God’s Guardrails

For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. Deuteronomy 30:16

I grew up not wanting to have children.  In my isolated world I experienced a parenting style that used harsh, physical, anger-fueled discipline.  I didnโ€™t know there was any other way and knew it wasnโ€™t what I wanted impose on any children.  So often as we become our own people, cleaved from our parents, we take the elements of parenting we donโ€™t like and try to do the exact opposite.  However, I also acknowledged as a new adult that the harsh discipline kept me from a lot of dangerous behavior.  So where was the balance?

If you take a brief walk through the history of parenting youโ€™ll see a modern conflict similar to the one I was having.  The harsh disciplinary view of old was met face on with Dr. Spock and his more โ€œloosey gooseyโ€ style.  But as the Spock kids became the radical children of the 60s and 70s parents searched for a middle ground.  One psychologist, Dr. James Dobson took up the challenge.  He brought parents back into the position of authority but done with love.

Discipline isnโ€™t, by definition, a bad thing. Studies have shown that the most effective way to foster healthy relationships with children and give them the ability to learn and utilize self-control is through positive discipline.

Lauren Steele, Fatherly.com

We humans need fatherly guardrails.  Itโ€™s a proven fact since the beginning of time.  We need to remember that when Moses came down the mountain with the 10 commandments they were NEW rules.  New guardrails of how to worship God, how to treat other people, how to be respectful within our families, and how to protect ourselves from well, ourselves.

The Old Testament has a shadow story woven throughout.  Yes, we follow the woeful Israelites through trials, tribulations and successes.  But put in context God is constantly showing them how to live differently than all the other nations around them.  Nations that He created as well but saw how they overwhelmingly desired to live outside His guardrails โ€“ rampant sexual exploits, child sacrifice and more.  He was testing them all, just like today.  Free self-reign or accepting governance by God.

I praise God today for His guardrails.  For the 10 Commandments He gave us to live within.  Because just like our children we prove over and over that without them we can get ourselves into a lot of trouble.  Without His guidance, His narrow path, we wander off into parts unknown, get lost, live in fear and despair, and ruin not just our lives but the ones we love.

When I met my husband and told him why I didnโ€™t want children he assured me weโ€™d figure it out.  He wouldnโ€™t let my past keep me from a full future.  Thankfully as we took the journey, we met God along the way.  I may have pushed up against those guardrails a few times but He always calls me back to the center of the road.

Bucket Of Joy

You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. Psalm 4:7

Have you ever ridden on a carousel where the operator, at some point, drops down a metal arm toward the riders and a brass ring drops toward its end?  The riders on the outside stretch and strive to grasp that brass ring.  The prize?  A free ride to the one person who can attain that ring.  I think thatโ€™s how I was looking at joy for many years.  Not only from a grasping and striving point of view but from a scarcity mindset.  Thereโ€™s only one ring and lots of riders.  You have to be on one of the outside animals to even have a chance.  And once the ring is taken by a rider, your chance is gone.  I searched in earnest many years for joy.  How to attain it and how to hold on to it.  And what I discovered is that joy, freely given in abundance by God, is right in front of me for the taking.

Praise God that His joy, unlike the joy the world offers, comes freely and is never ending.  It is available to all.  In the carousel world, as we spin around and around, we can choose the outer seat or even one of the animals constantly moving up and down, never finding rest.  But how about instead we pick one of the colorful, stable sleds?  And sitting there on the bench as we take our seat is a replenishing bucket full of shiny joy rings.  Not just one free ride but endless opportunities for laughter and cooling breezes hitting our face as we go round and round.

Godโ€™s joy is available to everyone, not just the chosen few.  Itโ€™s there for the taking when we sit nestled in the promises and gifts of His Holy Word.  We pick up a ring from the bucket each time and hand it to the operator saying, โ€œletโ€™s ride!โ€  All the while we watch the outer edge riders stretching for the measly gifts of the world.

The thing about riding a carousel is we carefully pick which animal or sleigh to ride when we jump up to the main stage.  We are drawn to the exciting and the colorful, to the chance to grasp the ring.  Isnโ€™t that like the world?  The bells and whistles of the flesh pull us to stretch for even more?  To search for a bigger and better brass ring?  But God says, โ€œCome and rest and I will fill your bucket overflowing with joy.โ€  All we need to do is choose Him.

Egg-ceptional Gifts

God blessed them and said to them, โ€œBe fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.โ€ Genesis 1:28

My husband and I have four chickens on our little suburban farm.  They are our โ€œCovid Babies.โ€  Iโ€™m not really sure why we decided to get the chickens back in March of 2020.  We knew nothing about taking care of farm animals.  But like starry-eyed parents carrying home their little bundle of joy from the hospital we eagerly packed up our four baby chicks in a box and left the dusty little farm store behind.  We got four, instead of the two we originally planned, because we arenโ€™t allowed to have a rooster in the city.  It was our insurance plan. If one or two grew up to be roosters weโ€™d have to โ€œdo awayโ€ with them.

And here we are more than a year later with four giant chickens in a fairly small coop.  Henny Penny, Mabel, Grandma and Goldie donโ€™t seem to mind.  They grew up snuggled in close and seem to enjoy each otherโ€™s company.  Each day we go out to the nesting box in eager anticipation of fresh eggs and we are rewarded.  But what does that have to do with praising God?

Today, as I look out my โ€œShe Shedโ€ window and watch my four egg making creatures peck and sleep I canโ€™t help but be amazed at the plans and gifts of God.  In the beginning He created the animals and plants prior to man.  He prepared a place so perfect for us humans to grow and prosper.  The chicken is pretty much Godโ€™s perfect animal gift to us.  It is an egg laying machine.  Left to wander they drop eggs wherever they go โ€“ fertilized or not.  Itโ€™s a daily gift of food, not just for humans, but other animals should they be so lucky to encounter a free roamer.

When we got our baby chicks we read all the books about how to care for chickens and how to train them up just right.  Having trained a puppy just a year prior I was ready for the task.  And yet, when the time came to put them out in their โ€œBig Girl Coopโ€ they needed no human intervention.  At night they headed to their protected beds.  By day they hid away in the appointed laying space.  All by instinct.  All by Godโ€™s design.  Itโ€™s pretty amazing.

When we remove the concept of God the Creator from our lives and look at the world from a random point of view the danger is in placing humans and animals on equal ground.  But since the beginning of recorded time humans were appointed by God as protectors and users of Earthโ€™s resources.  God did not make a chicken to simply lay hundreds if not thousands of eggs in her lifetime just for them to be unused.

If youโ€™ve ever been around a chicken in the midst of the egg laying process youโ€™ll hear something interesting.  When the deed is done, she will often squawk loudly in triumph.  My chickens donโ€™t hang around protecting that egg from me.  In fact, itโ€™s almost like they are saying, โ€œhere, have another!โ€  And each warm egg I pull from the nest is a reminder of our God who has gifted us with all we need.

The Everlasting God

Day and night they never stop saying: โ€œโ€˜Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,โ€™ who was, and is, and is to come.โ€ Revelation 4:8

I donโ€™t know about you but as a โ€œbaby Christianโ€ I would go entire days if not weeks without thinking about God.  Without making any decision based on what God wanted of me.  As my journey has progressed that โ€œforgetting about Godโ€ can be counted in minutes and hours.  And with that I have seen so many changes in my life.

The verse today takes place as the end times draw near.  Creatures in heaven praising God โ€œday and nightโ€ simply because of his everlasting holiness. As Iโ€™ve studied the Bible, Iโ€™ve seen so often how God wants a close relationship with us.  Here in this verse the creatures never forget about God.  But youโ€™ll notice that God is also a constant.  He was and is and is to come.

Since the 1970s, one group or another has played โ€œchicken littleโ€ screaming from the rooftops about the world ending due to either overpopulation, nuclear war, economic collapse, global warming, etc.  At one point a politician even posted a countdown to Earthโ€™s destruction — which ran out about 8 years ago.  And according to a current politician we have about 10 years left before the Earth implodes apparently.

But hereโ€™s the thing, when you study the Book of Revelation itโ€™s not the Earth or God that is destroyed, itโ€™s sin.  God is the Alpha and Omega.  He created the beginning and will be with us throughout eternity.

Today I praise the everlasting God.  We cannot destroy God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit.  We can only, through our sin-filled, unrepentant lives destroy ourselves.  My earthly goal is to serve God as best I can with Jesus as my guidebook and the Holy Spirit as my tour guide.  That way I can join with the creatures in heaven continuously praising His name.

He Knows My Name

I will not forget you!  See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;  Isaiah 49:15-16

The other day my Bible study girls (or BSGs as I like to call them) were once again talking about praise versus thanksgiving.  I had already been pondering over my praise life when we started talking about how we so often thank God in our prayers for things He has fixed or doors He has opened in our lives.  But how often do we simply herald the Creator for being well, the Creator?  For being the Holy King of our lives?

As Iโ€™ve prayed these last few weeks for direction after completing the Jesus Mindset series, I kept being drawn to this topic of praise.  God speaks to us when we ask Him for direction.  And throughout the last few weeks He has placed numerous psalms and Bible verses in front of me related to praise.  So, it didnโ€™t come as a surprise yesterday when our churchโ€™s guest pastor highlighted the following verses in the book of Luke:

"However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.โ€ Luke 10:20

And so today I praise God for remembering my name.  I praise Jesus that if you look closely at His battered hands, you can see my name tattooed there.  And if you have confessed that Christ is your Lord and Savior, that God is our Great Creator, youโ€™ll find your name there too.  It cannot be erased.

When we remember someoneโ€™s name it also brings to mind the details about their life.

Pastor Joel Fitzpatrick

God knows exactly who we are.  What we have done.  What we will do.  And He still wonโ€™t erase our name from His hands.  Thereโ€™s no other relationship we could ever turn to which offers us so much love and forgiveness.

Knowing our name doesnโ€™t take away trials and tribulations.  Knowing our name doesnโ€™t make our outer life easy street.  Knowing our name brings us inner โ€œsettledness.โ€  The knowledge that when the Book of Life is opened our names are carved there for all eternity.  When this short life is done, we will rejoice in the heavens with the angels.  And that, my friends is something worthy of praise.

Praise The Lord

Sing the praises of the Lord,
you his faithful people;
praise his holy name.
Psalm 30:4

A prayer to constantly praise and thank God

Mighty God, I admit that when things go wrong in my life I am quick to ask for help.  But when my life is running along smoothly or even when a prayer is answered Iโ€™m equally quick to forget to thank you.  Each and every morning when I rise, I commit to thanking you for what you will send my way that day โ€“ even the โ€œnot-so-good.โ€  Because even in those times I know I have the opportunity to grow in my faith.  And throughout my day I will remember to thank you even for the little gifts you send my way.  LORD, at the end of my day Iโ€™m frequently so tired.  But you are never tired of hearing my praise for you.  I will, before my eyes close, remember the ways you revealed yourself to me that day.  Whether you acted as my counselor, comforter, King, creator, or protector, I will praise you.  In your sonโ€™s name I pray, Amen.

In the late Spring of 2020, I was led to learn more about how to pray.  Using what The Navigators call, โ€œThe Prayer Hand,โ€ I learned the five parts to highly effective prayer.  Thatโ€™s not to say we canโ€™t or shouldnโ€™t pray short, on-the-go prayers throughout the day, but the Prayer Hand revealed to me what was missing from my prayer life โ€“ praise.

Praise is different than โ€œthanksgivingโ€ I learned.  When we praise someone, such as our children or a friend we compliment them for what they themselves have done, created or just are such as their patience or sense of humor.  When we thank them it usually involves something to do with our relationship.  We thank people for helping us or making things easier in a situation.  The same is true for our praise and thankfulness toward God.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise
his name.
Psalm 100:4

This concept was so foreign and awkward for me  — it seemed that โ€œpraiseโ€ was so flowery and silly โ€“ that I dove headfirst into figuring out how to โ€œdoโ€ it.  And so, I created my 30 Days of Praise blog series.  I took all the different characteristics of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and set about praising them for well, just being the amazing Triune God.

And although that 30 days was pretty awesome, I still struggle with daily praising Him.  And that has revealed something else about me.  I have a hard time praising others (and myself to be honest).  Iโ€™m great at thanking people when they help me out. But just unabashedly praising people?  I realized that effort and awareness requires me to look outside myself and my own โ€œthings I gotta do right nowโ€ world.  I need to pay attention to the human beings around me.  I mean really pay attention.  To the salesclerk, the deli guy, the mailman, my neighbor, that person I see walking their dog every single day, my husband, my children, my friends โ€“ I need to look at them and see them and praise them.  Why? Because they too are Godโ€™s creation.  And I can praise God for putting them in this world.

Praising God means honoring Him for the rain, the sunrise, the puffy clouds, the air we breathe, the Son He sent, the joy He provides, the Word we read, the awesomeness of the universe.  We praise Him from whom all blessings flow!  I love the doxology I used to sing in a previous church and it takes on full meaning to me now:

Praise God from whom all
blessings flow, Praise Him
all creatures here below,
Praise Him above ye heavenly
host, Praise Father, Son and
Holy Ghost, Amen

I will keep working on my path to praising God each and every day.ย ย I want to be His thankful daughter.ย ย I seek to find ever more reasons to praise Him.ย ย And in doing so my eyes are moved off me and onto Him.

If you want this too, add the prayer to your daily prayer list and watch and see how God works in your life!

God the Recycler

So here we are — Day 30 of 30 Days of Praise! And although my daily prayer praise of the Almighty doesn’t end with today, my challenge to find different ways to write about God’s amazing characteristics is complete. When I started this more than 30 days ago I was on a journey to help me learn a new way of praying. I felt comfortable with thanking God, asking God for help, and asking Him for forgiveness. But praising God seemed so strange and uncomfortable to me. True to His character He placed a challenge on my heart and mind to help me grow.

I heard a great comment about God’s character yesterday. “God never allows us to fail a test, he just gives us the test over and over until we pass.” It goes right along with Charles Stanley’s Life Principle #7:

The dark moments of our life will last only so long as necessary for God to accomplish His purpose in us.

Charles Stanley, 30 Life Principles

God Allows Us to Be Reduced to Brokenness

You see, I didn’t start my journey of learning how to praise God 30 days ago. I started the day God spoke to me in my bedroom a few years ago. While I sat enjoying my little pity party God said, “Enough is enough.” He shook me with the simple statement: “What have you really done?” You see I was whining about being such a “good Christian” and yet my life felt like a mess. He spoke those words loudly again, “Yes, what have you really done?” He had been letting me do things my own way for a long time. But He loves us too much to let us continue down destructive paths for too long. That day started my training. And it was intense. He taught me that the secret to a peace-filled life was a lot simpler than what I imagined. I didn’t need to be “doing” so much. I just needed to obey Him — no matter the consequences, no matter how outlandish the request sounded. 1 John 2:25 says:

But if anyone obeys His word, love for God is truly made complete in them.

1 John 2:25

Not only was I reduced to brokenness but God was right there to put me back together as a much more simple, faithful Christian with one goal: Obey.

God Re-Uses Lessons To Get Us to Listen

Throughout my continuing journey I have experienced many times when the same lesson pops up over and over. It’s when I give in and say, “ok, ok, I get it!” that He finally moves on. From podcasts, to daily devotionals, and songs on the radio to a Bible study, His Word weaves its way seamlessly throughout our lives. On August 1, I started with my devotional, “New Day, New You” by Joyce Meyer. The day’s lesson? “Simple, Believing Prayer” based on Matthew 6:7. “And when you pray, do not heap phrases as the gentiles do, for they think they will be heard for their much speaking.” Good start as I then turn to my “30 Life Principles” Bible study lesson for the day: “Listening to God is essential to walking with God.” In it the question was asked, “What does Jesus say about the use of many words?” Based on, guess….. Matthew 6:7. I saw a message forming here. I then decided to read a bit of my “Spurgeon on Prayer & Spiritual Warfare.” I don’t read it everyday but I felt led to that day. And lo and behold, the topic was approaching God with reverence, joy, submission, confidence and sincerity. Not babbling on with useless words intended to make myself sound “christian-like.” Point taken.

What if through this odd little coincidence, or answered prayer, Heโ€™s sending you–youโ€ฆ out of all of those billions of people–a direct personal message of reassurance? To stop worrying? To keep the faith? That everything will be all right?ย

God Takes Trash and Makes It Into Something Beautiful

Each Sunday we would see him. A man in about his 40s dressed to the 9s. Not just full suits but “zoot” suits. Big shoulder pads, double breasted suits. But what was most impressive was his hair. I dated a guy back in the 80s who played in a 60s throwback band with that same hair — pumped up, rockabilly pompadour. He stood out among the mostly white, upper class 60-80 year olds. It came to pass we ended up in the same membership class. I told him how I enjoyed seeing what cool and interesting outfits he was going to show up in each week. And, I was definitely impressed with his hair. Both being named Chris/Kris we of course, hit it off. When it came time to tell our testimony I realized what a blessing it was that God put me in the same group as Chris. He told us how his family growing up were Christians. But he rebelled. He wanted long hair, hard rock and a free spirited life. One day when he was 15 his father came to him and said, “We are going to Africa to be missionaries. You have two choices, you can cut your hair and come with us or you stay here in California and find your own way.” He chose to keep his hair. He also decided that Los Angeles was the place to become a rock star. He played bass and guitar. He ended up on the streets, homeless. And he turned to drugs which eventually led to heroin. He told us he should’ve died at least 10 times. But God was not done with him. He pulled him from the fire after yet another devastating drug-fueled, car accident. And led him on the path to recovery. He now goes all over the country speaking on the perils of heroin and his faith in God. He jumped in to help mentor middle school and high school kids at our church. He’s one cool cat. Chris was like the trash that rolls along our city streets, finding its way into doorways. Crumpled up and seemingly useless. God transformed him into a true follower of Christ — a thing of beauty. His transformation story gives me hope for my, much smaller problems.

I praise God today for all the work He has done and will do in our lives. He whispers to us. He shouts at us. He shakes us and he nudges us. He will never force us to follow Him. And He will never fully let us go. Click on the photo below to enjoy the song, “Raise a Hallelujah” by Bethel Music — but here’s a hint, play it loud and raise your hands high!! I look forward to having you join me on my next challenge — “His Works Project”– coming soon!

From Master to Husband

When I was a kid one of my most favorite shows was, โ€œI Dream of Jeannie.โ€  My friends and I would take turns playing the Barbara Eden character, Jeannie, and the Larry Hagman character, Tony.  Major Anthony Nelson (Tony) crash landed his space capsule on a remote beach.  He discovered a beautiful bottle and opened it.  With a puff of pink smoke out popped a gorgeous, blonde genie.  She, of course, offered him three wishes and the opportunity to be her โ€œmaster.โ€  Being a gentleman, he refused not only the wishes but to be called โ€œMaster.โ€  She fell deeply in love with him.  Jeannie and her bottle came to live with Tony in Cocoa Beach, Florida.  As the tv seasons went on, Tony also fell in love with Jeannie and eventually, they married.  The problem along the way was she kept calling him โ€œMaster.โ€  He always insisted she call him โ€œTony.โ€  It was a way of life she lived for 1,000s of years.  In that time the rules stood โ€“ when someone opened your bottle, they were your master.  It took a lot of training to break that habit and eventually call him โ€œhusband.โ€

It takes a lot of work to be called a โ€œmasterโ€ of something.ย ย Journalist and author Malcolm Gladwell wrote about the 10,000-hour rule in his 2008 bestseller,ย “Outliers.”ย The rule is simple: mastery comes after someone practices one skill for 10,000 hours. ย And new studies show even that may not make you great at something.ย ย In some areas you still need talent or clearly defined ways in which you practice.ย ย When you break down the 10,000-hour rule itโ€™s overwhelming.ย ย ย It can take more than 20 years to accomplish this feat for one skill.

God has been at work as Master of our world much longer.ย ย And who knows how long he has been Master of the Universe!ย ย Iโ€™m thinking He has gotten pretty good at being in charge, not only of our lives, but the entirety of our world.ย ย And yet we still buck under His authority.ย ย He doesnโ€™t ask for a โ€œmaster-slaveโ€ relationship from us.ย ย In fact, in Hosea, God clarifies His role in our lives.ย ย He wants to lead us, speak with us tenderly, shower us with riches.ย ย And when we respond in loving obedience He says:

โ€œIn that day,โ€ declares theย Lord,

โ€œyou will call me โ€˜my husbandโ€™;

you will no longer call me โ€˜my master.โ€™โ€

Hosea 2:16

I think as Christians we struggle in life between seeing God as our โ€œmasterโ€ as in โ€œthe bossโ€ and as our โ€œhusbandโ€ because we constantly try to pull away and lead our own lives.ย ย The sin that is created from this brings feelings of condemnation and pain.ย ย Instead we should see God as โ€œThe Master of the Universeโ€ โ€“ the being who has put in way more than 10,000 hours of practice.ย ย Heโ€™s who we can lean on, trust, look for guidance, find hope in, and gain strength from.ย ย And with that, He wants a personal relationship with us — as a loving “husband.”

A lot of feminists bristle at the Christian ideal of family structure.ย ย A husband as the leader of the family brings up hackles.ย ย ย And yet men and women who truly know and understand the Bible realize God created a loving hierarchy in our families based on our God-centered, world hierarchy.ย ย There are no slaves with brutal masters.ย ย There are masters who had responsibilities to slaves throughout the Bible.ย ย There are business people who must treat their workers appropriately, just as God has treated them.ย ย And itโ€™s very clear that both a husband and wife have responsibilities for loving and caring about each other.ย ย

God, the All Knowing Master, is also our betrothed.ย ย I praise Him for being both โ€“ a powerful force that I can rely on and love with all my heart.

The Heaviest of Burdens

The other day while out walking with my dog I was listening to a podcast by a well-known Christian speaker.  She asked the question: โ€œDo you remember a time when you sinned, I mean really sinned?  How did it feel?โ€  I stopped to think on this.  Iโ€™ve never murdered someone.  But I did encourage a friend in my younger days to get an abortion.  Iโ€™ve never been a thief, although I have, at times, realized I wasnโ€™t charged for something correctly and didnโ€™t go back to the store clerk.  Iโ€™ve never cheated on my husband.  But do those lustful thoughts count?  I check in with my mom and dad, through gritted teeth.  I put God first. Well, except for the times I put money and my children first.  Iโ€™m good to my neighbors even though Iโ€™ve spoken badly about some.  See, Iโ€™ve only sinned a wee bit.

I realized that every single time I sinned โ€œjust a littleโ€ made me feel a โ€œlittle bitโ€ broken.  At times it made me feel a lot broken.  The Christian speaker went on to say, โ€œNow imagine Jesus on the cross.  He is the only person to walk the Earth who has not sinned.  But at that moment His Father placed all your darkness, all your brokenness, all your pain caused by sin on Him.  There is no one else who has experienced so much pain. Imagine how He must have felt.โ€  It brought me to tears.  It brings me to tears as I write this.

This visual is what I praise God for today.  The understanding of Jesusโ€™ pain and sacrifice made for us.  I previously hadnโ€™t made an emotional connection to this powerful, earth shaking moment in our time.   I had the knowledge but not the emotional response.  Baptist teacher Oswald Chambers once said about Jesus on the cross:

The Cross was a superb triumph in which the foundations of hell were shaken. There is nothing more certain in Time or Eternity than what Jesus Christ did on the Cross: He switched the whole of the human race back into a right relationship with God.

Oswald Chambers

My father is reading The Saxon series books.  In it, a character refers to Jesus as the โ€œNailed God.โ€  It brought to mind movies Iโ€™ve seen showing the crucifixion.  With each hammering of a nail through Jesusโ€™ feet and wrists I cried.  But it was out of sadness and horror.  That day, when I visualized Jesus on the cross pulling, drawing and tearing our sins from us and placing them squarely in His own heart and soul I was overcome with gratefulness and sorrow.  I want to apologize to Jesus.  His gift to us caused Him so much pain.

Itโ€™s a well-accepted fact that when we are forced to work hard for something, say a new car, home, a good job, we tend to take better care of it.  I didnโ€™t have to work for the gifts of salvation and redemption.  Iโ€™ve proven over and over that sin is easy for me to commit.  I need to keep Jesusโ€™ pain, his suffering, and His willingness to take mine, closer to mind each and every day. His love for us can only be repaid with obedience and thankfulness.

The Arresting Officer

As I sit here in my comfortable, middle-class, suburban home itโ€™s hard for me to imagine living where rioting and violence have taken over cities in America.  Now mind you, my neighborhood is very diverse. On my block alone live people from India, China, Philippines, Samoa, Puerto Rico, and Mexico — and there’s only 18 houses. What connects the tumultuous cities are a number of characteristics but what shocks me the most is the concept of โ€œdefunding the police.โ€  Thereโ€™s a lot of counterintuitive-ness going on in the world the last 10 years.  What seems good and right, now is apparently bad and evil and vice versa.  Loving your country and standing for its national anthem is evil but wanting to turn to Marxism, which only has ever brought about human suffering is good.  A white woman screaming in a black police officerโ€™s face about racism is good but a statue commemorating President Lincoln signing the emancipation proclamation is bad. Thank God I live under Godโ€™s plan which is steady and true.

Praise God that he takes the most unlikely people โ€“ ones who have created chaos and violence โ€“ and changes them.  He is the โ€œSuper Cop.โ€  He ferrets out those who hide in shadows doing evil.  And he has no fear in standing in front of the powerful and saying, โ€œyouโ€™re coming with me.โ€

I have a lot of respect for the police.  Even though I once told my two police officer friends, โ€œSometimes cops are real jerks!โ€ (and they agreed with me) I still value the difficult and varied roles they are asked to play in our society.  For many years I was a security substitute in our local high schools.  The role of high school security staff is many fold.  We would ensure the morning drop off went smoothy in the parking lot as crazed parents cut each other off and cursed at one another.  We then closed up the campus making sure the only people on campus were authorized to be there.  We patrolled the campus โ€“ keeping kids in class and strangers out of the school.  But we also counseled students.  Thereโ€™s the โ€œalways lateโ€ students who typically come from difficult homes.  The student who you find weeping in the bathroom because of a romance failure or a parent who has left the family were not unusual circumstances.  We were involved in altercations between students and staff which created opportunities to delve deeper into a studentโ€™s anger.  I imagine a city police officer experiences these and much, much more.  There are many difficult and dangerous situations they face and there are some uplifting moments in which it makes it all worthwhile.  When I see a college educated, privileged person screaming in the face of a police officer who is doing their duty to protect our cities it makes me want to weep for both.

A black officer listens while a white protester calls him a racist.

Saul was a violent and angry man.  His terror and violence against followers of Jesus was legendary.  He took comfort in the Law of God.  He thought of Jesus as being from satan, the false prophet.  So, he intended to eliminate this โ€œdangerous sectโ€ before it destroyed the Jewish faith.  But God met him on the road to Damascus and arrested him.  One of the definitions of โ€œarrestโ€ is โ€œto bring to a stop.โ€  When Godโ€™s holy light flashed on him, he fell to the ground.  The men with him were speechless.  Saul knew immediately it was from the holy realm and asked, โ€œWho are you, Lord?โ€  Jesus replied, โ€œI am Jesus whom you are persecuting, now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.โ€  Wow, the authority in that statement!  Instead of handcuffs placed on Saul he was blinded.  He had to be led into the city.  For three days he sat in the jail of darkness and did not eat or drink anything (Acts 9:9).

But God sent another of his officers to release Saul from jail.  The disciple Ananias was told by Jesus to go to Saul and anoint him.  He hesitated at first, knowing Saulโ€™s reputation.  When he entered the house, he placed his hands on Saul and called on the name of Jesus to fill him with the Holy Spirit.  Immediately Saul could see and was freed.

How many times do we need to be โ€œarrested by Godโ€ to finally see what life He wants for us?  Some of us have seen the inside of lifeโ€™s jail for far too many years.  We justify our actions because itโ€™s what the world wants from us.  Or we twist the meanings of Godโ€™s Word to suit our actions.  Like the city cop who knows the neighborhood junkie by name, God knows our names too.  That cop has given so much help and advice to the junkie but he keeps going back to what hurts him or may even kill him.  Jesus keeps putting His hand out to you and me.  When He shines that light on us as we stumble in the dark alleys letโ€™s grasp Him and let Him pull us free.
