Trusting the Goodness of God

โ€œOh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind!โ€ Psalm 31:19

โ€œEvery good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.โ€  James 1:17

During the last few years, a recurring topic with my Bible Study Girls revolves around sharing the gospel with our kids and grandkids.  More so with our grandkids because all of our children grew up in the church although many didnโ€™t become believers in their adulthood.  We fear overstepping boundaries or damaging relationships.

Recently one of my friends shared a discussion about God with her adult granddaughter.  The younger woman stated, โ€œHow can I believe in a God that allows so much evil?โ€  At the time, my friend was unsure of how to respond to this question โ€“ one which many of us may have also been asked.

Origins of Good vs. Evil

Now, we can go down a deep C.S. Lewis-type philosophical hole (which if you want to, then read his Mere Christianity) but in this blog Iโ€™ll be short and sweet.  God is good.  He is the essence of good.  He created good and all things He created are good.  He did not create evil.  Evil is the absence of good.  Lewis tells us that you can have good without evil, but you cannot have evil without good.  Why?  Because without good you wouldnโ€™t actually know that evil is well, evil. It just is.  Evil is not something God created; it is the absence of goodโ€”much like darkness is the absence of light. Where Godโ€™s goodness is rejected, brokenness naturally follows.

I like to ask people this question in return: โ€œIf everyone believed in the Christian God and followed His precepts then how would the world look different?โ€  Of course, to be a complete answer they would need to know the truth of Godโ€™s Word.

Unfortunately, biblical knowledge is no longer what it once was in the wider culture. Most would be shocked to know that basic, accepted ethics and morals came from the Bible, not as โ€œjust basic common sense.โ€  Because we all can look around and see thereโ€™s not much of that going around anyways!

But back to Godโ€™s goodness.  When God created the garden and all that was in it, everything was โ€œgood.โ€  He also gave Adam and Eve free will to submit to God or not.  And we know how that went.  God did not create the sin.  We humans created sin by turning away from God.

God is perfectly good.  During tragic times that fact may be hard to accept.  God weeps over his creation when evil enters our hearts and minds, causing death and destruction.  When we truly believe, however, in Godโ€™s goodness we can see either in the moment or have expectation for the future that everything does work out for the good of those who believe (Romans 8:28).

See Him In Hard Seasons

This truth became deeply personal for me during one of the hardest seasons of my life.Four years ago, when my mother-in-law was dying from cancer, I struggled with anger toward God. But when I remembered that God is good, my perspective changed. God was calling her home to eternal rest. My grief was real, but trusting in His goodness helped me surrender my selfish desires to His loving plan.  Our Good God wanted to bring her home and rest in His arms for eternity.

โ€œOh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!โ€ 1 Chronicles 16:34

In this reverence series every characteristic of God is a good one.  Even when God is wrathful as we read so often in the Old Testament, it comes after years of patience and warning.  But most of all it is rooted in the desire to bring His children back on to a good and perfect path.  His love for us is truly good.

Friends, really believing that God is good and has good plans for you, and I mean really believing that, changes our outlook on life.  It brings new perspectives to bad situations.  It carries us through some of the most difficult times of our lives.  It leads us to seek out God rather than turn our backs to Him.  It causes us to see the blessings in the midst of the hardships.  Some might call that being a โ€œpositive person.โ€  As a Christian we call that being a believer.

Day 25 For All My Life

Iโ€™ll admit that for almost half of my life I relied on one person to resolve all my problems, to quell my fears, and to help me succeed in life.ย ย Myself.ย ย While I did a decent job of pulling myself up and around by my own boot straps, I also did a bang up job of living a life of stress, anxiety and worry.ย ย When I met my husband, he called me the queen of โ€œwoulda, coulda, shoulda.โ€

In other words, I would regret and worry about every single decision I made.ย ย If I โ€œfixed itโ€ and it didnโ€™t turn out very good then I was also the one to take much of the blame.ย ย I leaned heavily on my own understanding.ย ย The burden became unbearable.ย ย I put the same pressure on friends, family and acquaintances to take on the same responsibility.ย ย When they didnโ€™t, I would look on with annoyance that they werenโ€™t doing life โ€œright.โ€ย

That type of living doesnโ€™t keep quality relationships.ย ย It definitely doesnโ€™t bring joy and love and goodness.ย ย

The study I did this summer on being a slave to Christ (Slave by John MacArthur) has further revealed to me how being owned by Jesus is so much easier than being a slave to a sinful life outside His will.ย ย When we let Him take the lead and shine the light on our paths, we can take a deep breath of fresh air.ย ย We view troubles, challenges or even failures in a different light.

We may not always see our life with Christ as a straight and beautiful path of goodness.ย ย But thatโ€™s just the world trying to speak back into us.ย ย As long as we have our eyes always on Jesus it doesnโ€™t matter what seems uncertain.ย ย The North Star is always where it should be even if the road is a bit squiggly.ย ย He will guide you right to Him.

Our Lovely God

Today we bask in the glow of a Christ come to us in the form of a baby.โ€‚A baby which held the power to defeat sin in His tiny hand.โ€‚A baby that so terrified a king that he called for the deaths of all the young children in Bethlehem.โ€‚A baby that drew people of all races, creed, religion, nationality to Him for the promise of peace through all eternity.โ€ƒ

The other day I read part of a sermon by the renowned 18th century pastor, Jonathan Edwards.โ€‚He became well known for glorifying God’s beauty and magnificence throughout his lifetime in sermon after sermon.โ€‚Today I’d like to share a portion of his sermon titled, “Children Ought to Love the Lord Jesus Christ Above All” (Sermons and Discourses 1739-1742).โ€‚It seems fitting in celebration of the birth of our Savior and a lesson for us all to carry in our minds and hearts.

“Christ is so lovely that the angels in heaven adore Him.โ€‚Their hearts overflow with love for Him and they are continually, day and night without ceasing, praising Him and giving Him glory.โ€‚He is so lovely that God the Father infinitely delights in Him.

Christ is His beloved Son, the brightness of His glory, whose beauty the Father continually sees with infinite delight, without ever being weary of beholding Him.โ€‚And if the angels and God himself love Christ so much more than anyone or anything else, surely all children on earth ought to love Him above all things in this world.

Everything that is lovely in God the Father is in Jesus Christ, and everything that is lovely in any man is in Him.โ€‚For He is man as well as God, and He is the holiest, most humble, and in every way the most excellent man that ever was.โ€‚He is the true delight of heaven.

There is nothing in heaven, that glorious place, that is brighter or more lovely than Christ.โ€‚By becoming man, He was as a flower springing up out of the earth, lovelier than any seen in all this world.

There is more goodness to be enjoyed in Christ than in anything or anyone in all the world.โ€‚He is not only loving, but all sufficient for any need of humankind.โ€‚There is enough provision in His person to supply all our wants and satisfy all our desires.”โ€‚

To our God who created the glorious heavens and earth, to Him be all power and honor and majesty.โ€‚Amen

Everyday Glory

โ€œIf anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.โ€ 1 Peter 4:11

Holy Spirit, whatever decisions and choices I make today help them to be in service and glorification of God. Amen

I read an Instagram post the other day that asked this question: โ€œAre you doing what makes you happy or what glorifies God?โ€  I would venture to say on a day-to-day, hour-by-hour basis we probably lean toward what makes us happy.  Sure, when it comes to bigger more difficult decisions, we may seek Godโ€™s counsel.  But how often when we are choosing what to eat, what to do with our free time, when we go about our chores and errands, before we open the door to enter work or school do we think, whatโ€™s God say about this? What could I do in this very situation that would make God happy?  What could I say to my spouse/friend/adult child that would sound like a word from the Lord?

โ€œAs the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.โ€ Isaiah 55:9

We can take this piece of scripture and use it as a sort of โ€œoutโ€ when it comes to our everyday lives being aligned with God.  We can never know all that God is thinking so we just go about our lives as best we can, right?  That may be true if we never study scripture or pray for the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom.  Because when we do those two things, God will constantly be on our minds and lips.  He may even want that mundane day you have planned turned into something that glorifies Him.

We will never be fully satisfied with making our own choices about our lives.  It may appear that some people who have fame and fortune without God โ€œhave it all.โ€  As Christ followers we know true satisfaction, however, comes from the only constant thing in the world โ€“ God.  He knows whatโ€™s best for us.  He knows what will work in our lives to glorify the kingdom.

Friend, when we change our daily thinking to Godโ€™s plan, not ours, we will also enjoy the fruits of the spirit โ€“ peace, joy, patience, kindness, goodness and faithfulness. And that sounds a lot better than anything I mightโ€™ve planned for my day.

To God Give The Glory

โ€œYou are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.โ€ Revelation 4:11

Holy Father, Loving Jesus and Ever Present Spirit, today I will exalt you; I will praise your name forever.  Great are you, Lord!   You are worthy to give all glory and praise!  I will speak of your glorious splendor and majesty.  I will tell of the power of your wonderful works and I will celebrate your abundant goodness and proclaim your great deeds. Amen*

A few years ago, I started a prayer project.  I had no problem asking God for things to happen in my life.  I also didnโ€™t struggle with asking for forgiveness.  And I always added others to my petitions.  What I had a difficult time doing was praising God.  Not just thanking Him for what He has done for me, but praising Him for who He is.  It seemed silly and flowery.

As my faith has progressed, Iโ€™ve realized how important it is for us believers to acknowledge Godโ€™s magnificence, power and well, just plain awesomeness.  It helps to put our whole lives into perspective.  It reminds US who really is in charge.  So, I started the 30 Days of Praise series.  Eventually I went on to write 30 More Days of Praise and then 30 Days of Thanksgiving.

Recently, I kept seeing the word โ€œglorifyโ€ in the study Iโ€™m doing about the Trinity.  I started looking into the differences between praising God and giving God the glory due to Him.    I found this helpful description of praise and glory:

Praise (แผ”ฯ€ฮฑฮนฮฝฮฟฯ‚; epainos) means the excellence of a person. Glory (ฮดฯŒฮพฮฑ; doxa) means splendor and greatness. Honor (ฯ„ฮนฮผฮฎ; timeโ€™) means respect and high status or value.

Dr. Thomas Clothier

And it got me thinking how I need to up my praise game.  God isnโ€™t just excellent in the ways He shows up in my life.  He, without anything to do with me, is full of splendor and awesome in power!  Jesusโ€™ every move was to glorify the Father.  The Father loved and glorified the Son.  The Holy Spirit came to live in us to glorify Jesusโ€™ act of salvation and to continue the work of the Father.  The Trinity uses us to glorify the work of creation โ€“ itโ€™s beauty and mystery.

We glorify him when we care more about what he wants than about what we want. Even better, we glorify him when we want the same things he wants.

Peter KrolKnowable Word: Helping Ordinary People Learn to Study the Bible

Iโ€™m not sure I can fully describe the glory of God through words but Iโ€™m going to make an attempt to show how our everyday lives can be lived to give Him the glory due.  Please join me on this 30 day prayer journey of glorifying God and watch as His love for us unfolds into a beautiful story.

*This prayer was taken from parts of Psalm 145, โ€œDavidโ€™s Psalm of Praise.โ€
