Imagine if Jesus had so little courage.

His own family thought him a little wacky.  I mean if you announced to your family that you were the Messiahโ€ฆ. But unlike me, He knew where His identity resided โ€“ in God.

So often when we think about courage and courageous people we think of military and political warriors.  And while we can be eternally grateful for people that go off to war to fight for our freedoms and people like Martin Luther King who make big waves in Washington DC, if we stop there we might be inclined to not step up to the plate when itโ€™s our turn.

Jesus wasnโ€™t a military warrior.  He didnโ€™t fight to change laws.  He didnโ€™t work hard to get elected to lead a nation.  But what He did do, from the first day He declared Himself the Messiah, was choose to lay aside any and all standing with man to serve God.  He knew from that day it would be soon to die on the cross.

โ€œHis was the courage of the mind, the heroism of the heart.  It was a sober and reasoned thing.  He deliberately counted the cost and paid it.โ€

Charles Jefferson, The Character of Jesus

In other words, He knew without a doubt who He served and who had His back. Every single decision He made, the words He spoke were for the glory of God.  He knew people would hate him.  He knew people would misunderstand Him.  And He knew He still needed to speak.

In my BSGs study on Revelation we recently looked at chapter 11 in which two witnesses are assigned by God to give some final admonishment to the people.  A final plea to turn to God.  Throughout their 3 years on earth the world attempts to destroy these witnesses through any means possible โ€“ they are true โ€œwarriors for God.โ€  And until God said it was time to go, they were protected.  We were asked that week who are powerful witnesses in our present generation?  Who would you name?

Although I donโ€™t know him personally, I do believe one such powerful witness is of the famed Duck Dynasty clan, Phil Robertson.  This rough looking, old man has been much maligned by our media and culture.  But to hear his salvation story can only show Godโ€™s grace, mercy and forgiveness.

You see, Mr. Robertson was a child of the 60s.  When he went off to college in 1964, he had a wife and child at home.  The message proliferated at college was of the โ€œsex, drugs and rock n rollโ€ variety.  No rules, no obligations.  He took to that message like a duck to water and was frequently drunk, doing drugs, and cheating on his wife.  When he graduated and got a job this lifestyle continued.  He also felt his family was holding him down.  And so, they left him one day.  For two weeks he partied until the cows came home.  Then he realized he was miserable.  He had not only lost his job as a teacher but also a bar he owned.

He begged his wife to take him back.  She would, if he cleaned up his act.  God softened his heart and Mr. Robertson sought out a Christian mentor.  With the strength of God behind him he pulled himself from his old life and began a one reborn.

โ€œAnd so, I devoted my waking hours to studying the Bible.  I pored over the onion-skin pages and began to mark them up.  I consumed the Word of God as if it were food and drank deeply from its waters of wisdom.โ€

Phil Robertson, The Theft of Americaโ€™s Soul

When I read this, what came to mind were the Navy SEALs that train not far from my house.  To be a SEAL, an elite member of the US military, you need to eat, sleep and devote every waking minute to training.  Their goal is to be the best soldier possible.  But what about us average Christians?  What is our goal?  Will we be like Phil Robertson and wholly commit ourselves to the cause of God?

Fast forward in Mr. Robinsonโ€™s life and we land in the middle of the show Duck Dynasty.  It was a reality show following around his family โ€“ a family of backwoods hunters and fishermen from Louisiana who own a duck call business.   During this show the family became warriors for God.  While their producers would almost demand they do or say things outside the morals of their faith, they would stand strong.  They were willing to lose all the money offered them.  They prayed and spoke of their faith throughout the show.  And they garnered millions of fans.  And enemies.  They were called backward, stupid, far-right crazy, mostly because of their commitment to their faith.

โ€œItโ€™s been 43 years since my encounter with God and I can tell you, Iโ€™m not running from anyone or anything; Iโ€™m not enslaved to the โ€˜ismsโ€™ of the world.โ€

Phil Robertson, The Theft of Americaโ€™s Soul

We can make excuses for why we wonโ€™t stand our ground and stand up for God โ€“ I might lose my job, I might lose my friends/family, I might be called any manner of names.  Doesnโ€™t that all come from a fear of man rather than a trust in God?  Phil Robertson wasnโ€™t famous and then got a TV show.  He was a man making duck calls who became famous for being funny, principled, a family leader, and God-fearing.

Many of us probably arenโ€™t ready to be a full time warrior for God.  We must practice the first two steps so they become a natural part of us.  When we can naturally say a prayer for those who would hurt us, when we anticipate and readily step forward to fill a need that Jesus places before us, only then are we certainly more prepared for this step.

I follow a Christian pastor on Instagram.  He has a series of YouTube talks where he delves into our cultureโ€™s most pressing topics.  After reading how he lovingly and with wisdom responds to some of the vitriol he receives I realized, Iโ€™m not quite ready yet for the bigger battlefield.  I need to chew and gnaw some more on Godโ€™s Word.  God has been testing me along the way with mini quizzes.  Small opportunities to stand for Him.  My training to be a Warrior for God continues.

Laying By The Pool

Then Jesus said to him, โ€œGet up! Pick up your mat and walk.โ€  At once, the man was cured. John 5:8

โ€œLord Jesus, I offer myself for Your people.  In any way.  Any place.  Any time.โ€

Corrie Ten Boom, The Hiding Place

I was reading recently about what it meant that Jesus called Himself a humble servant of God.  To some that seems contrary โ€“ for someone to call themselves โ€œhumble.โ€  And at the time of Jesus the word โ€œhumbleโ€ was a vile and contemptible thing.  According to Christian author Charles Jefferson, there was no virtue in the all the pagan world known as “humility.”  It was a defect.

As Christianity spread across the world so did its values.  One of its unique additions to the world was the concept of Christ-like humility and servitude.   It is possibly one of the most misunderstood of Christian values.  To some, it means having a low estimate of ourselves.  To others it means we deny ourselves and make ourselves inferior.  But if we accept all of Christโ€™s words as true we then must also accept these:

โ€œI am meek and lowly in heart.โ€  Matthew 11:29

And yet we have never met a person who held their head higher, with more confidence, with such loftiness, as Jesus.  So often it seems we create a vision of the various character traits of Jesus and each believer then feels they must change their personalities to fit that ideal.  When we picture a meek and humble person (not Jesus) do we imagine a rich person?  Do we picture a courageous and bold person?  Or do we picture a small, weak person who lets people walk all over her?

As Iโ€™ve progressed in my faith this concept of being a humble servant is something Iโ€™ve really mulled over.  Iโ€™ve tried โ€œplayingโ€ various roles that seem to fit the ideal.  And itโ€™s funny.  When I try to be so quiet and meek-like it usually backfires.  The recipient can tell Iโ€™m being a phony.

About a year ago I heard about the book, โ€œThe Hiding Place.โ€  I know many Christians have read this at some point in their lives.  As a refresher, the story is a Christian family from Holland living at the start of World War II.  As Hitlerโ€™s army advances, the local Jewish community starts to disappear.  Two of the main characters, sisters Betsie and Corrie Ten Boom, find themselves answering Godโ€™s call to not just hide Jews but also play integral roles in the underground system of protecting Jews from all over.  What struck me about this book were the opposite personalities of the sisters.  Both answering Godโ€™s call to be humble servants in their own ways.

Corrie was the bold one.  She found herself tasked with much of the dangerous work outside their home.  While in prison it was Corrie who dealt with the officials.  Lest we think this was easy for her because of a strong faith, Corrie frequently questioned God about what He wanted her to do.  And each time she prayed.  And each time either a word from God or someone close to her encouraged her to move on His command.  Near the beginning of their story, Corrie is tasked with obtaining extra food rations cards.  She was led to speak with a local man who recently took a job in the Food Office.  But she wasnโ€™t sure it would be safe.

โ€œLord,โ€ I prayed silently, โ€œif it is not safe to confide in Fred, stop this conversation now before it is too late.โ€

Corrie Ten Boom, The Hiding Place

She found herself asking not for five cards but suddenly 100.    And within a week they were in her hands.  The danger she faced โ€“ being turned into the authorities– was replaced with her trust in Godโ€™s urging for her to be a โ€œdoing Christian.โ€

Throughout her ordeal, while at home and eventually in prison, she wanted to be so angry with the Germans and those who supported them.  She balked at loving her enemies and showing them mercy.  Really, who could blame her?  And yet over and over she submitted her heart and hands to God.

โ€œMy job was simply to follow His leading one step at a time, holding every decision up to Him in prayer,โ€ she wrote.  โ€œI knew I was not clever or subtle or sophisticated; if my home was becoming a meeting place for need and supply, it was through some strategy far higher than mine.โ€

Corrie Ten Boom, The Hiding Place

You can contrast her submission to God with a local pastor she encounters.  He, on the other hand, when asked to take in a Jewish mother and child into his home was clearly frightened.  He admonished her for the โ€œillegalโ€ activity and warned her that what she was doing wasnโ€™t safe.

The concept of being a humble servant doesnโ€™t require of us to be a person of a certain personality or style of living.  A longtime pastor can fail while a wealthy man can succeed at this effort.  Throughout “The Hiding Place” one such wealthy man aids the underground effort with both his money and his own hands.

In all of Jesusโ€™ teachings we see Him asking us to do two things: love one another and take action.  Like the man at the pool who had been waiting for healing for almost 40 years he asks us to first believe Him then get up and start moving.  Along the way he wants us to be teachable and willing to learn.  He asks us to put aside our vanity and social aspirations.  He tasks us to serve and feed His sheep.  He doesnโ€™t ask us to underestimate ourselves, make ourselves small, or feel unworthy.  In fact, He wants us to stand firm in the knowledge we are doing His work.

Corrie Ten Boom was bold and faithful and humble at the same time. She was always looking to serve the less fortunate and those in need.  And when she forgot about serving her enemies, her sister stepped forward to remind her.

I once took a leadership personality test at a conference.  The results werenโ€™t that surprising.  I have a bold personality and Iโ€™m good at organizing.  But what makes any leadership situation successful for me is to be paired with a softer, gentler leader.  That person remembers those who arenโ€™t as obvious and reminds me to slow down to see the whole picture.

Betsie Ten Boom was that kind of leader.  The book in which they are written of highlights her bold sister, Corrie.  But itโ€™s this quieter, gentler servant of God that I saw as a thread throughout.  It was Betsie who would send up prayers for the Germans soldiers who were torturing them.  It was Betsy who thanked God for fleas in their new barracks.  While Corrie was dealing with the big problems, it was her quiet sister drawing people out of the shadows for prayer meetings in the middle of the night.

During one difficult transfer to yet another barracks, the women were made to stand for hours and hours.  The two sisterโ€™s personalities and approach to being Godโ€™s servants was evident in this exchange:

โ€œBetsie!โ€ I wailed, โ€œhow long will this take!โ€

โ€œPerhaps a long, long time.  Perhaps many years.  But what better way could there be to spend our lives?โ€ Betsie replied.

I turned to stare at her.  โ€œWhatever are you talking about?โ€

โ€œThese young women.  That young girl back at the bunkers, Corrie, if people can be taught to hate, they can be taught to love!  We must find a way, you and I, no matter how long it takesโ€ฆโ€ Betsie said with excitement.

Are we that excited to serve God humbly? To be teachable, free from ambition, and vanity?  Have we looked Jesus in the eye and said, โ€œI trust you.โ€  And when He has told you to get up and pick up your mat have you obeyed Him?  Or have you decided that you arenโ€™t โ€œgood enough,โ€ โ€œstrong enough,โ€ or โ€œsmart enough?โ€

Are you laying around by the pool, waiting for someone else to do the work for you? If you keep saying to God, โ€œshow me what you want me to doโ€ and have yet to walk out your front door and serve your neighbors youโ€™ve missed the point.  He takes all types in His Great Army.  Get your mat and get moving.

โ€œAll of us are different, but all of us can serve the Lord for His glory.โ€

Wheat or Chaff

Before I sat down to write this final word on the Book of James, I re-read through the five chapters and my highlighted notes.ย ย What struck me was how perfectly Jamesโ€™ words speak to the state of our current world.ย ย In February 2020, as news of the Covid19 virus started coming in from around the world we didnโ€™t think too much about it.ย ย Another type of flu, meh.ย ย And suddenly March was upon us.ย ย Our lives were shutdown.ย ย Justified or not, our businesses closed, so many allowed fear to grip them into locking themselves in their homes, we ran out of toilet paper, our churches stopped welcoming us into their doors, and we watched rioters burn down cities.ย ย Some of us turned away from God and others of us ran toward Him.

I told my husband the other day how amazingly well spoken the disciples were.ย ย I think the tendency to think back to โ€œancient timesโ€ may lead us to think they werenโ€™t as smart as us because we value โ€œknowledgeโ€ over โ€œwisdom.โ€ย ย In this short five-chapter letter, Jamesโ€™ gifts shine through.ย ย He is eloquent when using the metaphors of ships and rudders and forest fires and small sparks when speaking of our waggling and dangerous tongues.ย ย He turns into a great debater when providing facts about not showing favoritism and how the famed among us are typically the ones who take advantage of us.ย ย He is a fiery preacher when scolding us to submit and resist the devil.ย ย And a faithful servant reminding us to reach out to God for any and all needs.

I read an introduction to a Bible study on James once that said, โ€œUnlike most books of the New Testament, the letter of James is best known for the people who donโ€™t like it. People like love.ย ย They like Christ.ย ย They donโ€™t like James.โ€ย ย But isnโ€™t that the very reason this letter needed to be written?ย ย Before we are thrown into a crisis like the year 2020, before we face off with the devil, before we walk out the door to deal with unhappy, non-believers, James wants to shake us awake.ย ย To give us the tools to stand firm in the face of adversity.ย ย To be Godโ€™s faithful lights for the world.ย ย When I read James, I think of this letter as one for us everyday people.ย ย Itโ€™s a workshop full of concrete โ€œhow toโ€™s.โ€ย ย Thereโ€™s nothing wishy washy or confusing about James.

James is a “how to” book for us all

In the midst of the trials of the last few months, how many of us have considered it โ€œpure joy?โ€  (James 1:2) When out for our evening walk the other day, I told my husband how much I have appreciated what has happened.  It forced me to slow down and stop fretting over filling up my daily schedule.  My house got really clean.  We turned to each other for loving support more than ever.  We became a team and God was our head coach.  Iโ€™ve been blessed to spend more time with a particular friend than I wouldnโ€™t normally as she goes through a divorce.  My BSGs (Bible study girls) started meeting in January.  Two of whom I only slightly knew.  We are now prayer warriors for each other.  I asked my husband what positive things have come out of this for him โ€“ in the face of a very difficult work situation.  He said heโ€™s realized who he can really rely on.

Iโ€™ve learned how to be humble.ย ย Iโ€™ve learned to listen to people who have fears that I donโ€™t have and show them grace.ย ย That person driving alone in their car with a full double breather mask pushes me to pray for them to find peace rather than make fun of them.ย ย Because that is what the Word tells us (James 1:23).

The destruction caused by favoritism, hating our neighbor, people lacking in mercy and those living in greed fills our daily news.  People wanting to burn small businesses because they feel their needs are greater. Rioters standing with bullhorns yelling all night into homes because their view of the world comes first.  Employees and businesses โ€œgaming the systemโ€ to get more of the money distributed to help those struggling makes me want to cry. And, I can still picture a couple at Home Depot filling their pick-up truck to its fullest with toilet paper and laughing about it.  (James 2:8, 13, 3:16, 4:17, 5:2).

And if we looked hard enough, we saw churches helping their communities by doing food drives and people volunteering to help at Food Banks.ย ย We saw neighbors supporting each other.ย ย We saw churches fighting to stay open and serve their flocks.ย ย I saw people like Christian worship leader Sean Feucht gathering people by the 100s to pray and worship God outside โ€“ at parks, at beaches, on the streets. I saw friends get on their knees and fully surrender to God. (James 2:8, 14,4:7, 5:19)

In the United States, we are going through an important presidential election.ย ย Iโ€™ve stood at street corners supporting a candidate while the opposing side hurls hatred and curse words at me.ย ย All the while they hold signs telling me to have more compassion and to love certain races.ย ย (James 3:9).ย ย Iโ€™ve watched candidate debates where the lies are piled up not only by the candidate but by the debate moderator and then by the media.ย ย All in order to disguise the true platform of the candidate.ย ย Their yes has not meant yes and their no has not meant no. (James 5:12)

Iโ€™ve said to others that this time seems unprecedent.ย ย And this letter of James seems very prescient.ย ย There is a sifting going on.ย ย Have we chosen to surrender and submit to God?ย ย (James 4:7). Have we thrown up all our worries, our hurts, our sins to God or are we taking them out on others?ย ย (James 5:13-16) Are we working to build up our brothers and sisters in Christ or are we fighting with them?ย ย (James 5:19)

Will we finally surrender it all to God?

James makes it clear, without a lot of flowery prose, as to the destruction we humans can wrought without our eyes firmly on God.ย ย The question is, will we listen and do or will we deceive ourselves?

Thank you for joining me on this journey through James.ย ย I look forward to you joining me with my next series called, โ€œLiving Amazed through Jesusโ€ beginning November 1.ย

Patience, Grasshopper

Iโ€™ve told my friends that looking back over my life so far, I really have only one regret.ย ย Itโ€™s that I wish I had a closer relationship with Jesus when I was the parent of young kids.ย ย My husband and I attended church fairly regularly.ย ย But I was wrapped up in childrearing worries and stresses and didnโ€™t know how to turn all that over to God.ย ย ย I couldโ€™ve enjoyed many more hours of sleep had I not been such a โ€œwoulda, coulda, shouldaโ€ person.ย ย I found myself, during a very long season of self-doubt about my parenting skills, constantly praying for patience.ย ย Literally praying every single night for about two years for patience.ย ย You see, I was so afraid of turning into my mother โ€“ screaming at my kids and losing control โ€“ that I thought patience was the answer.ย ย One Sunday, our pastorโ€™s sermon was about praying.ย ย He said, โ€œIf you keep praying about the same problem over and over and over maybe itโ€™s time to start praying for something different.โ€ย ย ย He had a knack for speaking on issues near and dear to me.ย ย ย So that night I stopped praying for patience and instead prayed for ways to help me deal with difficult situations.

As Iโ€™ve grown closer to Jesus, He has taught me a lot of lessons.  Heโ€™s still teaching me.  And step-by-step He has moved me closer to my original plea for patience.  You see, I wasnโ€™t ready to learn the hard stuff yet.  He just wanted me to start turning to Him when I was in need, when I was broken.  Patience may be a virtue but it is a heck of a hard thing to have and use regularly.

You, too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lordโ€™s coming is near.โ€

James 5:8

I first needed to learn what standing firm, standing safely in Godโ€™s arms even meant.ย ย I didnโ€™t have the wisdom needed to grasp the joy in hearing that the Lord is coming near.ย ย I heard on a Joyce Meyerโ€™s podcast this morning that God gives us a lot of leeway and grace when we first become Christians.ย ย But once we hear the Word and gain His wisdom, expectations change.ย ย We are expected to act as His children, not as children of this world.ย ย Think about that.ย ย Every time we attend church, do a Bible study, listen to a Christian podcast, see a Christian post on social media we are hearing His Word.ย ย We are learning the nature and expectations of God.ย ย And He expects us to live as He prescribes.

A personโ€™s wisdom yields patience; it is the oneโ€™s glory to overlook offense.

Proverbs 19:11

Wisdom that we glean from God yields patience.ย ย And when we are patient, that glorifies what we have learned from God.ย ย We cannot be steeped in the nature of God without also knowing and acting in patience.ย ย Why?ย Because patience means love.ย ย It means grace.ย ย It means forgiveness.ย ย Thank God He is patient with us.ย ย I never feel God rushes me to learn a lesson.ย ย In fact, my lesson in patience has taken about 26 years.

I looked up on-line โ€œhow to be patient.โ€  I came across a website that focuses on self -improvement.  Hereโ€™s their reasons why we should learn patience.

  1. We make better decisions by assessing situations rather than going in emotional and blind.
  2. We have less stress by understanding some things take longer than others.
  3. Our relationships are improved because we are more flexible and understanding.

Doesnโ€™t that all sound like something God would want from us?  Being wise, giving our stress up to God, and loving and being grace-filled toward others.

They then described a 6-step process for learning patience:

  1. Understand and counteract triggers
  2. Increase your self-confidence
  3. Put on your โ€œpositive glassesโ€
  4. Change your attitude โ€“ โ€œwhy are you in such a hurry?โ€
  5. Visualize worst case scenarios
  6. Release tension and stress through eating right, exercise, enjoying activities

Now imaging trying to do all that without God.ย ย Hereโ€™s my Christian re-do of these six steps:

  • Pray for God to reveal the areas where you struggle with patience (sometimes we pretend we arenโ€™t being impatient and justify our actions)ย

John 16:24, โ€œUntil now you have not asked for anything in my name.  Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.โ€

  • Recognize that God loves you.ย ย Accept He wants the very best for you.ย ย

John 16:27, โ€œNo, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.โ€

  • Remember that joy can be found in trials.ย ย And most of all that God has delivered for you in the past.ย ย He is faithful.ย

2 Thes 3:3, โ€œBut the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.โ€

  • Rejoice each and every day, if not every hour, for all the great things in your life.ย ย

Prov 17:22, โ€œA cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.โ€

  • To be honest, visualizing worst case scenarios has been helpful to me.ย ย If Iโ€™m waiting in a long line at Costco and start getting impatient I think, โ€œWell, what have I got to be impatient for anyways?โ€ or โ€œWell, if Iโ€™m late because of this line I can call ahead and let them know.โ€ย ย

Matt 6:27, โ€œCan anyone of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?โ€

  • Yes, eat right, exercise, enjoy new and old activities.ย ย And pray.ย ย And pray.ย ย And pray.ย ย Give up all those thoughts, those worries, those fears, those negative emotions to God.ย ย Cry out to Jesus and ask Him to remove whatever negative thought you have right then.ย

1 Samuel 2:1, โ€œMy heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high.  My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance.โ€

When we get closer to God โ€“ become fluent in His character โ€“ that is when He can work His ways in us.  And God is always patient with us.  My friend and I were having lunch today and she said she is starting to have more moments in her difficult life where she looks up and gives a little smile โ€“ recognizing those growth moments God has put in front of her.  As for me, I described for her my process of writing and how I study the topic, pray, and then start writing.  I rarely stop writing one of these posts until I am done.  The words just come out of me onto the computer.  My whole body is focused on getting these words down.  I told her how weird it was that I was interrupted multiple times while writing this post.  And as I drove home from lunch, I was listening to a praise song and it hit me.  Patience.  The topic of this post.  And I had just been tested.  I was not annoyed about the interruptions.  I felt blessed hearing from a few friends.  And normally I wouldโ€™ve been distracted during lunch, thinking about what else I needed to write.  I wouldโ€™ve failed my friend who I need to support during this time in her life.

I called my friend from my car and said, โ€œI just got it!ย ย Patience!ย ย I was tested!โ€ย ย And she said, โ€œI realized that while you were telling me.ย ย And Iโ€™m glad it finally came to you.โ€ย ย Maybe this whole actually studying Godโ€™s Word really does work.ย ย Time to look up and smile.

Makes Sense

Arguing amongst us Christians seems to be at an all time high.  I bet the devil is dancing a little jig.  We canโ€™t seem to agree on churches being open, wearing masks, gathering together, black lives mattering, funding or defunding the police, whether the president is a racist or not, and on and on and on.  We boast of our breadth of knowledge about some topic near and dear to our emotions all the while pressing our perceived enemyโ€™s face down into the dirt.

We forget the most important admonishment from Jesus: To love others.

If we start there, we set ourselves off on the right path toward speaking Godโ€™s wisdom rather than โ€œearthly, unspiritual, demonic, wisdom” (James 3:15). But when we decide that something just โ€œmakes senseโ€ to us without using the touchstone of Godโ€™s Words, oh the rabbit holes we can find ourselves deep within.

โ€œWho is wise and understanding among you?  Let them show it by their good life by deeds done in humility that comes from wisdom.  But if you harbor bitter envy, and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.โ€

James 3:13-14

I used to follow a well-known female pastor.ย ย Iโ€™ve read her books and listened to her sermons.ย ย And then an election season came.ย ย She was vehement about supporting a certain candidate.ย ย She was distraught when he lost.ย ย ย It was based on her hatred for the current occupant of that seat.ย ย What made โ€œsenseโ€ to her was that the current, very conservative senator was against illegal immigration and therefore a racist โ€“ her logic, not mine.ย ย However, the candidate she supported was pro-abortion (not just pro-choice), pro-illegal immigration, anti-school choice, pro-legalizing drug use, removing equal voting representation by eliminating the electoral college, and so much more.ย ย Just the abortion stance alone had me scratching my head.ย ย But a lot of her followers, or fans, went along with her.ย Just as a lot of Christians canโ€™t seem to agree on abortion, I suppose.ย ย When it came down to it, I sought out Godly wisdom to decide whether my thoughts on the situation were in line with Jesus.

What I was led to was not to berate her on social media, not to burn her books, not to ask God to send her into hell.  It was to pray for His wisdom and mercy to drop like a blanket over the situation.  And with that, I went my own way in peace.

When we make decisions based on what the Bible calls the โ€œfleshโ€ โ€“ things that work โ€œbestโ€ for us, what makes us feel good, what gets us what we think we want, or what we feel protects us โ€“ we are almost guaranteed to go off the rails.  Hereโ€™s a few contrasts Iโ€™ve found when it comes to Earthly Wisdom vs Godly Wisdom

Earthly                                                Godly
Getting evenBeing generous in love and forgiveness
Saving and hoardingHelping those in need
Protecting โ€œour timeโ€ Generous with our gifts and talents
Avoiding our enemiesReaching out to build bridges of peace
Being enviousGaining peacefulness and thankfulness
Gossiping or beratingBuilding others up
Being deceitful Seeking meekness and purity
Flip flopping our decisionsBeing decisive in Godโ€™s righteousness
Withholding loveGiving mercy
Comply with the worldโ€™s view Being sincere in who God made us to be

Just because we call ourselves โ€œChristiansโ€ doesnโ€™t mean we can sit back and proclaim all our thoughts and actions good.  Even our faith leaders are tested and must continually seek out His Word to ensure we walk on the right path.

โ€œTurn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.โ€

PS 34:14

Pursue it.  It doesnโ€™t say โ€œonce youโ€™ve sought peace itโ€™s all over, wash your hands, put your feet up and youโ€™re done.โ€  Thatโ€™s because the devil, that wily adversary, just loves when we let our armor down.  Especially when we think weโ€™ve reached the pinnacle of being a โ€œgood Christian.โ€  Every single day we are faced with decisions big and small.  When we wake up, we decide what kind of day we will have โ€“ one living with or without the Holy Spirit.  When we get stuck in traffic, encounter an unhappy person, when we see a homeless person, when we get asked to volunteer, we get another text from that relative who has differing political views, when we decide what to watch on tv, and what we say (or donโ€™t say) we are thankful for at the end of the day.

I recently had a back and forth with a commenter who posted on a Christian site something about the organization Black Lives Matter.ย ย The commenter stated that the Bible supports the idea touted by the organization Black Lives Matter of destroying the nuclear family and raising our children commune-style.ย ย Iโ€™m sure that makes them feel good.ย ย It sounds lovely.ย ย Everyone raising everyone elseโ€™s kids and not one person needing to be wholly responsible.ย ย When I said I didn’t know where that was in the Bible, she said, “Well, I read the Bible differently than you.” Go figure. So often we find ourselves supporting ideas that sound good, sound loving, sound just, when itโ€™s really based on earthly wisdom, not Godly.ย ย When we decide earthly wisdom is correct over Godโ€™s weโ€™ve decided to remove Him from the throne.ย ย Weโ€™ve said we know better than the King of Kings.ย ย

For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. PS 95:3

Itโ€™s time to place our earthly wisdom right up against the measuring stick of Godโ€™s Word.  Each time we feel โ€œrighteousโ€ or โ€œvirtuousโ€ we need a gut check to be sure it makes sense in Godโ€™s realm, not manโ€™s.

What areas in your life have you defended which need to be held up against God’s Wisdom Measuring Stick?

Though My Feet May Stumble

About 10 years ago my husband and I were asked to lead a church Bible study.ย ย As these things go it wasnโ€™t because we were so knowledgeable, it was because we were warm bodies.ย ย They said we werenโ€™t to be teachers of the study, just facilitators.ย ย They always say that.ย ย But you and I both know a good Bible study group has a leader that can dig deeper, draw people out into discussions, and glean insight in topics.ย ย True to my character, I jumped in with both feet attempting to educate myself better on each topic that arose.ย ย I found the key, however, when in these situations was to 1) identify the people in the group who were more knowledgeable and 2) know when to say โ€œI have no idea.โ€ย ย Fast forward to today.ย ย Even right now, as I write this, I fear saying the wrong thing because I realize Iโ€™m no โ€œesteemed theologian.โ€ย ย But I do know I have the mind of Christ (2Cor 2:16).

As usual for my morning routine I got up that morning the first of July, did a couple devotionals, and took my dog for a walk.ย ย We were about four months into the Covid lockdown. I was leading a small Bible study with friends, and in the midst of a Boldness Challenge in which I had invited about 20 people to participate.ย ย The challenge was coming to an end in a few weeks.ย ย As I listened to my Christian music on my walk and doing some silent praying, I heard Him speak.ย ย โ€œGo home right now and start a blog.โ€ย ย Seriously.ย ย Starting a blog hadnโ€™t been on my radar.ย ย I enjoyed just conversing with folks in my small sphere.ย ย But, feeling challenged by God, I walked in the door, sat down at my computer and typed, โ€œbest platforms to start a blog.โ€ย ย Within the hour I had created Emboldened.ย ย I invited all my Bold Challenge buddies and a few more to follow the blog.ย ย I started praying to the Almighty about what He wanted me to say.ย ย In these situations, I typically find myself praying, โ€œWhelp, this was your idea.ย ย Now what?โ€

When I hit 200 visitors from about 10 different countries, I had a revelation.ย ย โ€œOh crud. I have just opened myself up to judgement on a whole new scale.โ€ย ย ย I told my Bible study girls that while it was cool it was also terrifying.ย ย ย ย Cool because Iโ€™m using a number of my God-given gifts to reach people around the world.ย ย Terrifying because I might slip up in my theology and harsh words will rain down.ย

โ€œNot many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.โ€

James 3:1

I wonder if thatโ€™s why so many of us are fearful about speaking up when talking about our faith?ย ย Maybe we will be questioned and wonโ€™t know the answer.ย ย Or worse yet, we might get something wrong and be harshly judged?ย ย But God.ย ย Thatโ€™s what a fellow blogger wrote in one of my comments last week.ย ย But God.ย ย That statement works so well in so many situations.ย ย We were talking about Godโ€™s mercy.ย ย But if I truly trust God and the direction He has set in front of me, He will guide my words to be His Words.ย ย He will take my failings and trials and make them good.ย ย I donโ€™t believe James is discouraging us to be teachers.ย ย Heโ€™s letting us know we need to be prepared to speak the truth of Godโ€™s Word and in doing so we will face opposition, sometimes very cruel opposition.

โ€œWe all stumble in many ways.ย ย Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.โ€

James 3:2

Thereโ€™s only one person that was perfect โ€“ Jesus.ย ย I find comfort in knowing that every single person from C.S Lewis to Charles Spurgeon and Peter to Paul and Joyce Meyer to Rick Warren stumble.ย ย We all stumble.ย ย But think of stumbling this way โ€“ it is a result of walking forward and not watching where we are going.ย ย James 3 is about stumbling and refocusing our eyes on God.ย ย When we donโ€™t watch our tongue, when we envy others we stumble.ย ย But when we re-focus on God we find ourselves making peace with the most unlikely people and submitting ourselves fully.

Iโ€™m glad you are on this journey with me.ย ย When I stumble help me up and I will help you too.ย ย No judgement, just a loving hand.

Army of Love

I look at the current news and wonder what part we Christians have played in allowing the destruction and violence that has permeated our society. Thereโ€™s the climate change activists who burn down car dealerships. Antifa groups who want to destroy basic societal norms. Abortion rights, LGBTQ, and BLM protestors who scream in other peopleโ€™s faces. And on and on. The amount of hate that exudes from our tvs and cell phones is almost unbearable. But how do Christians play a part in any of this?

James reminds us of Jesusโ€™ second most important commandment He gave to the disciples before His death.

Love your neighbor as yourself, and you are doing right

James 2:8

You notice it doesnโ€™t say that whatever your neighbor does is ok and we should agree that it is good and right? And yet so many of us think we either need to agree or deny the truths of our faith in order to love our neighbors. Our fear of man, rather than God can lead us to stand on the wrong side of the room. Just as Peter did when the disciples all were called back to Jerusalem to discuss the issue of circumcision and whether Gentiles must first become Jews before accepting Christ. After having lived as a Gentile and bringing Gentiles to Christ without the requirement of circumcision, Peter took one look at the disapproving traditional Jews at the meeting and caved. He separated himself from the Gentiles. Paul had to admonish him for his hypocrisy.

When I saw that they (Peter and Barnabas) were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said, to Cephas (Peter) in front of them all, “You are a Jew yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it then that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

Galatians 2:14

Peter is many of us. We fear discord. We fear disagreement. We fear being judged. And at the time of Jesus’ crucifixion Peter feared physical harm. So instead of standing firm knowing God is by our side when interacting with our neighbors, loved ones or strangers, we sometimes, if not frequently, cave.

It’s almost as though our church leaders have failed to teach us one of the most important lessons that Jesus lived out — how to sit and dine with sinners while remaining faithful to God.  In a recent Bible study session, we asked the question, โ€œWhat does it mean to allow Christ to live through you and is there anything specific that you should be doing?โ€  One person said we should guard our hearts and avoid situations where there is temptation to sin.  I had to laugh and say that would mean I would never go to the grocery store.  They knew what I meant โ€“ I struggle with being annoyed by all manner of behavior by other people.  If I could just not be around other people I donโ€™t think I would sin at all!  Iโ€™ve come to realize that God puts these tests in front of me each day, waiting for me to finally โ€œget itโ€ โ€“ love my neighbors, show grace and give mercy.  And yes, even when I disagree with them.

Jesus himself sat among the sinners as the Ambassador to Heaven.  Instead of the dread of facing people who disagreed with him he seemed to enter those situations with hopeful anticipation.  So, when my Bible study group discussed the idea of avoiding people or places that give us open avenues to sin we looked at each and pointed out the areas we individually would need to always avoid.  In other words, raise the white flag and retreat from the full life for which we are called.  But we are called to be Ambassadors for Christ (2 Cor 5:20.)

How does this relate to strife in our society? As Christians, so many of us have flown the white flag high in hopes we wonโ€™t be hated. In hopes we wouldnโ€™t have to face disagreement. We accept the sin of โ€œalmost rightโ€ laws and the non-Christian definition of what loving our neighbors mean. Loving and accepting others is not the same as agreeing and going along with them. Satan is always looking for ways to drip like water on a stone onto our commitment to the Almighty God. Phrases such as โ€œLove is Love,โ€ โ€œAll Science is Real,โ€ and โ€œWomenโ€™s Rights are Human Rights,โ€ hide the true meaning behind each. We get lost in arguments about โ€œwhy shouldnโ€™t everyone be allowed to marry whom they wantโ€ or โ€œwell, if you donโ€™t adopt a baby yourself then you shouldnโ€™t decide about abortion.โ€ So, we vote for laws that go directly against our core Christian beliefs. We agree that there shouldnโ€™t be time for prayer in school, much less allow a student to read the Bible as their reading assignment. We agree that marriage doesnโ€™t need a man and a woman and children can do without a parent. And we watch our moral society slowly chip away. We miss opportunities to share Godโ€™s messages of love, grace and forgiveness by being afraid of the disagreement. But Jesusโ€™ behavior throughout His time on Earth was not one of retreat or agreement with sinners.

Pro-abortionist don’t realize every child is wanted and loved by God

Itโ€™s interesting to realize that Jesus didnโ€™t preach to โ€œfellowโ€ Christians.  They didnโ€™t exist.  He preached to people who didnโ€™t know what being saved by grace meant.  He preached to people who may have been living as Jews but in name only.  He preached to High Priests who broke Mosaic Law on a regular basis.  He spoke to us — sinners. And when He commissioned the disciples, He sent them knowing full well the people they encountered may not even believe in a monotheistic God.  So, the argument made that we, as Christians, shouldnโ€™t โ€œimposeโ€ our ways on non-Christians falls flat.  If what we believe and the life we are called to live out is so amazing, so marvelous, then why wouldnโ€™t we want to see everyone live in that same grace? God didn’t give us the gift of justification to hoard it. He gave it to share with the rest of His people.

I recently found an article by a pastor who was raised by two lesbian women.  He defines them as activists in the LGBTQ community.  He came to Christ one night when he attended a Christian meeting, fully loaded to disagree and fight against everything being preached.  Instead he walked away saved.

โ€œI lived in the tension of accepting my parents that I dearly loved, but not theologically agreeing with their choice to be in same-sex relationships.โ€

Caleb Kaltenbach, Pastor, City on A Hill Church

He calls this โ€œliving in the tensionโ€ when we find ourselves in disagreement with our non-Christian neighbors and loved ones.  His family kicked him out for a short while.  But his work as a Christian brought them back into a loving relationship.  One that requires work to maintain.  He goes on to say,

โ€œDonโ€™t settle for cheap love based merely on agreement. Pursue priceless love that accepts the person (no matter who or where they are) with the understanding that while you canโ€™t โ€œfixโ€ themโ€” God can.โ€

He acknowledges this is a two-way street for a successful relationship.ย ย But when the other party doesnโ€™t do their part it doesnโ€™t give us license to then act non-Christian.ย ย We are always called to love and accept people for who they are at that moment.ย ย Love of others that is based on acceptance instead of agreement can reunite relationships, heal families, save lives, and even change eternal destinations.ย ย And thatโ€™s the message we so infrequently hear at church.ย ย Thereโ€™s a fear of discussing the big issues facing us as we live in the new Babylon.ย ย But we need to practice and be reminded how to show love and while “living in the tension.”ย ย And remembering our job as Ambassadors is to ACT like Christians, as defined by Jesus, not Pharisees.

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Ephesians 4:31

The next time you hear condemnation coming from a group or a person of which you disagree with their morals and values stop for a moment and pray.ย ย Listen to Godโ€™s voice.ย ย Rest in the fact that as Christians we donโ€™t need to fear man.ย ย Jesus saw everyone as a potential person to bring to eternal life and so should we.ย ย And the life God wants for all His people is good.ย ย Itโ€™s time to stop retreating, stop waving the white flag.ย ย Itโ€™s time to step up in confidence with the love from God leading the way.ย ย Our neighbors, our communities, our children, need us to spread His message.ย ย We are his soldiers in His Army of Love.ย

Is there someone that lives a life against Christian morals that you need to give up to God?  Let Him solve that problem.  Your job is to just love them.
