The Law of Love

Even though I can pretty much talk to anyone at anytime I donโ€™t particularly like to talk to people when Iโ€™m coming home on an airplane from visiting my daughter.ย ย I only get to see her about 4 times a year and when I leave her, Iโ€™m sad and contemplative.ย ย I prefer to put my headphones on and read a book.ย ย On one trip home, I sat next to a man who immediately started talking to me.ย ย Iโ€™m not sure how we got on the subject of God, the Bible and faith but he was prepped.ย ย He was ready to make sure I knew how much he knew about the โ€œtruthโ€ of the Bible.ย ย He could quote any scripture that would back up his point of view.ย ย The trinity was false, according to him, because it promoted multi-theism.ย ย And on and on he went.ย ย When I would disagree, gently, he peppered me with more questions for which he already had answers.ย ย He was looking for ways to โ€œcatchโ€ me with improper theology.ย ย It didnโ€™t bother me.ย ย Iโ€™m always interested to hear more about the Bible.ย ย And Iโ€™m sure he wasnโ€™t completely wrong.ย ย He just seemed to be taking scripture out of context.ย ย Towards the end, he started telling me about his church journey.ย ย He jumped from church to church based on obscure theological differences.ย ย He went from a large church, to a medium one, to a small gathering.ย ย He finally landed on his perfect church โ€“ the church of one.ย ย He called himself a โ€œsabbathist.โ€ย ย He didnโ€™t practice the sabbath on Sunday.ย ย It had to be Friday through Saturday.ย ย So, if you were thinking you could join his group of one, youโ€™d better make sure you worshipped and followed the rules on the right day.ย ย

When we arrived in San Diego and exited the plane, I had one thought.ย ย I had just met a real life, modern day Pharisee.ย ย I had one regret.ย ย I realized, squeezed into that packed airplane there had to have been multiple people hearing our conversation (or at least him talking since he did most of it).ย ย The opportunity I missed was to stop talking doctrine and scripture and ask him the most important question, โ€œBut do you love Jesus?โ€ย ย ย ย In that 3 ยฝ hours on the plane he never spoke of being a true disciple of Jesus.ย ย He only spoke of following the Mosaic law.ย ย I missed the chance to introduce him to the Royal Law โ€“ the Law of Love.

Pharisees cared more about strictly following Mosaic rules than they did about the idea behind God’s Word

This week James takes us through additional, difficult subjects: favoritism (yes, we all do it), loving our neighbor (even the gay couple), mercy (we all want it), and deeds (without being a โ€œchurch ladyโ€).ย ย He recognizes that when we try to live by Mosaic Law alone, itโ€™s like playing a game of โ€œwhack-a-mole.โ€ย ย When we stop doing one thing another sin pops up.ย ย We can never feel fully successful at living a sin-less life.ย ย But what we can do is love one another.

Warren Wiersbe says this about James 2 and the steps we are to take to go from being a โ€œbaby Christianโ€ to a mature Christian:

โ€œImmature people talk about their beliefs, but the mature person lives his faith.ย ย Hearing Godโ€™s Word and talking about Godโ€™s Word can never substitute for doing Godโ€™s word.”

Warren Wiersbe, New Testament Bible Commentary

Each of last weekโ€™s topics — trials, wisdom, listening, and living a clean life — were the personal building blocks for what James calls us to this week.ย ย Without faith that God is ever present in our trials, without wisdom to discern what God calls us to, when we donโ€™t listen to God, and when we give into immoral situations we continue to live by this worldโ€™s standards.ย

โ€œShow me your faith without deeds and I will show you my faith BY my deeds.โ€

James 2:18

James tells us we are called for something better.ย ย We need to be living outside the box, not trapped inside.ย ย First up tomorrow we will delve deeper into what following Jesusโ€™s Law of Love looks like when we treat people like God does โ€“ equally.

Have you ever met a modern-day Pharisee?ย ย What was your reaction?ย ย Do you find yourself trying to adhere to scripture but forget that one of the most important commandments is loving others?

Merciful Judge

We are living in a time that the word โ€œjusticeโ€ seems to hold so many different meanings โ€“ at times almost opposite meanings.  โ€œJusticeโ€ to some means punishing people for something they didnโ€™t participate in and happened about 200 years ago.  To others it means being able to take what you want because you feel victimized.  In some cities, โ€œjusticeโ€ means releasing hundreds of people who are in jail for murder, rape, burglary and the like.  Some people judge in the blink of an eye based on a short video.  Others judge simply because they already didnโ€™t like a person.   And yet others still believe in the idea of investigating a crime, bringing it to a court and evaluating all the facts before passing judgement.   I have a degree in Journalism and English.  I learned that passing judgement in the media was a no-no.  Somehow that lesson has disappeared from journalism school

We canโ€™t seem to escape โ€œun-just judgementโ€ these days.  What you wear, what you drive, where you live, what your skin color is, if you have a college degree or if you are old or young, we are judged by our neighbors, our enemies and even our fellow Christians.  I recently posted on Instagram a picture of a surgical mask.  I stated, โ€œThis mask does not symbolize your: kindness, faith, politics, intelligence, wokeness or love.  Itโ€™s just a mask.โ€  The mask, as promoted by governmental officials, has become yet another way to be judged.  Our โ€œCancel Cultureโ€ is swift in its judgement and mercy is nowhere to be found.

Thank the Lord that His judgement is merciful.  I mean He has been trying for thousands and thousands of years to get the majority of humanity on board with His simple rule โ€“ Obey God.  He has yet to pass His mighty judgement over us.  It does feel as though that time is getting closer and closer, however.

So often we want to take justice into our own hands.ย ย But itโ€™s important to understand the difference between daily justice that God calls us to and eternal justice.ย ย At times we think we must step in for God โ€“ with acts of anger, revenge or spite.ย ย God does not call us to scream a people in the streets. For one, I find most people screaming donโ€™t actually know what โ€œjusticeโ€ they need or who should be held to account.ย ย Rest assured that if itโ€™s justice God wants you to accomplish you will have His peace.ย ย Screaming in peopleโ€™s faces and looting wonโ€™t be part of His plan for you.ย ย As Jesusโ€™ people, we are called to step in for the weak and downtrodden.ย ย But we need not be the weak and downtrodden โ€“ because through Christ we are blessed and strengthened.ย ย A Christian who obeys God is destined to experience hardship and suffering, but His love and mercy sustains us for greater work.ย ย He asks us to judge others as we are judged by Him โ€“ with mercy and forgiveness.

Whether or not a person believes and accepts God and His Son, Jesus, he will still ultimately be judged in the eternal world.  We must believe that Truth.

โ€œI said to myself, โ€˜God will bring into judgement both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time to judge every deed.โ€™โ€

Ecclesiastes 3:17

Until then, God gives us opportunity after opportunity through His mercy to change course.  I, for one, am thankful for the chance to continue my path of imperfect progress without the justice served I deserve each day.

Doubt & Mercy

Whatโ€™s your reaction when encountering people who doubt โ€” doubt your understanding of facts, science, faith, morals, values?
.
Weโ€™ve become this society where what we know to be true and good and right is what everyone else MUST agree with. At a time when youโ€™d think weโ€™d grown to be more interested in varied ideas itโ€™s seems our desires to expand our minds and sphere of real friends keeps shrinking. An โ€œecho chamberโ€ is one in which we can only hear our voice. And unless we are God, our voice can frequently be wrong.
.
As a Christian, I see other Christians falling into a sea of doubt about the lessons and way of life we are called to. We donโ€™t want to be the lone voice outside societyโ€™s echo chamber. On the flip side we are called to be our Christian brothersโ€™ keepers โ€” being merciful to followers who struggle against societal lies and snatching each other out of the fires. And even more merciful to non-followers who have yet to accept the Truth of God.
.
A Christianโ€™s โ€œdoubtโ€ should only lie in the struggle with Godโ€™s Word as lived out in the worldโ€” not the Truth of Godโ€™s Word. When we see our Christian loved ones sinking further into that struggle with the world is when we need to act with Godโ€™s authority and be His lifeline.
.
When you doubt the right way to live out your life what action do you hope those around you take? Mercy or with condemnation?
