She remembered that night when she laid in her bed waiting and expecting.ย ย Waiting and expecting her father to enter the room and sexually assault her, again.ย ย But as she lay there she thought, โOne day I will do something great.โย ย And great she did.ย ย In 2005, Time magazineโs โ25 Most Influential Evangelicals in Americaโ ranked her as 17th.ย ย She is known all over the world by her ministry and volunteer work.ย ย Joyce Meyer overcame constant sexual abuse as a child because of hope and faith in God.
This week we looked at just one chapter in the Book of James.ย ย Chapter one brought us front and center in how to deal with trials.ย ย He spoke of spiritual wisdom and the wise act of listening and controlling our anger.ย ย ย In just 26 sentences He stands in front of us in admonition to wake us Christians up. And show the world what trust in Jesus Christ, our savior really means.
Do not merely listen to the Word and so deceive yourselves.ย ย DO WHAT IT SAYS.
James 1:22
He goes on to say that when we leave church, after we pray each morning, or read our devotional each day we ought not to then turn out into the world and forget who we are. We are not like everyone else. Isnโt that what our parents told us when we wanted to go hang out with the โcool kids?โ There are expectations and responsibilities to accepting Christ.
When I was a โbaby Christianโ I had a conversation about church with my mom. She is the daughter of a Baptist minister. She hasnโt regularly attended church since she was a child. She doesnโt pray. She says she believes in God but anyone that knows her couldnโt tell that to be true. She told me that when she was a child at church, she would watch all the ladies attend church dutifully. And then, they would gossip, hate each other, complain endlessly to her father, lie, cheat, and all other manner of sin. My mother had and still has a dim view of โChristians.โ
When we leave the doors of church or our home we mustn’t forget who we are.
How many of us live our lives fully realizing that not only is God watching how we handle trials and temptations, but our non-Christian friends and neighbors? Do they see you getting angry and yelling and gossiping? Do they get a sense of peace from you during difficult times? Are you easy to talk to because they know you will listen without judgement? And are the words you speak back coming from a Godly place? Do you turn down offers of socializing with friends and tell them itโs because you have a Bible Study you are committed to? Have they heard you speak about your quiet time you spend with God, praying for others? Do you tell others you will pray for them and do it immediately, with them? What was the last book or movie or tv show you settled into? Was it something where you could gain wisdom of Godโs ways?
While sitting and listening to God to speak through me before I sat down to write this, the song โMy Fatherโs Houseโ started playing over and over in my head.ย ย
The Jericho Walls are quaking
Strongholds are shaking
Love is breaking through
When the Father’s in the room
Cory Asbury, The FAther’s House
When we invite God into our lives during hardship, when we seek His wisdom, when we listen for His voice, and act as He wants us to, we experience His strength and love.ย ย The shackles of sin and anger, the ugliness of self-degradation and self-centeredness give way to freedom.ย ย ย Freedom to see His beauty in resolving problems.ย ย Freedom to experience joy in even the most difficult of times.ย
James pulls no punches.ย ย But he always reminds us, in the midst of admonishment, of the โwhy.โย ย
We will develop maturity and perseverance
We receive the โcrown of lifeโ that the Lord has promised
We are given the Word of Truth so we can be โfirstfruitsโ of all God has created
We live in the righteousness that God desires for us
When we rid ourselves of immorality and accept the Word planted in us, we are saved
We are given freedom
We will be blessed in all we do
James is not asking us to do anything more than what we ask of our employees, our children or our friends.ย ย If we make a commitment, promise, accept a job, want a friendship, then we must work on it and act in such a way as to say we are all โin.โ
My challenge for this weekend it to be fully aware of our actions and words, especially while around non-Christians.ย ย Good luck, my prayers are with you.
One of my favorite types of tv shows are the ones where brave souls go in and clean out other peopleโs houses. In one show, just one room was to be completely re-done. The host would help the homeowner remove all the items from that room and put them out on their front lawn. There were three piles: Keep, Toss, Sell. Iโm a confessed tv โback talkerโ so I yell at and talk to the tv all the time. What typically happens during these shows is I yell at the homeowner saying, โWhat on earth do you need that for?โ or โThat is the ugliest chair I have ever seen! Get rid of it!โ Iโm always mystified by the amount of junk people pile up in their homes and how difficult it is for them to get rid of it all โ even under the threat of eviction or possibly social services removing their children.
Most of us look at a hoarderโs life and recognize how destructive it is. The filth, the squalor, the sheer quantity of stuff is appalling. We sit in judgement thinking, โI would never get to that point in my life.โ The truth is a hoarderโs problem isnโt with the โstuffโ itโs with their heart. Even on shows such as โBiggest Loserโ we find most contestantโs real issues lie within their hearts, itโs just that they have turned to food to fix their pain.
โTherefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the Word planted in you, which can save you.โย ย
James 1:21
Now doesnโt that sound easy?ย ย Just about as easy as a hoarder having to let go of the paper their 40 year old son wrote as a second grader. On day 1 James made it clear we would have trials and tribulations.ย ย Some of us have been physically or emotionally abused.ย ย Others have been neglected by loved ones.ย ย While others have experienced unbearable loss โ of a child, a parent, a friend, a job, a home.ย ย And there are the multitudes whose dreams and hopes have yet to materialize.ย ย And yet none of those gives us license by God to sin, to bring โmoral filthโ into our lives.
Warren Wiersbe says this about filling our lives with immorality:
โFor God to be able to use us as vessels we must be empty, clean, and available.ย ย He will take us and use us for His glory.ย ย But if we are filled with sin or defiled by disobedience, He will first have to purge us.โ
Purge us. That is the death we read about frequently in the Bible. In Matthew 16: 16, Jesus states this, โWhoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.โ We purge the world from our hearts and minds and live a life worthy of being Godโs vessel.
Some might think this means we take away freedoms, we remove fun and laughter, we become like monks or nuns.ย ย But think back to a hoarderโs house that is now cleaned out.ย ย Or even your own house after a good purging and cleaning.ย ย We breathe a sigh, put our hands on our hips and declare, this is good, this is real good.ย ย We even start imagining being able to invite our friends over for dinner, new uses for that now empty cupboard, or how easy it is to find what you need.ย ย We feel a sense of freedom, of joy, of completeness.
It may be hard work but a clean house sure feels good!
Now take that same feeling and apply it to our other actions or decisions. Do you have that same sense? When we are unforgiving, rude, vengeful, deceitful, unfaithful, untrustworthy, does that give you the same feelings of joy?
One of the reasons we might not take a stand against the filth infiltrating our lives is the fear of man.ย ย In fact, the disciple Peter was a great example of this.ย ย He talked a good talk about being faithful to Jesus and the other disciples.ย ย But when it came time to stand firm, he chose to protect himself.ย ย He was afraid of what servant girls would think or do to him if he confirmed he was a disciple.ย ย And yet, in John 18:15 the story clearly states โanother discipleโ also stood with Jesus in front of his accuser.ย ย That unnamed disciple wasnโt afraid of man.ย ย He wasnโt afraid to declare himself a follower of Jesus.ย ย What in your life do you know is wrong, is moral filth, and yet you are afraid of the people around you attacking you or judging you should you declare it would no longer be a part of your life?
Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said about constantly fighting the battle against the moral filth of the world, โWhen all is said and done the life of faith is nothing if not an unending struggle of the spirit with every weapon against the flesh.โ Meaning just like a severely overweight person who needs to battle their demons to help them lose weight, the road to cleaning our hearts and minds is constant and challenging.
Even Nelson Mandela said,
โI am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying.โ
So how do we go about this cleansing?ย ย We definitely donโt want to be like the Pharisees that Matthew admonishes in 23:25, โYou clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.โย ย Remembering that James is written to people who profess to be Christians, we need a heart and mind change, not just a physical one.
Have a conversation with God: We already know some of the areas of our life that donโt measure up to Godโs desires for us.ย ย But He may also reveal other areas that we have hidden away, possibly underlying causes for our behavior and actions.ย ย Ask Him to shine a light on your โmoral filth.โย ย Ask him to take it away.ย ย Ask him to strengthen you.ย ย Ask Him first thing in the morning to set up your day for success.ย ย Ask Him to help you as you encounter your trouble areas, thank Him for His protection.
โIn the morning Lord you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.”
Psalm 5:3
Listen to God: He speaks to us through His Word, the Holy Bible so read it and study it like any other self-help book.ย ย Write down passages that speak to your particular issues and needs.ย ย He speaks to us through other people.ย ย There are probably people in your life already telling you what areas need to be cleansed.ย ย Stop being defensive and start being thankful!ย ย God whispers to us directly and guides us.ย ย If, as youโre walking into the bar you know you shouldnโt and that voice keeps telling you to go home, then go home.ย ย Stop ignoring Him.
โI will listen to what God the lord says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants.”
Psalm 85:8
Act on His Words: We all know people whose lives are a mess.ย ย Theyโve heard the message over and over about how to fix their lives.ย ย The part thatโs missing is just doing it.ย ย When we absolutely know we shouldnโt text that person and yet do it anyway we dismiss Godโs will.ย ย The recognition that God is the most powerful, all seeing, all knowing being must be part of our lives.ย ย We canโt hide from God.ย ย We can think we are deceiving Him but we arenโt.ย ย He is our โover watch,โ โ He looks ahead and see the enemyโs position and provides us protection.ย ย But if we choose to take a different path we put ourselves in danger.
โTurn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever.โ
Psalm 37:27
What is distracting you or holding you back from fully following Christ?ย ย What rooms in your life need to be purged and left clean?ย ย Ask God for his loving spotlight to shine in every recessed area.ย ย Listen for His guidance.ย ย And walk with faith and strength knowing He is guiding you.
What is an area that you are struggling with the most when it comes to following Christ?
My friend Andrea and I walk our dogs every week together. I typically have my dog on an โe-leashโ so Iโm very careful to make sure people around me know I have complete control over my dog when it appears he is off leash. We decided to take a new neighborhood route one day. As we passed one house my dog stopped to sniff a small sign at the edge of the grass. It said, โKeep Dogs Off Grass.โ I gave my dog the command to heel and he quickly took up the short distance between us. The homeowner bolted from the far side of his car and commenced yelling at us. โGet your dog off my grass!โ We were both taken aback at his aggressiveness. My first response was to get my hackles up and yell back, โHe wasnโt on your grass.โ Andrea, in a nicer tone, confirmed this to the owner. But he wouldnโt let up. He yelled at us as we walked by. And I yelled back. The war had commenced. Salvos were lobbed. In the midst, Andrea became the peacemaker. She had the peace of mind to realize this was not the hill to die on today. She started saying, โOk sir, have a nice day.โ He continued to yell at us while we were about 4 houses away. My anger was apparent. And I realized I had failed gloriously that morningโs first test.
Jamesโ admonishment sounds so simple. ย ย And yet I would guess amongst millions of Christians our failure rate in accomplishing this is fairly high.ย
โEverybody should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.โ
James 1:19-20.
Think of how much those millions of Christians could change the world if we accomplished just this one act.ย Proverbs 16:32 says, โBetter a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.โย ย Now, being of warrior spirit I struggle with this.ย ย But I realized the ingredient that makes a difference โ anger.ย ย When God sent out Joshua to take cities he didnโt tell him to do so in anger.ย ย In fact, many of the actions he directed him to take were strangely non-warrior like such as marching around cities in circles and blowing horns.ย ย
Ephesians 4:26 says, โIn your anger do not sin; Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.โย ย God knows we get mad.ย ย But he also tells us to be careful and not also take that anger and sin.ย ย When Jesus cleansed the synagogues of โthievesโ he was more sad than angry.ย ย He wept to see what Israel had become.ย ย Think of the destruction and affliction Jesus could have wrought on everyone!ย ย But instead He cursed a tree.ย ย If Jesus โ the most powerful being to grace the earth — could restrain himself canโt we tamp down our anger at the grocery store clerk for taking a bit too long?ย ย Or the person who doesnโt immediately bolt forward at the green light?ย ย All the while our cross necklace dangles around our neck.
But letโs back up a bit. James first tells us to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Proverbs 18:13 says, โTo answer before listening โ that is folly and shame.โ How many of us, while someone is talking to us, are working on our own story or rebuttal in our head as that person speaks? What we miss are opportunities.
#1 Opportunity to Show Empathy
We can tell when someone is really listening to us.ย ย Itโs called active listening.ย ย According to Mat Apodaca in his article, โHow to Practice Active Listening,โ active listening involves using many of our senses.ย ย It means giving your full attention.ย ย You need to show the other person with your body language that you are truly listening.ย ย He says doing this builds mutual trust, it boosts self-confidence, we have less miscommunication, have fewer arguments, and are more productive.ย ย Hereโs his steps to active listening:
Maintain eye contact
Donโt fidget
No interrupting
Watch for non-verbal clues
Restate and clarify
Use some encouraging words such as, โand then?โ
Probe for more information
But keep your talking minimal
Validate
I had invited a friend out to lunch awhile back.ย ย I wanted to try and recover our relationship.ย ย We had grown apart in various ways and it had come to a head with some back and forth justifying of our hurts.ย ย As we sat across from each other I looked for ways to bridge our gaps.ย ย Topics we could both agree on.ย ย But the entire time she kept looking down at her phone that rested in her lap.ย ย She murmured responses.ย ย I finally asked her if something important was going on that she needed to keep reading her phone.ย ย Her two younger children, around ages 15 and 13 were at home.ย ย They were bickering and sending her text messages.ย ย No one was dying.ย ย No one was hurt.ย ย I realized she not only wasnโt interested in the conversation, she wasnโt interested in our relationship.ย
How many times have you done this to others?
#2 Opportunity to Hear from God
When we find ourselves listening to people who are angry, hurt, sad, or fearful we so often want to help.ย ย We might share our own past situations or try to convince that person to think or feel differently.ย ย But we always end up coming from our own view of the situation.ย ย Our wheels are whirling for solutions to their problems, or how to get them to stop being angry at us.ย ย With all that jumbled up thinking going on itโs awfully difficult for the one true voice to be heard.ย ย God can see all solutions.ย ย He knows exactly what to say, and more importantly what not to say. Charles Spurgeon says about praying continuously: โWe need to have such confidence about our prayer life that prayer becomes like breathing, effortless, that we do it every moment we are alive.โ
How many times have you left a conversation and later thought, โOh, if only I had thought of that then!โ When we are actively listening, we can be more like a super highway. Sending your friendโs, spouseโs, childโs, co-workerโs, strangerโs, words straight up to God. Acting as more of a conduit for Godโs instruction, rather than the encyclopedia of all things of how to do (fill in the blank) right. You might just hear God remind us of Jesusโ words:
โBut to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.โ
Luke 6:27
Had I been listening to the angry neighbor I would have heard a few things: 1) He has had issues with dogs on his grass.ย ย 2) He really loves his grass, a lot.ย ย 3) Love himย
Before we build fences let’s first listen to each other and God
#3 Opportunity to Find A New Solution
You really cannot have a relationship with someone you donโt listen to. That includes God. If we want to transform our relationships, we need to hear what people and God are saying. Ecclesiastes 5: 1-2 says:
โGuard your steps when you go to the house of God.ย ย Go near to listen rather than to offer sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.ย ย Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God.โ
When we offer up our own solutions, based on our own limited thoughts, they are made within a small framework. But God knows all and sees all solutions. We so frequently want to hear our own plans and arguments because we still want to control everything โ even God.
In 2 Chronicles 20, the ruler Jehoshaphat was faced with destruction by the Moabites and Ammonites.ย ย He gathered up various advisors to discuss solutions.ย ย You can only imagine the various types around the tent.ย ย The warrior, demanding they strike first.ย ย The appeaser, begging for them to send out an ambassador to beg for mercy.ย ย The fearful, worried they were all going to die.ย ย But verse 3 says, โAlarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord.โย ย He resolved.ย ย He made a conscious decision, after listening to everyone to then listen to God.ย ย And God came up with a solution that not one of those in attendance had even dreamed.ย ย To not fight, but instead to take up their battle positions, standing firm and have faith in God.ย ย The king then appointed men to sing.ย ย Yes, sing.ย ย And they watched God destroy the enemy.
It is our faith that God loves us — God wants the best for us that we must first rest upon.ย ย With that as our anchor we can know when we actively listen we show the same love and empathy we receive from God.ย ย When we are slow to speak it is because we are listening for Godโs voice to channel through us.ย ย And when we keep our anger in check we honor the God that thankfully does not condemn us each time we fail.
When was there a time that you either realized you had failed gloriously at this lesson or when you were successful?ย ย How did you feel after?
They kept begging me to run for PTA president.ย ย Having served on a PTA nominating committee I know how difficult it can be to fill two key positions โ president and treasurer.ย ย At least the treasurer can hide from people, but the president must stand in front of rooms filled with either at best bored or at worst annoyed parents.ย ย My children attended an elementary school with almost 1,300 students K-5.ย ย We put on large community events.ย ย And our parents and teachers were very demanding.ย ย On top of this, our school was about to go through a few major changes.ย ย I told them โno.โย ย Actually, what I told them was: โYou donโt want me to be your president.ย ย You wonโt like how I will clean up the โold boysโ way of doing things.โย ย ย But they kept asking.ย
Eventually I caved. I recall clearly after I said yes, I finally prayed for the first time. โLord, help this not to have been a mistake.โ I did that a lot many years ago. You know, make a decision and then beg God to make it turn out ok. Iโm pretty sure King Solomon didnโt write a proverb saying, โDecide, then pray for your will be done.โ
I should’ve watched Harper Valley PTA before I said, “Yes.
As I moved along on my Christian spiritual growth chart, I realized that order of things was a bit backward.ย ย With each switching up of the order of prayer vs. action, I was getting closer to the concept in Ephesians 5: 15-16, โBe careful then, how you live โ not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity.ย
James 1: 5-8 challenges believers to wise decision making. He gives us the action we must take (asking God for wisdom) and the result of not accepting and acting on that wisdom (double mindedness).
โโIf any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you; But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.โ
James 1: 5-8
You see, had I prayed to God in the midst of being asked to take on such a large role as PTA president I wouldโve acted in Godโs name, not mine. If he told me to do it, I would know I had His strength to aid me in difficult times because it was His will not mine. If I was told to not do it then I wouldโve been able to clearly and confidently say, โno thank you.โ And importantly โ not feel guilty about it.
There are two ways to seek wisdom โ spiritually and earthly. While we can take both paths together, if we only use earthly knowledge, we live without an anchor to truly define what is โrightโ and โgood.โ That is the Humanistsโ approach. They make decisions more based on what feels right or good or what society deems worthy or correct. But God is immovable. His Word never changes. When we use that as a touchstone for our lives, we know we start our wisdom journey on solid ground. God has all the solutions — while we can usually only see them in a narrow, protective framework.
Charles Spurgeon once said, โHow foolish would the believer be who would lay up his treasure anywhere except heaven?โย ย In other words, you only have one life to live.ย ย ย Itโs precious and what you create, such as children, are precious.ย ย Why would you ask the world how to live your life, raise your kids, invest your money, use your time, instead of God?ย ย ย He went on to say, โChange is written on the forehead of nature so donโt put your trust in earthly things.โย ย This reminded me of a friend I had at an old job.ย ย She had her kids in the 1970s.ย ย With her first child she was told by the nurses to absolutely not breastfeed her child.ย ย It was imperative that women not be tied down to a child and instead be free to do whatever she pleased.ย ย When her second child came along the winds had shifted.ย ย She was encouraged to breastfeed.ย ย She cried as she told me what she realized she missed out on with her first child โ the bonding and loving moments breastfeeding affords.ย ย She was angry she had let a nurse decide for her what was right and good.ย
Warren Wiersbe defines God-given wisdom this way, โWisdom keeps us in harmony with the principals and purposes that the Lord has built into His world so that as we obey God, everything works for us and not against us.โ I donโt know about you but Iโd like to know more about how to get things to work for me and not against me!
Step 1 for gaining that sort of wisdom โ praying.
But not just any praying.ย ย Praying for His will to be done, not ours.ย ย Praying for wisdom and good discernment means asking God to light the way for us.ย ย He alone knows ALL the possible solutions and outcomes.ย ย We can only know a limited number of solutions, based on our limited knowledge and emotions.ย ย We canโt possibly know the outcomes.ย ย When we pray to God for our will we need to be careful He might just give us what we keep asking for โ and that can frequently be exactly what we donโt need.ย ย God tailors our teaching based on where we are in our spiritual growth.ย ย He might give us a little leeway or He might admonish us.ย ย But we will definitely learn a lesson if we listen and pay attention.
Step 2 in our wisdom growth is listening.
James 1: 19 says, โMy dear brothers and sisters, take note of this, we should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.โ After weโve prayed, we need to shut up and listen. He will speak to you. But if we keep yammering on to him, our friends, people we donโt even know on social media, we will assuredly miss His voice. We need to be like Jesus โ slow down and hear from God. Instead we frequently start worrying and researching and talking and fretting and more worrying. In my study group we asked the question: โWhat are some challenges that come with obeying the promptings of the Holy Spirit?โ We all agreed that discerning whether it is God or our own voice (or worse, Satan) speaking is the greatest challenge. The solution is knowing the character of God. Thankfully, thereโs a complete autobiography about God at our fingertips โ the Bible.
Step 3 is reading His word.
Iโve heard people call Christians โsheep.โย ย The assumption is that we donโt need to think for ourselves once we turn our lives over to Christ.ย ย But we donโt put our minds on a shelf and stop thinking.ย ย In fact, we must turn our lives to more active thinking and discernment when we become Christians.ย ย One of my BSGs (Bible Study Girls) and I were talking the other day and she told me she was glad the Bible can be read at different understanding levels.ย ย She says she has always had a more difficult time delving deeper and between the lines โ not just when it comes to reading the Bible but any literature.ย ย She appreciates those of us that have that skill.ย ย That is the beauty of the Bible and Godโs gifts.ย ย One friend of mine sent out a text that said, โThe Bible is the only book that as you read it, it reads you.โย ย Amen to that!ย
There are a few books in the Bible considered โwisdom booksโ but the most recognizable is Proverbs. The words โwiseโ or โwisdomโ are used 125 in this book. Its wise words are made to be memorized since the people of that time didnโt have access to books. One liners can be easily remembered such as:
โThose who forsake instruction praise the wicked, but those who heed it, resist them.โ 28:4
โWhoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed without remedy.โ 29:1
โBetter to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.โ 21:9
โBetter a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting and strife.โ 17:1
Then thereโs longer, deeper instruction such as Proverb 1: 32-33
โFor the waywardness of the simple will kill them and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me (wisdom/God) will live in safety and be at ease without fear or harm.โ
And Proverb 3:5-6: โTrust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all ways submit to Him and he will make your path straight.โ
I wish I had read that one before deciding to be a PTA president. From day 1 the bickering and strife and lies and hurts I faced were almost unbearable. I cried to the Lord for help. His help came in the form of wisdom โ how to pray first, listen second, and read His Word third and then act.
In my Bible study library I now have Bible commentaries, devotionals, books about prayer, apologetics books and more.ย ย When I read a passage in the Bible that either seems confusing or sounds like a message I really need to hear, I pull out various other tools to help guide me, in addition to praying over the verse.ย ย This has expanded my study time from about 15 minutes to about an hour.ย ย It centers me for the day ahead and places my feet on His path.
Praying, listening, reading. These steps help us to gain Godโs wisdom. Without taking these steps itโs very difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish Godโs plan for us. I love what Proverbs 8 says, speaking as Godโs Wisdom:
โListen, for I have trustworthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right. My mouth speaks what is true, for my lips detest wickedness. All the words of mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse. To the discerning all of them are right; they are upright to those who have found knowledge. Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.โ
I am issuing a challenge today. Take Proverbs and create a โWise Wordsโ list. Create categories that each 1 liner falls into and place it in its category. Some of the proverbs are repeated so you donโt need to write them again โ but you might put a tick mark by the verse to show how many times it is mentioned.
For comments today, let us know a time that either 1) you didnโt pray and got yourself into a mess or 2) you heeded Godโs word and realized what a blessing it was!
They didnโt want to add to our current, stressful situation. My husband, their son, owns and operates residential Alzheimerโs care facilities and each day the state government was changing rules related to COVID-19. The staff were worried, residentsโ family members were worried. And true to my in-lawโs gracious ways, they didnโt want to pile on more bad news.
You see, my precious mother-in-law had been diagnosed with uterine cancer. When we talk about angels on Earth youโre talking about her. When I picture her I see love. I see goodness. She is one of my touchstones. Sheโs a lot of peopleโs touchstones. During the last 32 years she has quietly guided my faith journey. And she has cancer.
James leaps from the starting gate in his letter to the church with a challenging statement:
โConsider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.โ
James 1:2-3
A few years ago, that statement might have received the response, โAre you โcray, crayโ?โ Meaning youโve got to be kidding. Not only โjoyโ but โpure joy.โ It reminds me of the scene in the movie Animal House โ a pop culture film about a college fraternity. In it, actor Kevin Bacon is being initiated into the fraternity. He is required to be harshly paddled by its members. But not just paddled, he must also request the beating each time by yelling, โThank you sir! May I have another!โ The pain is evident on his face with each whack. Yet he knows he must ask for more to achieve his ultimate goal โ membership.
While I donโt believe God wants us to be begging for trials, He knows in the course of our existence they will naturally come.ย ย In Mark 10, Jesus tells the disciples that not only will they receive a hundred times what they have given up to follow Him but also persecutions.ย ย Throughout the Bible we are encouraged to embrace our trials, whether from persecution, loss or affliction, so that our faith may mature.
A few years ago, I started hearing the term, โbaby Christian.โ The implication being that we are born with our commitment to Christ and then grow with our faith. We can choose to stay โbaby Christiansโ just like we can also choose not to become mature adults. It seems more obvious to the world when we see people who have opted to not get a job, educate themselves, learn to live on their own, have a solid bank balance, and take care of themselves. You might have someone like that in your own family. Or you might be aiding in someoneโs stunted path to maturity. What doesnโt always seem obvious is our stunted Christian spiritual growth. It takes much of the same concerted effort to grow in our faith. To be at the place James calls us to โ finding Pure Joy in the difficult times.
Where are you at on the Spiritual Growth Chart?
With Jamesโ simple opening salvo he blasts us into paying attention. We can either 1) scoff and choose to ignore him as a crazy person or 2) say, โtell me how.โ In Luke 22:28 Jesus listens to a dispute among the disciples. They are arguing who is the better disciple (sounds like one of my PTA meetings). He interrupts and tells them, โYou are (all) those who have stood by me in my trials.โ His trials. You see, Jesus was sent to not only verbally teach us our Fatherโs ways but to experience our earthly ways to show us how to handle them. We mark our spiritual growth chart with each trial when we turn to Jesus and say, โyouโve been here, show me what to do.โ
Thereโs lots of self-help books out there to guide us to being mature adults. But the best book to read for both spiritual growth and worldly maturity is the Bible.ย ย Every single book of the Bible talks about trials or persecution.ย ย And without fail the solution is prayer. Not just any prayer. A personal plea.ย ย A demanding of Godโs blessing to rain down on us.ย ย A clearing of our eyes to see the joy.ย ย And then listening.ย ย He will speak to you.
God uses nature to speak to us!
God rarely just throws us first into the fiery pit. And even if he does, he is always with us. That alone is a blessing for which to be thankful. With each trial, each persecution, He expects us to grow more trusting of Him. Yes, expects. Dr. Charles Stanleyโs Life Lesson #7 says, โThe dark moments of our life will last only so long as is necessary for God to accomplish His purpose in us.โ So, my advice to you, accept and learn early and as quickly as possible.
With each trial thrown in your path you gain perseverance, patience and clarity of Godโs presence. But we must do the work of asking Jesus, โShow me.โ I once told my Bible Study group we need to shorten the โah ha moment gapโ from years, to months, to days, to instantly. We all can look back at situations where maybe we didnโt get the job weโd hoped for or maybe even got fired from a job. Or a loss of a home due to fire, a friendship that soured, a marriage dissolved. How long has it taken you to accept the way God was working in that time? Have you seen it yet? He was there. He spoke to you.
Why is all this important? We know there will be trials so that means we canโt do anything about them, correct? When we dread what we think is to come, when we are poured into concrete boots of fear during trials, weโve taken our eyes off Jesus. And if we are to grow in this project called Us we need a strong foundation of keeping our faith and trust in Him alone. This is not an easy task. For some of us it takes every minute of every hour re-focusing our mind on Him โ especially when we are afraid. Iโve come to use the term, โPerspective Change Momentโ with some of my friends. When we start in on our ills, fears, anger, dread it helps to have someone say to us,โ Yes, thatโs awful andโฆ..โ
We all need friends who can be our “James!”
With the same practice we put into doing our hair every morning or working out or learning how to use our smartphone or figuring out how late we can sleep and still get to work on time we need to attack the devil that keeps trying to pull our eyes away from Jesus. Show me, Jesus. Speak to me, God. Itโs not enough to tell yourself, or others, โdonโt worryโ or โdonโt be afraid.โ We must fill our minds with something other than that fear and worry. In Luke 11, Jesus tells the story of an impure spirit coming out of a person and goes looking for a better place. When the spirit doesnโt find it he returns to find a nice, clean, empty house. And you know what that impure spirit does? He invites a few more friends to join him! Our lives end up looking more like a Weight Watchers check-in session โ we have a week we are up and a week we are down and on and on. Had that person cast out the spirit with Jesusโ help and filled that home with Godโs Word, Jesusโ love, and the constant presence of the Holy Spirit you can bet the evil spirit wouldnโt make it past the garden gate!
I have a good friend who was laid off from her church position about 3 years ago. It has been difficult for her to find the joy in that trial. For me, I can remember how unhappy she was in that job. But no matter how many times I told her how miserable she was, she still couldnโt accept it. Until she finished one of her journaling books. One day a week or so ago she started reading through her old journals from that time. In them she found her old self praying for Godโs intervention constantly. Each workday entry was a distraught woman praying for God to fix the problems swirling at work. She finally had her โah ha moment.โ God was there, telling her to leave. But she kept holding on. That day she made a new mark on her spiritual growth chart. God had spoken to her and she had to joy of knowing He was with her. She could release all the negative emotions surrounding losing that job. It wasnโt where God wanted her to be.
So, here I was, working on being the best team member I could be for my husband as we waded through the throes of the COVID-19 lockdown and my in-laws finally decided we needed to hear the news. Cancer. Just a year ago this wouldโve put me in a tailspin. But in just that yearโs time, Iโve gone through a family death, putting on a distance wedding, accepting the fact that Iโm not going to work anymore, and much more. With each trial I leaned into my Rock a little more. With each trial I started finding the joys. So, after the news I took my dog for a quiet walk in our nearby canyon and asked Jesus, โShow me.โ I cried out to God the great Counselor, God my Comforter. I first pleaded and said, โYou canโt take her.โ I raised my hands high and begged for mercy for my sweet mother-in-law. I reminded Him she is a faithful servant. She is His loving daughter. And then I listened. He reminded me we all must pass one day, just as her own mother did a year ago. He told me He loves her more than even I do. He told me to just keep loving her and living out joy moments right now, today. He showed me that when her time comes, just as mine will too, she will join her mom in glory at Godโs card game table. The battle of who is the best 31 card player will continue into eternity. And I laughed.
31!!
Are you going through a trial and need prayers? Iโd love to pray with you. Have you gone through a trial and had your โah ha moment?โ Please share.
Iโve long found it fascinating when I hear people say theyโve never heard from God.ย ย In a previous church Bible Study, where the majority of the women were over 70, it actually saddened me to listen to woman after woman say she loved God but never really felt His presence or heard Him speak.ย ย As I delve into a deeper relationship with our Lord, I keep hearing the same message from Him โ you can walk up an aisle, stand when called, or raise your hand when asked if you want to receive Jesus, but until we seek out a personal relationship with Him our faith remains unfulfilled.ย
I recently was reading about a centurion man named Cornelius in Acts 10. He was not a Jew yet was devout to God. His family was considered โGod-fearing.โ He gave generously and prayed regularly. But He did not know Jesus was His savior. The Holy Spirit came to him one day.
โYour prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.ย ย Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter.โ
Acts 10: 4-5
He immediately obeyed.ย ย What was to unfold was discipleship at its finest.ย ย Trusting Godโs word, obeying even though it seemed unreasonable.ย ย In the end, thanks to the actions of many, Cornelius and his family became the first gentile Christians โ paving the way to you and me.
If you have ever watched the movie, โItโs a Wonderful Life,โ you will surely get the message of our interconnectedness.ย ย We so often think we are small and insignificant, while strangely also thinking everyone needs to know our opinions.ย ย But it is the actions we take โ led by the Holy Spirit โ that cause ripples of which only God truly knows the effects.ย ย My current Bible Study Girls are studying Charles Stanleyโs, “30 Life Principles.”ย ย Weโve started to joke about if all Mr. Stanley wrote were the words, โobey God,โ the book couldโve been much shorter!ย ย In fact, five of the 30 principles specifically use the word โobey.โย ย Many of the others are really just variations of the idea.
To obey something is to first know what that something is or wants.ย ย Which means listening.ย ย Which means paying attention.ย ย Iโve challenged many friends and Bible study participants to take my โCoincidence Challenge.โย ย For 30 days, every time you hear just the right song, see a sign that says the right thing at the right time, or a friend calls when you need to hear a friendly voice, donโt call it a coincidence.ย ย Call it God.ย When you do, youโll find he isnโt silent.ย ย In fact, He is babbling away at you, desperately trying to get your attention.ย ย
The Book of James calls us to that personal relationship of listening and obeying God. His message is to those of us who already call ourselves Christians. It would be unfair to hold anyone else to the standards of which he writes. Many of these standards are difficult and challenging. And we are unable to meet these standards without a faith in God. God alone is our strength to keep us on the narrow path. At times it seems James is shaking us out of our Christian sleepiness. Calling us to wake up, pay attention and serve God with all our heart, mind and soul. James is the proverbial โbad cop.โ But sometimes we need admonishment. We need correction.
I was having lunch with a good friend the other day and she said she needs friends who can call her on her โstuff.โย ย If we are surrounded by โyes menโ we struggle to improve our lives.ย ย It can lead us down destructive paths when the standards held by the majority of whom we associate with are โalmost rightโ or just plain anti-Biblical.ย ย But when we have people who love us, want the best for us, and call us on our โstuffโ based on Jesusโ standards, we grow to be our better selves.ย ย James is that friend.ย ย More importantly, James reminds us that God is that same friend.
“You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”
John 15: 14-15
This week we will be talking about James 1.ย ย Trials, temptations, wisdom, listening, and action are on the plate.ย ย So, buckle up.ย ย We are about to strip down to some hard truths.ย ย But remember too, that God is a merciful, loving and thankfully forgiving God.ย ย That same friend who said she needs friends to call her on her โstuffโ also said sheโs worried that a study in James will be painfully convicting.ย ย Letโs right now agree that if God shines a light on an area that needs work in our lives He does so out of love.ย ย He wants more for us.ย ย He knows what the future can bring us.ย ย So, we need to lean in to the stripping away of our old selves so that we can live in His plans for us fully.ย ย
Do you regularly hear from God? Tell us of a time you were asked to obey and it seemed unreasonable yet you took action.ย ย ย If not take the โCoincidence Challenge!โ
It’s much easier to talk about God than obey Him. We put on our cross necklace or stick our fish bumper sticker on our car and declared “It is good.” What if our children treated us the same way?

It may be hard to find at times but there’s joy in trials. When we face a challenge we can go forward in dread or in the knowledge God is leading the charge.
Join me starting September 7 as we dig deeper into the Book of James with a five week study. Follow my blog to receive your daily emails.
One of my favorite visuals from the Bible is James 1:23 โ โAnyone who listens to the Word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.โ Strangely enough I find myself doing that at times. I get up, wash my face and go about my day. At some point Iโll go into a restaurant or store bathroom and look in the mirror as I wash my hands. I almost shock myself when I see what my hair looks like or how old I look.
I also do this with obeying the Word of God.ย ย I get up in the morning, read my devotionals and Bible studies then head out into the world.ย ย At times it may take all day before I forget the Word, other times itโs my first encounter with another human as I leave my street.ย ย I get angry, snarky, unforgiving, worried, maybe even a bit vengeful. I forget Godโs admonition โ that if I want to receive mercy then I need to be merciful.ย ย If I want to be treated kindly then I need to treat people with kindness.ย ย I tell people that the actual act of being a faithful follower of God takes work.ย ย It takes practice.ย ย Some days it takes every single ounce of strength to keep my mind fixed on Jesus.ย ย The world wants us to take the easy route.ย ย They want us to forget what we look like.ย ย The world says โitโs okโ to chip away at what we know to be right.ย ย Those โalmost rightโ temptations are what give the devil his footholds.
Thereโs been great debates over time about grace vs. works.ย ย Iโm not a world-renowned Bible scholar.ย ย I donโt have a degree in theology.ย ย But I can read James 2:14 which states,
โWhat good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?ย ย Can such faith save them?โย
James 2:14
Throughout the New Testament itโs made clear that faith without deeds is really no faith at all.ย ย The Book of James speaks to my Martha-like spirit.ย ย But it also is for Marthaโs sister, Mary.ย ย Because deeds come in all forms.ย ย Martha showed love by cooking and cleaning.ย ย Mary showed love through adoration and giving.ย ย
James is only five short chapters.ย ย But they are packed with Jesus follower gems.ย ย The foreward in the Bible study book,ย James, Faith that Works, says โUnlike most books of the New Testament, the letter of James is best known for the people who donโt like it.ย ย Itโs seen as a scalawag among the obviously Christ-centered letters of Paul, and the love-concerned writings of John.โย ย I personally like being a scalawag.
scalawag
noun
a scamp; rascal.
We feel the sting of James.ย ย But without an occasional admonishment, we humans are extremely prone to skipping along dangerous paths. As a parent, I know the two most important roles I played while raising my girls was 1) setting and holding them to rules and 2) loving them even as they broke those rules.ย ย Isnโt that what God does for us each and every day โ when we turn from the mirror and forget what we look like?
Join me, starting September 7, 2020, as I take a chapter in James each week to spur us on to action โ to be doers of the Word, not just readers.ย ย Through James we can learn to take practical steps to living out our lives as Christ followers.
