โYou are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.ย Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.ย In the same way, let your light shine before others, soย that they may see your good works andย give glory to your Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16
My husband is a memberโofโthe nationally known, free fitness group called F3.โTheir name stands for Fellowship, Fitness and Faith.โLocal groups are led by volunteers at parks, recreation centers, beaches, etc.โIt’s like a “meet up”โgroupโfor men of all ages who like to do terribly difficult exercises.โAt least that’sโhow I view their workouts!โMy husband’s group is an interesting mix of various international backgrounds and ethnicities who mostly now find themselves living in upscale beach areas in California.โ
As the “social chair” of the F3 Del Mar group my husband recently putโtogether a Socks and Sacks charity event.โWith donations and volunteersโfrom the group they gathered together yesterday and made 100 bean and cheese burritos for sack lunches for the homeless in our area.โMany of the men brought theirโwives and kids to help with the endeavor.โWhat I loved most,โhowever, was helping the kids — agedโabout 4โto 17 — decorate all the paper bags we were to use.โIโencouraged them to write little notes on the bags and/or decorate them how they saw fit.
As I supervised them, it was so cool to see even the youngestโunderstand the task at hand.โBags had beautiful rainbows, hearts, smiley faces, snowmen,โChristmas trees, and some interesting abstract designs.โTheโolder boys wrote messages such as “stay strong,” “be safe,” “Merry Christmas,” and “Jesus loves you.”โIt was heartwarming to see theseโteenaged boys write such encouraging messages to people they had never met.
"Little children, let us notย love in word or talk but in deed andย in truth." 1 John 3:18
These children weren’t worried about saying the right thing.โThey weren’t worried that their artwork wasn’t professional or perfect.โThey just knew there were people who needed to hear a small word from God.โThey were willing to be the light shining before others in His glorious name.
As the group of 20 prepared to head out and distribute the bags of food I said a blessing over them.โFirst, I thanked God for this season of celebrating His Son who came to save us from our sins.โThen I thanked God for the provisions that allowed us to buy and make the food.โLastly, I prayedโin thankfulness that we had the opportunity to be that Light in His name.โ
Afterwards we all met up for some lunch.โOne of the mothers approached my husband and I and thanked us for having them participate.โShe said, “The kids loved it!”โImagine that.โThese children who come from well-off families in pristine neighbors were so happy to have walked through the muck and dirty streets to hand a bag ofโfood or some new socks to poor strangers.โNo wonder Jesus held children in such high esteem.โThey love servingโthe Lord by serving others.โWithout fear, without trepidation.
My husband and his friend shared how one homeless man was given a bag.โHe held up the bag, which was decorated with beautiful littleโflowers.โHe shouted with glee that he received that beautiful, hand drawn artwork.โHe didn’tโcare what wasโinโtheโbag.โHe cared that someone else cared.โThat, my friends, isโletting the glory of the Lord shine through us.
This next week I want to challenge you to help someone every day, in the Lord’sโname.โItโmight be small, it might be large,โwhatever it is have it be something that you don’tโsee any benefit to you personally.โWhat you will find, as I told the families before they headed out, is that you willโbe blessed.โIt’s a beautiful, glorious circle that God created.โAnd He delights each time you complete that ring.
Give all glory to the God who loves the poor and the rich, theโstranger and the friend, and especially the children.โAmen
