His Amazing Peace

Overhearingย what they said, Jesus told him,ย โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid; just believe.โ€

He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.ย When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.ย He went in and said to them,ย โ€œWhy all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.โ€ย But they laughed at him.

After he put them all out, he took the childโ€™s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.ย He took her by the handย and said to her,ย โ€œTalitha koum!โ€ย (which meansย โ€œLittle girl, I say to you, get up!โ€).ย Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old).ย At this they were completely astonished.

Mark 5:36-42

Iโ€™m writing this post on the United Statesโ€™ election day.ย ย When you read it, youโ€™ll know much more about who may be the next U.S. president.ย ย ย Thereโ€™s a lot of anxiety and fear swirling around the world right now because of this election.ย ย Unfortunately, so much of it is based on misinformation or downright disinformation.ย ย And a lot of it is designed to create fear and distrust. Whatโ€™s so different for me this presidential election is the peace I have, which is solely due to my trust in God.ย ย I am not afraid; I just believe.

In Markโ€™s retelling of Jesus bringing this young girl back to life he starts out with her father, a leader in the synagogue, coming to a large gathering around Jesus.ย ย He urgently pleaded with Jesus to come and heal his sick daughter.ย ย He believed that just by touching his daughter, Jesus will heal her.ย ย As Jesus walks through the crowds towards the manโ€™s house a woman, who had been bleeding for 12 years, reached out and touched Jesusโ€™ clothes.ย ย She thought:

โ€œIf I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.โ€

Mark 5:27

Jesus knew at once that someone had put their faith in him.ย ย He turned to the crowd and asked, โ€œWho touched my clothes?โ€ (Mark 5:30) Of course, a lot of people had probably touched him because they were all crowding around Him.ย ย We so often want to be โ€œfansโ€ of Jesus, His groupies.ย ย But how often do we turn to Him in complete and total surrender and ask for His healing power, His peace?ย ย How often do we put limits on His ability to โ€œmake all things work together for our good?โ€ (Romans 8:28). In fact, the simple act of turning to the crowd, searching for the woman who touched Him, caused the disciples and friends of the girlโ€™s father to be almost annoyed.ย ย He was taking time away from what he โ€œshouldโ€ have been doing which was healing the girl.ย ย In other words, we think Jesus as all knowing, all powerful and yet in the same breath assume he canโ€™t do all things.ย ย

We should not be so astonished, so amazed that Jesus can, by just being, heal us.ย ย We should not be so astonished that He also chooses to take action in His time.ย ย If we believe and have faith in the truths of the Bible, we must expect that, if Jesus can raise a little girl from the dead, if he can raise Lazarus from being many days dead, then He can handle anything else this world throws at Him.

This knowledge and trust is what has brought me through, not only this election season, but through the unrest brought on by Covid19.ย ย Each time I try and take back my fears and worries I am reminded in my Bible studies and through my amazing Christian relationships that peace can only be fully achieved by placing those fears back in Godโ€™s hands.ย ย A good friend has been completely transformed this year through this same process.ย ย My BSGs (Bible Study Girls) were reflecting today about how few times this friend speaks of โ€œher anxiety” — which she used to wear like a favorite coat.ย ย Imagine that โ€“ with all the mess that is 2020 her anxiety has all but disappeared.ย ย Pretty amazing.ย ย Those trials and tribulations that James writes of have been hammered home this year.

โ€œConsider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.โ€

James 1:2-3

Have you taken these โ€œopportunitiesโ€ of trials to grow in your faith?ย ย To grow closer to God?ย ย To grasp the promise of Jesusโ€™s peace?ย ย Another of my BSGs, who in a difficult trial, begged for Godโ€™s help and felt that peace descend over her.ย ย She described it as a weighted blanket โ€“ warm and calming.ย ย Isnโ€™t that more of what we want rather than living in constant disarray, discombobulation and wailing?ย

So, as I wait for the results of this important election, I use each time my mind wants to lean into worry to instead lean into Jesusโ€™ words โ€“ โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid; just believe.โ€ย ย And His amazing peace never fails to come over me.

The Lord bless me and keep me; the Lord makes his face shine on me and is gracious to me; the Lord turns His face toward me and gives me PEACE.

Amazed by Ordinary

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

“When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. โ€œWhere did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?โ€ they asked.โ€œIsnโ€™t this the carpenterโ€™s son? Isnโ€™t his motherโ€™s name Mary, and arenโ€™t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Arenโ€™t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?โ€ And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, โ€œA prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.โ€ And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.” Matthew 13:53-58

At first glance, these verses seem like just another story of Jesus teaching in a synagogue, healing the sick, and amazing those around Him with His wisdom and power. Yet, what amazed the crowds in this story the most about Jesus is just howย ordinaryย he was.ย

Jesus is teaching in his hometown of Nazareth. Here, the people watched Him grow up; they knew him as a small boy. They knew of his humble carpenter background, that his family was not from riches, and that his brothers and sisters were also just that โ€“ ordinary. They couldnโ€™t believe that someone who looked just like them could speak of such wisdom and perform such miracles.

Jesusโ€™ humble arrival on earth, first in a manger then as a carpenter and soon on a donkey, was all intentional. As Paul writes to the church in Corinth:

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised thingsโ€”and the things that are notโ€”to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.

1 Corinthians 1:27-29

God uses people just like you and me โ€“ ordinary people โ€“ as lights in this darkened world. He used His son as the ultimate example of what is looks like to be an ordinary person (though we know he was far from ordinary), who can also bring great glory to God while being rejected, persecuted, and cast out. People like Paul, Timothy, Titus, John– the list goes on — are all examples of God using the foolish to shame the wise.

โ€œAfter all, the thing that looks most ordinary might be the thing that leads you to victory.โ€

Matt Haig, The Midnight Library

I often struggle with โ€œimposter syndrome.โ€ I tend to think that I just got lucky with jobs, opportunities and such and find it hard to believe I really deserve the things in my life. I often live in fear of being โ€œfound out.” What if Iโ€™m not the professional they expected me to be? What if Iโ€™m not the Christian they thought I was? While there are many complexities to these thoughts, the biggest aspect is that I struggle to believe that God really trusts me with His Word and the responsibility of sharing it and shepherding others.

The amazing part? We can find freedom from the lies that tell us we arenโ€™t good enough or donโ€™t deserve to be a part Godโ€™s chosen people BECAUSE God calls the ordinary. We must always remember this: He qualifies the called, not calls the qualified

So today, I encourage you to stand amazed by Godโ€™s grace towards ordinary people like you and me. Let us be astonished that our God is near to the lowly, sees the weak, and cares for theย ordinary.

To Be Amazingly Singleminded

Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. All the people were astonished and said, โ€œCould this be the Son of David?โ€ But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, โ€œIt is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.โ€ Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, โ€œEvery kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Matthew 12:22-28

I love the part in these verses that states, โ€œJesus knew their thoughts.โ€  How amazing is it that right now, this very second, Jesus knows your thoughts?  He knows the thoughts of believers and non-believers.  What would He think about your thoughts right now?  Are they focused on the worries surrounding the election in the United States?  Are they worried about new virus-related shutdowns?  Are your thoughts of your precarious finances or your failing marriage?  Or, are they thoughts of how God has come through for you before and today is no different?  He has shown the way; he has opened doors before and this issue you face right now can be placed securely in His hands.

The โ€œpeople were astonished and said, โ€˜Could this be the Son of David?โ€™โ€  How often when God paves the way to solutions we might not have ever dreamt, that we even ask the question, โ€œcould this be Jesus?โ€  Or do we stand firm in single mindedness and state, โ€œThank you Lord.โ€? The Pharisees were so afraid of losing their power and control they wanted to be convinced that Jesus was healing with Satanโ€™s power.  And although when our prayers are answered we might not think Satan had something to do with it, how often do we just shrug and think of it as a coincidence?

Iโ€™ve written before of the struggles I have with my parents.  They are non-believers.  My father has stated he is an atheist.  And to put it mildly they are miserable.  They lead small, scared lives.  I was led this year to pray vehemently for them.  When I pray for them, I imagine the wall they have securely built around themselves.  A nice, sturdy brick tower.  Iโ€™ve asked God to break that wall down, to soften their hearts.  I know I canโ€™t do it.  It must be Godโ€™s actions.  And last week I had the chance to see their faces peeking through a few bricks that had been displaced.   Iโ€™ve offered to assist them during this difficult time of isolation.  Iโ€™ve brought them meals, puzzles, a Kindle.  Iโ€™ve offered to buy a meal service for them.  But each time Iโ€™ve been met with annoyance.  But last week I received a desperate text from my mother.  She explained they havenโ€™t been eating right and are very lonely.  So, I made up some meals and delivered them.  They were so grateful.  That may sound normal.  But grateful isnโ€™t normally in their vocabulary.  I lost track of how many times they thanked me.   As I drove away, I caught myself thinking like someone of this world โ€“ โ€œwell, finally they allowed me to help.  I couldโ€™ve been doing that all along.โ€  I forgot that this was not my doing.  A few blocks away I stopped my car and I prayed.  I prayed a grateful prayer to the Lord on High โ€“ the only way those bricks couldโ€™ve been removed.  I donโ€™t know if my parents will reach through and try and shore up those bricks again.  But for that day, that moment, I thanked God for allowing me to do His works and be His hands.  It was truly amazing.

โ€œGod opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.  Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.โ€

James 4:6-8

We canโ€™t continue to have one foot in for Jesus and one foot out.  Because that equation is actually both feet out.  In math, a positive times a negative is always negative.  The covenant with God is based on trust.  And when we vacillate between trusting Him and not, we allow Satan or worldly โ€œsolutionsโ€ to chip away at our peace.

Patterns are pointers.  They can very much reveal where a person is headed.  Positive patterns tend to produce productive outcomes.  Negative patterns canโ€™t help but produce negative impact.  Obedient patterns tend to produce closeness with God.  Disobedient patterns canโ€™t help but produce chaos and destruction.

Lysa Terkeurst, Trustworthy

So, when take for granted the miracles that Jesus works in and around our lives, what we are saying is we donโ€™t trust that itโ€™s Him.  Think of King David.  He was promised the kingdom but not only was it many years before he was made king, he had a target on his back by King Saul.  Put yourself in his shoes.  Many of us may have just given up and thought either God was lying or we misunderstood.  And, at the moment David had a chance to kill King Saul, he sought Godโ€™s counsel and remembered His promises.  But what if on the day he were crowned he said, โ€œFinally, I struggled and I fought and I accomplished this.โ€   David instead said,

Because of your promise, and according to your own heart you have brought about all this greatness to make your servant know it.  Therefore, you are great, O Lord God.  For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

2 Samuel 7:21-22

Take a moment and read the full text of 2 Samuel 7:18-29. You will read of a man amazed by the greatness of God.  A man amazed by the goodness of God.  A man amazed by how God is so trustworthy.  May we, this week in the midst of our fears and struggles and joys be so amazed.  May we stop the car, sit down, stop thinking and look up to the heavens and say โ€œI trust you fully God and I know that it is YOU at work.  I thank you for prayers fulfilled.โ€

His Amazing Covenant

Iโ€™m currently doing two different Bible studies โ€“ one that focuses on 1 & 2 Kings and another that accounts Jesusโ€™ last words in John.ย ย What strikes me about both is that as Godโ€™s children, we always seem to fail.ย ย We fail and we fail and we fail, yet He forgives and forgives and forgives.ย ย How amazing is that?ย ย

This week, I asked my BSGs (Bible Study Girls) a question: โ€œDoes God punish us?โ€  It led to a great discussion and a lot of contemplation.  The Old Testament is full of quite a lot of โ€œpunishment.โ€  We often see kingsโ€™ children die because of the โ€œevil they did in the eyes of the Lord.โ€ (1 Kings 15:34; 1 Kings 16:2, 7, 19, 26 and 31)  I mean, they just couldnโ€™t seem to figure out this whole obedience to God thing.  Most notably, King Zimri (1 Kings 16: 15-20) was so tainted by greed and power that his reign only last seven days before he died in a fire as consequence of his own sin. All the droughts, wars, disease and more โ€“ were all signs of a nation enthralled by the flesh rather than Godโ€™s authority and power.

These Old Testament stories often leave a bad taste in both the Christian and non-Christianโ€™s mouth. At the surface, they paint Godโ€™s wrath in vivid colors and appall those who canโ€™t grasp why God would let such terrible things happen to his chosen nation. The reality is, God is wrathful โ€“ and we mustnโ€™t forget that. But He is also a loving God whose plan was always Jesus, from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21. With that truth, we can re-read the story of the seven plagues, the 40 years in the wilderness and the tragedies of King David and know that God works all things for our good and His Glory โ€“ because of Jesus. At the center of this undeserving covenant we gain through Jesus is a desire for obedience and faithfulness to Godโ€™s Word BECAUSE we know the amazing sacrifice that was made for us on the cross. Amidst this, there is grace โ€“ so much grace. For God still knows that all of His children have fallen short of His glory, and will continue to fall short until we are joined in heaven one day. His plan has always been of love and forgiveness.  And thatโ€™s pretty amazing.

So, my BSGs and I  came to the conclusion that yes, there are consequences for sin and we will most likely always be hanging on tight to a pendulum that is constantly swinging between faith and doubt, but amidst that, we must trust that His plan is better and good, and right.

Besides, how often do we look in judgment at the disobedient child in the grocery store or in a restaurant and mutter to ourselves โ€œLooks like that child needs some discipline.โ€ Yet, we scoff and โ€œfind it hard to believeโ€ in a God who disciplines His children โ€“ for their good and His Glory. We must find comfort in knowing we have a Father who loves us so much that he disciplines us.

For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yieldsย the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.ย

Hebrews 12:11

I, for one am thankful to now be living under the loving discipline of a perfect Father. Knowing what it is like to live without an earthly one and living a majority of my life outside of Godโ€™s will, fulfilling the desires of my flesh โ€“ I am utterly grateful and amazed to have a God who cares for my heart and soul. I struggle to control situations, control those around me and those I love. When I realize that this control stems from a lack of trust in the love of my heavenly Father, I begin to loosen my grip and experience true freedom. Godโ€™s power to overwhelm me with His love is amazing. His forgiveness for me is amazing. His grace for me is amazing.ย

Once I started truly studying the Word of God, and Jesusโ€™ teachings, in the Bible I realized how loving, how amazing the character of God is.  He always has our best interest in mind.  He is always leading us to something better.  He never gives up on us, no matter how many times we give up on Him. Jesusโ€™ lineage, as seen in Matthew 1, is made up of a bunch of people just like us. People who have failed God. People like King David who is the textbook example of a sinner, yet He is a sinner whose household was redeemed because of Jesus.

Nevertheless, for Davidโ€™s sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem.

1 Kings 15:4

So today, as we enter a tumultuous, unnerving time in the United States, I challenge you to join me in finding amazement in God each day. From now until the end of November, check back every day for encouragement and guidance through the scripture as we visit several examples of how Jesus left those around him amazed.

Although we may lack faith or struggle to believe that His plans for our world are good, we must remember the plan God had for the early nation of Israel. The first part of that redemption has already been fulfilled, now we must wait expectantly for the amazing work He has in store.

A Jesus Moment

I rushed home from errands, pulled the car in the garage and quickly went to close the garage door behind me.  As I turned, I looked to make sure my car was in far enough (learning from past mistakes!).  And I saw it.  It seemed like for the first time.  I stared in wonder of how blessed I was.  It was a strange feeling standing there staring at my car.  Iโ€™ve owned this car since 2015.  And yet it was as though I had never really appreciated owning it.  I realized I was having a Jesus moment.

โ€œSlow down.โ€

โ€œSee what I have given you.โ€

โ€œAppreciate that you are well blessed.โ€

As I stood there listening to Him speak to me, I was opened to the fact that so many people in the world donโ€™t have such ready access to transportation.  And yet here I was with two cars, a VW bus, two motorcycles and two Vespa scooters.  All, of which, I take for granted will start when I need them, get me where I need to go, and when I need gas I can stop any number of places and pay for it.   I just stood there in amazement.  And in thankfulness.

An ordinary day made amazing with a whisper from Jesus.

Living Amazed

From the first day of Earth to today, God has been doing amazing things in our lives. And when Jesus preached and performed miracles, the Bible frequently says the people were amazed. Each day we get up to start a new day. Each day we put our feet on the floor, have breakfast, brush our teeth, and then go about our daily routine. We do the laundry, wash the dishes, log in another long day at work. It’s so easy to live in the humdrum of every day. But God is still doing amazing things!

I’ve spent much of my adult life being a pessimist. As I grew closer to Jesus it became almost impossible to continue looking at life, people and circumstances constantly from a negative point of view. God transformed me. And that, my friends, is pretty darn amazing.

Join me and my special guest writer as we explore all the amazing acts of Jesus starting November 1 through 29. My hope is that each day we will help you take these amazing Jesus acts and translate them into your amazing life.

When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching

Wheat or Chaff

Before I sat down to write this final word on the Book of James, I re-read through the five chapters and my highlighted notes.ย ย What struck me was how perfectly Jamesโ€™ words speak to the state of our current world.ย ย In February 2020, as news of the Covid19 virus started coming in from around the world we didnโ€™t think too much about it.ย ย Another type of flu, meh.ย ย And suddenly March was upon us.ย ย Our lives were shutdown.ย ย Justified or not, our businesses closed, so many allowed fear to grip them into locking themselves in their homes, we ran out of toilet paper, our churches stopped welcoming us into their doors, and we watched rioters burn down cities.ย ย Some of us turned away from God and others of us ran toward Him.

I told my husband the other day how amazingly well spoken the disciples were.ย ย I think the tendency to think back to โ€œancient timesโ€ may lead us to think they werenโ€™t as smart as us because we value โ€œknowledgeโ€ over โ€œwisdom.โ€ย ย In this short five-chapter letter, Jamesโ€™ gifts shine through.ย ย He is eloquent when using the metaphors of ships and rudders and forest fires and small sparks when speaking of our waggling and dangerous tongues.ย ย He turns into a great debater when providing facts about not showing favoritism and how the famed among us are typically the ones who take advantage of us.ย ย He is a fiery preacher when scolding us to submit and resist the devil.ย ย And a faithful servant reminding us to reach out to God for any and all needs.

I read an introduction to a Bible study on James once that said, โ€œUnlike most books of the New Testament, the letter of James is best known for the people who donโ€™t like it. People like love.ย ย They like Christ.ย ย They donโ€™t like James.โ€ย ย But isnโ€™t that the very reason this letter needed to be written?ย ย Before we are thrown into a crisis like the year 2020, before we face off with the devil, before we walk out the door to deal with unhappy, non-believers, James wants to shake us awake.ย ย To give us the tools to stand firm in the face of adversity.ย ย To be Godโ€™s faithful lights for the world.ย ย When I read James, I think of this letter as one for us everyday people.ย ย Itโ€™s a workshop full of concrete โ€œhow toโ€™s.โ€ย ย Thereโ€™s nothing wishy washy or confusing about James.

James is a “how to” book for us all

In the midst of the trials of the last few months, how many of us have considered it โ€œpure joy?โ€  (James 1:2) When out for our evening walk the other day, I told my husband how much I have appreciated what has happened.  It forced me to slow down and stop fretting over filling up my daily schedule.  My house got really clean.  We turned to each other for loving support more than ever.  We became a team and God was our head coach.  Iโ€™ve been blessed to spend more time with a particular friend than I wouldnโ€™t normally as she goes through a divorce.  My BSGs (Bible study girls) started meeting in January.  Two of whom I only slightly knew.  We are now prayer warriors for each other.  I asked my husband what positive things have come out of this for him โ€“ in the face of a very difficult work situation.  He said heโ€™s realized who he can really rely on.

Iโ€™ve learned how to be humble.ย ย Iโ€™ve learned to listen to people who have fears that I donโ€™t have and show them grace.ย ย That person driving alone in their car with a full double breather mask pushes me to pray for them to find peace rather than make fun of them.ย ย Because that is what the Word tells us (James 1:23).

The destruction caused by favoritism, hating our neighbor, people lacking in mercy and those living in greed fills our daily news.  People wanting to burn small businesses because they feel their needs are greater. Rioters standing with bullhorns yelling all night into homes because their view of the world comes first.  Employees and businesses โ€œgaming the systemโ€ to get more of the money distributed to help those struggling makes me want to cry. And, I can still picture a couple at Home Depot filling their pick-up truck to its fullest with toilet paper and laughing about it.  (James 2:8, 13, 3:16, 4:17, 5:2).

And if we looked hard enough, we saw churches helping their communities by doing food drives and people volunteering to help at Food Banks.ย ย We saw neighbors supporting each other.ย ย We saw churches fighting to stay open and serve their flocks.ย ย I saw people like Christian worship leader Sean Feucht gathering people by the 100s to pray and worship God outside โ€“ at parks, at beaches, on the streets. I saw friends get on their knees and fully surrender to God. (James 2:8, 14,4:7, 5:19)

In the United States, we are going through an important presidential election.ย ย Iโ€™ve stood at street corners supporting a candidate while the opposing side hurls hatred and curse words at me.ย ย All the while they hold signs telling me to have more compassion and to love certain races.ย ย (James 3:9).ย ย Iโ€™ve watched candidate debates where the lies are piled up not only by the candidate but by the debate moderator and then by the media.ย ย All in order to disguise the true platform of the candidate.ย ย Their yes has not meant yes and their no has not meant no. (James 5:12)

Iโ€™ve said to others that this time seems unprecedent.ย ย And this letter of James seems very prescient.ย ย There is a sifting going on.ย ย Have we chosen to surrender and submit to God?ย ย (James 4:7). Have we thrown up all our worries, our hurts, our sins to God or are we taking them out on others?ย ย (James 5:13-16) Are we working to build up our brothers and sisters in Christ or are we fighting with them?ย ย (James 5:19)

Will we finally surrender it all to God?

James makes it clear, without a lot of flowery prose, as to the destruction we humans can wrought without our eyes firmly on God.ย ย The question is, will we listen and do or will we deceive ourselves?

Thank you for joining me on this journey through James.ย ย I look forward to you joining me with my next series called, โ€œLiving Amazed through Jesusโ€ beginning November 1.ย

Yes, No, Kinda

As I sit here typing I am enjoying the sounds of my neighborโ€™s roof being ripped apart by workers.  Yes, enjoying.  You see my new neighbors moved in about two months ago.  And then they moved out.  I havenโ€™t seen them much over the two months because they had their flooring all re-done.  And then re-done.  The person they originally hired to install their beautiful reclaimed wood floors did a horrible job โ€“ when he showed up.  So, they had to fire him and hire a new installer.  And now the roof.  Theyโ€™ve been told for weeks the new roof would be installed any day.  Last week they were told it would be on Thursday.  Then Friday.  Then Monday.  So today the roofers finally arrived.  I like my new neighbors and I know how frustrating this has been for them.  So yes, Iโ€™m enjoying the noise knowing the work has finally started.   It seems that there are so few people and companies we can actually rely on today who make their โ€œyesโ€ mean โ€œyes.โ€  It may sound harsh, but when we donโ€™t make our โ€œyesโ€ mean โ€œyesโ€ and our โ€œnoโ€ mean โ€œnoโ€ thatโ€™s called lying.

Above all, do not swear โ€“ not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple โ€œyesโ€ or no.โ€ย

James 5:12

I watched an interesting video interaction once where a pastor went up to people and asked if they sinned and had broken the 10 commandments.ย ย They all said, โ€œno.โ€ย ย Then he started asking them questions.ย ย โ€œHave you ever taken a pen from your work?โ€ Thatโ€™s stealing.ย ย โ€œHave you ever โ€˜swore to Godโ€™ you would do something for someone and you didnโ€™t?โ€ย ย Thatโ€™s taking Godโ€™s name in vain.ย ย And on and on.ย ย It was fascinating to watch the faces of the people change.ย ย They looked humbled.

The Bible is big on trustworthiness.ย ย Godโ€™s covenant with us is His way of setting this concept in the forefront.ย ย He is trustworthy.ย ย He is the God of yesterday, today and tomorrow.ย ย He is the Rock we can trust will be with us in times of trouble.ย ย And He asks us to work on being trustworthy with our promises. When we are asked by a friend not to reveal something told in confidence, we arenโ€™t to go into that decision lightly.ย ย With Godโ€™s wisdom by our side we give our โ€œyesโ€ or our โ€œno.โ€ย ย And we stick by it.ย ย We donโ€™t need to swear it.ย ย We just need to mean it.

โ€œA gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.โ€

Proverb 11:13

I was a PTA president at my daughtersโ€™ elementary school for two years.ย ย I frequently asked people to help on projects or events.ย ย I appreciated those who would say โ€œnoโ€ and not be squirmy about it.ย ย I, of course, really appreciated the people who gave me an eager โ€œyesโ€ and meant it.ย ย The people I had the most issue with were those that said โ€œyesโ€ and then wouldnโ€™t show up, wouldnโ€™t do the work, or gave a half-hearted effort.ย ย They would swear they wanted to help. Itโ€™s those people that I felt had they said no, I wouldโ€™ve been better off.ย ย

If he is a true man and has plainly said, โ€œI will,โ€ you have him in your hand.ย ย He was free before giving it but not free after.

Charles Spurgeon

What if we all thought that way when we gave our decisions?ย ย Before we answer, we are fully free to pick whichever we wish.ย ย But once we say โ€œI willโ€ we are fully committed.ย ย Yes, circumstances arise that may be difficult to follow through โ€“ a late order from another company, the weather, an illness, something breaks down โ€“ but knowing we have made that commitment we will move heaven and earth to fulfill that obligation.ย ย We all have experienced situations where a person or company fails in their obligation.ย ย ย It is their reaction to that failure that we most respond to.ย ย Are they willing to make up for the failure?ย ย Are they contrite? Or do you get a โ€œwhateverโ€ response?ย ย We will determine then if they are trustworthy or not.

When we enter into that covenant with another person by giving our โ€œyesโ€ we need to be sure we arenโ€™t impetuous.ย ย Are we making that decision to impress others or even to impress God?ย ย I was involved with a woman through Girl Scouts and PTA for many years who volunteered for everything.ย ย People on the outside thought she was amazing!ย ย Her name was on all the volunteer lists.ย ย The only problem was she never actually followed through and completed the tasks.ย ย

โ€œIf you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you wonโ€™t be honest with greater responsibilities.ย

Luke 16:1-

Thatโ€™s Jesus talking.ย ย And heโ€™s not just talking about following through with commitments we make and being honest.ย ย Heโ€™s also talking about saying โ€œnoโ€ to things we need to say โ€œnoโ€ to.ย ย When we are tempted to do wrong, we need to just say a firm โ€œno.โ€ย ย When we are asked to take on a task and have prayed about it and God tells us โ€œno,โ€ we need to say the same to the asker.ย ย Not โ€œmaybe.โ€ย ย Not, โ€œpossibly.โ€ย ย Not, โ€œIโ€™ll see.โ€ย ย We donโ€™t need some long explanation.ย ย With His wisdom tucked firmly in our back pocket to be used at a momentโ€™s notice, we can be firm on our โ€œno.โ€ย ย Sometimes itโ€™s difficult to decide which way to turn.ย ย If only we had the breastplate described in Exodus 28:15

Fashion a breastpiece for making decisionsโ€”the work of skilled hands. Make it like the ephod: of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen.

Exodus 28:15

Included on the tunic was a pocket with a black and a white stone.ย ย When a big decision needed to be made, the faith leader would reach in and pull out the stone.ย ย Black for no and white for yes.ย ย It reminds me of those Magic 8 Balls.ย ย Although those always seemed stuck on โ€œMaybe.โ€

In my post on patience I listed the reasons you should have patience.ย ย One of those was for better decision-making.ย ย When we arenโ€™t emotional and stressed, we can think through a decision much clearer.ย ย As a Christian we have the power of prayer.ย ย We have the Word of God.ย ย How many of us, when faced with a big decision turn to both of these?ย ย And wait for an answer?ย ย I used to volunteer for anything thrown my way.ย ย Part of it was out of pride โ€“ thinking how great it was to be asked.ย ย Another part was needing to always be โ€œdoing something.โ€ย ย After I volunteered THEN I would ask God to work it out.ย ย Yes, a bit backwards.ย ย

I learned a long time ago at my first professional, career job that, when making especially difficult or controversial decisions, I wanted to align those decisions with my boss.ย ย That way I knew if issues came up, I was supported.ย ย That thinking has served me well throughout my working career.ย ย And when I finally applied that same concept to the rest of my life it made giving my โ€œyesโ€ and my โ€œnoโ€ much easier.ย ย God is my boss.ย ย When I align my decisions with His Word, I am strengthened by the promises He has made.ย ย I know He is working all things for my good.

But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.

Patience, Grasshopper

Iโ€™ve told my friends that looking back over my life so far, I really have only one regret.ย ย Itโ€™s that I wish I had a closer relationship with Jesus when I was the parent of young kids.ย ย My husband and I attended church fairly regularly.ย ย But I was wrapped up in childrearing worries and stresses and didnโ€™t know how to turn all that over to God.ย ย ย I couldโ€™ve enjoyed many more hours of sleep had I not been such a โ€œwoulda, coulda, shouldaโ€ person.ย ย I found myself, during a very long season of self-doubt about my parenting skills, constantly praying for patience.ย ย Literally praying every single night for about two years for patience.ย ย You see, I was so afraid of turning into my mother โ€“ screaming at my kids and losing control โ€“ that I thought patience was the answer.ย ย One Sunday, our pastorโ€™s sermon was about praying.ย ย He said, โ€œIf you keep praying about the same problem over and over and over maybe itโ€™s time to start praying for something different.โ€ย ย ย He had a knack for speaking on issues near and dear to me.ย ย ย So that night I stopped praying for patience and instead prayed for ways to help me deal with difficult situations.

As Iโ€™ve grown closer to Jesus, He has taught me a lot of lessons.  Heโ€™s still teaching me.  And step-by-step He has moved me closer to my original plea for patience.  You see, I wasnโ€™t ready to learn the hard stuff yet.  He just wanted me to start turning to Him when I was in need, when I was broken.  Patience may be a virtue but it is a heck of a hard thing to have and use regularly.

You, too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lordโ€™s coming is near.โ€

James 5:8

I first needed to learn what standing firm, standing safely in Godโ€™s arms even meant.ย ย I didnโ€™t have the wisdom needed to grasp the joy in hearing that the Lord is coming near.ย ย I heard on a Joyce Meyerโ€™s podcast this morning that God gives us a lot of leeway and grace when we first become Christians.ย ย But once we hear the Word and gain His wisdom, expectations change.ย ย We are expected to act as His children, not as children of this world.ย ย Think about that.ย ย Every time we attend church, do a Bible study, listen to a Christian podcast, see a Christian post on social media we are hearing His Word.ย ย We are learning the nature and expectations of God.ย ย And He expects us to live as He prescribes.

A personโ€™s wisdom yields patience; it is the oneโ€™s glory to overlook offense.

Proverbs 19:11

Wisdom that we glean from God yields patience.ย ย And when we are patient, that glorifies what we have learned from God.ย ย We cannot be steeped in the nature of God without also knowing and acting in patience.ย ย Why?ย Because patience means love.ย ย It means grace.ย ย It means forgiveness.ย ย Thank God He is patient with us.ย ย I never feel God rushes me to learn a lesson.ย ย In fact, my lesson in patience has taken about 26 years.

I looked up on-line โ€œhow to be patient.โ€  I came across a website that focuses on self -improvement.  Hereโ€™s their reasons why we should learn patience.

  1. We make better decisions by assessing situations rather than going in emotional and blind.
  2. We have less stress by understanding some things take longer than others.
  3. Our relationships are improved because we are more flexible and understanding.

Doesnโ€™t that all sound like something God would want from us?  Being wise, giving our stress up to God, and loving and being grace-filled toward others.

They then described a 6-step process for learning patience:

  1. Understand and counteract triggers
  2. Increase your self-confidence
  3. Put on your โ€œpositive glassesโ€
  4. Change your attitude โ€“ โ€œwhy are you in such a hurry?โ€
  5. Visualize worst case scenarios
  6. Release tension and stress through eating right, exercise, enjoying activities

Now imaging trying to do all that without God.ย ย Hereโ€™s my Christian re-do of these six steps:

  • Pray for God to reveal the areas where you struggle with patience (sometimes we pretend we arenโ€™t being impatient and justify our actions)ย

John 16:24, โ€œUntil now you have not asked for anything in my name.  Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.โ€

  • Recognize that God loves you.ย ย Accept He wants the very best for you.ย ย

John 16:27, โ€œNo, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.โ€

  • Remember that joy can be found in trials.ย ย And most of all that God has delivered for you in the past.ย ย He is faithful.ย

2 Thes 3:3, โ€œBut the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.โ€

  • Rejoice each and every day, if not every hour, for all the great things in your life.ย ย

Prov 17:22, โ€œA cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.โ€

  • To be honest, visualizing worst case scenarios has been helpful to me.ย ย If Iโ€™m waiting in a long line at Costco and start getting impatient I think, โ€œWell, what have I got to be impatient for anyways?โ€ or โ€œWell, if Iโ€™m late because of this line I can call ahead and let them know.โ€ย ย

Matt 6:27, โ€œCan anyone of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?โ€

  • Yes, eat right, exercise, enjoy new and old activities.ย ย And pray.ย ย And pray.ย ย And pray.ย ย Give up all those thoughts, those worries, those fears, those negative emotions to God.ย ย Cry out to Jesus and ask Him to remove whatever negative thought you have right then.ย

1 Samuel 2:1, โ€œMy heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high.  My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance.โ€

When we get closer to God โ€“ become fluent in His character โ€“ that is when He can work His ways in us.  And God is always patient with us.  My friend and I were having lunch today and she said she is starting to have more moments in her difficult life where she looks up and gives a little smile โ€“ recognizing those growth moments God has put in front of her.  As for me, I described for her my process of writing and how I study the topic, pray, and then start writing.  I rarely stop writing one of these posts until I am done.  The words just come out of me onto the computer.  My whole body is focused on getting these words down.  I told her how weird it was that I was interrupted multiple times while writing this post.  And as I drove home from lunch, I was listening to a praise song and it hit me.  Patience.  The topic of this post.  And I had just been tested.  I was not annoyed about the interruptions.  I felt blessed hearing from a few friends.  And normally I wouldโ€™ve been distracted during lunch, thinking about what else I needed to write.  I wouldโ€™ve failed my friend who I need to support during this time in her life.

I called my friend from my car and said, โ€œI just got it!ย ย Patience!ย ย I was tested!โ€ย ย And she said, โ€œI realized that while you were telling me.ย ย And Iโ€™m glad it finally came to you.โ€ย ย Maybe this whole actually studying Godโ€™s Word really does work.ย ย Time to look up and smile.

Heart Lessons

Before I became a Christian and even when I was a โ€œbaby Christianโ€ Iโ€™d hear a lot of phrases from the Bible thrown about by believers and non-believers.ย ย Passages such as โ€œjudge not, lest you be judgedโ€ (Matt 7:1) and โ€œI can do all things through Him who strengthens meโ€ (Phil 4:13) are frequently taken out of context and misused.ย ย And then thereโ€™s the quotes that arenโ€™t even in the Bible such as, โ€œGod helps those who help themselves,โ€ โ€œGod will never give you more than you can handle,โ€ and โ€œLove the sinner, hate the sin.โ€ย ย While all those sound good, we must always be careful not to put words in Godโ€™s mouth.ย ย Along with all of these I think one of the most misunderstood concepts people have is about being wealthy.ย ย Non-believers will use this against successful Christians.ย ย And believers sometimes think having wealth is a sin.ย ย When Jesus said,

โ€œHow hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!ย ย Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.โ€

Luke 18:24

This was in response to asking a wealthy ruler to give up all his power and wealth and come follow Him.ย ย The ruler was very sad because he was very wealthy and he wasn’t all that honest.ย ย Itโ€™s necessary to know that no one is saved by giving up all their wealth.ย ย What Jesus was really asking of the ruler was to be honest about what he coveted.ย ย There was much more going on in this story than a man being told to give up his wealth to follow Jesus.ย ย This is why I keep hearing over and over these days to not just read the Bible but to study it.ย ย Take, for instance, this famous poem by William Wadsworth:

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high oโ€™er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze โ€ฆ

I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud

If we were to just read it for what it basically says we would think he was a lonely man who thought he was a cloud.ย ย And when he saw some flowers he thought they were actually dancing.ย ย Sounds like someone on drugs.ย ย But when we study the poem, we find a beautiful short tale about a man who loves nature and finds joy whenever he sees daffodils. Therein lies the need for great Biblical teachers and pastors.ย

As we explore the last chapter of James, we find him being very angry with the wealthy members of the church.ย ย Not because they are wealthy, but just like the ruler Jesus admonished, they have turned their wealth into their god.ย ย They have cheated and lied all in the name of increasing their wealth.ย ย How many of us today covet our bank account in lieu of helping those in need?ย ย As an American, even our poorest are considered wealthy in relation to other countries.ย ย Just having a home, a steady job, owning one or two cars, having three meals a day, a closet full of clothes, a tv and more, far and away exceed what others have.ย ย And none of that is wrong.ย ย James condemns the wrong use of riches โ€“ using wealth as a weapon rather than a tool to build others up.ย ย Iโ€™ve heard so many people over the years actually worry that Jesus will ask them to give up all their money and become a poor missionary.ย ย I say, if thatโ€™s truly what you are worried about then be careful, that just might be what God asks you to do!ย ย

How many times have you heard people say they’re worried God will ask them to be another ‘Mother Teresa?”

James doesnโ€™t stop there.  Our lack of patience, our lies (both little and big), our lazy prayer life, and our lack of desire to help our fellow Christians grow and be their best in the eyes of Christ, are all on display this week in James 5.

If we arenโ€™t careful so much of James can turn into one of those misused verses or phrases.ย ย If we remember two things as we work on the final week of this study let them be this: 1) it is always about what is in our heart that Jesus cares about and 2) thankfully we are given grace each and every time we confess that we have forgotten the first.
