His Amazing Word

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1

This week, on one of the Instagram accounts I follow, the site owner posed the question: What good thing happened to you this year?  She added, โ€œLetโ€™s spread some gratitude vibes.โ€  My answer? That my faith has gotten so much more in-depth and stronger.  Amazing, given whatโ€™s all happened in 2020.   I no longer have a home church.  In fact, I havenโ€™t been to church since the last weekend of February.  When I questioned my church closing indefinitely, I was met with some pretty nasty responses.  And when I asked to be removed from the rolls I received an email from the assistant pastor with a polite version of โ€œdonโ€™t let the door hit you on the way out.โ€

So, itโ€™s pretty amazing that without a body of faithful Christians to help in my growth that I am where I am today.ย ย

When I looked over this weekโ€™s post by Madison and myself, I realized that my growth was reflected in the lessons.  The acceptance of Godโ€™s amazing interruptions โ€“ knowing He works all things for my good.  The acknowledgement of His amazing authority over all situations โ€“ yes, even the ones that donโ€™t seem to make any sense.  The proof that He loves me by reading the Book of John.  And how much my picture of Jesus has changed these last few months โ€“ from a historical figure to a spirit that lives inside me.

My devotional this week had a day titled, โ€œWhat to do when trouble comes.โ€  Itโ€™s based on 1 Timothy 6:17 which states, โ€œFight the good fight of the faith.โ€  It went on to say that trouble is a part of life, so we simply have to be ready for it. (Joyce Meyer, New Day, New You).  A friend told me the other day she wishes she could just fast forward to 2022.  My response? โ€œWhy? There might be a nuclear fallout that year.  So, you might as well find joy in today.โ€

How do we, as Christians, get prepared?ย ย How do we build up our amazing faith muscle for that day when trouble comes, because it most certainly will?ย ย And looking at this weekโ€™s blog posts the answer is clear โ€“ steeping ourselves in Godโ€™s Holy Word.ย ย

I find myself extremely blessed to have started a small Bible study group โ€“ theyโ€™re my BSGs (Bible study girls) โ€“ back in January.ย ย I was encouraged by one of the members to re-start a study group.ย ย On an urging by the Holy Spirit, I invited two other women from my gym. They eagerly said yes.ย ย So, the four of us embarked on a journey we had no idea would be an anchor for us this year.ย ย We started out with easy faith muscles and moved up to weightier topics.ย ย These three women became my church.ย ย My amazing sisters in Christ.ย ย It wasnโ€™t just about having women that wanted to get together.ย ย Weโ€™ve put in the work.ย ย Weโ€™ve been diligent in our faith workouts.ย ย Weโ€™ve dug deep not only into His Word but into our own sins.

Iโ€™ve led other Bible studies before.ย ย Thereโ€™s always a few that blow off doing the homework and not take it seriously.ย ย Then thereโ€™s others that arenโ€™t willing to take the opportunity to open themselves up for conviction.ย ย If we truly want to know Godโ€™s character, not ours, and Godโ€™s will, not ours, we need to use His Divine Word as our touchstone.ย ย The world longs to cheat us out of the true, amazing, love God has for us.ย ย The world plays a shell game with morality.ย ย If we want to grab on to the more than 5,000 promises God makes in the Bible then we need to treat it seriously.

Did you need to re-read that last sentence? More than 5,000 promises.ย ย How many of them do you know?ย ย How many of them have you taken to heart?ย ย Those amazing promises are sitting right there in that book.ย ย

Jesus asked, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

Matthew 9:28

Letโ€™s be a church together and dive deep into those promises.ย ย Letโ€™s be a church together that accepts His interruptions with joy and peace.ย ย Letโ€™s be a church together that places His authority over everything in our lives.ย ย Letโ€™s be a church that needs no other proof of His love for us than our own existence.ย ย Letโ€™s be a church together that sees Jesus for who He is โ€“ our Lord and Savior who loves us and wants for us to live apart from what the world throws at us.ย ย Today we can open up His Word and find joy right there on its pages.

His Amazing Identity

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

Every year Jesusโ€™ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.ย When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.ย ย After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.ย When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.ย After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.ย Everyone who heard him was amazedย at his understanding and his answers.ย When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His motherย said to him, โ€œSon, why have you treated us like this? Your fatherย and I have been anxiously searching for you.โ€

โ€œWhy were you searching for me?โ€ย he asked.ย โ€œDidnโ€™t you know I had to be in my Fatherโ€™s house?โ€ But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

Luke 2:41-50

Who have you believed Jesus to be?ย

The world has so many depictions of what Jesus โ€œlooks like.โ€ White Jesus, Black Jesus, Buddha Jesus, Italian Jesus — it seems as though everyone has taken their idea of Jesus and made it reflect their own image. This practice is a dishonoring habit by churches everywhere who spend so much time painting Jesus to reflect their faces, instead of painting themselves to look more like Jesus.

No matter where you are at in your walk with Christ, I think itโ€™s safe to say weโ€™ve all had different perspectives of who Jesus is. For me, Iโ€™ve always thought of him as a Mediterranean- looking trim man with brown flowy locks. I can thank several movies and documentaries for that image. Iโ€™ve also thought of him as Godโ€™s Son who sits on a seat lower than God, answers to His requests and working as the hands and feet of Godโ€™s Kingdom — another misconception that again, devalues the full power and glory of Christ. Why? Because Jesus isnโ€™t less than God or inferior. Jesus is God as a part of the Trinity. Three-in-One, Father, Spirit, Son. Jesus sits at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19) and was present at creation (Genesis 1:26).ย

See, here in Luke 2, Jesusโ€™ parents knew he was a seed planted in Mary by God, but they still couldnโ€™t wrap their heads around what that really meant. When they lost Jesus in the crowds in Jerusalem, they searched tirelessly for Him everywhere but one place โ€“ the temple. If they truly understood who Jesus was, that wouldโ€™ve been the first place they looked. But to them, all they could see was their young son who was just a little boy. Where could he possibly have gone? Once found, they wereย amazedย at what they were seeing. That same little boy was teaching/preaching in the temple courts,ย communing with His Father.ย

Duh, where else would He be?ย

I challenge you to ask yourself this: What lies/misconceptions/myths are you believing about Jesus? And how are those misconceptions hindering you from being truly amazed by his power and presence in your life? Where are you looking for Jesus and missing Him, when in reality, you simply need to go to the Father to find Him?ย

The best way to find out who Jesus REALLY is, is to read through His words and interactions with others in the gospels. Study His character and you will discover Godโ€™s character. Study His love and you will understand Godโ€™s love. Study His kindness, grace and compassion and you will see what an amazingly kind and compassionate God we serve.ย

Knowing Jesus means knowing the Father โ€“ I encourage you to get to know Him today.ย

Amazing Proof

Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.ย When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

When Jesus saw their faith, he said,ย โ€œFriend, your sins are forgiven.โ€

The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, โ€œWho is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?โ€

Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked,ย โ€œWhy are you thinking these things in your hearts?ย Which is easier: to say, โ€˜Your sins are forgiven,โ€™ or to say, โ€˜Get up and walkโ€™?ย But I want you to know that the Son of Manย has authority on earth to forgive sins.โ€ย So he said to the paralyzed man,ย โ€œI tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.โ€ย Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.ย 26ย Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.ย They were filled with awe and said, โ€œWe have seen remarkable things today.โ€

Luke 5:18-26

โ€œFollow the science.โ€ย ย โ€œBelieve in science.โ€ย ย Sound familiar?ย ย And yet throughout this year โ€œscienceโ€ seems to not be the concrete โ€œsaviorโ€ so many want it to be.ย ย I once had a woman tell me she wears her mask to โ€œshow her love for meโ€ because science says itโ€™ll somehow save me that she is wearing a mask.ย ย While Iโ€™m not here to debate wearing or not wearing a mask I can tell you that her wearing a mask doesnโ€™t prove to me she loves me.ย ย Iโ€™m appreciative when someone doesnโ€™t sneeze or cough in my face but I donโ€™t consider that a proof of their love for me either โ€“ itโ€™s just courteous.

We are a people that love proof.ย ย So often the proof we desire is that which validates our own opinions โ€“ even in the face of completely opposite proof.ย ย My father is an atheist.ย ย While I donโ€™t expect everyone to suddenly be a Christian, the idea of not believing there is a Divine Entity that had its hand it creating us and the universe seems so, well, unscientific.ย ย But just like the pharisees and teachers of the law in the verses today, sometimes we just have a hard time believing even when something amazing is happening right in front of our face.ย ย ย They were so focused on their twisted version of the Law they couldnโ€™t even allow the people to glorify God when faced with miracles.

And then Jesus.ย ย Just the simple fact that the paralytic manโ€™s friends knew that if they could just get him close to Jesus, he would be healed was amazing.ย ย Where was their proof?ย ย To passersby watching them up on the roof trying to lower him down might have scoffed and thought they were crazy.ย ย But to the friends, they had only heard of Jesusโ€™ miracles and put their faith in the unknown.ย ย For the people inside the house watching Jesus heal the man they had all the proof they needed as to who He was.ย ย And yet their sticking point was Jesus forgiving the manโ€™s sins.ย ย The healing proof still wasnโ€™t enough for them.

I so frequently see things in nature, not just the amazing ecosystem God created for us humans to survive, but also the heart wrenching beauty and think, โ€œHow can anyone not believe there is a God?โ€  What more proof do they need?  Our bodies are fine tuned to this earth.  The circular systems of creating breathable air, water to drink, food to eat, and sunshine and darkness for our bodies to succeed are really all the proof we should need.

My husband and I got four baby chicks back in March.ย ย They are now big, beautiful ladies that lay eggs daily.ย ย I asked my husband the other day, โ€œIs there any other animal on this planet that works so hard to feed us humans?โ€ย ย The chicken, according to the Smithsonian, dates back between 7,000 to 10,000 years.ย ย Itโ€™s mentioned both in the Old and New Testaments.ย ย And if you look up a picture of the innards of a chicken youโ€™ll see it is quite simple.ย ย In fact, it seems its sole purpose it to lay eggs.ย ย ย Thereโ€™s really nothing fancy and yet they are amazingly fascinating.ย ย The process by which an egg ends up being an egg seems magical.ย ย And yet it happens every, single day.ย ย Each time I collect eggs I thank the ladies for their hard work.ย ย Because I know the next step for that egg will be something delicious โ€“ nourishment for my husband before he heads off to work, a small but important part in homemade cinnamon rolls, the key ingredient to a souffle.ย ย The chicken was made specifically to lay eggs โ€“ fertilized or not.ย ย And we were made to eat them.

And yet we still want proof.ย ย When I hear non-believers ask for proof I just smile.ย ย They are their own proof.ย ย Their amazingly complicated body system โ€“ the most complicated of all the animals on the planet โ€“ thatโ€™s their proof.ย ย Every breath we take, thatโ€™s our proof.ย ย And the fact that we are the only species to yearn for a purpose on this globe, to question why we are here, is even more proof.ย ย ย Sometimes the proof we seek is in the absence of something.ย ย For the pharisees, they wanted proof that Jesus could forgive sins.ย ย And yet they witnessed a God-given miracle right in front of their faces.ย ย

Goose bumpsย evolvedย to make our ancestorsโ€™ hair stand up, making them appear more threatening to predators.

As you breathe, most of the air is going in and out of oneย nostril. Every few hours, the workload shifts to the other nostril.

Yourย tongueย is made up of eight interwoven muscles, similar in structure to an elephantโ€™s trunk or an octopusโ€™s tentacle.

On aย genetic level, all human beings are more than 99 percent identical.

25 Amazing Facts About the Human Body by Mental Floss

How much amazing proof are you overlooking every day?ย ย Every single minute of every single hour we take a breath, God proves His existence.ย ย The โ€œscienceโ€ surrounds us.ย ย It is us.ย ย We are His amazing proof.

Amazing Authority

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit

Then he went down to Capernaum,ย a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. They were amazed at his teaching,ย because his words had authority.

ย In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,ย โ€œGo away! What do you want with us,Jesus of Nazareth?ย Have you come to destroy us? I know who you areโ€”the Holy One of God!โ€

ย โ€œBe quiet!โ€ย Jesus said sternly.ย โ€œCome out of him!โ€Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

All the people were amazedย and said to each other, โ€œWhat words these are! With authorityย and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!โ€ย 37ย And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.

Luke 4:31-37

I always like to imagine what it would have been like to be in Jesusโ€™ presence on earth. To hear his voice and feel the power that flowed from His fingertips.ย

Throughout Jesusโ€™ time on earth, we see many instances where he is able to command an entire crowd, heal someone with simply a few words and cast out demons just with his presence. There is no doubt that being in the presence of Jesus meant feeling an indescribable authority. As described in Luke 4:32, it says that His word โ€œpossessed authority.โ€ Those listening didnโ€™t quite know why or how โ€“ but they knew that He had a level of authority that was bigger than themselves, bigger than even the Chief Priests they bowed down to.ย

Recognizing Jesusโ€™ amazing authority is pivotal for us. Itโ€™s pivotal when we read scripture, its critical when we pray, and itโ€™s important to remember when we find ourselves with a tight grip around the so-called โ€œhandlesโ€ of our life we think we have. Jesusโ€™ authority trumps all. The Lordโ€™s Word trumps all. The authority that Jesus spoke with here in Luke 4 was noticeable to the crowds because it was the mighty power of God that was flowing through Him, touching the deepest parts of each individual’s hearts and souls.ย

But I want you to know that the Son of Manย has authority on earth to forgive sins.โ€ย So he said to the paralyzed man,ย โ€œGet up, take your mat and go home.โ€ย Then the man got up and went home.

Matthew 9:6-7

When we read Godโ€™s Word, we mustnโ€™t forget that it still โ€“ and always will โ€“ possesses the same level of authority that Jesus spoke with that day in Capernaum. When He says โ€œlove your enemy,โ€ He commands that with authority. When He says โ€œblessed are those who are persecuted,โ€ He speaks that with authority. And when He says โ€œyou must lose your life before you gain it,โ€ He means it.ย

โ€œCome, follow me,โ€ย Jesus said,ย โ€œand I will send you out to fish for people.โ€ย At once they left their nets and followed him.

Mark 1:17-18

All Jesus needed to do was extend a hand and Peter dropped his nets and abandoned everything to follow Him. His presence commanded authority and His voice was one of love, grace and comfort. Authority doesnโ€™t have to mean โ€œdictatorshipโ€ โ€“ it can also mean trusting, strong, stable and yes, comforting.ย

God wants to have amazing authority in your life because He wants to relieve you of the control, the worry, the anxiety and stress in which you toil. He wants to be the guiding light, the north star and compass that shows you which way is right. And when we give God total authority in our lives He does indeed show up in mighty ways. He takes control and leads us down paths we never thought we could venture down. His authority is the greatest thing that is available to everyone and anyone โ€“ all we have to do it trust him with our lives.

I donโ€™t know about you, but I am often relieved when I remember that itโ€™s King Jesus on the throne and not myself, not someone else, not idols or things. King Jesus is in control, and Iโ€™ve never felt more content in that truth โ€“ no matter what may come my way.ย

The very word “authority” has within it the word “author. ” An author is someone who creates and possesses a particular work. Insofar as God is the foundation of all authority, He exercises that foundation because He is the author and the owner ofย His creation. He is the foundation upon which all other authority stands or falls.

Amazingly Interrupted

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,ย the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.ย He saw at the waterโ€™s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.ย He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,ย โ€œPut out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.โ€

Simon answered, โ€œMaster,ย weโ€™ve worked hard all night and havenโ€™t caught anything.ย But because you say so, I will let down the nets.โ€

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.ย So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesusโ€™ knees and said, โ€œGo away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!โ€ย  For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,ย and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simonโ€™s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon,ย โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid;ย from now on you will fish for people.โ€ย So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Luke 5:1-11

I think a lot of us feel like 2020 has been one giant interruption in our lives.ย ย We had beautiful weddings planned, vacations to experience, new jobs on the horizon, a blossoming business, a full retirement schedule.ย ย And then February descended upon us.ย ย To put it mildly itโ€™s been one giant cluster.ย ย Recently, I saw an Instagram post by the Christian womenโ€™s group Proverbs 31 that addressed our need to rely on God during these tough times.ย ย One of the commentors posted a very distraught list of what she has been dealing with, including the loss of a loved one.ย ย She said she was having a hard time seeing God in the middle of everything.ย ย And yet He is right there if we truly know His character.ย ย Heโ€™s the one interrupting our plans.

In the verses today Simon, an experienced fisherman, had just pulled his boat in after a long, hard, unsuccessful day of fishing.  He sat and listened to Jesus as he preached to the masses on the shore.  Suddenly, Jesus asks for a ride out away from the shore to better speak to everyone.  Iโ€™m sure Simon had a mix of emotions.  Here he was, probably dead tired but still might have been honored to have the famous rabbi use his boat.  And then Jesus really interrupted his plans to get home, have dinner and finally get some sleep.  The experienced fisherman was quite sure that another few hours out on the lake would produce nothing โ€“ he should know heโ€™d been a fisherman on that lake all his life.  Jesus wasnโ€™t even from a fishing family!  But something about the rabbi made Simon comply.  And as the story finishes, we see Simon and the other fisherman completely interrupting everything about their lives and deciding to become disciples.

God frequently tries to interrupt our โ€œbright ideasโ€ and โ€œbest laid plans.โ€ย ย The question for us is when we hear or feel His Holy Spirit urging us to take a new direction are we like Simon, willing to comply?ย ย ย ย Or are we like the rich king, unwilling to give up what we have and know?ย ย So many of us say we want God to speak to us but do we really?ย ย

A couple years ago I was amazingly interrupted by Jesus.ย ย I worked as an administrative substitute in our local school district.ย ย I was very busy.ย ย And I wore that busyness as a badge of honor.ย ย ย I had jobs assigned five days a week.ย ย And then Jesus interrupted me.ย ย He urged me, through a vision, to take specific action each week and feed the homeless for a year.ย ย This was not in my plans.ย ย But it was something I had asked for.ย ย I had been praying for growth in my trust in the Lord.ย ย I kept asking for direction.ย ย Feeding the homeless in our large downtown was never on my radar.ย ย What also wasnโ€™t in my plan was giving up working a few days a week to accomplish Jesusโ€™ vision for me.ย ย It was an amazing interruption.ย

ย

He said, โ€œDo this for me.โ€ย ย And I did.ย ย The lessons I learned during that year were ones that no sermon or Bible study could ever teach me.ย ย My patterns of worry, distrust, control, over-planning, pride, feeling alone, all were tested.ย ย It was never about feeding the homeless.ย ย It was about God finding a way to snap me out of destructive patterns โ€“ interrupting me and re-setting me.

Theย Lordย blessed the latter part of Jobโ€™s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys.ย And he also had seven sons and three daughters.

Job 42:12-13

Iโ€™ve told many people about this experience.ย ย And, at the same time I tell them they should pray for something equally amazing to interrupt their lives.ย ย So many of them either look scared or even voice their fear of such an occurrence.ย ย Thatโ€™s why I ask, โ€œDo you really want to hear from God?โ€ย ย Because I can almost guarantee that what He says to you will be unexpected and will challenge you to interrupt your life.ย ย But like Job whose life was severely interrupted, the amazing blessings you receive will be immeasurable.ย ย God has interrupted my life a few more times since my vision. And each time has brought me closer to Him. I urge you today to pray for interruption.ย ย To pray to do Godโ€™s work.ย ย To pray that He asks to guide your boat out into the open water.

An Amazingly Balanced Life

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

1 Peter 5: 6-11

Looking back over mine and Madisonโ€™s posts this week I kept hearing one word whispered to me โ€“ balance. Not just balance in our own lives but balance in the universal sense.  Balance as in how God works throughout our lives.  I tend to cringe a little when people throw around the phrase, โ€œNot of This World,โ€ because taken out of the context of truly understanding our relationship with God it may sound dismissive of our everyday problems.  God didnโ€™t just put us here to wait for the bus to pick us up for the hereafter.  He wants us to live out our lives in His name as we go about this thing called โ€œlife on planet earth.โ€  And He wants us to do it knowing He is waiting for us.   Itโ€™s His amazing love for us that calls us to live a balanced life, in His name.  Balanced with conviction and grace, humbleness and exaltation, watchful and trusting, broken and healed, and persecuted and restored.

The verses today in 1 Peter show this amazing balance.  We are to be humble so God may exalt us.  We are to be watchful and yet trusting that God will care for us.  We will suffer and God will restore us.  And we are to do all this right here during our time in this place.   Each day we are admonished by God to find this balance of living our everyday lives โ€“ parenting, cooking, cleaning, working, being citizens and neighbors โ€“ all the while with Him in mind.  We seek the healing hands of doctors yet pray in Jesusโ€™ name for healing and wisdom for the healers.  We are to work hard and take care of ourselves and our families while keeping our eyes on Him โ€“ not placing idols up in front of Him.

And then thereโ€™s conviction.  So often the concept of conviction is misunderstood as condemnation.  For many we grasp for the joy and the good without the acknowledgement of the things making us out of balance.  Thereโ€™s the โ€œgoodโ€ and the โ€œnot as good.โ€  That leads us to tricking ourselves into thinking thereโ€™s โ€œvictim-lessโ€ actions and sins.  There are no โ€œvictim-lessโ€ sins in Godโ€™s world.  Thatโ€™s because He loves each and every one of us.  He has a purpose for each of us.  So, if we give in to drinking, drugs, sexual immorality, etc it means we arenโ€™t doing the true work He has for us.  And by ignoring the very words of Jesus we can ignore that each of us are sinful people.

If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.

John 15:22

When we walk around with blinders on itโ€™s easy to see the world from a very limited perspective.ย ย It may even feel comfortable.ย ย But hereโ€™s where balance comes in.ย ย Without the conviction of sin there is no need for His amazing grace and forgiveness.ย ย Satan doesnโ€™t want us to be convicted and receive Godโ€™s grace.ย ย He wants us to feel condemned and guilty.ย ย Conviction calls us to change direction.ย ย Conviction is needed for growth.ย ย And if we hear what God wants of us and ignore it, we allow satan to work in our lives.ย ย We know the sin.ย ย We then choose to embrace it or work it out with God.ย ย That choice decides our balance.ย ย

How many of us leave our communing with God and finding that balance until a more convenient time?ย ย We are so tired at the end of the day we struggle to finish a Bible study, to journal, to do a devotional, to even pray.ย ย My BSGs were tasked to discuss a time they felt pulled away from God.ย ย For me it was during my kidsโ€™ sports years.ย ย Weekend games and tournaments meant not attending church.ย ย And I certainly didnโ€™t bring along any God-focused reading material.ย ย And yet, I have to say thatโ€™s a time in my life I needed God the most.ย ย I was really out of balance.

When we seek that balance God desires for us in all things we find we donโ€™t need to binge eat, be constantly fearful, obsessive, overly emotional.  We live in the center, squarely in His love.  We keep our work and play on His track.  We balance our fears and concerns about this world with the knowledge of what He has in store for us after our brief time here on earth.

I thank God for helping me seek a balanced life.  For I know that every time I fail in this world I can look to Him for His grace.

Amazing Grace

At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.ย All those who heard him were astonished and asked, โ€œIsnโ€™t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name?ย And hasnโ€™t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?โ€ย Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.

Acts 9:20-22

Apart from the amazing miracles of the Messiah, these verses tell one of the most amazing stories in the Bible.

Saul of Tarsus was a wretched man. He was the LAST and I mean THE LAST person in Israel who wouldโ€™ve been saved. The disciples and all Christians feared Saul for he was responsible for murdering and slaughtering anyone who professed belief in Christ. He was infamous amongst the Christians โ€“ comparable to terrorists in ISIS today. Saul was the head honcho terrorist to the Christians.

And then he was saved.ย

Whenever I read about the conversion of Saul, I always like to immerse myself in what it truly wouldโ€™ve looked and felt like to see a man who I so deeply feared, now confessing Jesus as the Messiah. To say I would be amazed would be an understatement. I wouldnโ€™t believe my eyes, in fact, I could see myself rubbing them to make sure I was not dreaming โ€“ maybe even pinch myself. To the Christians AND the Jews living in Damascus, they couldnโ€™t believe their eyes either. How could this man go from murderer to disciple in a matter of days?ย

The answer? His amazing grace.ย

You see, it had to be Saul (Paul). There was no one else so broken, so poisoned by bitterness and revenge who wouldโ€™ve fallen to their knees any harder than Paul did. God chose the most feared man in Israel as His ambassador to show His people that EVEN Saul, the Christian Killer, could be saved by His amazing grace. Now the housewife, the common man, the prostitute, the tax collector could look upon themselves and consider what the Lord did with Paul and see that EVEN they could be saved by His grace. Again, it had to be Saul.ย

Saul the Persecutor

We may not all be murderers or terrorists, but I know many of us look upon ourselves with the same attitude as Paul did. โ€œI was the last person people wouldโ€™ve thought would be saved.โ€ Maybe you were an outsider in your family, a rebel amongst your friends, or even an enemy of Godโ€™s for a time being. The fact is He is still saving Pauls each and every day. He saves people like you and me for the great testimony we have to tell to those who do not believe. He uses the wretched to display his amazing grace. He uses the broken to shine His redeeming light through. Thatโ€™s pretty amazing.ย

Saul the Saved

Because of the sins Paul committed, he carried his salvation with great responsibility. He lived his life after Christ with a great thorn in his side โ€“ a thorn I believe (though many have their theories) symbolizes the guilt he feels for all those he was responsible for murdering. Because of this thorn, Paul lived his life like it was not his own. He lived his life for Christ because he knew that it was Christ alone that gave him a second chance at love, joy, peace โ€“ eternal life. The fact of the matter is, Jesus did the same for us. Our salvation, while maybe not as dramatic as Paulโ€™s, is the same as Paulโ€™s. We were wretched sinners, in need of a Savior and Jesus gave us that second chance. For that, I pray we all realize that our lives are not our own, but the one who reached down and pulled us out of the sinking sand that was engulfing us.ย

Go in that amazing truth today and pray that you find ways to continually lay your life at His feet, just as Paul did.ย

Amazing Truths

And as he taught them, he said,ย โ€œIs it not written: โ€˜My house will be called a house of prayer for all nationsโ€™?ย But you have made it โ€˜a den of robbers.โ€™โ€

The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,ย because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

Mark 11:17-18

Recently, during a road trip my husband and I were listening to the Robertsonโ€™s Unashamed podcast.ย ย The topic was the concept of being โ€œcancelledโ€ by society.ย ย In 2014, GQ magazine contacted the Duck Dynasty patriarch, Phil Robertson, to delve into this bearded phenomenon.ย ย During the interview he was asked for the definition of sin.ย ย He went on to quote 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterersย nor men who have sex with menย nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlersย will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Cor 6: 9-10

And he got cancelled.ย ย Literally.ย ย The producers put the show on hiatus โ€“ for quoting the Bible.ย ย Now, of course, we all can imagine the uproar.ย ย The media quoted Mr. Robertson as though it were his own words, calling him a homophobe and all sorts of names.ย ย Very few, in fact only a newspaper out of London, made it clear he was quoting from the Bible.ย ย As we like to say now, it was a lot of fake news.ย ย The truth was so easily accessed and so readily ignored.ย ย Here was a man who had few, if any secrets โ€“ and absolutely none about his faith journey.ย ย He was on an internationally televised show praying and preaching.ย ย And yet amazingly enough the media seemed shocked he believed in, taught, and quoted the Bible.

Jesus, in Mark 11, walks into the temple in Jerusalem and begins driving out the street vendors.ย ย When questioned by the chief priests He makes it clear what God expects from the people and the use of His temple.ย ย The priests were so frightened by the truths being spoken to the people that they wanted Jesus โ€œcancelled.โ€ย ย But do you notice the last part of the sentence? โ€œโ€ฆbecause the whole crowd was amazed at His teaching.โ€ย ย The people wanted to know the true Word of God and they listened with rapt attention.ย ย It frightened those in charge of their probable loss of power over the people.

What Phil Robertson is comfortable with is teaching the true Word of God to the people.ย ย Human sin is at the beginning through the end of the Bible. And much as we might like to, we arenโ€™t to pick and choose from which sins God has spoken.ย ย The truth of sin is written in every single book of the Bible.ย ย When our pastors and faith leaders ignore these truths, it handicaps us in our full understanding of Godโ€™s character and His expectations of us.

My husband and I were talking about this after listening to the Unashamed podcast.ย ย If we never hear that we are all sinners, we are left with the impression that maybe only some people sin or thereโ€™s various levels of sinfulness.ย ย It isnโ€™t just โ€œthose peopleโ€ who are sexually immoral, who lie, who cheat, who create false idols.ย ย Itโ€™s all of us to one extent or another.ย ย Thatโ€™s the truth.ย ย Iโ€™ve never met someone in all the various Bible study and small groups that hasnโ€™t admitted to some kind of sin.ย ย But thatโ€™s only the first step to Godโ€™s amazing truths.

When the apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth he chastised them for their lax ways related to sin, especially sexual sin. It was being justified through false teachings. And it was tearing them apart. If we donโ€™t learn about sin how can we then learn true grace and forgiveness?ย ย I want to be on the โ€œright sideโ€ of God โ€“ not making up my own understandings.ย ย When our faith leaders avoid uncomfortable conversations like abortion, homosexuality, infidelity, etc how then are we lay people to fully understand how to treat people with grace, love, kindness and forgiveness?ย ย All are welcome to church but what does it mean to welcome someone who is sinning right now?ย ย What does it mean to have been sexually immoral or have had an abortion and now I want to live a Christian life?

I sin constantly.ย ย When I make a commitment to God to not use His name in vain and then turn around and cuss and use coarse language Iโ€™m sinning.ย ย I have a very difficult time honoring my parents and not trashing them to my inner circle (heck, even my outer, outer circle).ย  I encouraged a friend to have an abortion. I lived with my husband before we were married. ย Iโ€™m prideful.ย ย I covet.ย ย I place idols above God.ย ย None of these make me any better or worse than those who commit the sins we tend to think as the โ€œbiggies.โ€ย ย And yet we dance around the truth of sin and its effects on our lives and the world.

God is the Alpha and Omega.ย ย He is always complete.ย ย He is always teaching us and bringing us full circle.ย ย We need to live in that completeness.ย ย The completeness that His amazing truths, as revealed in the Bible, tell us includes opening our eyes to sin AND our hearts to grace.ย ย Grace without the โ€œwhat and whyโ€ is almost meaningless.ย ย Itโ€™s like a teenager tossing a snide โ€œsooooorrrryy.โ€ย ย We want that teenager to understand what was wrong about their action and why.ย ย The apology, when spoken from the heart, means so much more.ย ย If we run around tossing out blind acceptance, thinking it is love and grace, we miss out on the opportunity to really dig into Godโ€™s amazing plan for us.ย ย

I want to be held to account by God.ย ย I want to be amazed by the truths written in His Book.ย ย ย And if knowing and speaking those truths to fellow Christians or people asking me what God says about a topic then so be it.ย ย Because I am learning the complete truth.ย ย I am learning each day how to have open eyes tied to an open heart.ย ย His amazing truths about my sin are made complete with His amazing truths about His love.

The Amazing Sacrifice

โ€œTeacher,โ€ the man replied, โ€œIโ€™ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.โ€ Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. โ€œThere is still one thing you havenโ€™t done,โ€ he told him. โ€œGo and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.โ€ At this the manโ€™s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, โ€œHow hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!โ€ This amazed them. But Jesus said again, โ€œDear children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God. In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!โ€ The disciples were astounded. โ€œThen who in the world can be saved?โ€ they asked. Jesus looked at them intently and said, โ€œHumanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.โ€ Then Peter began to speak up. โ€œWeโ€™ve given up everything to follow you,โ€ he said. โ€œYes,โ€ Jesus replied, โ€œand I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News, will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and propertyโ€”along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life. But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then.โ€

Mark 10:29-31

There was one point in my life โ€“ actually a few weeks ago (I hate to admit) โ€“ where I would sit on my couch in utter angst and anxiety. No, not about important things, but about wall dรฉcor. Yup, you heard it. I would sit on my couch with anxiety about the lack of cute, trendy wall dรฉcor and decorations in my apartment. I was so anxious about what people would think of us when they came over, I was so anxious about having cute Fall dรฉcor before โ€œPumpkin Spice Seasonโ€ hit. What was I going to do? Hobby Lobby FOR SURE by now has already off-loaded all of their Fall dรฉcor for Christmas stuff โ€“ the best stuff has already been bought and picked through. What was I going to do? As my heart rate started to rise, I heard the Lord say to me โ€œDo you think I care about any of this?โ€ My anxious thoughts stopped. I listened and heard again โ€“ โ€œDo you think the things on your walls are treasures you will store in Heaven?โ€ Woah โ€“ I heard the message loud and clear.

I was toiling over useless, temporary, meaningless possessions INSTEAD of spending that time storing up REAL treasures in Heaven. I was convicted.

Now, Iโ€™m not saying decorating your house or shopping at Hobby Lobby is a sin. What I am saying is to consider the weight we put on those things. Iโ€™m asking us to consider if weโ€™ve made material things idols in our lives

Jesusโ€™ words in Mark 10:29-31 cut me deep to the core โ€“ I hope they do for you too. These verses stir me to ask myself, โ€œHow much of my life is spent toiling over temporary gains?โ€ Reading Jesusโ€™ words over again alleviate many of my silly โ€“ yet very real โ€“ anxieties about possessions and material things. We must remember that the Lord God does not look upon us and see the things weโ€™ve collected, the money weโ€™ve made or the beautiful house weโ€™ve decorated for Fall. No โ€“ He sees His son standing as an eternal sacrifice for our sins. He sees us as his prodigal children whom He loves.

This truth truly amazes me. As the world tells us that we need this, we need that โ€“ this will give you favor in the eyes of man and this will surely bring you pleasure and happiness โ€“ God says lay it all down. Give it all up. And for those of you that ask, โ€œDoes He really mean ALL of it?โ€ I would say โ€“ to some extent โ€“ yes. Our first fruits (earnings) should always go to the Lord, and as Jesus said in Luke 16:

โ€œOne who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.โ€

Luke 16:10

No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.โ€

Luke 16:13

If I am covetousness of what little I have โ€“ how much more will sin grow within my heart the more I gain? The Lord was speaking a very important truth to me that day. For material things are not of ANY value to Him. He wants my heart. He wants my attention. He wants my full dedication โ€“ things that cost nothing โ€“ but everything at the same time.

The disciples couldnโ€™t believe what Jesus was saying. For their entire lives they saw the Chief Priests and Kings lavished with riches and luxuries. To them, those were the people who were closest to God. They were experiencing a real-time paradigm shift. You mean to say that now the lame, the weak, the poor are the blessed? Not the rich and noble?  Pretty amazing stuff!

What Jesus was getting at here is that the more possessions one has, the more divided his heart becomes. The more his money has gone to things other than Kingdom purposes. He warned his disciples loud and clear that being rich was not the way into the Kingdom of God. No, it was intimacy with the Father, sacrifice and a dedication to seeing salvation sweep across the nations.

So โ€“ why are we so enthralled by things of this Earth? I urge you to spend time in prayer today asking God to reveal what youโ€™ve been idolizing recently. I pray that the next time you find yourself coveting someone elseโ€™s possessions, you direct your thoughts, your anxieties and worries to the amazing God-given things above โ€“ blessings that will reward you many treasures in Heaven.

Amazingly Healed

Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit

โ€œWhen they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them.ย As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

ย โ€œWhat are you arguing with them about?โ€ย he asked.

ย A man in the crowd answered, โ€œTeacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech.ย Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.โ€

โ€œYou unbelieving generation,โ€ย Jesus replied,ย โ€œhow long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.โ€ So, they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

Jesus asked the boyโ€™s father,ย โ€œHow long has he been like this?โ€ โ€œFrom childhood,โ€ he answered.ย โ€œIt has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.โ€

โ€œโ€˜If you canโ€™?โ€ย said Jesus.ย โ€œEverything is possible for one who believes.โ€ Immediately the boyโ€™s father exclaimed, โ€œI do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!โ€

When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene,ย he rebuked the impure spirit.ย โ€œYou deaf and mute spirit,โ€ย he said,ย โ€œI command you, come out of him and never enter him again.โ€ The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, โ€œHeโ€™s dead.โ€ย But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately,ย โ€œWhy couldnโ€™t we drive it out?โ€ He replied,ย โ€œThis kind can come out only by prayer.[a]โ€

Mark 9:14-29

My eldest daughter is a doctor of physical therapy.ย ย That alone is a miracle.ย ย She studied and worked hard throughout her public school years and yet the results were not always reflective of that work.ย ย Once she entered college she leaned on the lessons learned from getting help early and how to study.ย ย She excelled beyond belief.ย ย As a physical therapist she has seen the fruits of her labor โ€“ the healing power of her education.ย ย She has helped many women in the specialty of lower abdomen and uterine pain.ย ย Iโ€™m so proud of her.ย ย That being said, as my faith journey moves along, Iโ€™ve accepted that some healing only comes from prayer.

โ€œBegin to rejoice in the Lord, and your bones will flourish like an herb, and your cheeks will glow with the bloom of health and freshness.ย ย Worry, fear, distrust, careโ€”are all poisonous!ย ย Joy is balm and healing, and if you will but rejoice, God will give power.โ€

A.B. Simpson

I like this quote because it reminds me of an amazing healing I saw take place in a friend many years ago.ย ย She had fallen and broken her upper arm.ย ย For many months she went to doctorsโ€™ appointments and had all sorts of imaging.ย ย And yet her bone was not naturally re-growing and healing.ย ย It became the usual sight to see her in an arm sling that year.ย ย She was like a baby bird with a broken wing.ย ย Her disappointment after each doctorโ€™s appointment was evident.ย ย And yet she kept praying for healing.ย ย At the end of that painful year I still recall seeing her at church one day and she was full of joy!ย ย Her doctor, on the other hand was so perplexed.ย ย At her appointment that week she had another x-ray.ย ย And her bone was completely healed.ย ย The specialists had no explanation.ย ย But she knew the amazing answer.ย ย Her prayers were heard.

I love how the father in the Bible verse today has the guts to admit to Jesusโ€™ face that he has doubts.  โ€œIF you can do anythingโ€ is what he says.  And then asks for help in overcoming his unbelief.  My friend Betsy once shared a powerful prayer technique with my BSGs.  She said if you arenโ€™t ready to believe or take action then ask, in prayer, for help in believing.

How many of us, when faced with illness or injury arenโ€™t really sure God can heal?ย  So many of us tend to rely solely on our surgeons, psychologists, specialists, etc. And we forget to turn to God for healing or even to ask for His guiding hands for those gifted doctors. ย If you are unsure, pray to resolve your unbelief.ย ย When the disciples asked Jesus why they werenโ€™t able to cure the boy in this amazing Bible event he responded by telling them they needed to draw on the power of God through prayer.ย

The disciples had been careless with their personal spiritual walk and had neglected communing with God through prayer and fasting.

Warren Wiersbe, New Testament Bible Commentary

Notice this is not about praying โ€œenoughโ€ or being faithful โ€œenough.โ€ย ย Itโ€™s about praying and being faithful and believing.ย ย His amazing healing power is available to the faithful.ย ย And while we may not always know why or when He chooses to heal someone or not, we need to rest in trust that He has a plan far greater than ours.ย ย We must never stop praying and asking for His amazing healing power.
